5 out of 5 stars Another Extremely Enjoyable Read.......2007-02-21

John Maddox Roberts is the pseudonym of Mark Ramsay, author of numerous works of science fiction and fantasy, in addition to his successful historical SPQR mystery series. He lives in New Mexico with his wife.

Anyone who is a fan of Lindsey Davis, Steven Saylor or David Wishart will love the SPQR series of books by the author. Once again we have an addition to the ever growing number of amateur detectives patrolling the streets of ancient Rome, solving mysteries and crimes. Not all at the same time, I may add, in fact not even in the same centuries. Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger, a high-born bad boy, is the offering of the author and he is just as interesting, likeable and believable as the leading characters from the author's contemporaries.

It had been one of the best summer's in the long history of the might that was the Roman Republic. Her legions had, as they always did swept all before them. Rome's enemies were either on their knees in supplication or their bones had been ground into the dust. But in Rome itself there was great unrest. The streets ran red with the blood of Rome's own citizen's. Decius Caecilius Metellus the younger was convinced that there was a conspiracy afoot to overthrow the senate. A sinister group who would stop at nothing to achieve their own ends. A group that could only be infiltrated from within. But admission into this group of people carried a grim price. The life of Decius's closest friend and possibly his own as well.

4 out of 5 stars Two for two in terms of excellent writing.......2006-10-16

This is of course the second of the ten in the series and I enjoyed it very much. It maps nicely with the actual events of the time and you have a sense of reading a piece written by some living thru the events.

5 out of 5 stars SPQR II: The Cataline Conspiracy.......2006-06-30

Actually I am writing re: SPQR I - V. I have read these of the series to date. First, I must remark about the verisimilitude; all of these volumes are realistic. I have some knowledge of the history of the last century BCE and to date I've found no error. I have learned some history that is new to me. (At first I checked primary sources for verification and always Roberts was correct.) For me the sine qua non of a good historical novel is accurate history. Character and plot development are there, seasoned with lots of exciting (and humerous) events.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting historical and mystery.......2006-04-04

The SPQR series is great to read if you remember your Roman history or Latin courses-but not so much that you are a true expert who might find hilarity in the authors's slight mistakes rather than where the author intended. You can tell that author Roberts can barely suppress his laughter, under the worldly, if not cynical, views of his "hero," the noble non-entity of famous family, the ill-ustrious Decius Metellus. In this Roberts reminds me of the Lindsay Davis novels, also of a Roman "detective," Falco, but set over a century later, when SPQR no longer meant the Senate but the Emperor's will. A more exactly comparable book, with a different point of view and heavier load of history, is the more "serious" coverage of another private detective, Gordianus the Finder, in Catalina's Riddle by
Steven Saylor (Roma sub Rosa sereis).

5 out of 5 stars History, Mystery, & Machiavellian Machinations.......2004-07-22

The Nero Wolfe stories all revolve around a New York City peopled with numerous interesting characters who reappear in story after story. Half the fun of Nero Wolfe is the comfortable interplay between and among familiar characters. This is especially true of Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. A neat mystery is set out, the characters banter back and forth as they set to solving it, and some sort of a caper is concocted to aid the solution.

The SPQR series seems to be in the same mold. The city is Rome in the declining years of the Republic, and some of the recurring characters are actual historical figures. There is no Nero Wolfe to sit idly sipping beer and thinking as Archie Goodwin does all the heavy lifting. Decius Caecilius Metellus must do both the thinking and the legwork. He's as accomplished as Archie Goodwin in handling the rough stuff, but he's not as sharp as Nero Wolfe in figuring out whodunnit.

The stories begin with Decius as a minor government functionary who encounters murder at every corner. As he sets about solving the murders, he invariably irritates powerful and dangerous men, uncovers a threat to the very existence of Rome, and dodges attempts on his life as he unravels the mystery. With each succeeding book through the first three, he climbs a little higher in Roman politics and makes more and more enemies.

In the first three books, there really won't be a lot of mystery about whodunnit if you're familiar with this period of ancient history, because Roberts is very faithful to the history. The real mystery, and what kept me turning the pages, is "how's Decius going to survive solving the murders?"

The conspiracy of Catiline is a familiar episode in Roman history. Sallust wrote a monograph about it. Cicero published his speeches on it. Maddox follows the course of the conspiracy very carefully. You can get the actual history of the conspiracy of Catelina from Sallust's monograph on the subject and from Cicero's recorded speeches against Catelina. If you're not familiar with the story, you might want to wait until you've read this book before reading the histories.

