would be 5 stars, if I lived in France and had a giant pocket.......2006-09-06

I just purchased this dictionary to help with some language related issues as I just moved to Montreal, and french is not my first language. As for the quality of the translations, who knows? I am not a linguist.

I like:
1) The largish print, very easy to read and find items.
2) So far has all of the words I am looking for

I don't like:
1) The title says this edition is 'Pocket'. DO NOT BE FOOLED! It measures 7.5 x 5.25 x 2 inches. Instead of pocket, think slightly bigger than a paperback book you would buy in the airport. That said, I bought this edition at a bookstore, and knew what I was getting into.
2) There is a culture section, that is focused entirely on culture in France. Makes me worried that there will be a day when I will want to translate some Quebecois word/ cultural term and it will not be there. It is not a big issue, and I guess I should have bought something with a Quebec bend.

Excellent French to English Dictionary.......2000-10-15

I have taken French for the last sixteen years in school and therefore have also used a variety of French to English / English to French dictionaries. This is by far one of the best that I have seen. Not only does it contain over 90,000 words and phrases, it has sections on French culture, holidays, how to write proper letters, weights and measures, and numbers. The font is easy to read and the book is small enough to take to class. This book is an absolute MUST have for the college student.

Softens the Pain of Losing a Pet...............2002-02-28

.....having just lost a cat that I'd had for fourteen years, I can tell you that the pain is terrible and that the one thing that can reduce the pain is someone who has been through it and who understands. Dr. Julie Kaufman, an animal chiropractor, has compiled a collection of wonderful stories written by people who have lost pets, be they cats, dogs, a horse or a beloved goldfish. It helps relieve one's own grief to read how each individual dealt with the loss, memorialized a pet and in some cases wrote poetry or even attempted to contact a departed animal spirit. She even includes relaxation and breathing techniques to engage in while thinking of one's beloved lost companion. This book was recommended to me by a friend and is wonderful for anyone dealing with the terrible grief that accompanies such a loss.

My 19-year-old Persian cat, Tilly, is a regular visitor to Dr. Julie. She is the warmest, gentlest and most knowing doctor I have ever known. She has helped Tilly with her severe arthritis and greatly reduced her pain. This book is filled with stories of the animals Dr. Julie has known and treated. There is also an excellent interview with veterinarian accupuncturist Dr. Heather Evans. This book will speak to your heart.

Crossing the Rubicon: Celebrating the Human-Animal bond in Life and Death. 1999. By Julie Kaufman, DC.

This is a very well-written and heartwarming anthology of real stories and experiences with pets. As the title indicates, it is intended to offer the reader new perspectives on the loss of a beloved companion animal. It also conveys the important message the bereaving pet owner is not alone, in this grief.

The author has succeeded in transcending the usual view and fear of death that we all have been raised with. In her wisdom and perspective she perceives death as a natural phenomenon, and offers gentle guidance to her readers, in developing this theme.

Each chapter begins with a self-help approach to meditative visualization and healing. In addition to the many heartwarming memorial poems and stories, this helpful book presents a positive philosophy of undying love, that enriches and enhances the life of the surviving owner.

In presenting new viewpoints on pet death, Dr. Kaufman has also added five interviews of special people, in this wonderful collection. These include a counselor in pet bereavement, two forward-looking holistic veterinarians, and the last two with a spiritualist and animal communicator.

Although the recent emergence and popularity of holistic medicine is starting to prove its hitherto undiscovered values, the suggestions that some people can communicate with animals - living as well as dead - can be too extreme for many. But it is still very interesting to read what these people have to say.

Overall, Crossing the Rubicon is an excellent new literary experience in pet love and loss. We recommend its reading, and trust that a future edition will include the APLB website with the others listed as Internet resources.

excellent book for animal lovers.......1999-10-15

This collection of stories, interviews, and poems is reassuring and inspiring. Anyone who has ever lost a pet they loved should find something to relate to in this book. The interviews with veterinarians are great and the first-person accounts of people dealing with their grief will make those suffering from a similar loss feel less alone and hopeless. Highly recommended!

Wonderful book from a great seller.......2006-12-26

I bought this book for my husband from Lindsay Family Books through Amazon, and it arrived in excellent condition. This book meant a lot to my husband, since he had met several of the people in it and had travelled to Normandy with some of them. I made a mistake in leaving negative feedback for Lindsay Family Books because I thought the book had not arrived in good time. It had, in fact arrived, but no one here in the house had noticed it, and the tracking information did not indicate it had been delivered. It was found in time for Christmas, though, and it was the most meaningful Christmas present he received, according to my husband. Thank you, and my deepest apologies to Lindsay Family Books for the mix-up!

