Book Description

THE FIRST NOVEL IN A GRIPPING NEW MYSTERY SERIES

In the suspenseful tradition of Ian Rankin comes a pulse-quickening debut novel set in the Scottish countryside -- from a compelling new voice in mystery fiction.

Seth Mornay, an ex-Royal Marine, returned home two years ago to start a new life working for the Grampian Police Force. Now a detective sergeant with the Criminal Investigation Division, Mornay is more interested in seducing women than clearing his open cases -- much to the disgust of his partner, Constable Claire Gillespie, the one woman Mornay has put off limits.

Early one misty morning, the body of a woman is found brutally stabbed in an old church graveyard, a broken garden stake lying nearby. Charged with solving the bizarre crime, Mornay struggles to break a case that seems to have no pattern. But as he discovers unexpected ties to an unsolved case from the past, the attacks accelerate.

With a jealous and vindictive supervisor undermining him at every turn, and complications from his personal life threatening to destroy his career, Mornay finds himself racing against time to stop the killer from striking again....

3 out of 5 stars Ok- reasonable beach read.......2006-08-09

This book could have been better. The lead character and his partner are interesting enough but essentially stock characters-- the damaged but brilliant cop and his sexy sidekick. It would be interesting to see if they're better developed in future books. The story could be set anywhere- Scotland could be Cleveland or South Florida for all the part it plays. And the mystery itself is overly complicated and not difficult to figure out. The real challenge is trying to keep the subplots and characters sorted out-- too many minor players have too much time in the book. Rather than allowing them to be introduced and then developed over several books, the author seems to want to introduce and flesh out everyone right from the beginning.
That all said, I've read much worse and if you read quickly and don't mind a few glitches, it's worth an afternoon.

3 out of 5 stars A good read........2005-04-10

The main reason this did not rate more highly was my constant irritation of the author referring to previous cases and history yet knowing this is the first book in the series. However, the character of Mornay is interesting; dimensional and imperfect, along with his partner Constable Claire Gillespie. Even though I did suspect the identity of the killer fairly soon, there was enough going on to make me turn the pages and keep me involved. I shall probably follow this series to the next book, more for the characters than the plot.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Mystery Novel !!.......2004-02-08

The Last Victim in Glen Ross, by M.G. Kincaid, is a must read for anyone looking for a suspenseful and riveting mystery novel. The author takes you through a spellbinding ride then blows you away with a breathtaking ending. I recommend this novel to anyone who is ready to read a great mystery. After reading this novel I had a hard time finding a book, that I haven't read, to match this one.
Being that I am Scottish, I was very anxious to get my hands on this book!! I can't wait for the next!

4 out of 5 stars a moody, sexy cop.......2004-02-05

I picked this up for a change of pace from my usual reads, and found myself intrigued from page one. Liked the characters, particularly the main character, DS Mornay - very real and not so perfect - and I really liked the setting, makes me want to read more books set in Britain and I'll certainly be reading Ms. Kincaid's second book as soon as it comes out. Well done.

1 out of 5 stars Too Easy to Figure Out.......2004-01-14

I have read many mystery books, and I am from a Scottish family and I must say I was very disapointed by this book. I had the mystery solved from the time a body was discovered. I kept hoping for a twist but it ended with no such luck. If you are hoping for a good mystery and many twists, this is not the book for you. It read much like a "Nancy Drew" book rather than an adult mystery. It was much too easy to figure out!

Book Description

An exciting modern fantasy based on Cherokee traditions; a moving love story; a cry of protest against crimes against native peoples - and more. A young Cherokee, his dead (but still sarcastic) shaman grandfather, and the Asian woman they both love. "One crackling hell of a book - suspenseful, funny, sad, angry, with people in it who come alive and whom we really get to care about, and with a close, unblinkered look at lifeways that are strange to most of us but touch our hearts." -- Poul Anderson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Really fine action fantasy with authentic colors.......2004-01-05

This guy has a very solid feel for motorcycling, sex, love, trouble, fights, dirty politics, and (as far as I can tell) Native American spirituality - and his writing is superbly wry and witty. The fantasy monster itself is a little hokey, but just read around it - this author is one of the best discoveries I've run across.

5 out of 5 stars I have a new Favorite Author.......2003-10-31

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It has some of the Heinlein "Bootstrap" qualities that make a story worth reading for me while seeming more realistic in it's portrayal of people and their characters. Heinlein got a bit preachy sometimes. What can I say, after this book William Sanders is my favorite author.

