Book Description
Faith Fairchild is momentarily shocked to find her husband, the Reverend Thomas Fairchild, embracing Lora Deane -- and relieved to discover the distraught nursery school teacher is merely seeking solace and advice. Lora has been receiving threatening phone calls. And she's not the only resident of tiny Aleford, Massachusetts, who is being terrorized. Ever since local environmentalists have begun protesting the proposed housing development that will destroy Beecher's Bog, the more vocal opponents have become targets of a vicious campaign of intimidation-which is more than enough reason for Faith to launch into some clandestine sleuthing. But when a body turns up in the charred ruins of a very suspicious house fire, Faith is suddenly investigating a murder -- and in serious danger of getting bogged down in a very lethal mess indeed!

Another Body for Faith..........2006-04-12
In the 7th book in the Faith Fairchild Mystery series, a group of environmentalists have the town of Aleford, Mass divided. A group of housing developers wants to build homes near the Beecher's Bog, and a group of tenacious environmentalists are trying to block the construction. Faith gets pulled by both sides, and feels tension in the town mounting. When her child's preschool teacher starts receiving threatening phone calls, and a house in the new development burns to the ground (with a body inside), Faith feels things have gone too far. But when Faith stumbles upon a body in the bog, she is determined to call out the killer.
After reading "The Body in the Big Apple" on a whim, I decided to continue with this series due to the likeable character of Faith. I like the town, and the interesting characters brought to life in this book, and thought it was an appealing mystery premise. I look forward to reading all of the books in this series.
The first book in the series is "The Body in the Belfry". Enjoy!
Developers vs. environmentalists.......2000-12-30
Lora Deane appeals to Tom and Faith Fairchild for help when she begins receiving threatening phone calls. She figures that it must be either her ex-boyfriend or a relative, Joey Madsen who is threatening her because she refuses to contribute to his new housing project at Beecher's Bog. The controversy becomes broader when the town becomes divided over the new project and those who oppose it begin to receive poison pen letters. A brick through Lora's window and the destruction of a piece of heavy equipment at the construction site deepen the community's concern. Soon there are two dead bodies and an attempted poisoning. Faith, as always, feels that her investigative powers are superior to the police, so she sets up a trap for the person she suspects is the murderer. Instead, Faith herself is trapped in a dangerous situation. This is another good "cozy" from a reliable author who also includes delicious recipes from her heroine at the end of the book.
Faith stumbles over yet another dead body and invesigates.......1997-02-18
Faith Sibley has always detested living in the fishbowl of being a Minster's daughter. So it is a shock even to her that she fell in love with the Reverend Thomas Fairchild. Her feelings are genuine and deep for the man. She leaves the sophistication of her beloved New York City to settle with him in the backwater town of Aleford. Initially, Faith was bored with her relocation, but after opening her own catering business, the town began to grow on her. Also helping her keep the ennui away is the fact that she always seems to keep stumbling over corpses and spending much of her time on solving how the victims died despite the vociferous protests from the police and her husband to mind her own business.
An independent woman, Faith goes her own way so it is not surprising that when a rash of ugly incidents, culminating in arson and murder, happens, she is in the forefront trying to discover who the culprit is. Once again, Faith stumbles over a corpse in an isolated area. After a few more days of sleuthing without any progress, Faith decides to use herself as bait in order to catch the guilty party. Her plan backfires when she becomes caught in the murderer's web with no one but herself nearby to help her.
Like the previous six Faith Fairchild novels, THE BODY IN THE BOG, is a classic cozy that showcases the pros and cons of living in a small New England town where everyone knows everyone else's most intimate secrets. Katherine Hall Page makes her characters and the town come alive, leaving the reader feel as if they are visiting with old friends. This is a very special and charming mystery series that entertains and educates at the same time. It is strongly advises to read all the books in this series for an extraordinary experience.

Like the film it is based on, this ani-manga will not convert anyone who is not already a fan. And it frustrates many fans with its careless exploitation of a previously rather well-designed series. Buy it for your kids, or if you simply MUST have every YGO item out there. Otherwise leave it alone.

