Here are some excerpts from the review of Such a Killing Crime by Roger Deitz that appeared in the winter, 2006, edition of Sing Out! magazine: "Such a Killing Crime is a delight to read. The novel is a mixture of folk scene memorabilia juxtaposed with sharp, fast-paced mystery writing." And also: "Lopresti gives us a scenic tour of Greenwich Village as it was in 1963 adding a few of his own clever plot devices." And finally: "You'll enjoy the read and, I wager, be surprised when you get swept up in resolving the who-done-it."

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2006-01-05

It may be hard to believe, but somewhere between the time Elvis Presley began to focus on making movies rather than music and the epochal arrival of the Beatles, folk music enjoyed a brief tenure as the preeminent genre of the American music scene. The cultural center of this great folk revival was Greenwich Village, where numerous coffeehouses showcased such emerging talents as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Kingston Trio.

This improbable musical detour serves as the backdrop for Such a Killing Crime. Set in the Village in 1963, the action of this "folk noir" thriller centers on a folk music coffeehouse called the Riding Beggar. As the story unfolds, several of the regular performers become the victims of violence. An Irish poet who frequently entertains at the coffeehouse is mugged and later disappears. Another Riding Beggar regular, up-and-coming singer-songwriter Dean Coffey, is found dead on the coffeehouse stage, a homicide victim. We follow Joe Talley, the Riding Beggar's young manager, as he delves into these and subsequent mysteries, thwarted by assorted red herrings and the occasional blind corridor.

The action and suspense are artfully interspersed with numerous historic references and cameo appearances by such folk music icons as Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs. The atmosphere of Greenwich Village in the early 60's is re-created with an impressive array of detail. Talley and his companions take note of the struggle for civil rights, the blacklisting that had lingered from the McCarthy era, and the emergence of popular venues for folk music such as the television show Hootenanny, then being broadcast weekly on ABC.

Along the way there are additional mysteries and a charming love story, as well as a cast of engaging characters. Such a Killing Crime is both a satisfying suspense thriller and a fine evocation of that long ago era when, for a brief time, folk music reigned supreme.

If you could see my "Favorite Books" list for this year, or any year, you'd probably be surprised to learn how much I loved and adored Such A Killing Crime. That's because, for the most part, I'm a pretty hard core non-fiction reader.

About the only kind of fiction I read is the kind of historical fiction that an author grafts, with meticulous attention to detail, onto a specific time and place.

For me, that's a big part of the appeal of Such A Killing Crime. The story itself is a perfectly compelling whodunit, but, beyond that, Lopresti immerses you so thoroughly in his setting-- the Greenwich Village folk music scene of 1963-- that you feel like a detective magically transported to a long-vanished era of late night hootenannies and smoky coffeehouses filled with turtlenecked beatniks.

That elaborately fleshed-out setting, that was really half the fun of the book for me. I think I came away with a whole new appreciation for that whole improbable folk music renaissance that flourished so briefly, withered so suddenly and left its subtle but pervasive influence on our culture.

How pervasive? Let me tell you a little story. Must have been about 1971 I came home, and my Mom was sitting on the couch drinking Ripple out of a jelly jar and playing this Frank Sinatra song, "Love's Been Good to Me." She loved that song! Played it over and over.

First time I heard "Love's Been Good to Me," I thought to myself "Sounds like Frank's gone folk music on us, and he's taken the whole Nelson Riddle Orchestra with him!"

Decades later I learned that the lyrics of "Love's Been Good to Me" had been penned by poet and one-time Greenwich Village folkster Rod McKuen!

As it turns out that is only one of many macabre twists and turns in the history of American folk music. Makes you wonder why there haven't been more folk music murder mysteries. We can only hope that Lopresti writes a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars A note from the publisher.......2005-10-06

Of course we love Rob's book. But we also wanted to make sure that everyone knew what Tom Paxton said about it: "Spooky. If I'd known he was watching us all so carefully, I'd have behaved much better." And we also wanted everyone to know that if they enjoyed the recent Dylan documentary by Scorsese, then you'll love this book! We knew Rob had done a great job incorporating the details of the era into the story, but as we were watching the first part of the show we were again reminded of how good a job he did. It was amazing how MUCH of what Scorsese focused on is also in Such a Killing Crime. --Gary McKinney & Karen Parker, Kearney Street Books