5 out of 5 stars Boy Howa!.......2002-10-01

This gem of a genre-bending book defies catagorization. It's grand! There really is a Ballad of Billy in this book, and it goes like this:
"Billy Badass was a warrior
From Oklahoma way
A hero of his nation
Who had wore the Green Beret.
He met the purtiest lady
She was from a fur-off land
And Billy Badass fell in love
With the Rose of Turkestan"
Jerry Dwayne, of Jerry Dwayne Austin and the Piss-Cutters
House Band of "The Last Church of Naked City, Losers Welcome" Las Vegas, Nevada.

Billy Badass is our hero's nickname. His enrollment card in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma states his name as William E. Badwater. And the Rose of Turkestan is Janna Turanova , of Kazakhstan, part of the former Soviet Union. A bunch of yonegs have been messin' with stuff they don't understand, causing all manner of real radioactive nightmares out in the Nevada desert. And Billy and the Rose become embroiled in the imbroglio.

Notwithstanding the impending destruction of the planet, Sanders and his characters maintain a sense of humour. There are dealings with a minor bureaucrat in the INS, threatening mean and nasty things regarding Janna's VISA (the immigration status - not the Credit Card.) Bureaucrat says: "We don't just hand out the Green Card to everyone who asks. There are criteria to be met, guidelines to be followed - do you have any idea how many people want to come to America to live?" To which Billy responds "Some of us already ran into that problem." And regarding the flawed, lone law enforcement officer on the Bucktail Springs Reservation: "Leonard isn't exactly your Tony Hillerman breed of Indian cop."

And this isn't exactly a typical Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror/ Mystery/Action/Romance. It's a uniquely delightful brew!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-12-24

BALLAD is brilliant, as is its author, William Sanders. This book is a must-read for any fan of contemporary literature. A fascinating blend of SF/Fantasy, Horror and social commentary, BILLY takes you to places you'll love -- heights of which you've only dreamed, and depths of darkness in which you might fear to tread. But Sanders safely guides you through it all with the talent and imagination of a master storyteller. The book contains everything that makes life worthwhile: true love, heroism, motorcycles and monsters. Who could ask for anything more?

4 out of 5 stars Passionate and exciting contemporary fantasy.......2001-12-11

Fortunate SF readers will have encountered William Sanders' earlier novels _Journey to Fusang_, a fine, funny-serious, alternate history about a North American colonized by the Chinese instead of the Europeans, and _The Wild Blue and the Grey_, another alternate history about Indians from an independent state as pilots in World War I. Even more fortunate folk may have encountered some of Sanders' other work, published in a variety of categories.

Sanders has recently returned to writing SF, mostly in shorter forms. He has published such excellent stories as "Elvis Bearpaw's Luck", "The Undiscovered" (which was nominated for both the Nebula and the Hugo), and "Jennifer, Just Before Midnight". He has also published a new SF/Fantasy novel, _The Ballad of Billy Badass and the Rose of Turkestan_. Even more recently he has published a fine mystery, _Smoke_, and an excellent science fiction novel, _J._ -- both are very well worth finding.

This is a very fine contemporary fantasy, with an exciting story in the forefront, as well an involving love story, plenty of humor, and even a message. The message doesn't get in the way of the story: instead, the story supports the message, and the message is a passionately presented and definitely worth hearing.

The title characters are Billy Badwater, a Cherokee and a Gulf War veteran, and Janna Turonova, a doctor from Kazakhstan. Janna is in the US partly to alert people to the terrible environmental damage done in Kazakhstan by Soviet nuclear testing and toxic waste. Billy meets her at a powwow, and they fall in love. Soon Billy finds himself chasing this woman across the western U. S., and on a reservation in Nevada he finds evidence that much as the Soviets used the Asian people's land as dumping grounds and testing grounds, the U. S. has used Native American land in the same way. The fantasy element arises from a monster that is called forth by the toxic waste in Nevada. Billy, aided by Janna and some other friends, especially his dead Grandfather, is pushed to use Indian magic in battle against the monster. The story is exciting and involving throughout, and the love story is convincing and sexy.

4 out of 5 stars 3-Step Process to lowering your blood pressure.......2007-08-24

Let me begin by stating that the amount of knowledge that you already have regarding high blood pressure will greatly affect how much you gain from reading this book. Over half of this book covers very basic information regarding blood pressure; For example, what is blood pressure, what is a normal blood pressure reading, the difference between high blood pressure and hypertension, the co-relation between sodium consumption and blood pressure, etc. If you don't have some or any of the information regarding these topics, then you will surely gain alot of knowledge and will really enjoy reading this book. If you know most or all of these topics already, then you will gain nothing from over half of the book.