Book Description
It seems almost daily we read newspaper articles and watch news reports exposing the growing epidemic of obesity in America. Our government tells us we are experiencing a major health crisis, with sixty percent of Americans classified as overweight, and one in four as obese. But how valid are these claims? In Fat Politics, J. Eric Oliver shows how a handful of doctors, government bureaucrats, and health researchers, with financial backing from the drug and weight-loss industries, have campaigned to create standards that mislead the public. They mislabel more than sixty million Americans as "overweight," inflate the health risks of being fat, and promote the idea that obesity is a killer disease. In reviewing the scientific evidence, Oliver shows there is little proof that obesity causes so much disease and death or that losing weight is what makes people healthier. Our concern with obesity, he writes, is fueled more by social prejudice, bureaucratic politics, and industry profit than by scientific fact. Misinformation pushes millions of Americans towards dangerous surgeries, crash diets, and harmful diet drugs, while we ignore other, more real health problems. Oliver goes on to examine why it is that Americans despise fatness and explores why, despite this revulsion, we continue to gain weight. Fat Politics will topple your most basic assumptions about obesity and health. It is essential reading for anyone with a stake in the nation's--or their own--good health.
Customer Reviews:
Mostly right but .......2006-11-01
In the opening chapter of this book Oliver shows just how unclear and arbitrary are notions of what it is to be 'fat' or 'overweight'. This will be the first step in making the argument that the present hysteria over the 'overweight epidemic 'in the United States is just that 'hysteria'. He will go on in the book to confute the notion that overweight is the main factor in most major illnesses. He will make a strong argument that vested economic interests, including drug and insurance companies have promoted the 'America is Fat' campaign.
He too will make the case that a more critical health factor than one's weight is one's physical fitness, dependent in good part on the way one exercises.
All of this is in one sense very convincing. And yet there are clear signs and statistical evidence indicating that Americans have in the past ten years alone become considerably heavier. Oliver acknowledges that being very overweight does contribute to arthritis , aching joints, and makes physical activity more difficult. Moreover feeling overweight and feeling pain because of it connect very probably with an increased level of individual depression .
I am not a specialist in any of these areas, but my overall feeling is that while there may be much exaggeration, panicking, idiotic worshipping of thinness, futile and even damaging dieting, there is also a lot of illness and sorrow which comes from being overweight and worrying so much about it.
Oliver is probably right that this is not as massive a problem as it is being made out to be. But I do not think he is right to by and large deny its existence.
Fat Politics.......2006-07-18
I found this book to be very informative and at last see that someone beside me feels that fat is being blamed on everything. Being a middle aged woman, though, I can attest to what the extra pounds have done to my knees, hips and ankles. I have spent my entire life, though, trying to not make myself a victim, but with discrimination being what it is, rude people being who they are, and being the butt of stares and comments, even though I have spent my entire life fighting fat, it is hard not to be the victim, here. I hope that a few doctors and a lot of men read this book. I hate being fat and fear dying early, but this book made me start to reason out that maybe I was not meant to be a thin person. I have had an echo gram, exercise stress test, and I pay regular visits to my Dr. The tests show I am in the lower third of the population to die of heart related illness. I try and take better care of my health, knowing that I am fat, and I think I am more conscientous than many thin people.
Good book, that I didn't fully agree with.......2006-04-20
At least this book mentions that osteoarthritis is highly correlated with body weight: the heavier you are, the more chance that your knees or hips will give out, especially if you are a woman (sorry, but it is true). I think that the author is right that to some extent, science has been manipulated by the diet industry and by scare tactics (let's face it, groups get heard by trying to scare us). I would not want to read this and then give myself the "all clear" as an overweight person, because I know about the impact (literally) of even 10 pounds of extra weight on the knees and hips. But this book is a good addition to the overall literature on dieting and weight.
It's not the fat, it's the politics.......2006-04-06
This is a book that should be read by everyone with a "weight problem." Oliver does a terrific job of showing how the so-called obesity epidemic has little to do with genuine health concerns. Instead, not surprisingly, it's all about money: drug manufacturers who finance "obesity institutes" that hype the dangers of overweight to sell diet drugs; diet and exercise companies with a vested interest in convincing people that their excess pounds are hazardous to their health; bariatric surgeons who want your insurance money; researchers who find that focusing on the dangers of obesity greatly improves their chances of getting grant money and publishing their findings.
Oliver isn't saying that it's OK to weigh 400 lbs; instead, he points out that (except in the most extreme cases) the dangers of overweight and the benefits of losing weight are greatly exaggerated -- in fact, trying to lose weight can be more harmful to one's health than staying fat, and very thin people are often far less healthy than fat people. Numerous studies (which he cites in detail) have disproved the conventional wisdom, but these are routinely ignored or misinterpreted. He also points out that the main reason that the incidence of obesity has increased in America is not that Americans have gained a lot of weight, but rather that the threshold for classifying someone as "obese" has been lowered (duh!).
Oliver's most noteworthy point, I think, is this: excess weight is not the problem, it's a symptom. The real culprits in "weight-linked" diseases aren't the pounds themselves, but the behaviors and conditions associated with them. Fat people who exercise are healthier than thin people who don't; following a healthy diet is beneficial even if it doesn't lead to weight loss; and many conditions (such as insulin resistance) are likelier to be the cause of excess weight, rather than the other way around.
From my own experience, I can confirm Oliver's contention that doctors' obsession with weight loss as a cure-all often diverts them from dealing with the real problem. High blood pressure runs in my family, and afflicts both fat and thin people; but the same doctors who prescribed medication for my thin relatives told me that ALL I had to do was lose weight and my blood pressure would go down. After 30 years (!), during which my weight was all over the map while my blood pressure steadily climbed, I finally found a doctor who listened to reason, and I've kept my blood pressure under control ever since with medication. (Footnote: A few years later, I lost 40 lbs -- and my blood pressure didn't budge.)
Being a political scientist and a statistician, Oliver also offers his conclusions about the social implications of fat, which I found interesting but not always convincing (his argument for why thinness is valued in white women seemed rather circular to me). The chief value of the book, I think, is that he's done an excellent job of amassing the medical and statistical data, and showing that many of our assumptions about obesity are based on myth rather than fact.
Place padding on the wall before reading this!.......2006-03-20
If you want to learn the real truth about weight, and what your doctor keeps telling you, this is the place to go. But beware, you may become so angry that you want to pound your head against the wall. People have tried suing McDonald's, but the ones who should be sued are the weight loss industry, the drugs makers, the doctors who push surgery, the Jenny Craigs, and so on. And yes, the media, which keeps pounding on how unhealthful being overweight is, how ugly ... but seldom mentions how deadly anorexia can be, and how many youngsters are pushed into anorexia or bulimea by the media's drumbeat of thin-thin-thin.

