Book Description
He would rise up as savior of the State, but Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger already has a lot on his mind. In the year of his aedileship, Decius is expected to stage elaborate and expensive games out of his own pocket. Along with his duties of pleasing the crowds with the feats of gladiators and wild beasts, are the more practical, and commonly neglected, ones of maintaining the city and its laws. It is these more mundane duties that call him to the scene of a recently built and more recently collapsed tenement building. Determined to punish the greedy parties who used cheap materials and caused the deaths of hundreds, Decius sets out to exact justice. It is easier said than done, especially when bodies and evidence go missing, and his family pressures him to cease the investigation. As he seeks out the politicians, philosophers, and tradesmen of the day, it becomes clear that the collapse of the building was deliberate, and Decius could be going after some of the most powerful men in Rome.In this eighth installment of the series, Roberts once again provides authentic detail in the everyday Roman customs, as well as a fascinating picture of the growing unsteadiness of this famed Republic.

Good Old Bad Romans.......2007-07-03
I enjoyed this book and I enjoy the entire series.
It follows the history of the period through the activities of an individual. One comes to be interested in him and think of him much like a contemporary man. He is not a contemporary and occaisionally reminds the reader of this.
You do not have to be an avid student of the Roman republic to enjoy this book. But it may create just such an interest
Good addition to an excellent series.......2006-12-31
John Maddox Roberts' latest tale from the late Roman Republican period is satisfying on all accounts. We catch up with Decius Mettelllus, one of the few men in Rome, it seems, with some principles, and his struggles with the nasty, scheming, vulgar and dangerous boys and girls of the big city. Mettellus has returned to the capital after a provincial tour of duty and is in good form as he climbs the political hierarchy while attempting to keep his many enemies at bay. It's a fun yarn with plenty of research by the author to accurately capture the social and political events of the period. Maddox Roberts rarely misses with this series and this is one of the better recent stories.
GREAT!!!!!.......2006-08-24
I luved this book. Other than the fact that it had some disgusting parts in it, it was very interresting.
As brilliant as ever.......2005-04-16
Decius Quintus Caecilius Metellus is back for his eighth installment and JMR doesn't disappoint.
It's the interregnum of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio Nasica and our erstwhile hero is three months into his first aedileship having returned from Gaul from his previous outing with Julius Caesar. Being responsible for the maintenance of Rome's public buildings and highways he finds himself picking over the rubble of a collapsed insula, while some astute observations from Hermes, his irreverent personal slave, leads him to commence an investigation of a shoddy construction business that has claimed the lives of the slaves Galatea and Antaeus and over two hundred more inhabitants. And all this whilst he is preparing his own costly munera in order to fulfil his political ambition.
As ever, the culprits are somewhat higher up the political ladder than he initially thinks and several warnings from people including his own paterfamilias do not deter our sleuth with a reputation for intractable honesty from launching into a full investigation. Both he and Hermes work their way through dishonest construction foremen, previous aediles, censors, brothels, the Cloaca Maxima and the Forum before uncovering a crime of passion that was merely a pointer to a greater corruption. In the end the initial deaths were some what justified and Decius neatly sinks two great men during an eventful four days, during which the Tiber river floods ensuring, as Marcius Porcius Cato so neatly concludes: "the finest manifestation of divine will in my lifetime".
As ever there are an assortment of colourful characters including Caninus, Marcus Aemilius Scauras, Justus, Harmodias, Lucilius, Folius and Messala. With him are the Greek physician Asklepiodes and his wife Julia, niece of Caesar.
The cast move around Decius with slow inexorability as his Socratic sleuthing takes him into the mire of truth in a manner that is perfect to read. JMR took a long break after the opening novel of the SPQR series but his return in recent novels has proven a major success in the world of the ancient murder mystery. Whilst he showed the likes of Saylor and Davis what to do all those years ago, his newest efforts are right up their with them. Any fan of the genre must read and own JMR's SPQR series and I eagerly look forward to `The Princess and the Pirates'.
Enjoyable series.......2004-07-14
I found this to be another enjoyable entry in an entertaining series. The SPQR series is set in the last days of the Roman Republic, as powerful men, including Julius Caesar, Pompey, Crassus, and various lesser figures, including the heads of criminal gangs within the city of Rome, compete against each other to gain power over Rome. Each novel in the series fits a mystery plot into actual historical events of the period. The protagonist, a young nobleman who is an idealistic believer in the Republic, always fights hard not only to solve the mystery confronting him, but also to protect the Republic. An intrepid investigator, he invariably solves the mystery, but sees the Republic nevertheless growing ever more endangered as the series progresses.
