Book Description
The kidnapping was audacious,
and there were plenty of witnesses...
But no one attending the dazzling launch party for up-and-coming pop idol Tamar Valparaiso knew what they were seeing when, halfway through her performance, masked men whisked the sexy young singer off a luxury yacht and into a waiting speedboat. Now, the evening that was supposed to send Tamar's debut album, Bandersnatch, skyrocketing with a million-dollar promotional campaign has instead kicked off a terrifying countdown for Steve Carella and the detectives of the 87th Precinct. Time is their enemy in the race to find Tamar's abductors -- before the rising star is extinguished forever.
Download Description
"It should have been the night that launched a new pop idol. Tamar Valparaiso is young and beautiful, with the body and voice of an angel, and the stage is set for her to launch her debut album, Bandersnatch, on a luxury yacht in the heart of the city. But halfway through her performance, while the partygoers look on helplessly, masked men drag Tamar off the stage and into a waiting speedboat. Detective Steve Carella is just showing up for the graveyard shift when news of the kidnapping comes in. Working disjointedly with a Joint Task Force that calls itself ""The Squad,"" Carella and the men and women of the Eight-Seven must find Tamar before time -- or indeed her very life -- runs out. In this brilliant look at the music industry, Ed McBain once again combines his mastery of the form with the fast-paced dialogue and intricate plotting that have become his signature. "

A Disappointment.......2007-06-26
I hate giving low marks to an Ed McBain book, particularly an 87th Precinct novel, one of the most uniformly brilliant and long running series in history, but I guess any author has a low point now and then, and this is Ed McBain's.
First of all, McBain is a master of the insane but insanely logical motive. I will never forget the guy in Lightning who was raping women because he wanted to get them pregnant in order to rub their noses in the supposed hypocrisy of their anti-abortion point of view. But in The Frumious Bandersnatch both the motive and the villain are obvious very early in the book. Because this is so, much of the suspense is drained away, subsumed into the simple hope that the victim will be recovered alive. There are many pages of pointless dialogue (it's still good dialogue but I still wound up skipping pages) and the usual sub-plots in the series, those revolving around the lives of the cops in the 87th, are glossed over, except for that of Ollie Weeks and his blooming romance.
In the end, this was a depressing, as well as boring book. Let's hope the next one is better.
Disappointed.......2006-09-29
I was very disappointed with this book. There was too much useless dialogue that I think was used just to fill up space on the page. I have enjoyed his previous novels, but not this one. There were two characters that I have yet to figure out what roles they played in this book. I think the author just threw the whole thing together in a timely manner to satisfy his editor.
Like spending time with a good friend..........2006-07-10
A good friend of mine gave me a couple books as I was passing through New York a couple weeks back. One of them was Ed McBain's The Frumious Bandersnatch. I really like these 87th Precinct novels...
Tamar Valparaiso is the next hot pop sensation, and she's getting ready to perform her breakout hit from the album "Bandersnatch". It's on a yacht that's been chartered for a party, and there's a lot riding on this publicity event. And it definitely generates publicity, when two people board the boat and kidnap her at gunpoint in front of guests and news cameras. Carella and the 87th Precinct draw the call and start to go to work on solving the crime. But the FBI also wants a piece of it, and the inevitable turf war develops. Carella stays on the case when the record producer specifically requests his involvement. The ransom call comes in, and the $250,000 is packaged and delivered. But of course, things aren't always that simple, and things quickly spiral out of control when the next call comes from the kidnappers.
I'll admit that I sort of saw how the plot was going to turn out, but it still didn't detract from the enjoyment of the read. These novels are like "watching" a weekly crime series on network TV. Things get wrapped up in a fairly condensed period of time, and the personality of the characters flow from book to book. The subplot here is Ollie Weeks' budding romance with another cop of Hispanic descent. Watching him overcome his bigotry and still not have a clue as to what's going on never fails to amuse me. Too much like some people I know...
Fans of McBain and the 87th Precinct series will know what to expect here, and it'll be like spending a few hours with a good friend.
I am a huge fan of the 87th Precinct, but not of this book.......2006-01-16
McBain is an old fellow as you probably know. Here he tries to overcome this age barrier in some painful manifestations. He tries to relate to today's dating scene with his bumbling character Fat Ollie. But it comes across as an out of tune Doris Day/Rock Hudson cross with Miami Vice. It's hard to get across just how forced McBain's mindset is here. Another thing is McBain's attempt to ironically poke fun at today's pop music scene. The first third of the book is grotesque in its meaninglessness.
One thing really stuck out for me here. If you think back to the 87th Precinct glory days of say forty years ago, the characters meditated on esoteric questions while quickly but professionally figuring interesting crime scenes. Here, in Bandersnatch, the questions, the city, the subtle crimes are put aside and instead the book reads like a really bad script for an hour long CHIPS or Simon and Simon (bad tv shows of the 80's). The book starts silly and never regains its poise.
I don't know how the other reviewers could give this book such high marks. I know that this is an 87th precinct novel and its nice to pick up yet another one. But in comparison to some of the better ones in this series, I can only hand out a less than enthusiastic review.
Great Title, Great Book.......2005-12-02
Tamar Valparaiso is slated to be the next big pop star diva. That is, until she's kidnapped during a yacht party launching her new video and CD. Which brings the 87th into the mix, along with the Feebies, which Steve Carella doesn't like one bit. Fat Ollie is along for the ride, falling for a Puerto Rican cop. And he still hasn't found the transvestite that stole his beloved manuscript.
This was a fun read, and as always McBain did not disappoint with the jokes and quirky characters. Although, I felt a little cheated when he killed off a character I had begun to like.