Now, if a mystery carefully follows the course of known historical events, how can there be any mystery to it? Furthermore, how can there be any entertainment value to it? Let me count the ways:

1. If you don't know the history, you've still got a mystery. Even if you do, you'll have fun puzzling out Maddox's fictional details of the conspiracy.

2. A good mystery derives as much entertainment value from the interplay of interesting characters as from the mysteries themselves. From Holmes and Watson to Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin and beyond, the cast of characters turns mediocre stories into very good stories. Much of the fun of the Decius Metellus stories comes from the interplay of the interesting characters Maddox peoples his stories with.

3. Many mysteries (Columbo, e.g.) give the audience the culprit from the beginning, and the mystery is "how's the good guy gonna catch the bad guy?" In the Decius Metellus stories, the mystery is "how's Decius going to survive?" Decius alienates all the powerful men of Rome, foils numerous attempts on his life, and somehow escapes with his hide. Each of the first three stories ends with Decius, having solved the mystery, fleeing Rome pursued by Furies.

The stories start at a sedate pace, but as the tension builds the pace quickens. In the last third of the story things are happening at breakneck speed, and the reader breathes a sigh of relief as Decius hotfoots it out of Rome.

If you like history and you like mystery, you'll like this story of a young politician unwinding a serpentine plot to overthrow the government.

    Product Description

Roberts again proves that he's perfectly at home in the urban sprawl of ancient Rome as his sleuth Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger follows a trail of suspicious deaths to the heart of a dangerous conspiracy. When a banker and a building contractor are murdered in the street, Roman officials are disinterested. Although the second murder was clumsily amateurish, Decius suspects the murders are related and ominous portents of things to come: he also has stumbled on a cache of arms hidden in the Temple of Saturn. Well born but temporarily stuck in a low-level government job, Decius needs only to contrive a bit of grumbling at parties to gain a reputation as a malcontent--and an invitation to further his ambitions by joining Lucius Sergius Catilina's treasonous bid for power. As Decius pursues the investigation, his account is spiced with observations on Rome's politics and personalities. Readers familiar with the period will be entertained by passing references, such as to the posturing Julius Caesar or to young Catullus, fresh from the country and besotted with Clodia.

5 out of 5 stars Some great reading here.......2004-09-26

Here is a collection of short stories by writers who may not be well known but who are clearly talented. Among my favorites are Teri Gibson's poignant "Paintings by Roerich," Robert Kenny's suspenseful "The Long Ride Home," Peter Rennebohm's eerie " Dream Stealers," and a pair of thought-provoking tales by Greg Stoker, "Thirty Silver Keys" and "Wish You Were Here." Wolfgang Zeuner's "A Blast From the Past" provides a fun concluding story.
The weakest among these stories is Alan Yee's "A Cry in the night," but with some maturing and continuing work, this 12-year-old writer will bring forth greater things.
I should note that I am one of the authors but I have not mentioned my story here.

I'm training for the Breast Cancer 3Day walk -- 60 miles in three days -- and stumbled across this book during an internet search for blister prevention and cures. I got a copy right away. I have never before participated in any endurance sports and needed as much good advice as I could find and believe me, this book delivered. Certainly, there are parts of it that don't apply to my current activities, however the quality of the information, the helpful references to products and where to access them, and clear instructions in foot care have saved me countless blisters so far. I love the focus on prevention. The section on duct tape was particularly intriguing and helpful for me. I'm telling all my fellow distance walkers about this book!

Unless peple are into long-distance running, few people have any idea on how to fix your feet, especially prevent injutries before theu happen.

I know the author and other people who contributed to this booki and can verify their expertise in the field of running and fixing feet.
The book is very detailed, covers almost every imaginable aspect of ultra running. It covers most potential problems that can arise from teh sport and it's preventions and solutions if trouble occurs.

No ultra runner should be without this book as it could save you from lots of potential misery.

Have you ever hiked or ran and ruined your feet? Have you ever felt discouraged about your feet, didn't know what to do about it or, most importantly, what to do the Next Time?
Then Fixing Your Feet will be the answer to your prayers. No one else addresses the myriad problems that can arise when your feet are stressed to the max. John Vonhof leaves no stone unturned, pun intended, in this most thorough book about foot problems such as blisters, corns, structural problems. He deals with prevention as well as treatment. It's not just His viewpoint. He has interviewed countless athletes, hikers and endurance runners and quotes from their experiences and solutions.
He offers concrete advice with specific product recommendations and yet perhaps the best advice of all, stated over and over again, is not to take your feet for granted. They are the most important part of any trek or race you plan.
Even if you have never had any foot problems, if you are planning a hike or race, read this book and be prepared. You'll still be walking or running while others have to drop out.

