Another Savannah Reid mystery... Sugar And Spite. And I'm still liking this series a lot...

Savannah's ex-partner on the force, Dirk, is called by his ex-wife Polly (who Savannah can't stand) in what looks like a kiss and make up attempt. But Savannah gets a call from Dirk that turns their world upside down. Polly is dead, shot in Dirk's trailer, with Dirk's sidearm, her blood is all over Dirk, and neighbors heard them fighting before the gunshots. He says he came out of the shower to find someone there who had just shot Polly, but was unable to grab him before the intruder escaped. The chief of police seems to have it out for Dirk, and pushes hard to bring him up on murder charges. Savannah and the members and friends of her detective agency have to figure out who really did it and save Dirk from a lifetime of jail or worse.

The subplot here involves why the chief might want to have Dirk out of the picture, and what he may know about the crime. There is also a Savannah family subline (as there are in all the stories) that didn't work quite as well as the ones in the other stories. Her father who deserted the family when she was young has shown back up and wants to talk with her.

Fun read, good pacing, and some excellent themes of friendship, love, and loyalty. Probably one of the more emotionally satisfying stories I've read to date in this series.

As Great As Chocolate!.......2001-08-21

I thought this book was really great, even though this was the first Savannah Reid Mystery I had ever read. It's about a PI, named Savanah & her ex partner Dirk,who is arrested for the murder of his ex wife, Polly. Well Savannah has to clear his name, so the book is basically about all the things she will do for Dirk & it also shows how strongly friendships can be (now i know that sounds cheesy, but its true!). So all in all i thought this book was really great!

A fun addition to a lighthearted mystery series.......1999-12-24

Savannah Reid lost her San Carmelita police job when she challenged the authority of her ruthless superior Chief Norman Millquist. Savannah opened up the Moonlight Magnolia Detective agency offering private investigative services. Norman plans to be the next mayor of the small California town. Still loyal to her former police partner Dirk Colter, Savannah helps him on stakeouts when she can. When Dirk's former wife Polly returns to town, Savannah expects trouble. Polly dumped Dirk for a younger musician, but now wants something from the cop.

Savannah's instincts prove accurate as a hysterical Dirk tells her that Polly is dead. The murder weapon is Dirk's gun. Dirk claims he was taking a shower, heard a shot, and ran outside to observe an intruder bending over Polly's body. Dirk never catches the culprit. The police arrest him for premeditated murder. This leaves it to Savannah and her cohorts to find the real killer.

Savannah Reid is a sexy, voluptuous person who loves to eat and does not care that she is a full figured woman. She believes in herself and her worth, rejecting those who belittle her. G.A. McKevett provides a strong mystery that showcases Savannah's abilities. The pieces to the puzzle are in front of the reader, but placing them in the right positions is difficult and fun. The secondary characters are a group of eccentrics while the background of a Renaissance Fair adds to the overall enjoyment. SUGAR AND SPITE is a wonderful entry in a superb series.

I would highly recommend any of the books in this series by Cheri Meiners. This book has been especially helpful as my 5-year-old sometimes encounters children who *don't* share well or want to take turns. These books caught my eye because the writing level is just right for pre-K and kindergarten children. Truthful without being preachy or overly wordy, the series shows children and family members from many different ethnic groups in the colorful illustrations, and each book addresses issues which are developmentally critical to this particular age group: sharing, taking turns, being afraid, listening, respecting others, helping out at home, etc. These books have given us a starting point to discuss problems at school or interacting with others, and have helped my son to have more empathy for his peers....I am hopeful that this quality will serve him well as he continues on to kindergarten and elementary school. It is exciting to hear him use ideas from this series to problem solve.

Recent commercial dog food scare prompts a "re-read" of this book........2007-03-25

I purchased this book over a year ago and after digesting what the author had to say, I put the book into my library where it sat until the recent crisis involving poisoned "wet", commercial dog food.

I thought to pull the book from the shelf for a timely "re-read" and was surprised to see that much of what the author has to say makes as much sense as it did the first time I read it sense. And when you consider that the book was first published over 20 years ago, before the pet craze became what it is today, I couldn't help but acknowledge/commend the author as a ground breaker for what she has to say!