Ingenious end to the Desert of Desolation trilogy.......2000-05-02
The Desert of Desolation trilogy concludes as the heroes find themselves desperately seeking the spirit of the ancient Martek, in hopes of deliverance from the wrath of the Vizier Efreet. Their quest takes them into one of the most ingenious dungeon settings ever devised - the Mobius Tower, where time literally stands still - an assassin's arrow hangs suspended inches from its target's breast, the torchlight glows solid, unmoving and cold, and only the ghosts still wander free... of course, that's until the chaos of distance and time distortion magic kicks in! An unforgettable classic for levels 7-9, highest recommendation.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for first time triathletes.......2007-05-31
If you have significant experience in any one of the sports, it may be of less use, but overall a very good basic resource. It has some training tables, offers insights into the difference between races with different lengths. I liked the explanation of triathlon rules and essential gear required.
Tri Prep.......2006-11-10
I found this book to be very informative. The workout suggestions have been helpful especially the swim drills. I highly recommend this book for the tri newby.
Triathlon 101.......2005-10-26
Excellent beginners books for those preparing to enter this sport. This book is just what i was looking for, given all the questions I had surrounding Triathlon training. The input given in the book on the equipment recommendations proved useful in pointing me in the right direction. A great buy.
Great introduction to Triathlon.......2004-10-17
This was the first book on Triathlon racing and training that I bought - several years ago. Its a well-written introduction to the sport and to training. An easy read, it covers all the basics - swim technique, biking mileage and the ever popular run.
I think any beginner should start with this book for the sections on nutrition, staying healthy and race preparation. Some of the best advice you can get - aside from fellow triathletes - is in this book about race day prep, things to know and do, etc.
skimpy on details.......2004-09-23
I really can't recommend this book. I'm training for my first triathlon so consider myself a newbie -- but this book did ~not~ gve me the info I need. Advice like "wear a helmet", "drink lots of fluids"... duh!!! - my 8 year old son knows that. The author recommends to get help elsewhere on swimming and cycling techniques because the details are beyond the scope of the book. I don't need a book for this kind of advice! I read another older book (can't remember the name at the moment) which gave good solid advice -- even for a newbie like myself. The mechanics of the freestyle stroke ~can~ be explained in simple terms by someone who understands and knows how to write. In short: too much filler, not enough meat. That said, it was not a total waste -- I was able to glean some facts obliquely referenced in the text.

Food, food, food.......2007-07-12
I bought this because I already owned the other cookbook put out by the Scotto family. I was hoping that this one contained some of the recipes I had hoped to find in the first one but, alas, they weren't in this one either. But instead there are plenty of other great recipes to try. And plenty more Italian history to learn by reading through this cookbook.
A history lesson in Italian cuisine.......2005-09-09
Very good, and I love the pictures they look authentic, especially nice to look at. Some of my Italian grandparents look just like that. There is some especially nice recipes I'm going to try. My family is excited about that. MANGIA, MANGIA, LOTS OF LOVE: CATHY ALEXANDER(NH)
Great Book! Great Place to eat!.......2004-01-23
After watching the Scotto family on FOOD TV, It was a must to buy the cookbook. The mouth-watering recipes are a delight! We decided to visit the posh FrescobyScotto restaurant after hearing the great reviews. YUMMY! The food was AWESOME! My boyfriend is Italian and usually critiques every Italian restaurant, but Scotto's restaurant by far is one of his favorites.
Disappointing.......2002-10-14
I was very, very disappointed in this book. The title is misleading in every way. If I had a kitchen staff of 15, these receipes would work. The receipes are time consumming and I did not find one receipe that was comforting. I saw this book advertised on Good Day NY and purchased the book immediately. I thought the biggest downfall was that there were no pictures of the foods. Presentation is very important and this book lacks it. I could of lived without the celebrity name dropping and would have loved pictures of the foods. I might of taken on the challenge of the time consuming receipes had I known seen a picture of it. There was one receipe I would have considered to prepare and then the book mentioned that it was Kathie Lee Gifford's favorite food. That ruined it right there.
THIS BOOK MAKES YOU HUNGRY.......2002-10-06
I TRIED A FEW OFTHE RECIPES AND I FELT LIKE I WAS ON VACATION IN ITALY. THEY WERE AUTHENTIC, EASY TO FOLLOW AND DELICIOUS! I ENJOYED THE PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE BOOK AND THE NON-COOKING STORIES WERE FUN TO READ! THIS BOOK COULD GO ON YOUR COFFEE TAABLE AS WELL AS IN YOUR KITCHEN.