5 out of 5 stars The benchmark for endurance runners in footcare.......2003-06-14

Duct tape. Bag balm. Pliers. Most people who crew for me are a little alarmed when they notice these in my little black bag of foot care - but all are necessary and, although not all are specifically endorsed by John Vonhof, they are symptomatic of his core belief: different things work for different people.

Like many ultrarunners, I believed that blisters were just something that happened as a natural consequence of thirty or forty mile training runs - but I picked this book up in the hope of learning some good preventive measures. And I found a lot to experiment with, and eventually found a combination of items that (currently) work for me.

The book itself is well written, if a bit clinical. It does seem to be aimed at serious endurance athletes, so it might not be that useful to most sprint triathletes and marathon runners. However, if terms like Devil's Thumb, Badwater, and Chinscraper are immediately recognizable, buy this book. I've completed a half-dozen fifty-mile plus ultras since following the advice in this book with only minor blisters - and I have this book to thank for it!

5 out of 5 stars How to keep your feet healthy over 100 miles ..........2003-04-24

John Vonhof has put together a valuable reference book, based on a lot of experience with the ultrarunning community - mainly American but with many members throughout Europe and Australia. The demands of long distance running are of course extreme, and provide a good test-bed for techniques and recommendations which may be of value to anyone who is on their feet a lot, not only runners. A friend who is a personal trainer found this book to be the solution to his foot problems (heel spurs).

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!.......2003-03-19

I'm not an athlete, just a "40-something" struggling to keep fit. I'm hoping to be able to continue doing my daily moderate 3 mile dirt road up-and-down loop walk for many years to come. This year it hit me: I have to take care of my feet --proactively -- or I may not be able to continue walking well into my senior years. With this book, I'm confident I can deal with some emerging problems (calluses, bunions, ets.) and prevent others. The detailed information on boots and socks (e.g., types and changing) was especially helpful. And, the recommendations and tips throughout and from an impressive number of serious athletes are a definite plus and make for all the more interesting and worthwhile reading. Obviously, this book is great for athletes, but also dabblers like me, as well as, I would imagine, anyone who spends a lot of time on-the-job on his/her feet. Many would appreciate this book as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Save your feet in advance!.......2002-06-24

It's true the writer specializes in foot problems and prevention of same for the running and racing athletes, but other athletes have these problems, too. It's not just about the blister care or foot taping that go into a successful long-distance race, but the day-to-day foot care needed for other sports -- or daily living for that matter. Do you stand at work all day? Feet hurt by 2pm? You're a canditate for "Fixing Your Feet."

Not only shoe fit and sock material, but insoles and orthotics and foot biomechanics are covered -- knowledge needed for various sports, including that of my chosen endeavor, weight training.

Thumbs up on this book if your feet hurt!

5 out of 5 stars Fixing Your Feet is a must Read.......2001-10-09

Fixing Your Feet is a must for any long or ultra-distance runner, hiker, triathlete or adventure racer. Your chances of successful training and racing will be greatly improved after having read Fixing your Feet.

John Vonhof's experience, research and work on preventive maintenance and treatment for foot problems has been a real gift for athletes and others who are on their feet for long periods of time in adverse conditions. In ultra distance running and adventure racing, it is often the feet that are the first to break down. John's work has provided us with a complete manual on proper foot care. This book has made it possible for so many long and ultra-distance athletes to be able to put in the high mileage needed to be able to complete long races without being disabled due to foot problems. So many an athlete can give credit to their training and racing successes to John for his work.

John discusses in detail, the steps needed to prevent foot problems and describes in laymen's terms how to treat foot problems that do occur. His explanation on the biomechanics of the foot is very easy to understand and clearly shows how your feet are prone to certain problems. He talks of hot spots, blisters, plantar fascitis, tendonitis and other common foot problems associated with shoe, boot and sock selection and proper fitting.

With ultra-endurance sports becoming so popular, John's work filled a huge void. I highly recommend this book to any athlete who spends much time on their feet.

While slick television cooking shows and high-profile celebrity cookbooks are all the rage these days, The Church Supper Cookbook takes us back to a simpler time when potluck suppers would inspire each guest to bring their specialty dish to the table, whether it was that "fabulous lemon pie you make" or lasagna or ham loaf. We love these types of dishes because they remind us of childhood, of home, of "the good old days," but sadly, it seems, we can never quite duplicate them at home using a standard cookbook. The Church Supper Cookbook sets out to rectify that situation by presenting 375 of those homespun favorites, collected from parish members of churches across the country.