Book Description

In an enchanted world where man, sorcerer, elf, fairy, and many other species coexist, each race struggles to maintain power over the others. When the Sorcerer tries to regulate this power by casting a forbidden spell and splitting the world into two parallel dimensions, where humans live separately from the enchanted species, an ancient prophecy is unleashed. After discussing the threat of this prophecy, elf King Pladonima and fairy Queen Garnya call upon one who possesses the unique ability to challenge the Prophecy and to save the two worlds: Hayden Robert Wood who is the only living heir to both worlds.Joined by the charming fairy Penella, Advisor of the Eastern Assembly, and by the courageous elf Tenendail, Advisor to the King of the Central Alliance, Hayden departs on a heroic quest to race against the rapidly fraying threads of time endangered by the Prophecy. These threads contain the secret deception of one who will weaken the company. Hayden and his companions, guided by four mysterious nymphs on their journey, travel through enchanted portals that lead to uncharted lands of imminent danger and storybook reality. This dynamic and captivating character encounters many obstacles along the way-obstacles that force him to question the trustworthiness of his new-found friends and the loyalty of one of his companions.

Only 30 minutes old, and a baby stares at her mother's face, then begins maneuvering downward toward mom's nipple. A few days old, and she can track a ball, and "dialogue" with her limbs. Newborns are extraordinary beings, with innate abilities far beyond what is commonly believed. In Your Amazing Newborn, authors Marshall and Phyllis Klaus, renowned experts and authors in the field of newborns (Bonding and Mothering the Mother), combine information gained from decades of research with clear explanations geared toward new parents. The authors begin with the fetus. Through descriptions and ultrasound photography, they discuss the dialogue between mother and fetus and demonstrate the development of touch and hearing. Klaus and Klaus then explore the first minutes of life (the quiet, alert state immediately after birth) and the first few days, including descriptions of the newborn's innate senses and the ability to imitate, reach towards a parent, and enjoy sound and smell. Later chapters focus on adoption, fathering, grandparenting, and sibling responses to a new baby. Enhanced by black-and-white photographs capturing a newborn's remarkable abilities, this beautiful book is for anyone enchanted by babies. For new parents and parents-to-be, it provides insight and useful information about associating with and loving a newborn, and introducing him to the world. --Ericka Lutz

      Book Description

A celebration of a baby's extraordinary abilities in the first hours and days of life

With over 120 stunning photographs-all of babies less than two weeks old-Your Amazing Newborn illustrates the incredible new findings of research on newborns and guides parents and caregivers through the fascinating first weeks of a baby's life. Newly identified abilities are shown in astonishing photo sequences and insightful explanations. Abilities such as reaching (once considered impossible) are seen in exciting detail, along with the beautiful choreography between infants and parents, new discoveries about the five senses, the wonderful adaptation of adopted newborns, and above all that first spark of recognition that ignites a lifetime bond.

3 out of 5 stars Brief, interesting with great photos.......2007-04-12

This book is brief and simply written with wonderful photos. It discusses the characteristics of infants only in the first days of life; it doesn't cover how, say, a 1 month old is different from an infant. The pictures are wonderful and informative. For a more thorough discussion without the excellent photos, I recommend What's Going on in There? : How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life by Lise Eliot

5 out of 5 stars Great for health care professionals, too!.......2006-02-27

I'm a pediatrician, and I recommend this book, not only to new parents, but also to health care professionals. This fascinating work is basically an annotated illustrated bibliography to the research in this field. Any professional who wants to know more can take this work as a wonderful, paradigm-shifting and enlightening starting point, and follow the cited works to further work.
I do a lot of teaching, and I recommend this book to doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, and to medical, midwifery, and nursing students, and particularly to residents and fellows in pediatrics, OB and family practice--and of course, to new parents. A huge body of research over the past several decades has demonstrated a grand repertoire of innate hardwired newborn capabilities, including a wonderful capability for very young babies to interact with, and respond to, their parents beginning the first hour of life. My reasons for recommending this updated work begin with all the reasons that the parents who have reviewed this book here have already so eloquently stated. Beyond that, let me add: Marshall Klaus is a neonatologist from UCSF, co-editor and author of Klaus and Fanaroff, a solid neonatology textbook, and a careful and very observant researcher and scholar. Phyllis Klaus is a brilliant and thoughtful psychotherapist. They are an amazing team. The book is beautifully illustrated and fully referenced. Much of the work cited are the classic, seminal studies in the field. It should be required introductory reading for every pediatric resident and neonatology fellow on the planet.

