Book Description
Etienne Makepeace, England's celebrated "Tea Sage," vanished without a trace in 1966, leaving the whole of Great Britain wondering what became of the famed radio personality. Forty years later his hastily buried remains are discovered beneath two sickly Assam tea bushes in the Royal Tunbridge Wells Tea Museum's tea garden-along with the pistol that killed him. Nigel Owens, curator, and Flick Adams, tea chemist, are thus embroiled in the second mystery to threaten the integrity of the museum. Are they in over their heads this time?

A Much Improved Sequel.......2007-09-03
I recently read Dead as a Scone, the first book in this series, and I wasn't overly impressed. However, this book was much better written and I found that it didn't have the same flaws as the first book. It kept my interest throughout and the historical parts of the book were implemented into the story instead of being a break from the rest of the book. The mystery was captivating and it was thoroughly enjoyed.
The one problem I had with the book was the fact that there was a short "Christian" section in the middle and vague references throughout but it didn't really tie into the story. I don't appreciate authors throwing Christian content into books just to market it to a specific audience and that is what this felt like. It didn't turn me off of the book or story I just felt that it could have been written differently. If it had tied into the story better I would have no problem with it. As it was, the content felt as if it was added into the story and didn't feel natural to the book or the characters.
Otherwise, this was a great cozy and I liked it very much. Now I'm off to find some tea and scones as the many references to such in the book has made me long for an English tea!
The final Crumpet.......2006-07-31
It was enjoyable. I look forward to the next one in the series.
Great mystery but has some moments!!.......2006-05-23
I've read both "Dead as a Scone" and "The Final Crumpet". Both were very entertaining mysteries with satisfying endings that make sense. It is neat to see Flick muddle her way through the different culture and how English is spoken in England rather than here. ( a torch is flashlight, etc). The passages on tea are very educational and the book reads fast.
The only strange thing is that in the middle of "The Final Crumpet" both characters and a supporting one (Polly) start talking about their religious beliefs (Jesus is something like a dustbin--I know that's not the actual quote but something akin to it). I really like some analogies and thoughts about their faith but it seemed the authors threw those paragraphs in there to add some Christian basis to the novels. There was no preliminary buildup--it happened in the middle of muddling in the mystery. The first book had a reason why the Bible was quoted that was vital to the mystery but this book, though very good, had spots of Christianity thrown it as if an afterthought and it was somewhat distracting. If the authors can manage to weave in the character's faith throughout the book, it would be fantastic and add a whole new dimension and depth to the entire mystery.
A Top Notch Cozy!.......2005-12-16
"The Final Crumpet" is the second offering in the marvelous "Royal Tunbridge Wells Mystery" series written by Ron and Janet Benrey. Once again, the Benreys allow us to share the adventures of Nigel Owens and Flick Adams, the director and the curator of the Royal Tunbridge Wells Tea Museum in Tunbridge Wells, England.
While tending to some rather sick Assam bushes in the museum's garden, a body is uncovered. It turns out to be the remains of Britain's noted "Tea Sage," Etienne Makepeace, missing for forty years. When news gets out that the famous tea expert has been found, the media descend like locusts upon the hapless museum staff. As Nigel and Flick try valiantly to handle the situation, the bank that funds the museum threatens to withdraw their support, appalled by the unwelcome notoriety. Nigel and Flick, who are falling in love, must discover just how Makepeace found his way into their garden. It is clear that solving the mystery might be their only chance to save the museum. But the secrets that may have led to the tea expert's early demise are not the love struck pair's only problem. They each house their own deeply held secrets. The real mystery lies not only in the truth about Etienne Makepeace but in the ability of the wily sleuths to handle the truth about each other.
Written in a style reminiscent of Agatha Christie, this cozy is a mystery lover's delight. Nigel's British sensibilities create the perfect foil for his American partner's lovable spontaneity. "The Final Crumpet" is a novel that requires a cozy fire, a comfy chair, and a delicious cuppa. It is highly recommended.