Of course, every dog owner knows their own animal best - but the principles Ms. Boyle discusses in her approach to a healthy dog make as much sense to me now as they did a year ago - and they are as applicable now as they were 20+ years ago when first published!

A must have for any dog owner who wants to rest comfortably at night -- knowing exactly what their dog is eating is not going to kill them.

A No-CAPS review of Natural Food Recipes for Healthy Dogs.......2003-08-04

Perhaps this quote will sum up whether this book is for you:

"I do not consider myself an expert on canine nutrition. All my evidence is anecdotal, from personal experience, over a period of time," (p. 7)

Yes, the author uses onions and garlic in some of her recipes. Onions can cause a Heinz body anemia in dogs. However, "The possibility of developing a Heinz body hemolytic anemia appears to be variable between pets, and it is not possible to predict which animals may or may not have such a reaction to onion or garlic" (source: PetDiets.com FAQ page). Apparently the author's dogs were not susceptible. If this is a concern, then leave the offending ingredients out.

The author's statements should clear up any confusion on who or what one is cooking for:

"Very simply I share my meal with our dog," (p. 3).
"Feeding your adult dog is like feeding another adult family member..." (p. 7).
"Think in terms of cooking these meals for your dog, then having the dog share its dinner with you," (p. 18).

Seems to me, that this is a recipe book for you and your dog to share. The author has a personal theory about nutrition for dogs and people - basically eat a little bit of everything and moderation in all things - and does includes recipes that should be viewed as treat or splurge items, not regular meals: hummus or cheesecake for example.

If you are committed to feeding BARF, raw foods, supplemented or no grain diets than this isn't the book for you. Cooked meat and grain form a goodly part of her feeding guidelines. Also, if you are looking for precise amounts to feed, then look elsewhere. The author advocates a bit of trial and error to find the right amount for your dog as well as frequent going-overs to assess body condition, much like Purina's ideal body condition charts.

For those wanting precision and supplementation in homemade dog food, I would recommend "Home Prepared Dog & Cat Diets, The Healthful Alternative" by Donald R. Strombeck, DVM, PhD. This book is of use for all lifestages and special needs diets (for example Chronic Renal Disease). Be forewarned, the book does require you to put effort out in figuring the amounts to feed based on calorie/weight charts.

Overall, I like "Natural Food Recipes for Healthy Dogs". The guidelines are simple, her philosophy is similar to mine and anyone that gets a Pyr to 14 years of age must be doing something right. No one book has all the answers and what works for one dog may not work for another. Keep reading and questioning and pay attention to how your dogs are doing no matter what you feed them.

Oddly Enough, Dog Food Is Controversial.......2003-07-06

Hey, what's the problem? Sure, dogs are carnivores, not omnivores. But...they are opportunistic eaters, that is, they'll pretty much eat anything they can get their mouths around, good for them or not, kind of like humans. I can't believe how feeding dogs has become so controversial of late. There are those who love Bones & Raw Food or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF)as a diet and others who insist it will kill your pets. Some say kibble is the only way to go. Carol Boyle's book is great! The food is delicious, my dogs love it. I've got sense enough to figure out the proper proportions for my small dogs without having a chart spell it out for me. My vet told me onions will not harm dogs unless eaten in large amounts, and in any case, you can substitute with some garlic for onions or just omit them. For the cheesecake recipe, Ms. Boyle notes it should be fed in only very small amounts, as a treat. Best of all, every recipe I've tried in this book is good! I highly recommend it for humans. Ms. Boyle has not intended her book as a Bible for feeding dogs but does give useful information along with great recipes. I can think for myself, and I feed my dogs the BARF diet supplemented occasionally with a bit of food from Carol's recipes, to my dogs' great joy. In fact, the only way I can get my dogs to eat the small amount of veggies required by the BARF diet is to add a little of Ms. Boyle's Hoisin recipe sauce! I highly recommend this book, not as the sole and absolute reference on feeding dogs but as a terrific addition to other information on the subject.