Crystal coffee table book.......2007-08-29
I love the beauty of the pictures of the crystals out in natural locations. They are breath taking. The energy discriptions are short and to the point with the usual hardness and vibrational information. I greatly appreciate information regarding the misrepresentation of some stones as other more expesive or rare stone too. This book just plane feels good. There is a definate Christian spin to some of the energy discriptions.
very heartfelt..........2006-11-13
but otherwise a little lacking.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it really comes from the heart and has themes that differ from other book that encompass this topic. The entire book contains very encouraging, spiritual messages, and many are of a very Christianized nature, which gives it distinction from the traditional books. Nothing is inherently exclusive, so the messages presented are very open to all people of all traditions.
The weaknesses that prevent this stone from getting a five star rating really lie in the incompleteness of the work. Many very unusual stones are discussed, and all but very few have pictures to accompany them, though most of the unusual stones have very little information regarding their uses. The book does a beautiful job of including so many different gemstones, but their origins and mineralogy are totally left out of this work. Locations from which they come and the chemical formulae are found with each page, but there is insufficient data concerning any other of the scientific aspects of these stones. Some things, like relative refractive indices or easily identifiable physical properties would make identification of cut gemstones so much easier.
This book is not unlike a textbook; it is a sturdy volume meant to be treasured like its subjects. I am sure you will enjoy this one!
Great Book!.......2004-09-07
This book is awesome! It tells all about crystals and what they do. It shows a great picture, composition, hardness, color, and the source! I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves gemstones and would like to learn about the effects that they have on people!
Excellent Book!.......2000-03-20
This book contained vast amounts of information on every gem topic there is. It helped me tremendously in learning about gems. It also saved me a lot of money when I went out and purchased a ruby bracelet for my mother and diamond ring for my wife. I probably saved at least a thousand dollars just from using the knowledge obtained from this book. It is a great book and I recommend everyone buying it. It is a great investment!

Book Description
Like many young men, Adolph Newton forged his parents' signature at seventeen to join the Navy and fight the Japanese in the Pacific. But unlike others, Newton was black and became one of the very few African Americans to serve in the general enlisted ranks rather than as a mess attendant serving meals to officers and cleaning their quarters. In this intense, long-overdue memoir, he describes his life as a black seaman on an integrated warship, explaining how he attempted to deal with discrimination and personal freedom and how, despite the difficulties, he developed a lasting affection for the Navy. Newton's story is representative of a generation of African Americans who came of age during the war, needing to prove themselves by fighting for a country that had denied them the full benefits of citizenship. A landmark work, it is the first memoir to be published by a black sailor in the forefront of Roosevelt's order to integrate the Navy.
With brutal honesty and a gift for turning a phrase, Newton puts the reader in his shoes as a nave but proud teenager forced to adapt to the Navy's rules and discipline and to the rejection of shipmates, while coping with the stress of combat and an international carnival of dangers and temptations. Based on journals he kept during the war, the book retains the raw emotions and expressions of a young sailor in the 1940s. He speaks candidly of race relations and how his views evolved from conversations with Southern blacks, confrontations with prejudiced whites, and encounters with Europeans. And his story does not stop at war's end. Unable to find civilian employment that utilized his technical skills, he re-enlisted in 1946 only to find the Navy more rigid than during the war.
His reflections on life as a young black man knowing that just being good was not good enough make an important contribution to the record. At the same time his recountings of misdeeds, including the ribald pursuit of "the perfect liberty" and its sometimes chilling consequences, make entertaining reading.
This memoir gives a fresh, bold voice to the thousands of enlisted men, black and white, who served in the Navy during the 1940s and breaks new ground with its vivid depiction of the Navy's awkward first steps toward integration.
Customer Reviews:
A valuable and honest memoir of integration in the U.S. Navy.......1999-03-11
Adolph Newton joined the U.S. Navy during the Second World War by forging his parents signatures. In the service he became one of the first Black machinist's mates (MM) and was assigned to a maintenance unit in the Philippines. After the war, he reeenlisted in the Navy and served on a repair ship. His memoir is honest and personal, and includes frank descriptions of looking for (and finding) women and liquor in liberty ports around the world. Occasionally he even had to stand up for his right to fight for his country. He did suffer gratuitous racial insults and unfair discipline, and speaks candidly about his opinions about white folks. An interesting touch is his love of jazz and popular music; MM Newton frequently recalls what songs were popular at a particular time and even takes credit for exposing other sailors on his repair ship to bebop. The main shortcomings of this book can be laid to the publisher : no index, no maps, and no glossary. Overall, strongly recommended for those interested in the integration of the U.S. Navy and the common life of the naval enlisted man. Parents : if your child wants to use this for a school report, read it FIRST.