A thorough and detailed history.......2006-04-25

From the 507th's WWII formation through to the heroic soldiers' return to the USA and their post-war lives, this book covers throughly the history of the Regiment. The book is lavishly illustrated and tells superbly of the baptism of fire on D-Day in Normandy and the ensuing campaign. From the well known engagements near Ste Mere Eglise to the hilltop stand at Graignes, all of the unit's history is covered. Martin Morgan's friendship with the 507th veterans and meticulous research make this a book to treasure.

For the first time since the end of hostilities in WWII, Mr. Morgan has compiled a thoughtful study of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment's involvement in the D-Day invasion. Using both personal interviews of 507th veterans and archival sources, Mr. Morgan's book is a well balanced combination of both individual narrative and objective tactical information which makes it a pleasure to read. The book also has many interesting photographs from actual 507th veterans, many published for the first time. The color maps detailing the 507th's deployment in Normandy and photographs of weapons and equipment will please both military historians and collectors alike. "Down to Earth" is highly recommended for those interested in the history of the American airborne forces of WWII!

If you enjoy reading about World War II, then this book belongs in your library. Through the use of many period pictures, as well as modern pictures of the battlefield today, the author takes you through the experiences of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment from training for the D-Day invasion through its first month of combat in Normandy. Highly Recommended.

Down to Earth, a hell of a book!.......2004-06-03

This book is fantastic. It explores the history of the forgotten regiment of the 82nd Airborne. Morgan does an excellent job telling the history of the 507th. He tells teh story of the 507th through the Veteran's own words, using oral histories recorded over a couple of years. The book is loaded with tons of fantastic photographs of the men in training, in combat, and after the war. Also the book has marvelous sidebars relating to the American and German weapons used during the war. Fantastic photos of the sites and artifacts as they are now in 2004! Absolutely fantastic! Great Book!

I have had a pond for 30+ years. This is one of the best and most detailed resouces that I have come across. It is one of the few that details the type of waterlily corms that each variety has. This is extremely helpful in identifying plants that have spread naturally and are not blooming. Great photographs. Uses both common names and scientific names.

It is extensive in the coverage of all water plants and gives practical information on their care. It is suitable to ponds in any climate. I am having a pond build and needed a comprehensive book of aquatic and bog plants that are suitable for Koi ponds. Everything is there at your fingertips. The color plates are wonderful as well as the descriptions. The only downside, it that I wished the authors would have a listing of the fragrant hardy and tropical waterlilies. Other than that, this book is a beauty!

Good, but not an encyclopedia.......2003-11-29

This is a book that will guide you in planning, building and maintaining any type of water garden you could imagine. It covers a lot of territory, from container water gardens to formal pools, bog gardens, rills, canals and even dew ponds. It will help you plan lighting, bridges, stepping stones and wet islands. It is especially useful in letting you know what you should be planning ahead for, what aspect you might not have considered that should be factored in. The writer includes a goodly section on plants too, including bog and marginal plants.

Some of the pond construction details are complex and might make you consider getting expert help. Sound foundations for even the most simple rustic bridge require concrete footings, perhaps with reinforcing rods. The book has much to offer in the area of pond maintenance, and in how to propagate and plant water plants - I loved the idea of planting them in old panty hose, rather than planting baskets or burlap - but I thought the section on fish and pond ecology was weak.

While comprehensive and having plenty of useful ideas and caveats, this is not an encyclopedia. Written by a water garden specialist from Britain, the book will make an interesting and attractive addition to your water garden library. It is useful and well illustrated with step-by-step how-to-do-it photographs, but it is nowhere near being an encyclopedia.

Chester Pierce was born in 1927; by 1952 he was a graduate of the Harvard Medical School. He went on to become president of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and president of the American Orthopsychiatric Association. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences and had an annual research seminar named after him by the National Medical Association.

Founding chair of the Black Psychiatrists of America, Pierce has profoundly affected American psychiatry and the thinking of African American psychiatrists during the last two decades. While recognized for his substantive scholarship on coping with extreme environments such as the South Pole, he is probably best known for his theories regarding how blacks cope with racism in the United States. In Race and Excellence, Ezra Griffith, also an African American professor of psychiatry, engages Pierce in a dialogue with the goal of clarifying the inter-connection between the personal and the professional in the lives of both black scholars. The text melds the story of Pierce's life and his achievements, with particular attention to his theories about the predictable nature of racist behavior and the responses of oppressed groups. Having earned his doctorate a generation after Pierce, Griffith approaches his conversation with Pierce as a face-to-face meeting between mentor and student. Retelling Pierce's life story ultimately becomes for Griffith an exercise in conceptualizing his own experience. As he writes, "I never just wanted to tell Chet's story; I wanted to work his story out, to measure it, to try it on, to figure out which parts are good for me and other blacks so earnestly seeking heroes."