5 out of 5 stars The best book you can read during pregnancy!.......2005-07-11

This was by far the best book I've read during pregnancy. It's a fast and interesting read with great information and research that both my husband and I found equally exciting and valuable. I can't stop telling people about it. It's the only book I've read that doesn't preach about the wrong and right way to do things, but offers research to show how intelligent and aware newborns are. It is much less about the parents and much more about the babies. I would highly recommend this to anyone expecting a new baby in their family.

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2005-05-20

The photos in this book are great, however, I wish they weren't all in black and white. Great information and research done on newborns. Worth purchasing.

      5 out of 5 stars amazing book.......2003-02-26

I justt loved all the photos in here of newborn faces and behaviors. every baby in this book is two weeks old or less, and it was so interesting to learn aout the skills they are born with.

Soyfoods have been a staple in Asian cooking for millennia, but until recently only a few Westerners took much interest in cooking with them. Now deemed a "miracle food," soy may help prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, reduce heart disease, prevent osteoporosis, and relieve the symptoms of menopause. Award-winning natural foods cookbook author and food writer Lorna Sass shares her decade of soyfood cookery research in The New Soy Cookbook, pairing soyfoods with ingredients and seasonings of cuisines from around the world. Beautifully laid out and illustrated, the book includes more than 40 recipes using soymilk, tofu, tempeh, soy sauce, and miso. The recipes reveal influences from all over, highlighting the cuisines of China, Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, and France, reflecting a delicious fusion of East and West.

Red Lentil Soup with Indian Spices, Tempeh Braised in Coconut Milk with Lemongrass, Curried Tofu with Spinach and Tomatoes, Sage-scented Cornmeal Scones, Pumpkin Tart with Pecan Crust, Codfish and Clam Chowder, and Black Soybean Salsa with Swordfish Strips are only a sampling of the tempting recipes you will find in Sass's lovely compendium. With only a few desserts, Sass focuses more on savory dishes using no meat, very little dairy, some seafood, and somewhat unusual ingredients such as quinoa, shiitake mushrooms, mesclun, kabocha squash, and broccoli rabe. With mouthwatering photographs, The New Soy Cookbook would make a handsome addition to any inspired cook's bookshelf. --Gretel Hakanson

      Book Description

They said we couldn't make soy appetizing. They said we couldn't make soy beautiful. The New Soy Cookbook is here to prove them wrong! Today's all-natural health miracle, soy can be a delicious and elegant ingredient in any meal. Soyfoods are increasingly being found to protect against heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis; to lower cholesterol; and to relieve hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Health-conscious cooks everywhere are eager to make soy a regular part of their lives, but they need the culinary guidance of a pro like best-selling cookbook author Lorna Sass. In addition to Asian-inspired dishes, Sass's mainly meatless and mostly cholesterol-free recipes cleverly place soyfoods in mainstream Western favorites for recipes such as Double Soybean Chili or Tempeh Simmered in Red Wine with Herbes de Provence. These dishes are friendly and appealing enough even for the truly soy resistant. It's time for cooks everywhere to discover the many pleasures of this modest little bean.

      4 out of 5 stars I like Pictures.......2007-05-10

The main reason I bought this book (other than I need to slow down on my meat consumption) is for the pictures. It shows me how my dish should look and inspires me to actually cook (which I like to do, but HATE cleaning up). The recipes are ok, not too many hard-to-find ingredients, but I would have liked to see more quick dishes.

3 out of 5 stars Not For Practical Use.......2003-10-21

If you are keen on entertaining your vegetarian friends, go for this book, but if you are looking for a handy helper for every day use, forget it. (Instead, reach for Deborah Madison.)
THE NEW SOY COOKBOOK should be billed as gourmet fare; nothing wrong with same, but again, this one will not help the everyday family cook who is trying to add the benefits of soy to the family diet.

5 out of 5 stars 10 Out of 10 for Making Vegetarian Cooking a Delight!.......2001-10-31

I am neither Vegetarian nor Vegan and am used to eating delightful meals in delightful restaurants world-wide. When I met my Vegan boyfriend I was in despair as to what to cook for him. Everything I tried tasted the same (to me). But Lorna Sass has saved me! Her meals are superb! Subtle yet zesty! Those that grumble about too many ingredients are churlish. Each recipe is worth whatever effort it takes to track down what is required. These are meals of the finest order. Yes, they take time! But the end result is well worth it. It has turned Vegan cooking into a pleasure, rather than a chore. The recipes with fish I will reserve for myself. For the rest, Vegan boyfriend is eternally grateful, and so am I. The spinach/dill soup would be a rave even in Paris!