Great new series!.......2005-11-03
This was the first book I read by these authors and I was so thrilled with it! I love both cozy mysteries and christian fiction and this book is both. The characters are wonderful, believeable and make you want to reach out and hug them. I read this entire book in one day, I just couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read more by these delightful authors!

Spiders, supernatural powers, and fully rounded characters?.......2004-09-29
What more do you want? Van Pelt's first book is a keeper. In this very good collection, we are introduced to seventeen of Van Pelt's stories. The majority of these stories connect immediately and won't let go of the reader's interest until the end. (Like "Nor a Lender Be" or "The Yard God".) Granted, some are relative flops ("Parallel Highways"), but there are no really bad stories in this collection. Most of them have a strange dual sense of originality and familiarity, almost like returning to a childhood home after many years. His stories are also very difficult to pin down into any one genre, which I think is a very good thing. If anything, it provokes discussion.
With this book, and hopefully another on the way, Van Pelt seems to be breaking into book markets and some of the more "mainstream" short SF publishers, like Asimov's and Analog. I'm very impressed with Van Pelt's work, and look forward to any more work that he may produce.
I hope there's a second volume..........2003-04-22
Simply put, "Strangers and Beggars" is one of the best short story collections I've ever read.
Sixteen of the seventeen stories kept me riveted from start to finish. Though the stories cover a wide variety of themes, settings, and characters, they share a solid foundation of Mr. Van Pelt's great writing and vivid imagination. If you enjoy the book even half as much as I did, you'll have gotten more than your money's worth.
Writer in the classroom.......2003-04-02
Jim is a friend. While he was collecting the short stories for Strangers and Beggars he withdrew one. Not right for this collection. This collection might be used in a classroom and as a teacher Jim knew that the withdrawn story was not right for a classroom.
Great decision. I can share each and every one of his tales and keep the young reader's interest. The book is on the American Library Association's Best Books for Young Adults.
You know these people..........2002-09-24
Short stories are snapshots. Snapshots often reveal a truth that a formal photograph cannot. The seventeen snapshots in this collection are divided into sections (Teaching, Love, Death, Time) but they all feature the same thing: touching characters in extraordinary and true circumstances.
No matter how odd the situation, the reader can connect with the character; under the nonsensical lies plain truths we can all understand. Don't fit into your surroundings? Don't despair; neither do many of the people you'll meet in these stories.
Take Miss Hathaway. She has a problem with a spider in her classroom and when she's directed to take care of it herself, she does, but in an altogether unexpected manner. Demi has the ability to sense the life-force of insects, but even better, she can channel that energy. Yet, nothing ever goes how one expects it to--good for readers, heartbreaking for Demi.
The death dwarves have even bigger problems. They're just trying to do their job, which is to bring death to the masses. Our Intrepid Hero John Minor gets in the way. What's he thinking? Another man trying to do his job is Pierce. That job involves recording the voices of the past. He's recording something he shouldn't be, and just can't stop himself.
Ever have a neighbor who doesn't want to adhere to the covenants of the community? You're already familiar with Gary then, who seems determined to paint his house black. Owen doesn't like this at all, though his wife keeps going over there...
Have you ever sacrificed something near and dear for love? Ever dared to speak forbidden words? Relied on a sixth sense during a baseball game? Have you crouched atop your desk at work while sharks circle? Of course you have.
Which means you'll relate to the people in these stories. You'll understand their dilemmas, their heartbreak, their fear.
And that makes this collection a treasure. It's science fiction and it's fantasy, but at its heart, it's truth.
Do you like Stephen King?.......2002-09-19
Then you'll like James Van Pelt's "Strangers and Beggars." The stories here cover fantasy and science fiction with an emphasis on fantasy in the modern world. They are at once thought provoking and entertaining. Van Pelt is a name to watch for.

