4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this one!.......2007-08-24

I am a huge fan of Susan Conant's Dog Lovers' Mystery series, and this is a good book in this series. It is extremely funny to watch Holly as she becomes dog trainer extraordinaire to the mob. She finds herself in all kinds of hot water while she is training this surprisingly funny Godfather's Norwegian Elkhound puppy. Another good thing about the book was the introduction of a brand new puppy to the menagerie. Holly's former boyfriend Steve has purchased one of Rowdy's puppies, and the way the small pup is portrayed in the book is so realistic. To anyone who has ever owned and loved a brand-new puppy, it is a magical experience. Ms. Conant knows what she's talking about when it comes to things canine. This is one of my favourite series. I love the characters, both animal and human, and I love Holly. She is a delightful character. I love her wit and down-to-earth charm. Can't wait for the next one.

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable, if it had the author's usual flaws.......2007-02-27

While many have lambasted this book for the author's usual stereotypical characters, I enjoyed this one. It had a cheerfulness (except for the vampire character) that many of the later books lack. It balanced dogs with a fairly well worked mystery that was interesting. Sure I'd wish Conant would work on some of her flaws, which seem to get creakier with each book, as if she is either churning them out so fast she doesn't have time to practice any workmanship of writing, or as if she doesn't much care about this series anymore. But I still find this enjoyable enough to reread, and I would buy it again.

2 out of 5 stars Get the facts straight...........2004-10-22

I read this book (and for the most part enjoyed it), was facinated with her description of how she first crossed paths w/ the godfather, so went back and read that book ("Bloodlines"). Unfortunately, what she describes in "Dogfather" didn't take place in "Bloodlines". She states that she and the godfather first crossed paths when Holly helped close down a puppy mill (one of my crusading passions, which also led me to read "Bloodlines") yet in reading it, one sees that Holly did everything behind the scenes. She never once was associated with the raid on the puppy mill; she did her rescuing under cover and the raiding authorities didn't even know she was on the premesis. So how could the godfather even know about her if no one knew of her involvement? If authors depend upon us, the readers, to purchase their wares, the least they can do is give us credit for knowing their story lines and characters as well as (or even better) than they do.

And I'd be surprised if Ms. Conant hasn't heard from the Italian Anit-Defamation League. I was shocked to read such slurs coming from a Cambridge resident...!

P.S. As an avid cat lover, I'm horrified that Holly hasn't found a good home for that poor cat, Tracker. And Steve, as the outstanding vet that he supposedly is, should speak up for the poor cat too. I guess in some parts of this literary world, cats are just second class citizens....

4 out of 5 stars Holly, Holly, Holly.......2004-07-01

I didn't think this was the best in the Dog Lovers Series but it kept my attention. As always, I learned a thing or two about dog traing/showing from Holly, Rowdy, and Kimi but the story was somewhat predictable. The "mobsters" were typical loud, flashy Italian folks with bling bling that get whatever they want. As for Holly and Steve, we knew they were going to get back together before he was even divorced. And of course the "dust mop with teeth's" owner was going to work her way into the plot because she kept showing up outside Holly's house. The book ended by tying up the lose ends but wasn't very clear about the car explosion. I hope Holly gets her spunk, intelligence, and Steve back in the next book.

2 out of 5 stars Wise Up, Holly.......2004-01-30

Holly Winter, the heroine of this series, has always been tough and funny. Lately, Holly's become more irritating than tough and the humor in the books has diminished. "The Dogfather" is a fun weekend or evening read but definitely not up to Ms. Conant's usual level. In this installment, Holly becomes an unwilling "Dog Trainer to the Mob", making her way through a stereotypically east-coast Italian group of wiseguys, afraid of boss Enzio and his underworld underlings. In the course of the story, our strong Holly, usually so able to take care of herself, is reduced to watching as her career is jeopardized and her car destroyed. She doesn't trust the FBI; won't tell her friend, police officer Kevin; and puts friends and neighbors in harm's way. All in all, one wonders if she is still suffering the effects of the head injury she sustained in a previous book. The ending is untidy, as an item mentioned briefly in the course of the story becomes an unrealistic motive. And sadly, the Steve & Holly storyline is limping along. Ms. Conant's efforts to keep the two apart, in a misunderstanding about flowers, is straight out of a crummy romance novel. Holly badly needs to give that poor guy a break, before everyone loses patience. In their treatment of Steve, Holly and Steve's soon-to-be ex-wife are actually similarly thoughtless and unkind. Perhaps Rita, Holly's tenant/therapist, should point this out to Holly so that we don't lose what was one of the best relationships in this series. Finally, it is time Ms. Winter finds a loving home for her cat and admits that she hasn't got what it takes to be a cat-owner. Smart about dogs, sadly ignorant of the possibilities of feline friendship.