Filled with quiches and casseroles, pasta salads and potato salads, hearty breads and upside-down cakes, this book will surely transport readers to the potluck dinners of their past. These sorts of dishes--such as Spaghetti Pie, Chicken Sour Cream Bake, and cheesy Spinach Squares--are treasured not only because they are tasty, but also because they're easy to prepare, inexpensive, and hearty enough to feed a crowd. As such, the recipes, as you might expect, rely heavily on canned goods, pre-made sauces and frozen vegetables, and sour cream, bacon, cheese, and butter for flavor. So, if you're on a diet or prefer your meals to be made with fresh ingredients or from scratch, steer clear of this cookbook. But if you are drawn to kitschy Americana, or yearn for Pineapple Upside-Down Ham Loaf, The Church Supper Cookbook certainly fits the bill. --Robin Donovan

3 out of 5 stars A More Sophisticated Church Fund Raising Cookbook.......2003-12-26

There are two dangers in evaluating this book. One can overestimate it's value by focusing on the very reasonable price for an advertised 375 recipes, and buy it's patter that these recipes include valuable secrets which will produce better results than what, a New York celebrity chef, probably. Alternately, one can look down one's nose at the source of the recipes and claim that there is little value in these homespun recipes.

There are elements of truth in to both positions, but both positions are guilty of not appreciating the audience for which the book was written. The book is a grown-up and slightly citified version of recipes assembled by church groups into a book to be sold to make money for the parish or womens group or some other worthy civic cause. Almost all recipes will produce tasty results without resorting to any hard to find or hard to make ingredient. Few, if any, will ask you to skin a sweet pepper or bake a fillet in paper. Even better, the book contains homespun versions of classic cuisine such as Cassoulet and Coq au Vin and is not shy about asking you to use a few cups of wine in some dishes. This is a perfect cookbook for rural New Hampshire. It does not even bother me that most of the recipes came from the same part of the country. The book may have been better with a better representation of southern, New Orleans, or southwest cuisine, but I don't think the book's audience will really miss it.

What I am afraid the book's audience will miss is an original culinary experience. I just don't see the point of making Coq au Vin with boneless chicken breasts as this book's recipe suggests. You can get a reasonable dish with a winey taste in mushrooms and white meat, but that isn't Coq au Vin. To get real Coq au Vin, you must go to Julia Child or David Boulud. You would even find something more authentic and worthy of the name in a Martha Stewart volume.

Another problem with this book is that there is a lot of inconsistency in the style of recipe writing, even with the single experienced editor.

I think this book would have been a lot better if it had left out all of it's baking recipes. The recipe for pastry dough will probably work, but it totally ignores the wisdom of every good pastry chef I've seen of the Food Network regarding using cold ingredients, handling the dough sparingly, and having a delicate touch with the butter. Good cooking often requires finesse. Good baking always requires finesse. I especially dislike the statement at the beginning of the book which recommends substituting butter for margerine. This substitution can be disasterous in some cases such as cookie baking, and somewhat grim in many other cases, especially if you happen to hit upon a margerine with the warning against cooking in small print.

The book has a patina of erudition in it's naming classic dishes such as Paella Valenciana, but a native of Valencia would probably get heartburn over the statement that Paella Valenciana is made in all sorts of different ways. It is true than hundreds of culinary writers have said this about `paella', but not about `Paella Valenciana'. A sample of false erudition there.

This is a good book for what it does. I would recommend it as a second cookbook, as long as the first cookbook was `The Joy of Cooking' or `James Beard's American Cookery' or some other well regarded basic cookbook which gives proper attention to the subtlties. For a more sophisticated first cookbook, the old standard `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' is as good as it was 40 years ago.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-11-04

The subtitle is very misleading.Having lived in New England, I love it as much as anyone, but to say the recipes come from across the country is a misrepresentation. Ninety-five percent of the recipes are from NH,CT,and NY. There are a couple from CA and one from another state, but that is it. The recipes are fine, but certainly not what I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting... maybe too truthful for some. Not enough pictures!.......2007-08-20

This is a HISTORY book, not a "let's choose a bunny breed" book. I like the historic drawings, and black and white photos of old breeds. The history is a bit sobering. The methods of developing new breeds, decades and even hundreds of years old, are contrived and cruel. By today's standards of animal care, many of the breeds we have come to admire and cherish would never have come about. I love angoras and lop eared bunnies. Though I would never mistreat them, in any way, to condemn the history of their making would be a bit... hypocritical. They are here now, so all we can do is care for their descendants with the compassion they rightfully deserve. Years of breeding, and selecting have made them vulnerable. They are dependant, so we must strive to be responsible care takers.

Many areas of the book spark interest in things that I hadn't thought about, only to suddenly stop, and move on to the next topic. This book, though long, would be better if even longer. Perhaps historic documents are incomplete, or unavailable?