      5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Soy/Asian style cook book.......2000-05-03

I bought this book hoping I would find new ways to incorperate soy foods into my diet with simple recipies and I did. I also found fantastic examples of asian style cooking which I also love! This is a wonderful book. I am lucky enough to live near 3 great asian markets with helpful owners that show me the way through finding some of the ingedients but most of them can be found in a regular grocery store. I have never bothered to write a review for a book before but this one compelled me. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary ways to enjoy soy meals!!!!.......1999-08-13

Exotic spices, fresh ideas on how to prepare soy products! My own cooking taste like someone else cooked dinner! Terrific soup recipes to warm a dark winters night. Very tasty deserts. Love the glossary that describes how to handle tempeh, miso and cooking with soymilk, helpful for a new vegan cook.

          Book Description

Botanical Latin is accepted by horticulturists and botanists everywhere as the medium for naming new plants, and botanical research is almost impossible without reference to the vast number of first descriptions in Latin — much information is available in no other language. For gardeners, too, a working knowledge of botanical Latin is essential for the accurate identification of plants in the garden. Now available in paperback, the fourth edition of this internationally renowned handbook summarizes the grammar and syntax of botanical Latin, and covers the origins of Latin and latinized geographical names, color terms, symbols and abbreviations, diagnoses and descriptions, the formation of names and epithets, and much more.

          5 out of 5 stars A must-have for serious students of botany.......2007-01-11

Ever wonder what those Latin botanical names actually mean? Well, this book will reveal it all. It's thick and heavy, but that's to be expected of such a thorough and exhaustive treatment of the subject. Not only are there dictionaries, but also chapters on grammar, syntax, and history, and even a section on Greek words in botanical Latin. Whether you're a professional botanist, a student, or a serious amateur, this learned tome will be a valuable reference book for your library.

          5 out of 5 stars Botanical Latin.......2003-06-09

As the quote says: "This book aims to provide a working guide to the special kind of Latin internationally used by botanists for the description and naming of plants." As such it has little or no competition and by itself sets the standard in the field.

Obviously it is not a dictionary, nor is it about plant names. For those wanting to look up current plants and their taxonomic status there is the invaluable "The plant-book" by D.J.Mabberley. For the derivation of botanical names there is "Stearn's dictionary of plant names for gardeners" by this same W.T.Stearn. Another very commendable dictionary (for a related field) is "Composition of Scientific Words" by R.W.Brown.

2 out of 5 stars Nearly impossible to look up a name's meaning.......2002-02-12

A very scholarly and authoritative work to be admired by academics everywhere - almost useless as a quick means to look up what a botanical name means. If you were to take a semester or so studying this work, it would probably turn out to be very useful. For example, the chapters are broken down into Habitats, Geographical Names, Colour Terms, Greek words, Descriptive Terminology, Chemical Reactions and Tests, etc. So, if you happen to already know that sagittatus is a descriptive term, you can go to the chapter on Descriptive Terminology and find out that it means arrow-headed. If you don't already know this, good luck finding out what it means in this book.

1 out of 5 stars What use is this?.......2000-12-26

Book is suitable for use as a door stop but not much else. note the following example which is typical: "Hypanthium: hypanthium (s.n. H), abl. sing. hypanthio." The words hypanthium and hypanthio are not further defined. Want to see more examples? I seem to find them every time I try to use the book. For me Webester's has been more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for anybody who's serious about plants.......2000-11-02

This book is probably on nearly every professional botanist's bookshelf, and is considered THE definitive reference for its subject. But it's also a great reference for anybody who is serious about plants and wants to know what their names mean and how they got them.

This most certainly is a reference book and not light reading. Nonetheless "Botanical Latin" also includes many interesting little tidbits, such as the derivation of Linnaeus's name (Linnaeus was the original name, and not a Latinization of Linné, as often thought). There is much more in this book than just vocabulary and grammar.

                              Book Description

"Be more Irish than Harvard," inscribed Robert Frost in the book of poetry he gave to John F. Kennedy at the 1961 presidential inauguration. With these simple words, Frost hit upon the experience that defined America's favorite political dynasty for over five generations: their Irish Catholicism. Drawing on groundbreaking research both here and abroad, acclaimed journalist Thomas Maier shows how their cultural background molded the Kennedy family to the core-both bolstering stunning successes and coloring spectacular tragedies. Casting new light on the Kennedys' struggles with race, anti-Semitism, the sexual mores of the Catholic Church, and even on John F. Kennedy's A Nation of Immigrants, the result is a revelatory glimpse at a remarkable intersection of private beliefs and public politics-and a spellbinding, uniquely American epic.