This book is loaded with practical advice if your wife or loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer. While containing medical information on breast cancer and treatments, it goes beyond that to provide a number of useful suggestions for helping her through a very difficult period. Furthermore, it provides a number of useful suggestions for helping YOURSELF as the supporting partner on this journey.

I found it very useful and recommend it without reservation.

A must read for anyone close to the "survivor". Everything so far has been "right on". Sure helps reduce the "unknown" fears. Husband has read; sister has read; and brother-in-law (me) has read and gained from the knowledge and experience conveyed by the author who we wish to thank.

You'll need this advice one way or another. There are some topics you may not want to deal with, but trust me, you WILL deal with them. Your wife's cancer diagnosis doesn't come with a manual...this book is a great start. (Even though you wish you weren't reading it...once the dust settles...you'll be thankful for it.)

5 out of 5 stars Essential if you have breast cancer.......2006-11-30

Poeple who've had a breast scare (or the full thing) will find this book invaluable. Even if it turns out you don't need treatment, you still need support, and that's what this book explains. Really good.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for survivors, but not everyone survives........2006-09-04

Silver's book is a helpful journalistic guidebook for spouses and partners of breast cancer victims; Part I is made up of 8 chapters and Part 2, 13 chapters. In the forward, Dr. Frederick P. Smith writes, "the support of a spouse can make a significant difference to the patient."

There is one chapter for those of us whose partners didn't make it: "Facing Death."

The period between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2000 is the time that we all faced my wife's death. I didn't know what to do. I called a local hospice and they helped us the last couple of days, advice Silver offers on p. 262-263. There are other points that Silver makes that ring true as well.

I cannot bring back my wife Bahjeh so I do "breast cancer work."

The year after my wife died, I began to talk with the clinic where my wife had been a patient about a project for my students. That went nowhere after I could not find an appropriate assignment; there were already plenty of how-to guides for women.

I use breast cancer stamps on my letters. I support breast cancer fundraisers. I click for mammograms at [...]. I advise my women friends to do self-exams and get mammograms. I mention to my students that they need to pay attention to their health. I make the point that early detection is crucial. I have recently started working on an academic article with a colleague who has breast cancer.

What does any of this accomplish? It's hard to tell.

I cannot go back to that initial incorrect diagnosis in 1985 and shake the doctor and tell him "That might be cancer. We need detailed tests right away." At the time I should have been more suspicious, but we seemed young and healthy with two young sons.

Reading Silver's book will not prevent what happened to my family, but it certainly contains some useful advice for the spouses of survivors.

              Book Description

As he left for work on a very cold morning in 1991, TV reporter Dick Wolfsie nearly tripped over a tiny beagle on his front step. He invited the little stray into his home and left for work only to return eight hours later to a shredded couch, a well-gnawed pair of heels, mangled curtains and a damp rug. Dick's wife issued an ultimatum: "The dog must go. Either that or you have to take him to work with you." And so a star was born. When Barney died in 2003, Dick received an outpouring of sympathy and condolences often reserved for heads of state. In BARNEY: The Stray Beagle Who Became a TV Star and Stole Our Hearts, Dick Wolfsie lovingly recalls the greatest Barney moments.

For more than 12 years, Barney the beagle was the most celebrated dog in Indiana. With his faithful human sidekick, Dick Wolfsie, Barney made 3000 television appearances, 14 commercials, hosted his own late-night movie review show and even had a line of Barney boxer shorts. He visited hospitals, retirement homes and schools, and local restaurants named sandwiches and drinks after him. Whether on television or in person, Barney brought joy to people's hearts wherever he went.