Customer Reviews:
Another Classic from the Dean of Science Fiction Writers.......2007-09-26
Robert A Heinlein was not called the "Dean of Science Fiction Writers" for nothing: like most (if not all) of his other books, in "Citizen of the Galaxy" he takes a concept - in this case slavery: deconstructs and analyzes it in many different ways, and presents his thoughts on each aspect of it to us in the context of a compelling and entertaining story.
The story centers on Thorby: a boy perhaps in his early teens, and of unknown parentage, who enters the story as a rebellious and angry young slave on the auction block. We follow his life through several major transitions as he is bought, then educated and finally freed by "Baslim the Cripple", a beggar with mysterious and very un-beggar-like qualities; through his escape from Baslim's murderers to live with the galaxy-roving "Free Traders". Then, after a brief stint in the military, he returns to Earth where he learns of his own origins and heritage, and eventually how and perhaps why he was sold into slavery. He also learns who Baslim really was, and finally takes on what he learns was Baslim's true mission as his own.
To me, like most of his books, one of the most interesting aspects of this story is how Heinlein illustrates and expands upon his central theme in so many different ways: At first we see Thorby in the role of a classic slave, with a master - Baslim, but with a twist, as Baslim is a man who bought Thorby purely because he detests slavery - and teaches Thorby that what makes a man free is his mind, not whether another claims to own and control his body in a physical sense.
Then, when Thorby finds his way to the Free Traders, we see a society that claims to be freer than any other in history - which is true in that they roam the entire galaxy at will - going where they want, when they want, without constraint. But, their life-long and crowded existence onboard their spaceships has created a society where tradition, familial, and social constraints limit them in ways more profound and limiting then Thorby had ever experienced before.
When he finally returns to Earth, Thorby finds that his place is at the pinnacle of power, wealth and fame - yet his wealth and power present new challenges: constraining his freedom in new and even more difficult to challenge ways.
In each of these situations, we see how Thorby uses the talents, skills and freedom he finds within himself, which Baslim had nurtured and trained, to overcome the challenges he is faced with: we also see how those around him are enslaved in ways both more subtle and more profound than Thorby had been when he had been "owned" by Baslim.
Heinlein presents slavery as a great evil that must be conquered and eliminated, and as a societal disease that can and will take root and flourish in many ways, in almost any society. He also shows us that slavery is less about the physical constraints and more about the enslavement of one's mind and spirit.
Through the experiences of Thorby, Heinlein shows us that true freedom exists only when a person is able to free their mind and rise above the shackles and constraints their day to day existence places upon them. That slavery is not just about the physical enslavement and exploitation of one person by another, but about enslavement of the mind and spirit.
As a teen, I did not find this particular book as appealing as I did most of the other works of young adult fiction written by Heinlein in the 1950's, such as "Between Planets", "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", and "The Rolling Stones". Yet, now that I have re-read "Citizen of the Galaxy" as an adult, I find it to be a more mature, richer, thoughtful, subtle and thought-provoking work than many of his earlier work: I highly recommend it.
Lot Number Ninety-Seven...........2007-08-19
"Citizen of the Galaxy" is another fine edition to Robert A. Heinlein's series of `juveniles' he wrote for Charles Scribners Sons primarily in the 1950s.
We never find out what motivated the beggar, Baslim the Cripple, to buy the slave boy Thorby. In this distant future, mankind has spread out among the stars. The Nine Worlds do not even acknowledge any relationship to Earth and are not members of the Terran Hegemony.
Anyway on this frontier world, there exists the institution of slavery.
One thing becomes immediately apparent, Baslim is a lot more than a beggar. As their father/son develops, it is obvious Baslim is highly educated with a wide range of skills. It is also obvious, he is some sort of spy. Thorby doesn't care. Pops business was Pops business. Baslim raises and home schools his son.
Things come to a head years later when Baslim is found to be a spy. Thorby must flee for his life. However Baslim has foreseen this day and has prepared Thorby. Thorby is smuggled offworld and begins his quest for his true identity and completion of Baslim's mission.
The central theme of this book is the variation in human culture and the adaptability of man. Each group Thorby finds himself has it's own rituals and customs. Our hero is constantly required change, adapt and in the process grow as a man.