Now, the other half of the book centers around concrete examples on how you can lower your blood pressure, using a three step approach. The three-step approach, as you would imagine, is composed of stress management, diet, and exercise. I personally gained a world of knowledge on the stress management section, since I already had alot of the knowledge regarding how diet and exercise affect blood pressure.

Although this review might sound like I didn't like this book, that is not the case. I simply had done alot of research on my own, and found alot of the information that I already knew in this book. However, I did encounter plenty of information that will help me to continue to keep my blood pressure at regular levels. I especially reccommend this book for anyone that has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure, especially as an initial research tool.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my breakfast life!.......2007-06-08

This book changed my life, at least the breakfast part of my life. After trying a few recipes, I haven't used pancake/waffle mix since, nor have I bought boxed cereal. Now I make pancakes, waffles, granola and muffins from scratch. The desserts are great too. And I love reading his antedotes about each recipe, it is the first cookbook I read cover to cover.

4 out of 5 stars surprisingly tasty.......2000-08-03

I bought this book as a 'gag gift' for my wife, a New England native who LOVES maple syrup. Turns out it is a really wonderful cookbook about "cooking" with maple syrup (anybody can pour it on stuff). If you use grade B maple syrup (much darker, with a very strong maple flavor) you don't even need to use much. This book made a maple syrup lover out of me!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book If You Own A Cocker Spaniel........2007-06-13

I recently adopted a Cocker Spaniel from the humane society. I had no knowledge of this breed and had not planned on adopting a breed until I researched it first. Well, Sydney caught both my eye and my husband's. She is adorable with her big brown eyes. I ordered the book after I adopted her, and I am glad that I did because it helps to understand the breed. Consider a Cocker Spaniel, and buy this book first.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Book.......2006-08-12

This book is perfect for someone who wants good general knowledge about the Cocker Spaniel. It covers all the basics and then some. It is a small book. It is concise and perfect for the average pet owner. I like it very much.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for New Cocker Spaniel Owners.......2001-02-23

This book is exactly what the new Cocker Spaniel owner needs. Not bogged down with technicalities about the dog's structure, it concentrates on presenting the important things about your new pup. A smattering of the history of the breed fills it out nicely. Judy Iby is no lightweight either...Judy herself has put over 100 AKC titles on her own Cocker Spaniels, including obedience, conformation, tracking and agility. She has mentored probably hundreds of new Cocker Spaniel owners through the puppy and adolescent years of their new companion dog's life, and now she shares this wisdom with the rest of us.

I would have rated the book a "5 star" book for just Judy Iby's contributions, but I think the "generic" parts of the book that are tacked on on by Howell to construct their series of breed books almost detract from the fine quality of the original contributions about the Cocker Spaniel by Judy Iby.

It is accessible, inexpensive, and a Gem for new Cocker Spaniel owners.

Do I prune my hydrangea in the fall or do I wait until early spring?
When is it safe to put out tomatoes?
      Can I divide iris now?

If you have ever asked yourself questions like these, Month-by-Month Gardening in The Desert Southwest is for you. Gardening is a journey, not a destination. The day-by-day gardening experiences - planting a few onion sets in the first warm afternoon of spring… the surprises - a purple crocus before the snow has even gone … the satisfaction - fresh green beans on the dinner table, or tomatoes, bright and red, safely in quart jars … these are the things that keep the gardener coming back year after year.

Month-by-Month Gardening in The Desert Southwest is packed with information that explains what needs to be done and when it needs to be done in the southwestern garden. Topics include:

Whatever your gardening interests or the time of year, you can take the guesswork and mystery out of gardening. You will become a more satisfied gardener … and your garden will show it!

5 out of 5 stars Help in a strange climate.......2006-03-05

This is my gardening bible. I read it at the beginning of every month to plan my gardening activity for the next few weeks.

The Arizona desert is like no other climate in the USA. It has low rainfall, concrete-like soil and huge temperature variations. Gardening in this state is very unique and this book tells me what I need to do... so I don't have to remember.

Information from books written by authors without the experience of gardening in Arizona, doesn't work in this state. Mary Irish has spent her life working for a variety of Arizona gardening organizations and is an expert on agaves. She knows the climate so her information works... simple as that

The book is organized by section - trees, shrubs, grass with a chapter for every month in each section. Tasks are outlined so the information you need is easy to find.