Book Description
Love Asian food but too intimidated to make it at home? Do you find yourself flipping through an Asian cookbook, and then going out for Thai noodles or Korean Barbecue, rather than going into your kitchen? When Marnie Henricksson gave up her noodle shop in Greenwich Village, and settled down to raise her kids in the 'burbs, she had difficulty finding her favorite Asian ingredients at the local supermarket. So, Marnie tweaked her recipes to work with readily available ingredients, allowing her and her family to enjoy Asian food everyday. In Everyday Asian, Marnie shares seventy-five of her favorite dishes with home cooks.
As the recipes draw on the traditional cuisines of Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and India, Marnie begins the book with a chapter detailing how to find, make, and store necessary ingredients, as well as giving advice on invaluable kitchen equipment for Asian cooking.
Here's your opportunity to master classicdishes such as Pad Thai, Chinese Pork Roasts, Spring Rolls, and Vietnamese Pho, and expand your imagination with Marnie's innovative recipes for Asian Pesto (replace pine nuts with peanuts and Italian basil with Thai basil, cilantro, and mint) and Spicy Chicken Wings (an American classic with a good dose of Asian spices).
It's clear from the abundance of Japanese, Korean, Indian, and Vietnamese restaurants that Americans are crazy about Asian food; however, cooking the real thing at home has always been a problem if you don't live near an Asian market. Now, with Marnie's easy-to-follow recipes, enjoying Asian food as often as you like is just a supermarket aisle away.