They don't write 'em like this anymore.......2007-07-17
Heinlein was a master of the noncondescending juvenile SF novel, and this is, in my informed opinion, the very best of the dozen or so he wrote during the 1950s. In fact, it's one of his two or three best novels, period. Thorby starts out a slave, purchased on a distant world by an old beggar (who, of course, is more than he seems) and becomes intimate with the underworld -- then finds himself aboard a Free Trader vessel with an extremely complex social structure, where he's adopted in and makes a new life for himself -- then finds himself a very junior enlisted man on a "space patrol" ship, where he makes another new life -- then finds himself the long-lost heir to an enormous fortune back on Earth, where the various plotlines come together and (yes) he has to try to make a new life for himself. Thorby is nothing if not adaptable. The narrative is straightforward, moving along at a nice pace, and there's very little of the overwritten preachifying RAH was prone to in his later work. The characters are based on `50s archetypes, so today's kids will undoubtedly be amused by the state of gender relations, and they've probably never seen a slide rule, but, hey -- read and enjoy.
Classic Outworlds Adventure .......2007-06-08
Citizen of the Galaxy is a very good classic science fiction work. It is the third Heinlein novel which I have finished. While it is in Heinlein's juvenile stories, the novel is a great adventure saga. I enjoyed following the main character Thorby through his life education and experiences. Unfortunately, the ending comes much too quickly and in too "neat" of a 1950's manner. It is suitable for readers spanning ages 11 to decades beyond.
Moieties, Pirates and Begging, Oh My!.......2007-03-09
One has to read Citizen of the Galaxy to understand the development of Heinlein's cultural themes and of his fascination with various forms of kinship and marriage as well as other aspects of social structure. Your first clue is that the anthropologist aboard the Sisu is named Margaret Mader.
Heinlein also takes on slavery in this book. And white collar crime. Plus there is a rapscallionesque lawyer who describes himself as "middlin honest". Coupled with a charming protagonist, ethical mentors and the Space Navy, all the elements of a great Heinlein adventure come together in Citizen of the Galaxy.
"Good Business".

There's more to yoga than stretching and bending and twisting. In Yoga for Wellness, one of America's top yoga teachers gives a clinic on the holistic nature of yoga practice, especially in regard to healing and well-being. With over a thousand photographs, Gary Kraftsow covers the basic postures, the specific movements of each posture, and how to sequence postures in a routine. More importantly, he moves from form to function, showing how sequences of postures can alleviate ailments in each system of the body, from lower back pain to hypertension--even depression and multiple sclerosis. In case studies of his own clients, we see how Kraftsow's holistic approach has him recommending not only posture prescriptions, but breathing exercises, sound techniques, and visualizations, not to mention such commonly neglected wisdom as eating a healthy breakfast and getting closer to nature. Yoga for Wellness is the rare yoga instruction manual that teaches the basics of yoga while also paying more than just lip service to the original intention of yoga--achieving a balance of mental, physical, and spiritual wellness. --Brian Bruya

The best for healing.......2006-08-07
I've purchased many copies of this book for friends who are involved with healing. It provides the yoga poses and complete yoga sequences for each needed type of healing. Presentation is clear and complete. And, even better, there is an excellent index.
Useful for healing different problems.......2006-05-17
This book kept me from having surgery. I tore 2 knee ligaments skiing. I'm not into surgery, so I did the knee yoga practice from this book for a few weeks; then had an MRI. The ligaments were completely torn but my knee was functional and didn't hurt. The orthopedic doctor was so impressed...he said he had never seen a torn knee that was so functional before. He sent me to PT for a few more weeks, and I was fine.
I've also used the practices in the book for different digestive disorders & I've had great results.
The back of the book is more about healing conditions, the front is more about moving in different directions.
