Book Description

Martin Terrier is a hired killer who wants out of the game-so he can settle down and marry his childhood sweetheart. After all, that's why he took up this profession! But the Organization won't let him go: they have other plans. Once again, the gunman must assume the prone shooting position. A tour de force, this violent tale shatters as many illusions about life and politics as bodies.

Jean-Patrick Manchette (1942–1995) rescued the French crime novel from the grip of stodgy police procedurals, restoring the noir edge by virtue of his post-1968 leftism. Manchette is a totem to a generation of French mystery writers, and his stories have inspired several films, including Claude Chabrol's Nada.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars great and unique noir........2007-05-01

hello.....could somebody out there please get more english editions of jean-patrick manchette's work back in print. i have read 3 to kill (which was fantastic) and now the prone gunman (equally fantastic), and i need more of this author. the prone gunman is an assassin novel unlike any other you will read. fresh, inventive, very unpredictable, with a cast of characters that nicely dodge being cliches. this is a great noir book. and i highly recommend it as an addition to your home.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Noir.......2004-07-18

I had previously read Manchette's other translated book, Three to Kill, and gave it a four star review. As The Prone Gunman is even better still, it warrants the full five stars. This is what noir is all about - a lean plot and lots of action. Indeed, I started reading the book one night, lost track of the body count, was amazed at the thrills and was shocked to discover I was only on page 48.

The plot revolves around a hired killer who is looking to retire and hook back up with the girl he had left behind some years before. Of course, nothing goes as planned. The family of a prior hit is after him, his bosses do not want him to retire and our "hero" himself is simply emotionally unprepared for a normal existence. Added to this is that the characters with whom he interacts are all morally vacuous. A reader will not find any sentimentality in this book. He will, however, find a lot of excitement.

4 out of 5 stars The Bleak World of French Noir.......2003-03-25

French crime writer Manchette's final novel was published in 1981 and now finally appears in English over twenty years later. Unmistakably influenced by Jean-Pierre Melville's brilliant 1967 film "Le Samourai", the story is about Martin, a professional hit man who wants to quit the business and return home to claim his childhood love. However, the mysterious government agency who hires him wants him to do just one last job... Of course this is an old story, and naturally Martin finds it's not so easy to just walk away. Having come from a miserable small town upbringing, he's proven himself in the big bad world and just wants to retire to a quiet beach somewhere with his old girlfriend. But this is the noir world of shattered illusions-as one character puts it, "You're dreaming, there are no more desert islands!" It doesn't take too much reading between the lines to uncover Manchette's larger political metaphor in the story of a kid who hires himself out to do someone else's killing for ten years only to find it's tainted him forever. The book is brutally dark, but if you like the whole nihilist crime thing, it's worth the two hours it takes to read. The lean story unfolds in rapid, flat prose without an ounce of sentimentality and it's not hard to see why Manchette quit writing after this. If your world view is that bleak, there's not a whole lot else to say, is there?

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Disturbing.......2002-12-02

As one reviewer summed it up, this is Dashiel Hammett meets Guy Debord, and it's true; flat, spare prose with a sense of existential nihilism from which there is no escape. Fast, rough, violent reading, told in a matter-of-fact procedural manner. The ending is telegraphed rather obviously, but this is first rate work, and if you're into violent noirs, you should read it. What a film it would make, in the right hands!

5 out of 5 stars The Lance of Kanana.......2007-06-11

This is a terrific book--a favorite since our family read it together more than 50 years ago. I have purchased many copies over the years and am now buying them for my grandchildren. The hero story of Arabia is full of adventures, challenges and character. And it's not fantasy or science fiction. It would make a great movie. Maybe someone will discover it.

              4 out of 5 stars Always Right.......2006-03-20

I purchased this book some time ago because I already owned a number of other books written by Bernard Jensen, only to find out I needed this books advice when I found out I had leaky gut syndrome. The book makes not mention of the disease as it hadn't been diagniosed when it was first written, I was going to do a full course of 12 Colonic Irrigations and spend a fortune on naturopathic supplies, i'm not totally cured but I am 100% better i.e. the sugar/alcohol cravings are gone, memory is better, energy levels are better etc

5 out of 5 stars He knows what he's talking about.......2005-10-08

This book was very helpful. I was goint to spend $600 doing a detoxification, including supplements and hydrotherapy. But I decided to buy Dr. Jensen's book and try the 11 day detoxicification he writes about on my own. It was a great success. I feel healthier and learned a lot about my body. I also lost 14 pounds and look foward to staying on this healthy path.