While the main characters are not as strongly created as those in Lindsey Davis' somewhat similar mystery series, set later during the Roman Empire, the author's wryly humorous reinterpretations of Roman history and the figures who shaped it never fail to entertain.

The Right Reverend Risks... As Little As Possible - but still loses it all.......2006-05-26
Lucifer Jones has a talent for getting out of trouble that is only superseded by his idiotic behavior, easily manipulated greed, easily manipulated lust, suspicious miserdom, unscrupulous gluttony, wanton blasphemy, and a canny knack for getting into adventures in the first place. He proves the point better than any other character I know of, that an adventure is where some other guy gets into trouble, `cause, friend, the Reverend Lucifer Jones is never without trouble.
All through his adventures, Lucifer attempts to scam, cheat, con, steal, or otherwise obtain the necessary funds for the establishment of his Tabernacle, where he intends to do the lord's work with any attractive young women who're willing. All through his adventures, Lucifer is scammed, cheated, conned, beat up, shot at, and ejected and banned as a threat to the nation from every country within whose borders he sets a foot. From Hong-Kong to Paris, Transylvania to Peru, Lucifer makes his blindingly shady way. Just read it. I guarantee it's a gut-buster.
Lucifer Jones - Monty Python Meets Indiana Jones.......2000-01-26
The Right Reverend Doctor Lucifer Jones is neither a reverend nor a doctor nor right. He's a bumbling, money-grubbing fool from the Midwest. This wonderfully clever book follows Jones as he travels the world in search of a place to build his tabernacle. But along the way, Jones discovers lost civilizations, dragons, evil would-be world conquerers and every conceivable low-life. Jones is always looking for the next money making scam. The fact that Jones isn't too bright makes his adventures highly entertaining and very humorous. He eventually gets banned from every nation he encounters, from Hong Kong and Japan to England and Spain and everywhere inbetween. Highly entertaining stuff, laugh-out-loud funny.

only east coast will get anything out of this book.......2007-10-04
I will never forget the time I was in Boston and helped a blind man board a subway train. The doors nearly closed right on him! A lady nearby was truly amazed that someone would be so nice as to help a stranger having difficulty.
This book is for those who rarely experience common courtesy and have no clue as to how to behave in a civil manner.
If you get much out of this book, it's time for some drastic action!
I think the author needs to move to a more friendly environment!
The narration may drive you insane.......2007-09-14
This review is specific to the Audio CD version of the book.
The material is worthwhile, though not very original. The tips serve as good reminders of communication tools most of us have heard before. Too bad the narration makes me want to tear my eyeballs out. The narrator (author) both over-enunciates and over-dramatizes to a disturbing degree (think of an NPR host gone wild). I highly recommend the print version over the audio cd!
Fantastic book!.......2007-08-18
Another great book which I love and highly recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You
10 Stars! I am making new friends and deepening the relationships I have.......2007-07-04
I read Leil Lowndes's "Good-bye to Shy" and it worked like magic to get me over my shyness. After reading that book, I wanted more. I thought "How to Be a People Magnet" was the next logical step. It was! I am so glad I read this book.
There are three things that I especially like about it.
One is that iIt progresses logically. It starts with 1) making strangers like you instantly and how to "win their hearts in ten words or less." Then 2) Things you can do to turn a stranger into a friend. 3) A section on how a man can win with woman and the opposite. 4) How to build a whole network of friends. 5) How to give depth to a new or existing friendship, or reawaken an old one.
Second, it is based on truth, all backed up by studies on "interpersonal attraction.." For instance, "being popular is not the same thing as people really liking you." And "You don't just mke friends, you earn them by the benefits you bring to a relationship like intelligence, wit, or kindness."
A part that was especially helpful to me because of my old shyness was "how to work a party like a politician works a room." Also the book tells "how to create chemistry" with someone.
Third, "How to Be a People Magnet" is not just general advice. It is broken up into 55 concrete steps or "clauses" you sign off on. I did all of them, or at least most of them, and I notice a BIG difference in how new people are drawn to me and how my current friends seem to be warming to me even more.
I highly reccomend this book if you want to make more friends and deepen the relationships you have.
Bravo, Leil. I can't wait to read your other books.
A unique and wonderful guide to making friends, quickly and for life. .......2007-01-29
This is NOT your average book with trite advice on "how to make friends" It is far superior in every way. The author discusses the extreme importance of friendship. (She was inspired to write this book when two of her friends saved her life.)
There is solid evedience for everything she says. (She references 77 sociological 77 which are annotated in the back of the book.) And third, like all Leil Lownds' books, they are so much fun to read. Stories about some of her "friends" had me ROFL.