This book is perfect for Yoga students and Teachers........2006-02-09
I read this book as part of Teacher's Training course for Yoga. I found this book to be very informative. It gives you detailed instructions and Yoga positions that will help with different ailments and diseases. Also learning the bone structures and parts of the body was helpful, while studying Teachers Training for Yoga. I liked this book very much. I also thought Gary Kraftsow's writing was down to earth so that everyone can understand.
A very nice guide to yoga's benefits for physical health and overall wellness.......2005-11-05
I purchased this book because it seemed to contain information similar to another yoga manual, The Anatomy of Hatha Yoga, but with the information presented in a more down-to-earth, less scientific manner (The Anatomy of Hatha Yoga is excellent, just a bit above my head!). This book is neither strictly a reference tool nor a specific practice guide, yet author Kraftsow touches on both of these areas. He presents information mainly in the form of vignettes describing past clients with whom he has worked. After providing an overview of the anatomical issues involved in various types of posture groups, Kraftsow goes into therapeutic applications of yoga, covering complaints ranging from common aches and pains to physical diseases to emotional issues. He stresses the importance of customizing the prescribed yoga routine to each individual, but the wealth of information provided offers plenty of guidelines to allow readers to develop their own specialized practices. This book would also be very useful for yoga teachers looking for assistance in providing their students with individualized guidance, particularly with respect to wellness issues. Highly recommended work to anyone looking to enhance health and wellness through yoga.
If you can't trust the writer, don't buy the book.......2005-07-04
I bought this book when it first came out in 1999. Soon afterwards, I attended an expensive, 3-hour "workshop" taught by Mr. Kraftsow in Boston. I was quite excited to attend the workshop, as I was interested in learning more about his yoga practice, but found the book too poorly written to translate into practice.
Problem was, Mr. Kraftsow treated his workshop as just another book promotion opportunity and talked about himself and his book for more than 2.5 hours, leaving less than a half hour for actual yoga practice. Even worse, he insulted people from different geographic areas and suggested that many yoga practitioners were miserable because they didn't eat enough sugar!
When I got home from his workshop, I threw his book away. If an author is that untrustworthy, I don't want to follow his yoga either.

Dr. Spock for kitties.......2004-02-14
I picked up this book last year, and I studied it carefully before getting my first kitten, Ginny. The title doesn't lie, "Complete Kitten Care" is exactly what you get. The three-month old female I got last August is now a happy and healthy member of my family thanks to the advice from this book.
The topics covered here involve everything essential that a kitty novice needs to know, such as vet visits, spaying/neutering, adjusting to other pets, and grooming. The most important chapters that should not go unread are the sections that deal with medical emergencies (falls, drowning, and electrocution), and recognizing/treating sick kittens. I'm lucky enough not to have applied that information to my experiences with my kitten, but it's still good to know.
On the behavior front, "Complete Kitten Care" helps you understand your kitten's way of thinking and help you fix his mistakes, particularly litterbox-related mistakes. Also very helpful is the chapter on understanding body language, and how your kitty communicates with you. I now understand all of Ginny's moods by the size of her pupils, volume and pitch of her meow, position of her ears, and how her tail is held.
This book doesn't go without any entertainment, though. There are lots of adorable kitten photos and drawings that will easily melt your heart. In the back of the book, it has cat legends and fun facts, and there are lists of cat-related web sites, magazines, care organizations, pet supply sources, and other cat books.
Highly reccomended! A+
Complete Kitten Care Is Right.......2003-07-15
I've fostered dozens of kittens in the last ten years and made just about every mistake there is to make. Now that I have this book, I'll never take on another little one without having it at hand. All parts of this book are valuable to the new kitten owner, but I especially appreciate the sections on recognizing and treating health problems in young animals, and the section on emergencies is priceless. It tells you how to rescue your little one from a dog or other animal, how to administer artificial respiration if necessary, even perform acupuncture to jump start a stopped heart, how to give CPR to a drowned kitty, how to slow down shock, what to do if kitty ingests a poison plant, how to treat both heatstroke and hypothermia.