4 out of 5 stars death begins in the colon.......2001-01-09

Dr. Jenkin's new book is excellent reading for anyone who wants to get on the right road to good health and healing. On the last page of chapter 1, Death begins in the colon, Dr. Jenkins makes a powerful statement about your digestive track and why you should be proactive in taking good care of it. If you want to live a longer and healthier live, I recommend you read this book to get started down the right road to good health.

                4 out of 5 stars Cigar book.......2007-09-11

A fine book on cigars. I completely enjoyed this book and refer to it often.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cigar History.......2007-07-22

I just picked this book up recently (2007) and though the book is getting on in age, it really holds up today. The first half of the book discussed history of tobacco, cigars, and smoke shops. The authors can really tell a good story and their historylessons were highly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read for the cigar enthusiast.......2002-03-21

The Good Cigar is to your brain what your tobacconist's walk-in humidor is to your nose. It's a cornucopia of history, anecdotes, and general cigar lore that makes you want to relax and stay a while.

Jeffers and Gordon start their history with the original tobacco lovers, the indigenous people of the Americas. Then they discuss the introduction and development of tobacco in Europe and the New World. Jeffers and Gordon acquaint us with many of the people who have influenced our image of cigars (Mark Twain, Groucho Marx, Ernest Hemingway, etc.) and give quotation buffs a nice supply of material. From the "Wooden Indian" to cigar boxes and bands, they explore the history and artistry of cigar paraphernalia.

The authors include a cigar index complete with their personal ratings of each cigar. The book shows its age here, as some of the cigars are no longer sold. This doesn't necessarily detract from the book. You just might run into somebody who's had a box aging for several years and is willing to trade a few sticks. In a situation like this, an older index of cigars would be helpful.

Jeffers and Gordon also cover humidors, cutters, and lighters. They even include a resource guide. These sections might lead the cigar neophyte to believe that cigar smoking is a costly pursuit, but this doesn't have to be the case. Less expensive and perfectly functional accessories are readily available; but as Winston Churchill warned, "Shoddiness can be found easily, in quantity" (I got that from this book). Choose carefully. There are several Internet message boards devoted to cigars that would be more helpful than this book in finding accessories that fit your taste and budget.

                5 out of 5 stars A Fine Reference Work - Bravo!.......2000-06-27

This is a useful and well-written cigar guide. It is getting a bit dated, but it is still very good for all cigar lovers.

I only gave this book one star as this book seems geared strictly towards new dog owners. The Frenchie photos are cute, but not much info that I could use.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow........2005-05-22

This is a great book for any Frenchie owner. Unlike some books which claim to be breed specific but aren't this book contains lots of information on French Bulldogs. It covers housebreaking, Feeding, Grooming, Health and so much more. There are lots of great photos as well. I got this book shortly before getting my Frenchie, and it was so helpful. It's written in a way that someone new to the breed like me, or someone that is intreseted in a pet rather then a showdog can understand. This is a book written by a true Frenchie lover, for Frenchie lovers and newbies.

                5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL RESOURCE!.......2005-04-07

I have read and reread this book numerous times. I have owned Frenchies for nearly ten years and this is hands down the single best overall basics on the breed. The author presents important information in an engaging, straight forward manner and is a world renowned expert in Frenchies. If you are considering a frenchie or have recently added one to your family, this book will be an invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Anyone Considering A French Bulldog.......2005-03-30

I bought this book when we were leaning towards getting a French Bulldog and wanted more in-depth information. The author is a well-respected breeder of Frenchies with many years of experience. She knows what she is talking about first-hand. This is a great book for anyone considering adding a Frenchie to their family. It is full of all the information you need without excessive information that would overwhelm someone trying to decide if this is the right breed for them. Read this book and you will be well prepared for your flat-faced family member on arrival!

After aquiring my first Frenchie puppy a few months ago, I read this book cover to cover. Now I use it almost daily as a resource--I even quote this book at my vet's office. I would definitely recommend this book to any future Frenchie owner as it has really been a lifesaver for me.