Should Have Read the Reviews BEFORE Buying This ..........2003-04-17

I'm ashamed that I bought this book. Needless to say it's being returned! I would give it MINUS 5 stars if I could.

If I would have only read the reviews about this book first it would have saved a lot of wasted time. I found many of the reviews would have been helpful to me in deciding to order this book in the first place.

I can't believe that people are being told to give their dogs onions! I already knew to avoid them, as we do chocolate, and as soon as I opened the book (basically a HUMAN cookbook) I was heartbroken to find such a dangerous book is being pawned off on unsuspecting dog "owners."
Another stupid part about this book is that it said nothing of the portion amounts of food recommended for dogs of different sizes. Even if the recipes were not potentially toxic- which they are!- would you feed the same amount to a yorkie as a great dane?! I think not.

This is not a helpful book for guardians of pets. If anyone wants yet another human cookbook (I don't) that's all this is.

not all dogs are the same.......2003-03-03

Different dogs can digest different things. My friend's weiner dog ate a basket full of Easter candy... yes chocolate, and was none the worse. While onions may be toxic for some breeds, it is not toxic for all. This is one of the many things that people do not understand about canine diets. Obviously, Great Pyrenees are not adversly effected by onions. The author makes no claim that she is an expert, just that she fed these things to her dogs and they didn't get sick, in fact they did better...

A must read for all pet lovers !!!!.......2001-04-22

I have followed a natural diet with my 5 dogs for a year now, and I have seen SO MUCH improvement in all of them; even the 12 year old with his awfull allergies. NO MORE AWFULL DOGGIE SMELL, no more fleas (and I live in Florida), and beautiful shinny coats. I even include the onions, with NO bad reactions. My vet is amazed at how healthy all the dogs are.

An introductoy essay explore the art of Venetian glass blowing, a tradition that goes back more than a thousand years. This art fell into decline during the eighteenth century and collapsed with the fall of the Venetian Republic. in 1797. The revival of glass making in the middle of the nineteenth century was largely due to Antonio Salviati (1816-1890), a lawyer from Vicenza. As production increased, Salviati glass could be found in London, Paris, and New York. The Stanford family first became involved with the Salviati firm in 1883, and the collection was eventually donated to the University as an expression of gratitude for the extensive mosaic commissions from its co-founder, Jane Lathrop Stanford.

This sumptuously illustrated book illustrates and describes the 245 pieces of Salviati glass that were presented the Leland Stanford Junior Museum at the end of the nineteenth century. It accompanies an exhibition at the Iris & B. Gerard Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, California.

the best permaculture book for beginners.......2005-12-06

Regardless of one person's opinion about this book being dry, it is considered one of the best tried and true permaculture manuals out there. The illustrations are funny and poignant and the information accessible and aplicable to a modern world.
Also be sure to check out the forthcoming "Food Not Lawns" by Heather Coburn due out next Summer. It is sure to be among the best-ever urban gardening books.

a bit dry..........2005-11-04

This being my first text on Permaculture, I was hoping to be awed and enthused after reading. Rather, I was a bit tired and dreary eyed. The book does contain many useful and convincing ideas. It also seems to have the depth of research I like in a text. Yet I could not wait to put the book down. It's common sense approach, not the revolutionary style I had come to link with Permaculture, left me wondering why I ordered it and if there is another trext more inspiring...

Look further before buying.

What is permaculture? Permaculture is a way of life; it makes maximum use of resources by minimizing waste and maximizing potential; it is a tool for planet-repair; it is a way of creating wealth without causing environmental damage; it is about meeting our own needs without making the lives of other less pleasant; it is about limiting personal consumption but gaining more than you lose; it is about using technology when it is the best way to accomplish a task; it is developing interdependence with the community rather than self-sufficiency; it is about reducing the work required to meet a given end; it is about giving each of us the power to influence the world from our own home. Permaculture is not about getting away from it all but taking control of our lives where we are. It is a concept and a practice with global implications because it is possible under any culture, in any climate and by people with any skills. Permacultue invites you to take care of yourself, your family and your immediate community, and to care for your neighbors in the widest possible sense, all around the globe. Permaculture is based on sound economics while making our lives more harmonious with the needs of the planet.