There's much else in the book, including learning to play with your kitty, understand her communications, and provide the kinds of toys and equipment that will suit her needs best. Complete Kitten Care is just what the title says it is. You probably shouldn't even think about acquiring a new kitten until you have a copy.
Besides presenting a wealth of knowledge, Shojai's book is fun to read. She has an obvious love of her subject, but it's tempered with good common sense and a great sense of humor. You can actually sit down and read this book through, rather than just thumbing to the section you need at any one time--it's that readable. She has a way of making the technical stuff understandable to us folks whose only qualification is that we love kitties.

A helpful, humorous book for new kitten owners........1999-02-20
My boyfriend and I recently fostered 7 orphaned 3 week old kittens. This book was invaluable! It talked about what to expect every week of the kittens life. When they were supposed to open their eyes, when they would start to play, what was normal and what needed attention. Also discusses their cognitive development. It was so clearly written and enjoyable, even humorous, that my boyfriend read it cover to cover and he's not a reader.
Book Description
A complete care guide for orphan kittens, including information on determining their ages, how to handle all basic care needs, and the supplies and materials needed. It also has in-depth information on normal growth stages, handling routine health problems, and how to determine what additional outside help might be needed. It even includes information on how and where to get additional, hands-on assistance in raising the kittens and suggestions on how to get them into good adoptive homes.

from a fellow foster kittie mom.......2006-04-18
I have now raised four litters of kittens from a week old to adoption. I can say that in many ways it is harder than raising my twin boys. You don't have the resources for kittens as with kids and they need three times the feeding and stimulation care that kids do!!! Now with this book I have the life line I need to take on another litter. Fostering kittens can be the most heartbreaking and wonderful job at the same time and with this book I will hopefully eliminate the "scary" parts associated with it. Sharon's book is like having a veterinarian at home with me at all times. I am telling everyone I know about this book. It is a must for raising kittens for your home or to adopt out.
Thank you Sharon for sharing your expertise and for making it so easy to read and understand. Please keep up the wonderful work. It is clear you have saved many lives in the past and your book is sure to save many more in the future. God Bless. (from a fellow kittie mom)

Customer Reviews:
Enchanted Journey.......2002-05-05
Cherish Me Always is a series of 4 books (3 have been published as of Spring 2002) that have grown out of the author's photograph collection. The photographs are shared in a graphic format that compliment the vintage photos. Poetry and literary quotes maintain the feeling of childhood storybook wonder. The child subjects of "Teddy Bears and Warm Fuzzies" are both girls and boys. Many of the toy companions shown are teddy bears, but not exclusively so. There are many identifiable and unidentifiable plush toys that do not seem to be teddy bears, but all of the plush animals seem to be loved and cherished by their child companions. This book is an enchanted journey back to the childhood days of bygone years.
Cherish Me Always - Teddy Bears- Fantastic Book!.......2001-12-13
This was a wonderful book! If you love history, children, photography, or teddy bears, you have to purchase this book! There is nothing on the market like this. The photographs pictured are so endearing! This makes a great gift book! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Book Description
With the same warmth, wisdom, wit, and accessibility that readers have come to love and trust in her monthly column, House & Garden editor in chief Dominique Browning offers this lively, charming, and instructive story of restoring a neglected suburban garden.
When a retaining wall in Browning's New York suburban garden collapsed, she was forced into action. Paths of Desire is the enchanting, amusing, and moving account of making a garden -- and confronting the essence of suburban gardening, with its idiosyncratic ecosystem. This meant struggling with depraved skunks and raccoons, marauding teenagers, plastic jungle gyms, toppling garbage cans, uncontrollable eyesores, potholed drives, and all the grinding, honking, and buzzing of the neighborhood.
Browning's delightfully frank prose conveys the very sense of being deep in a garden, with all its organic smells and textures, and the myriad joys of deciding what to plant and watching as the vision is realized. It contains a rich store of advice and illustrative anecdotes for enthusiasts and novices alike, as Browning amusingly documents the missteps she took in the planning of her garden and the satisfactions of finally getting it right. In Paths of Desire she teaches us how to embrace our plots of land -- no matter their size, beauty, or proximity to the city -- and make them our own. But she also reminds us that the life of a garden can never be separated from the people who wander in and out of it: characters like the charming but useless children; the philosophical tree doctor and the band of Helpful Men; the neighbors -- legalistic on one side, aesthetically challenged on the other -- and, best and worst of all, the True Love.