...the author began to write about the latter-day Kennedys: old Ted Kennedy, his nephews, his nieces. Then, it seems all the careful research and non-biased authorship went out the window. I can only suppose, maybe because Ted is still alive and could have played hardball with the materials granted to the author, the author decides to give him a pass. How can you write a book about the Kennedy family and not discuss Chappaquidick's ramifications?

But until that point, the book is excellent; plenty of actual letters from Rose, Joe, young Joe, Kathleen, Jack et al., are quoted (letters which reveal so much more of their feelings and their characters, rather than just an author stating an opinion about them -- this is great). The trauma that Jacqueline Kennedy endured after the assassination is finally explored in detail. Really, this part of the book is stunning, particularly in regard to what the Kennedys' faith meant to them (particularly Rose) and how it was practiced -- UNTIL the chapters regarding Teddy and the latter-day Kennedys. Then, I get the distinct feeling that the author is indicating it's OK that most of the latter-day members of the family have become the new "pick & choose" Catholics of today -- the type of so-called believers that want to manipulate and practice this faith THEIR way, not their Church's, way. In other words, if a Catholic belief doesn't suit their life choice, they know to make a slick excuse about the choices they make or the political positions they assume. For instance, Ted becomes pro-choice since about 1972 (but never before) --ironically, just when women really started speaking out and became a political force on this issue, and just about the time of Roe v. Wade. Was it really a belief in women's rights that changed him, or was it just a convenient time to sway the way the political wind was blowing?

I can't quarrel with the quality of the writing, or the research, so this book deserves 3 solid stars. Maybe some of my disappointment in the book is with the current Kennedy family itself (and, in respect to the book, the author's failure to point out how the family has lost its way). It is disappointing, seeing the younger generation's campaigns, marriages and even some lives going bust, due to drugs, embarrassing scandals & so forth; seeing how the Catholic values have been degraded, when compared to the stringent yet strong inner core that Rose Kennedy, Eunice, and I think even JFK (despite all his affairs), had.

Most of the younger generation (and Ted, too) seem to lack this core of strength and determination to achieve things not just for their own good but for the good of others, which I believe, for the most part, came from their Catholic faith. The author does a great job showing what the old faith as practiced by the Kennedys meant to them and how it informed the older generation's lives, but fails to point out that its loss and/or its current application as a sort of "only at my convenience" religion has left its mark on the current generation.

Professor Maier has documented a side of the Kennedys that many readers are quite unfamiliar with: their ongoing commitment to their religious heritage. As Maier writes, Americans are more comfortable with Kennedy's as power operators and libertines. The essential Catholic nature of these men and women, however, either bores us or makes us uncomfortable. Some liberals don't appreciate the Kennedys as Catholics because they dislike Catholicism itself. Many conservatives deny that the Kennedy's are Catholic because, for such critics, morality means sexual prudery. Maier is able to strike the proper balance in portraying Joseph, Sr., John F. Kennedy and Edward as committed, believing albeit flawed Catholics. Robert is correctly drawn as the most conventionally devout of the Kennedy males. This should not be a revelation to readers, but in a sense, it is. And the author makes one more very important and routinely ignored point: It is very significant that Americans have been unwilling to nominate (let alone elect) a Roman Catholic to the Presidency since John F. Kennedy, over 40 years ago. This work ranks as one of the best, most carefully-documented and readable of the hundreds of books published about this family.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Informative and Not a Rehash.......2004-02-10

While this is an excellent history of the Kennedy family, tracing its roots like few histories have done, this book is far more. The author neither shows a bias to adore this large, well-known clan nor does he show a disdain for them. He simply tells the story as it is and leaves the reader to his own conclusions.

The main thrust of the book is the family's dealings with the Catholic church. We learn what many have suspected, that the Kennedy family paid off the churches leaders, providing them with much personal and institutional wealth, for the benefit of various Kennedy family members --- for special treatment and services.

The book covers just about all family members who were helped by the Catholic hierarchy but, of course, it spends more time on JFK who benefited from payments made by his father on his behalf. But it goes on to the more recent affairs including marriage annulments of lesser family members.

While this clan is of much less importance than it once was --- indeed it is of little importance --- this history and the new revelations add a good deal of knowledge for the student of politics and religion and leaves us with a distaste and distrust of both.