I love the author's concept of "you don't just make friends, you EARN them" by being a person of value yourself. She calls it The First Commandment of Friendship: "You must have something in order to receive." In other words, you must develop likeable and valuable qualities yourself so you can be an important friend to others. Not only does she talk about how to make friends quickly and make them grow, but how to nurture and enrich the ones you have.
The author explores how different women's friendships are from men's, and whether a man and a woman can truly have a "platonic" friendship and, how to do it, if you want to turn a friend into a lover.
One of my favorite concepts is her exploration of the "in" crowd and that "being popular does not mean being liked." This too is based on studies. I could go on and on about her insights on friendship that I've never read anywhere else.
I tried one of Leil's techniques which is to dig up a very old friend and spend a few hours with them. She writes, "Whether the friendship continues (or you relize why it ended,") you will both receive a priceless gift. Each of you will come away with a fresh and profound new sense of self." I did.
I will be forever grateful to the author for the awareness of the importance of friends - how to make them quickly, shed the superficial ones, and keep the ones you want for a lifetime.
Book Description
Lauded by Calvin Trillin as a man who "does not have to make to with translations like 'Shredded Three Kinds' in Chinese restaurants," in The Eater's Guide to Chinese Characters, James D. McCawley offers everyone a guide to deciphering the mysteries of Chinese menus and the opportunity to enjoy new eating experiences. An accessible primer as well as a handy reference, this book shows how Chinese characters are written and referred to, both in script and in type. McCawley provides a guide to pronunciation and includes helpful exercises so users can practice ordering. His novel system of arranging the extensive glossary—which ranges from basics such as "rice" and "fish" to exotica like "Buddha Jumps Wall"—enables even the beginner to find characters quickly and surely. He also includes the nonstandard forms of characters that often turn up on menus.
With this guide in hand, English speakers hold the key to a world of tantalizing—and otherwise unavailable—Chinese dishes.
Customer Reviews:
You may have fun if you are already fluent in Chinese.......2007-08-01
I am not. The book is very well written (in the first 7 pages that I managed to read) but the print quality is poor to the point of unreadable. It would work for English, but try figuring out something to remember about character for eel on page 170 (the dictionary half of the book) or about anything on "delicious vegetarian dishes" menu example on page 30.
I though of just tearing out the first 14 pages to take with me to China. I still may, it may be useful for a dozen of most common ingredients shown there. But the rest of the book is unreadable.
Yes, I figured out that the author is dead (and I have no complaints to the text, I love it in fact) so it can't really be rewritten. But printing is crap (in case I haven't made my point yet).
Guys, can you look for a better publisher?
The Eater's Guide.......2007-07-31
It is an interesting introduction to Chinese dishes but I was a bit disappointed because it uses old caracters, not the simlpified ones used in China. It was not indicated anywhere, I have realized it only after receiving the book.
An essential title for any Asian-loving foodie.......2006-04-15
In the early 80s, I consumed all of Calvin Trillin's books about food; who cared that he also wrote about politics?. If you have navigated to this book and *haven't* read Trillin's Tummy Trilogy by now, you'd better rush to get yourself a copy... it's the funniest food writing I've ever encountered.
Anyway, in Third Helpings, Trillin had a marvelous essay called "Divining the Mysteries of the East," about a college professor who provided his Linguistics students with a pamphlet -- which grew into a book -- that helped them decipher the menus in Chinese restaurants. As Trillin said, "McCawley has never been reduced to carrying in his wallet a note that says in Mandarin, 'Please bring me some of what the man at the next table is having.'" [This made me angry that I majored in Linguistics at Brandeis instead of going to the University of Chicago; my professor may have been a protege of Noam Chomsky, but I never even got a matzo ball from him.]
Several months after reading Trillin's book, I found a copy of the Eater's Guide to Chinese Characters in an airport bookstore. I snatched up a copy. (Good thing, too, because I never again saw the book on a shelf.) I've cherished this book for twenty years, and I cheered when I saw it was back in print. Let me see if I can explain why.
Unlike some of the reviewers here, I do not know any dialect of Chinese. I don't particularly want to; I just want to chow down on wonderful Chinese food.
There are few authentic restaurants, however, that do a great job of translating the menu. Other than expecting that I'll love any item about which the waiter says curtly, "You no like" (for the record, that deep fried pork stomach was excellent)... well, I'm left to figure it out on my own.
That is, I *was*, until I got my hands on McCawley's book. By the second page, he has taught you to recognize the characters for stir-fry, deep fry, dry roast. Shortly afterwards, you learn that the J-shaped character, ding, means "cube or dice." By page 7 you've learned the characters for celery, beef, fish. And then you begin to put the pieces together.