Good book........2005-02-03
I wanted to start cooking healthier and I like Chinese, Japanese, and Thai food, so I bought this book. I'm a bachelor who knows how to cook just a few things, such as hot cereal, meatloaf, etc. I also bought a good chefs knife and some good pots and pans as well as this book and they do make a difference.
After reading the intro two chapters on ingredients and items needed to cook I went to my local asian grocer and bought a few sauces, a morter & pestle, and then went to my regular grocery store to buy some spices, rice, and veggies. That night I cooked up 3 dishes: steamed jasmine rice (in an old Black & Decker steamer someone gave me for Xmas years ago), Pepper Marinated Salmon (had some salmon in the freezer from fishing but didn't know what to do with it), and Sauteed fresh spinach with carmelized onions (and fish sauce). Aside from overuse of the salty fish sauce on the veggies (my mistake) the meal was EXCELLENT. And that's just one day after buying the cookbook.
The one thing I wish was that there were more easy noodle recipes. I'd trade the supplied Asian BBQ chapter for more noodle recipes and info if it was up to me.
Quick and easy asian meals are delicious.......2003-11-01
If you lived in NY about 10 years ago and spent time in the West Village, you probably ate at Marnie's Noodle Shop and loved it, watching them cook simple, brightly flavored noodle dishes behind the small counter, and then, best of all, eating the yummy results.
Now I know these dishes are even easier to recreate at home than I suspected. Using minimal ingredients for maximum flavor, I was amazed at how easy and tasty these recipes are. It's not "classical" asian cooking--ingredients and techniques are simplified, but to great effect. I've tried some dumbed-down asian recipes and been very disappointed, but not here.
After the first meal I cooked from the book, Korean Beef Noodles, my husband started jotting down a business plan for opening a noodle shop. A great Sesame Noodle recipe is included, along with soups, salads, appetizers, and entrees like Chinese Red Cooked Beef Stew and Salmon with Tomato and Garam Masala.
I've recommended this book to my brother in law, a great cook, and he is in love with it. I just cooked the Burmese Chicken Curry tonight and it was amazing.
Thank you, Marnie!!!!

Customer Reviews:
A great, FUN book for new and veteran dog owners alike.......2001-07-09
Put off by the K.I.S.S. branding? Don't be. They hired the right guy to write this book.
You will enjoy it. The book is filled with quality images, colorful subtitles, and negative space--resulting in a visually stimulating read.
I bought this book for the couple who adopted Honey, a wonderful stray I rescued. But in actuality, I gave it to the people mainly for the dog's benefit. (Those of you who regularly place dogs in new homes may want to consider using this book for that same purpose.)
Fogle demonstrates obvious concern for the physical and emotional welfare of dogs. A great part of Fogle's motivation is to make people better owners--for their dogs' sake.
The book is thorough. From genetics to adoption dog temperment testing. From grooming and accessorizing to dog-proofing your home, garden, and yard. From playing to training to dealing with aggression. Then there are several chapters on veterinary care: things like giving your dog a physical with details like how to take your dog's temperature, pulse, and heart rates--and what to do if they are off by varying amounts. There's also a chapter on the special concerns of associated with aging canines.
Veteran dog owners will also find the book interesting. Fogle begins with a plausible--but unsupported--opinion on the evolution of dog from wolf. Why do dogs have floppy ears, crowded teeth, and smaller brains than wolves? Fogle believes he knows.
He moves logically into a discussion of how the breed types came about and how their original purpose shaped their builds and temperments.
He discusses picking the right breed or mix and picking the right individual dog, whether a puppy from a breeder or an adult dog from a shelter. (I think he falls short in discussing breeds' drawbacks. For example, he doesn't mention that many people find the cute little Jack Russel terrier to be a terror.)
He goes on to thoroughly, yet succinctly, discuss most of the issues a dog owner is likely to worry or wonder about. Being a vet himself, he devotes a lot of detailed attention to safety and health concerns, some of which will be new to even experienced dog owners.
If you want to a give a book to dog owners, a book that will make them better care takers, a book that they will actually read, this is the one.