4 out of 5 stars Not the Best, Not the Worst..........2006-05-25

I am definetly not a Bulldog fan. I HATE them! But I am making a dog website and I looked at all the books in our library and tried to find one with new breeds in it. I saw that this book contained the ancestor of the mastiff-bulldog breeds! That was cool! What I have to say about the actual book is that in the first part is that it talks about the dogs, and then talks about health and care and things like that, and then it goes onto plain dogs. I give this a four because of these opposing properties.

3 out of 5 stars Great info on the breed but too much filler on others.......2000-03-20

I read this cover to cover in one sitting. This text has some pertinent and practical bulldog facts and care tips, but the problem is that the majority of this book is not Bulldog-specific! A huge chunk is about the care and health of ANY dog. Very readable but disappointing in its lack of specificity.

                Book Description

Today's gardeners have more plants and design ideas to choose from than ever before. But is there something missing in their gardens if they ignore their ties to the past? Denise Wiles Adams has written a remarkable book of history and horticulture that documents the changing plant palette of American gardens. From the colonial era to the pre-World War II period, no region of the country is neglected and no major plant group unrepresented. From a database of more than 25,000 plants and hundreds of antique nursery catalogs, she has distilled a unique survey of American ornamental gardens. Nobody concerned with historic homes and properties can afford to be without it. An important resource that will be consulted for generations, Restoring American Gardens is a vital link between gardeners and their predecessors throughout history.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of information on heirloom ornamentals.......2004-05-03

Gardeners who enjoy a healthy dose of gardening history in their guides will find Denise Wiles Adams' Restoring American Gardens a treasure trove of information on heirloom ornamentals from 1640-1940. Small color photos of each plant abound, but it's the paragraphs of description for each, including garden design notes and special remarks, which sets this apart from competitors.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of research, well presented.......2004-04-16

This is an amazing piece of research and one of the few books whose appendices are a "must read".

The bok is about American ornamental plant history - the story of garden plants from their introduction, usually from Europe, or from the local fields and forests. It answers questions such as "Who first cultivated it in America?", "How was it used?", "Who propagated or sold it?" and "Why was it popular?".

The writer consulted over 300 seed and nursery catalogues from all over the US and ended up with a data base of over 25,000 different taxa.

The first chapter of the book looks at the historical detail of the garden landscape and it is illustrated with well-selected photographs, many taken from postcards. The second chapter links the gardens to the architectural styles from different time periods and the third chapter looks at the way garden styles evolved in different regions of the country. The largest part of the book is a catalogue of over 1000 heirloom plants - trees, shrubs, vines, perennials and roses that were offered for sale between 1719 - 1939. For each plant there is given common names, family, date of introduction, earliest American citation, zones and description, taken from the garden writers of history.

This book presents a vast amount of material and it's a treasure trove for the garden historian. Even the most casual reader will enjoy the historical and botanical illustrations. It really is a treat to find such a well-organized work of scholarship that is so readable and attractively presented.

                  3 out of 5 stars WASN'T HELPFUL TO ME.......2001-11-26

The first thing I tried to learn from the book was how to change the month of a calendar on a page of a newsletter. The only thing about calendars in the index was how to create a calendar as a separate document. I wasted more time trying to find what I needed than it would have taken to just (physically) cut a paste a calendar on a page and photocopy it.

Most of the directions in the book were of little use to me because I had already figured out how to resize a frame or make text wrap around a picture, for instance, before I bought the book. The software makes things like that easy. It does look like I'll be able to learn some interesting things (not necessarily the ones I need most) when I have the time, but right now I have to get another newsletter out....

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK THATS EASY TO LEARN!.......2000-06-16

Are you tired of reading? Well, I am. I have bought 4 differentbooks on MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 2000, but I have to say that this was thebest.

This is a great book. I really enjoyed this book because it was fast and easy. I hate reading but I want to learn. This is the only book that has dozens of pictures and has easy directions in using MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 2000. This book is very useful and also very helpful. I understood everything and never got lost like some of the other books. I didnt know all the things you can do with PUBLISHER 2000, until I got this book, then I learned to do everything. You can learn to do everything like making valentine cards to making a brochure.

I recommend this book to everyone. Take my word and get this book. This book is worth the price and you will never regret it.

                  Enjoy!