Within a very short time, you can figure out the basics of any Chinese menu. You can keep going (and, twenty years ago, I got quite a ways through this book, just for the fun of it); but scanning the first ten pages will help you avoid fried food, or figure out what the menu item "shredded three kinds" really has in it. Half the book is given over to a glossary, so you can figure out what the heck THAT item is in the fish column.
You probably won't read The Eater's Guide to Chinese Characters all in one sitting. But you'll be really, really glad you have it. And, I assure you, all your foodie friends will be jealous.
Great Book, wish I read this when I was younger!.......2005-08-19
This was a great book for someone that wants to know restaurant Chinese. Although I can read & write Chinese, I still found it enjoyable.
A Great Resource for Reading Chinese Menus.......2005-07-06
I've really appreciated this book as a supplement to my other Chinese instruction. In preparation for my upcoming move to Beijing, I wanted to be familiar with at least a few menu items, and I feel that after only a short time studying this book, I can actually do that!
Unfortunately, I do have a few qualms with the book. My biggest concern is that only the traditional characters are provided. Since some of the characters are significantly different in simplified Chinese, I've had to spend a lot of time cross-referencing with another dictionary to learn the simplified characters I'm more likely to encounter in Beijing.
Also, as another reviewer has mentioned, the print is a little too small for someone just starting to learn the characters. I sometimes find it difficult to make out the radicals contributing to a character, even though I already have a strong background in understanding written Chinese.
Finally, my last issue, which I admit is nit-picking, is that the author has developed his own version of stroke-counting for indexing the characters. While this is clearly an advantage to those who have no background in written Chinese, it can be confusing to one who knows the true stroke counts (especially when you keep switching dictionaries to cross-reference the simplified characters).
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the book and expect it to be extremely useful. Especially since many of the non-food character combinations used in names of dishes don't appear in general purpose dictionaries. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading a Chinese menu.

The best available resource on American HO Scale brass.......1997-11-23
The purpose of this book is to provide a catalog of all HOScale brassmodel locomotives imported into the United States through about 1992. The second purpose is to provide technical and price information to perspective buyers or evaluators of "preowned" brass. Mr. Glaab does an excellent job with the first function. The book is divided into locomotive types (steam, rod, geeared, narrow-gauge, diesels, gas-electrics and electrics). Within each catagory the models are broken down by railroad (AT&SF, B&O) and then by (wheel)class. I found very few models which were not listed in this book, and they were rare examples, handbuilt in Japan in the early days of brass modeling (1950s). Photographs are supplied of some of the models, drawn from Glaab's own private collection or those of his collector colleagues. The B&W photographic quality varies from fair to good. The book lists many thousands of models and provides an excellent overview of the productivity of this little known industry. It deals only with the locomotive models of Canada and the United States. It is unfortunate that it could not have been extended to the topic of brass rolling stock as well, but this would have almost doubled the size of the volume. Concerning the commentary on individual models. It is obvious the Mr. Glaab could not see or evaluate every single one of the thousands of models produced by some 40 importers since the early 1950s. However, he makes a valiant effort. Comments are grouped into 1,954 notes appendixed to the book. Although this establishes a somewhat awkward procedure for acquiring the necessary information, and although the notes are extremely brief and necessarily incomplete, they do provide useful information.Concerning the pricing of the models, one must use the information with considerable care. Mr. Glaab runs a large model train store (Peach Creek Shops) and has considerable information on the prices of models. However, the price structure has changed significantly since this book was written, particularly for many of the rarer handbuilt models of the 1950s. Theoretically, the prices were established on the basis of two or more known sales in the years prior to publication (he contacted me for some of this information). However, I note considerable disparities in the prices of many of the rarer models from pricing information known to me. For example, a rare model he listed at $8,000 recently sold at auction for $14,000+. Some even rarer models are markedly undervalued. With these considerations in mind, one might use this book as a beginning point (only) for the evaluation of a collection of model trains. All in all, this book is not only an excellent organizational effort, but represents the very best source available on the subject. Some useful appendixes include lists of importers, builders, the Whyte Wheel Classification for steam locomotives (Atlantic 4-4-2, etc.), and a useful bibliography. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of American brass models.

Book Description
Probing the nature and causes of continuing poverty and inequality among New York City's two largest minoritiesAfrican Americans and Puerto RicansAndrés Torres explores their struggles for economic and political survival through phases of exclusion, insurgency, and backlash. From post-World War II New York through the global New York of the 1990s, Torres analyzes the groups' respective evolutions within U.S. history; their incorporation into the nation's and the city's economies; and their strategies for political action, socioeconomic mobility, and community infrastructure.