By the end of the book, Browning has transformed her garden -- and her life -- and has created a place of enchantment, which is most of all what a garden should be.
Customer Reviews:
Living with a garden in suburbia.......2007-06-23
This book had me from the start, when Dominique describes how an old retaining wall collapses in her yard, floods the area and destroys many of her shrubs and flowers. The ensuing work afterwards is this book, as she goes from grief over the collapse (which she compares to her divorce) to acceptance and then renewal (as with her boyfriend TrueLove). While she has the wall rebuilt, she reflects on incidents with her former husband and children in the house, and especially the garden, and how over the years she still holds on to all the memories, even as certain trees are diagnosed with deadly diseases.
This small garden, filled with raccoons, oppossums, birds and wayyward teens is the story of life in suburbia. Stubborn neighbors, messy neighbors, nosy neighbors and helpful neighbors are all part of the deal of living in suburbia. The trees and flowers are just flavorings. But then there are memories of the growing boys, former pets, old trees, dying trees, annoying rusty old vehicles from the neighbors, and menacing trees hanging over from the obstinate neighbors. What homeowner hasn't had to deal with any of this?
This book is a delight even for the non-gardener. It's a perfect gift for the avid gardener who's been tending to the same garden for many years.
Sorry but a little too cutesy for me...........2005-07-05
This is a true story about the author's life and landscaping a lovely homestead in Weschester Co., NY. Ms. Browning can turn a pretty phrase and she certainly did a lot with her property. I don't know...parts were just too precious: her boyfriend throughout is the True Love; yes, 230 pages of that. The contractors who did the actual work were the Helpful Men. A little on the condescending side, for my taste. On and on through many other cutesy titles and Capitalized Names...Oh Dear! Line drawings are very well done and highlight the text.
Inspiration for Suburban Transplants.......2005-04-25
As a recent transplant to suburbia and a novice gardener, I found comfort and inspiration in Browning's memoir. Her depictions of her garden-in-progress are fascinating. At times her garden seems enchanted, barely controllable, taking on a life of its own. (Especially that wisteria! I'm now warily eyeing my own twig of wisteria, which is sending out a few ominous shoots). Browning finds the extraordinary just steps away from her door. Passages about a simple pathway or a stand of trees are mesmerizing to read about. I was reminded of growing up in suburbia and finding wonder and mystery in yards that today -- or at least before reading "Paths of Desire" -- I might view as unremarkable. Browning has helped me rediscover some of that sense of wonder in the suburban landscape, and I no longer lament my retreat from the city. Her book has shown me how my own yard is a canvas filled with possibility, and yet to some degree it will always elude my control -- an idea that fascinates me even more.
Browning's prose style -- at times restrained, at other times lyrical, and often shot through with whimsy -- is as lovely as her garden.
I don't even garden.......2004-02-26
I had read a review of her book in the NYTimes and am a fan of the magazine she edits, so I bought the book. I fell in love with the story of collapse, confusion and renewal. Frankly the metaphor of the garden served as many a problem in one's own life. Wrap it all up in gorgeous prose and a compelling (yes! she makes a garden wall collapse and the ensuing drama exciting!) story and I had a book , I couldn't put down. Romantic and sometimes funny it's a good read for the gardener and non-gardener alike.
Charming.......2004-02-19
Sure, there's some great gardening advice in here, but mostly it's a charming story. The neighbors, the kids, the fix-it men, the romantic crush. I got sucked right in. You're bound to recognize your own plot of land, as well as your own suburban existence. And Dominique Browning is a gorgeous writer, with a great sense of humor. You don't need to know a thing about gardening to enjoy this terrific book.