5 out of 5 stars A Heartwarming remembrance and tribute to Barney........2004-09-14

If you lived in Central Indiana from the mid-90s to 2003 you probably saw Barney - Dick Wolfsie's canine sidekick and faithful companion for literally thousands of segments of the WISH-TV morning show. He wasn't a prop or a gag (he was too poorly trained for that) - he was his own man (!) on the show. He was goodwill ambassador and class clown and all beagle.

This is a light-hearted book - full of Wolfsie's wonderful memories - the good and the bad. Really, it's a fluff piece - but this piece of fluff caused my eyes to tear up more than once as he spoke of the day his beloved Barney died and the immediate outpouring of love and concern that central Indiana expressed.

Truly a wonderful little book - be prepared to laugh (my wife and I read parts of it to each other and enjoyed it all the more) but also have the tissues handy!

5 out of 5 stars Indiana, WISH-TV 8 and Barney; something truly Hoosier........2004-07-25

For those of us that grew up watching WISH-TV in the mornings, noon, evening and late night, we never can get enough. When you say WISH-TV, you think of two things: Mike Ahern and Barney. Two legends that will hardly be forgotten. For this book, it reminds of Barney, and all of the times we watched him on television and growing up with him as well. It explains his days of eating the world whole, which he did often, his love for children, and the man that could never love him enough, Dick Wolfsie. Reading this book gives you such a frog in your throat, you wish Barney never passed and that your children and grandchildren could see Barney forever. But we knew it had to happen, we just did not want to think it. While the rest of the country thinks of a purple dinosaur when you say Barney, we think of a dog, a friend that felt like he was our own, and this book reminded you of that fact. He was not only Mr. Wolfsie's best friend, but ours too. We thank you for the book Dick, and will greatly miss 'our' best friend. Thanks for the memories.

              5 out of 5 stars First Class Book . . . .......2005-03-06

If you like browsing through excellent photos of vintage jewelry and seeing a sampling of old jewelry ads, this book is for you. I find the quality is first class for paper, photography and binding. This would make a good 'coffee table' book.

Although containing no index for its 205 pages, the book does have a table of contents and is broken down in sections by designer. So, if you have an interest in fashion jewelry, but not a particular design or substance, you can easily read the names and histories of those who brought costume jewelry to its glamourous height, along with viewing the pictures of jewelry by that particular designer in their own appropriate chapter.

I like looking through the pages on a lonely winter night.

1 out of 5 stars Costume Jewelers: The Golden Age of Design.......2000-08-04

Joanne's book is not exactly a research project, designed for someone who wants to know about costume jewelry designers, even though the book's title might think lead you to think that.

Joanne is a collector and dealer of costume jewelry. This book is almost exclusively a catalog of her personal collection. She includes a price list for the items pictured.

A very brief explanation accompanies the photographs, usually little more than an identification of the manufacturer. There is no index and a too-brief bibliography.

Better books on costume jewelry are out there. For instance, try Vivienne Becker's Fabulous Costume Jewelry : History of Fantasy and Fashion in Jewels (1997).

4 out of 5 stars A lovely sampling of many vintage designers.......1999-04-10

Ms. Ball presents interesting and insightful information about the periods, styles and signatures and the lives of the vintage jewelry designers. It's exciting to learn the history surrounding the artists of the 19th and earlier 20th centuries, while comparing things passed down from our families' generations.

                  Book Description

Finding an array of unique and diverse plants for shade might seem like a daunting task, with limited options available to the gardener. Shade perennial expert W. George Schmid dispels this perception in his new encyclopedia. This companionable reference provides information on more than 7000 species and cultivars in 184 genera, from Acanthus to Woodwardia — some new to horticulture, others unjustly overlooked, but all beautifully suited to the shade garden.

Schmid has behind him a half century of practical gardening experience, horticultural education, and extensive travel observing shade perennials in their native habitats; readers are therefore treated to both useful growing tips and his personal associations with the plants. The expert text is rounded out with 500 stunning color photographs, many taken by the author himself.