Put in its simplest terms, permaculture asks people to put as much into life as they demand from it; but it starts with each individual because that is what is immediate and within our control and because only we have the power to affect the future by acting creatively for the good of ourselves and others. Permaculture starts in the home because that is the central point in time and space from which all daily occupations radiate. Designing the home to supply much of its own needs and to consume its own outputs would be a massive contribution to global cleansing. Thoreau, in his book 'Walden' reviews his two-year experiment in simple living as a counter to industrialization and commerce that have driven people into virtual slavery. His remedy was to concentrate on simple requirements to free up time and energy for our spiritual needs. Our house should provide health for the family, peace for the spirit and harmony with the environment - and that is what permaculture strives to attain. Think globally but act locally is a slogan that reminds us, not just of our duty, but of our personal ability to affect change for the better. Permaculture is best expressed in your own garden because gardening exhibits all the qualities of planet-care - it is small scale, local, ethical, and a personal responsibility that brings together all strands of our relationship with nature; it is a common bond between families throughout the world. Permaculture is best expressed through the individual because leadership is so vital to building a better world. Every parent is a leader; every adult and every child can become a leader. All it requires is to do something when you see something that needs doing and that something may be as simple as creating a garden along the lines described in this book.

This book shows us how to meet our basic needs while leaving the earth richer; it helps us to relearn the value of nature; it helps us to understand new ways of being wealthy; it helps us to create a productive lifestyle without causing environmental damage. Although the specifics of this book are for the British Isles, the principles and philosophies are universal. At present, the earth cannot keep up with our rate of production and consumption. We must deepen our understanding of the land and our relationship to it. This doesn't mean that we all have to become peasant or subsistence farmers; permaculture seeks more rewarding paths to paradise. David Bellamy starts his preface with these words. "I have four books in my library which form the cornerstones of my hope for the future: Marcus Porcius Cato's 'Treatise on Agriculture' (about 160 AD); Robert Sharrock's 'History of the Propagation and Improvement of Vegetables by the Concurrence of Art and Nature' (1660); Hans Jenny's 'The Soil Resource' (1980); and Bill Mollison's 'permaculture' (1988). I can now add this book to the collection, for it is of great importance. This is a spring-board text, which relaunches the wisdom of almost twenty centuries into the arena where it is most needed and from which it can be most effective - the rich countries of the temperate world."

At the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit for Sustainable Development, one resolution was to declare a Decade for Education on Sustainable Development starting in 2005. We must now start thinking about what should be included in the new curriculum. Permaculture should definitely be included. If you want to move away from the consumerist lifestyle; if you want to live by more enduring values; if you are looking for answers to the question 'What can I do about curing our world?'; if you are looking for ways to improve your health and to live more harmoniously with nature; if you agree with Edmund Burke that "for the triumph of evil it is only necessary that good men do nothing"; then this well may be the book you have been looking for. This book should be in the library of everyone interested in building a better world.

The Permaculture Way.......2000-05-29

I read this book about a year ago so I can't be too detailed. But I appreciated this accessible introduction to the entire field of permaculture as a philosophy. Not just focused on farm or landscaping design, Bell explicates deeper community design and planning that mollison usually just suggests in passing. I found this book not only to be innovative, but very inspiring. It shows so many new ways to look at textiles, and all of the color pictures are superb. It is definitely something to look into for anyone interested in textiles.

a biased review.......2004-09-27

I read this book because the main character's mother is my great grandmother (and the author is my great aunt.) Hence, I found the book particularly interesting because it filled in some family history for me. The story reads something like Angela's Ashes in that it is a true memoir that has much human drama in it. For anyone interested in the experience of Arab-American immigrants and culture in the first half of the last century, this book will be very valuable. The book celebrates the women in the family who used networking within the city and church to make a better life for their children. My father, for example, ended up going to the Boston Latin School, then MIT for undergraduate and graduate school.