The color photos are lumped together in the center. I do wish there were more, and larger, photos, and more breeds represented.

I am also still looking for a good "picture book" of rabbit breeds. Lots of rabbit breed books are cluttered with general rabbit care instruction, which is not specific enough for me, and in many cases, too general to be correct. I'd like to see something available in rabbit breed books, which explains the behavior traits, health concerns, and judging qualities of all the breeds, both extinct, and current. -Sharon Warren, www.rabbitsandribbons.com

1 out of 5 stars Nothing but breeder crap!.......2007-01-10

Well I thought this book would tell me about the history and facts about rabbit breeds of the world like the characteristics, behavior and possible health risks a breed could have, also weather it's gentle, large or prone to problems (like for example a well writtien cat or dog breed book would tell). But all this book here talks about it mainly the breeders who developed the breeds, messed with the breeds, mutated the breeds and then at the certain point perfected and brought up a breed. VERY disappointing!!! The history fact includes also some rabbit recipes...and I dont want to say more about that subject but in my opinion this book is nothing for real rabbit lovers who own a pet rabbit as dear companion since the book is mainly for people interested in treating and breeding those beautiful and lovable pets and nothing but disposable STOCK!

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes short on histories of individual breeds, overall a wealth of information.......2006-03-23

I was initially a little disappointed in this book, as I was expecting more history on individual breeds, but the sheer number of breeds, current and extinct, makes that a mammoth task for any author, even one as knowledgable as Mr. Whitman, to contain in one volume. As it stands, his rather brief histories on the breeds in the book makes for interesting (if not in- depth) reading and also makes this a valuable book for anyone interested in domestic rabbit breeds. I'd like to see a companion volume by the author, perhaps focusing on histories of the current breeds, to allow the author to fully explore the potential of this topic.

Having said that, the histories on rabbit breeding practices are very well explored, if not always the most pleasant reading for those interested in rabbits as companion animals. It is my opinion that those of us interested in rabbits as companion animals should be aware of the practices that eventually led to the companion rabbits of today, however I know that some may be sensitive to such material and may not wish to read about the history of rabbit breeding. I, however, found his knowledge in this area to be quite interesting, if not always pleasant. The gentleman obviously has spent a great deal of time in the gathering of some of these more obscure histories.

There are many editorial errors in this book, mispellings and such, which can be annoying at times and slightly distracting from the author's work, however I feel that these minor irritants should not dissuade anyone seriously interested in the subject matter.

Mr. Whitman's writing is very dry and to the point; something that many hoping for facinating tales of rabbits may not be prepared for. It reads like a history book, full of names and dates and other such information. The one area of exception, where the author's passions carried him on the path of a storyteller, concerns the Enderby Island Rabbit; the breed which, according to the author's bio on the back of the book, he is most active in breeding, along with other more unusual rabbit breeds. He also goes into quite a bit of depth into the infamous Belgian Hare, although with less enthusiasm than for the Enderby Island rabbit. There is quite a bit of detail dedicated to the varities of Lop rabbits, current and extinct, which is quite engrossing for fanciers of the Lop. Fanciers of the New Zealand will find many pages dedicated to this breed, although this section at times reads a bit dry. For those interested in extinct breeds, there are interesting photos or reproductions of paintings, etc. where available to the author, accompanied by sometimes a wealth of information, and sometimes a mere few lines. Sadly, this is the only legacy of some such bygone breeds.

If you are interested in this book for a historical perspective of rabbit breeding or the history behind how today's rabbit breeds came to be, I'd highly recommend this book. If you are squeamish about past practices and the subject of breeding, however, this book is probably not one you'll want to read cover- to cover. However, I doubt you'll find the types of historical information on rabbit breeds contained in one volume anywhere else.

This colorful, large-format book helps even the most timid beginner quickly get up to speed in Microsoft's affordable desktop-publishing tool. The hands-on advice and how-to hints begin with teaching you how to navigate the interface, manipulate views, use the toolbars, and get help when you need it. The authors then show you how to add and edit text, text effects, lists, shapes, clip art, pictures, borders, shadows, and captions. You add tables; use the mail-merge facility; and work with the copy-fitting, tracking, kerning, leading, spell-checking, and other editing tools. A chapter devoted to creating Web publication teaches how to add hyperlinks, hot spots, sounds, animation, and navigation bars; double-check the page's appearance; and publish your site. You also create specialty publications, such as greeting cards, banners, and business forms. Finally, you print your publication and learn about using printing services. A glossary of PC and design terms closes the book. --Kathleen Caster