                  5 out of 5 stars I Thank Toos God, for Geroge's book!!!.......2006-08-18

In this volume Schmid has unselfishly shared his most intimate feeling and knowledge about the art of gardening. He has put a life time of intense gardening knowledge between the covers of this wonderful book. Every page is filled with gardening insights, understanding and details. Yes I paid for it, but it is so dam well written that, I can only consider as to have been some kind of a gift. It is much more then encyclopedia or a how to book, sure he gives a lot of how tos, but now you can know, why tos as well. A profession writer could easily make five or even ten books out of this one, just by adding some random garden minutia, but Geroge is not in to making a fast book(buck) he is into gardening. Now I can be an artful gardener toos :)

5 out of 5 stars TRULY IS an ENCYCLOPEDIA!.......2006-04-27

From the man who is the original expert on the subject, a fantastic resource for all who garden in the shade. Very user friendly with seven thousand species and cultivars, useful to the novice as well as the expert. Thankfully the shade craze caught on perhaps with the publication of Schmid's first book, "The Genus Hosta." The book starts with practical tips on the "bones of the garden" trees and soil and covers briefly many other subjects before getting into the plants that are appropriate for shade. I own many books on shade gardening, including books devoted exclusively to the subjects of ferns, ivies, mosses, etc. I find that this is the book that I keep right there with my other two favorites, Dirr's on trees and of course "The Genus Hosta".

                  5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2004-07-03

Although I've been a shade gardener for many years, this book contains many shade perennials that I had never heard of. I liked that almost all the pictures appear to be of mature specimens, so you can see what the plant will look like. (My pet peeve is when gardening books show baby plants! What good is that?) There are sometimes many pictures of one plant: one picture will show a close-up of the flower, one picture will be a distance picture. The descriptions tell growing information, zone, size, and possible gardening problems. I was pleased with this book and am glad that I purchased it. I have been barely able to put it down, even though I have read several other shade gardening books. Thank you, Mr. Schmid, for a fantastic, wonderful resource. I enthusiastically recommend this book to any shade gardener.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Shade.......2004-02-29

I am still reading this book. There are many words of wisdom and there is a lot to digest. This book will be used often. It may not have an answer for all shade problems but it gives great information for what to do in the ground layer of a shady garden. The plant descriptions are detailed and the cultural information is extensive and complete. Add to that colf hardiness and heat tolerance as well as propagation, diseases, and anything else you must know, this volume give the nitty-gritty on many shade perennials, herbaceous as well as evergreen. This is a good book for starting and experienced gardeners. The starters may have to take time to get to know how to use the book. The photos are outstanding, albeit gathered in a bunch in the center sections, but bold printed names point to the illustrations. I'll use this book often and enjoy the many stories presented along with the plant information.

5 out of 5 stars made for the shade.......2004-02-01

This includes all of the classics, a bunch of new herbaceous shade perennials, many, many wildflowers, and hundreds of ferns, both old and new for the shady garden.
It covers herbaceous perennials only, as the title implies, but there are thousands of them. A few are missing, but that is a good thing. They are weedy and shouldn't be planted anyway.
I liked the personal stories and connection of the author with each of the genera, and the attention paid to culture, diseases, propagation and heat and cold hardiness.
As in any encyclopedia, the plants are arranged by genus name and within the genus by species and cultivar names, alphabetically. For the plants illustrated in color, the names are in bold letters. You must know the Latin names of plants, but a huge index lists all of common names and tells you what the Latin name for it is. It also gives cross references for synonyms, different scientific names that have been given to the same plant. It takes a while to get the gist of it, but it is worth the time.
A book that will give great shade gardening information for many years to come. It should be in every serious shade gardeners library.

I am thrilled with this book. I am highlighting the ones in my garden and several of my family and friends are using their own colors to highlight their hostas. What a nice record of our gardens. I'm glad I found the book. And I got it in only two days!