Fun, Very Comprehensive, Accurate (mostly).......2001-07-09
Put off by the K.I.S.S. branding? Don't be. They hired the right guy to write this book.
You will enjoy it. The book is filled with quality images, subtitles, and negative space--resulting in a visually stimulating read.
It begins with the author's very interesting opinion on the evolution of dog from wolf. Why do dogs have floppy ears, crowded teeth, and smaller brains than wolves? Fogle believes he knows. His explanation is very plausible. It's a little lacking in its understanding of the interrelation of genetic traits, but still good.
He goes on to thoroughly, yet succinctly, discuss most of the issues a dog owner is likely to worry or wonder about, and a few more to boot. Of course, being a vet himself, he devotes a lot of attention to safety and health concerns.
It also seems that part of Fogle's motivation is to make people better owners FOR THIER DOGS' SAKE. I like his advice to owners that they let their dogs be dogs.
All in all, this book is quite fine book and an especially good one to give to a new dog owner.
Everything you need to know.......2001-02-05
I bought this book for a friend (new puppy owner) and ended up going back to the bookstore a week later to get one for myself (owner of a 7 year-old Boston Terrier). This book covers everything you need to know, from training to grooming to feeding habits. The author, Bruce Fogle, has a great, reassuring tone to his writing that will make reading about your best friend fun and helpful!
Dogs for Dummies and more.......2001-01-23
My family and I are planning on purchasing a dog within the next 3 weeks and I felt it necessary to gain as much knowledge as possible before then. In searching for a book that would give me all the information I could need before and after the purchase, I narrowed my choices down to two books (this one and Dogs for Dummies). In comparing both books side by side at a local bookstore, I determined that this is the better book. In my opinion this book is easier to understand, is easier to look at (love the color pictures), gives more information (even gives websites where you gain more knowledge), has general characterisics of the dog breeds, has a "Info Sheet" for your dog, and is overall a higher quality book that the Dogs for Dummies. This has everything that you could ever need from a "Dog Reference" book, especially if you are new to the responsibilities of owning a dog. This book has it all. Without it, I would have never been prepared to give my dog everything it needs.

The Care of Bronze Sculpture: Recommended Maintenance Programs for the Collector
ASIN: 0887406297 |
Book Description
Art flourished in France to an exciting and unprecedented degree in the 19th century. Sculpture was a part of this fantastic explosion of creative genius with such artistic giants as Rodin, Barye, d'Angers and Carpeaux. At the same time technological advances in the bronze industry transformed sculpture from an art form for public plazas and the rich to art for living rooms and vestibules of even the middle class. The result has been an abundant supply of nineteenth century French bronzes-some common reproductions, and some extremely valuable limited editions. In this important reference, you can discover a wealth of information. This extraordinary volume contains a complete encyclopedia of almost 750 French artists, with biographies, listings of works (along with size and foundry when known), museum pieces in France and elsewhere, and recent sales. It also includes an overview of 19th century bronze sculpture, the foundries that cast the bronzes, and methods used to cast works. 1000 photographs capture the beauty of the pieces and help identify these and similar works.

an inquirer's book.......2007-01-30
This book was perfect for my parents who like to know all they can about the antiques they have. This book is well illustrated and thorough. Of all the bronze books they ahve recently aquired, this one is their favorite. They wanted the book for the Mene and Barye bronze information in particular and were pleased to find most of their pieces in the book. I would recommend this book for those wanting to know about thier bronzes and the people behind them. ( My parents love it.)

Firstly collectors of Bronze figures of the classical period will be able to use this as a reference for studying artists which thewy may encounter in their antique hunting. The book is large and imrpessive and handsomely presented with colour and B & W photographs.
For the second group (lovers of quality books) this one is very impressive and is of the type that would make a great coffee table book.
I am in both categories and will use this publication for both avid collecting and just as a good read.
Book Description
In his best-seller, Square Foot Gardening, Mel Bartholomew showed gardeners his revolutionary system of planting in square foot sections to boost vegetable yields. Now in his follow-up, Mel tells you everything you need to know to be a successful square foot gardener. Earn $5,000 or $10,000 or even $20,000 per year - even with limited time and space.
This book takes the Square Foot method beyond normal home use and shows how to produce an ABUNDANT HARVEST for profit, to feed a large family, or to provide food and/or business experience for a group or institution.
Customer Reviews:
informative.......2007-04-06
Very good book if you've ever though about selling your produce. I think it also is good if you like can or freeze your own also.
CA$H from Square Foot Gardening.......2007-01-03
The revised edition of his first book, "Square Foot Gardening" is a much better source of information on how to use his system to grow food. The reason I bought this book was that it was supposed to have much more information about growing food on a large scale. That was what I was interested in. But, if you are more interested in marketing your produce, there is some info here that would be better suited to that.
Wonderful and workable idea.......2001-01-19
A very practical approach to using your garden to make money. Anyone can do it, as long as there are people to feed near you! Don't hesitate to grab this book as soon as possible if you dream of selling your crops for cash.
Enjoyed the book, rather helpful.......2000-03-28
Mel Bartholomew wrote a very helpful book for a beginning gardener. Even without using the money making guides, it still provides plenty of information about the square foot gardening system.