4 out of 5 stars an informative work but not an encyclopedia .......2007-07-23

The author makes a concerted effort to bring to you the vast numbers of hostas available today in a concise way. The book is designed to assist you in finding the hosta that best suites your needs. It does not meet the definition of an Encyclopedia, the species and cultivars are not arranged alphabetically, however in alphabetical order by the way they look, an informative work but not an encyclopedia. So the name of the book is yet another marketing ploy. For me, I can only use the book by way of index. It does have some information that's hard to find elsewhere. They make a darn good hit at getting info on some of the best hostas available and some that are barely available. It is not a five star book but it is a solid four star. The pictures woo the ladies but men want content, we know that a hosta may only look that way for one week in spring.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictorial Reference.......2007-07-09

My husband and I love to collect hostas and although we have numerous varities, over the years we have failed to keep a record of the name and genus of the individual hosta. We decided to purchase this colorful book as a reference to help us know just what we have and the location where it is located. We plan to do a better job labeling our purchases and this book has already proved to be extremely helpful giving us the necessary info to identify our hosta. The book also contains information regarting growing requirements.

We feel it was a great purchase at a great low Amazon price! We highly recommend it.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-07-03

Very informative, wonderful pictures, very useful when planning for the purchase or layout of a hosta garden! I'm very fortunate that there is a botannical garden/large hosta collection in my area that sells hundreds of different hosta varieties. With their price lists and this delightful book, I've been able to do my homework first, then go shopping and have created quite the diverse hosta/shade garden, with unique specimins not found at most run of the mill retailers. Again, this is a great book!

                    Book Description

This volume examines the role of the Cambridge Platonist, Henry More, in discrediting certain religious and philosophical movements of the seventeenth century by branding them as "enthusiastical" (the result of psychological imbalance issuing in impaired judgement and cognition). More's views are distinguished from his "enthusiastical" opponents -- Alchemists, Quakers, and Mechanical Philosophers -- by looking at the way in which he dialectically employs various speech genres to describe religious meaning and to evoke in his readers attitudes and feelings confirming that meaning. More is presented as offering a consistent ideal of the religiously meaningful life, protecting it from various forms of intellectual corruption. More's paradoxical ways of polemicizing are explained while at the same time the author provides insight into such diverse themes as the connection between Hermeticism, Cartesianism, and religious radicalism.

                      Book Description

You're a kid and you've just been assigned a research paper. A snap, right? Just jump on the Internet, snag a couple of sites, print out everything you find, copy some more stuff, organize a bit, add a title, print out your paper, and you're finished or so many kids think.

Alas, it's not quite that easy. Learning how to search for and verify sources, as well as organize, analyze, and take electronic notes is just the beginning. Citing sources and avoiding plagiarism is a must. And thinking, writing, editing, and coming up with the best format for your project - which just might be in some other form besides printed on paper - -is more of an art today than it has ever been in the long (but perhaps not always illustrious) history of homework.

So how can kids learn these research techniques with a technology twist? The first step is taking apart the process of producing a paper (or perhaps even a "paperless paper") and discussing and analyzing what works when a computer is involved. There are lots of books and pamphlets on how to write a research paper, but until now none have truly focused on how a computer can become a helpmate at every stage in the process.

Introducing Writing A Paperless Paper: A Student Guide to Electronic Study Skills by James G. Lengel, a professor at the College of Communication at Boston University. This 24-page booklet introduces, outlines, and explains in clear and simple terms a ten-step process for creating a research project in which the computer helps students plan, organize, research, take electronic notes, keep track of citations, brainstorm, write, edit and ultimately "publish" a paper. It isn't just a guide to good Internet sites for homework assignments or a research guide that fails to show how helpful the computer can really be (such as those that instruct kids to copy information off the computer onto note cards only to type it back in later). From the supplier: Many new publishers without extensive funding are starting magazines on the World Wide Web, gambling that the low start-up costs will offset novel revenue problems. Feed magazine, six months old, has spent only $100,000, much of that for luring established writers. Its unique ad-pricing scheme charges advertisers according to how many times their ad is seen. Word magazine, whose start-up cost $750,000, has already lined up several major advertisers. Salon arranged a special trade with the Borders bookstore chain.

                                        Book Description

Picking up from "Apprentice in Budapest", the first volume of Raphael Patai's autobiography, "Journeyman in Jerusalem" presents the fascinating journey of a young scholar struggling to make his way in the midst of often trying circumstances while a nation-in-the-making struggles to establish itself. The book covers fifteen years--1933 to 1947--during which the Yishuv, the Jewish community of Palestine, experienced one of the most turbulent periods of its history. This volume is an invaluable record of this era and of the early life of its author, who was to become one of the most respected Jewish scholars of the twentieth century.
