        Book Description

Revealing the Deeper Mysteries of China's Ancient Art for Health and Harmony

Over the centuries, the ancient martial art of Tai Chi Chuan, better known as Tai Chi, has exerted an almost magnetic influence for millions of seekers, attracted to its promise of physical resilience, emotional well being and spiritual illumination.

Emblematic of China's greatest traditions in philosophical and religious enquiry, there is a grand, elusive mystique to Tai Chi that seems to transcend its apparent emphasis on self-defense and good health.

What, really, is the basis for this enduring appeal? Why has Tai Chi become so popular in the West? And what benefits can we really expect from its practice?

In Tai Chi Chuan and the Code of Life, Graham Horwood brilliantly explores these and many other questions. Horwood demonstrates how Tai Chi links not only to the I Ching, to Taoism and to Chinese alchemy, but also to the greatest traditions of both Western alchemy and modern science.

A portrait emerges of Tai Chi as a dynamic blueprint for the true functioning of the universe. To practice Tai Chi correctly is to directly embody the great universal truths as they naturally unfold in our daily lives.

But what is correct Tai Chi practice? Moving beyond the theory, Horwood's Tai Chi Chuan and the Code of Life reveals deeply practical techniques, drawn from the Yang Family's formerly secret teachings, on how to optimize one's energetic and spiritual development. Without this kind of specialized knowledge, Tai Chi is unlikely to reward you with its most powerful benefits.

A treasure for novice and seasoned practitioner alike, Tai Chi Chuan and the Code of Life makes a welcome and far-ranging contribution to our understanding and practice of this mysterious discipline.

        5 out of 5 stars Clear Explanation.......2005-01-25

Tai Chi has been important to me for decades, and I respect my teacher (not Mr. Horwood). Nevertheless, my practice has attained only a modest level of sophistication, and the benefits I have derived have been modest. In searching the literature for help, I have found no shortage of impenetrable and flowery metaphor. I've found very little that is really practically helpful. This book is short, but it is very tightly written. It gives enough history to understand the many different guises under which Tai Chi appears. It explains clearly just WHY my practice is of limited value. It gives extremely accessible and functional approaches to improvement. Along the way, it imposes a body of knowledge of related symbols that is quite extensive. This "symbolic logic" has to be more than just memorized. A person has to "soak it in" so that it becomes a sort of second nature. If I can make an analogy to the production of a fine violin, the "symbology" is a "finish" that must not be "on the wood" but actually a "part of" the wood itself. Having prepared properly, the forms can then be used harmoniously. This seems to me a very excellent and expeditious approach. In only a couple of years of dedicated (extensive) practice, important gains can reasonably be expected. I have found nothing else like this---nothing nearly practical. It is a gift, but it isn't a free gift. Lots of study and lots of practice are needed, too. As Mr. Horwood says, if it were easy, it would hardly be worthwhile. Thanks so much.

        5 out of 5 stars Relieves Stress.......2002-10-10

I work for a Stock brokers in the city of London and can finish the day extremely stress out. Graham Horwood's book gave me an incite into relieving stress, through both exercise (Tai Chi) and healthy eating. I highly recommend this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-09-26

This book is extremely spiritual and interesting. The book has actually changed my life. Before reading this book I was remarkably unhealthy and often had health complaints. Since reading this book I have completely changed by dietary and exercise patterns, with a surprisingly positive result. It took some time and a lot of dedication and perseverance but the result was astounding. Graham Horwood is a genius and I feel I owe him a great deal, as he not only changed my outlook on life but also improved my health and vitality, which after all is the most important aspect of living a good life. An absolute must buy!

            Book Description

Asian comics are increasingly popular in the West, where comic and illustration enthusiasts prize them as objects of cultlike devotion. The growing interest in Japanese manga and Chinese manhua-broad terms that refer to cartoons, comics, and picture story books-stems equally from a desire for exotic forms of entertainment and an ever-increasing interest in the artistic, cultural, and political traditions of their originating countries. Wendy Siuyi Wong's voluminously illustrated book Hong Kong Comics examines the history of this genre from its beginnings in the early twentieth century to its most influential contemporary practitioners, and in the process traces the origin of a unique Hong Kong style. Over one thousand color manhua (each with English annotation) introduce the reader to this rich and varied form of Chinese popular culture. Wong examines a wide range of comic types, from political cartoons, to "lighthearted" humor comics, children's stories, and violent kung fu fighting works. Hong Kong Comics is the first comprehensive illustrated survey of the diverse and fascinating world of Hong Kong manhua.

Who trembles for you when you are sad, hangs his head when you are mad, and drools on you as if you were the most beautiful, brilliant, and tremendously fragrant of them all? A cat? No, a dog. With all due apology to the cats out there, the title of this book could not be more accurate. Dogs are the most loyal of friends, the most indiscriminate of companions, and the only ones who will always adore you even when you're bad. The dogs featured here range from an Irish Wolfhound named Brennain, who opposes war, fleas, and pills, to a pug puppy named Sydney whose only dislike is reading the daily newspaper so she poops on it instead. Author Jeff Selis's tribute to our slobbery, four-legged friends urges us to follow their lead for awhile and stop thinking about traffic jams and cloudy days and alarm clocks, and instead take time to smell the floweres, the trees... the cute terrier down th street. This books of canine portraits will bring a smile even to those feline types who bitterly wish that T-A-C spelled GOD.

The reason I got this book was because I was drawn in by the Yorky on the cover and the clever title. But I will admit, I was disappointed by the book's content as I was expecting a lot more. This book is very much like the 365 Days of Dogs desktop calendar where they show a fun photo of a dog and show a cute little story about him. Only this book profiles just a few fun loving dogs. Fun photos, cute profiles. Not a whole lot of content.

1 out of 5 stars Amateurish in Writing and Photography.......2006-01-07

I have no idea what all the other reviewers are seeing and reading, but it certainly isn't "Cat Spelled Backwards." These "portraits" of dogs are snapshots that any dog owner could have taken, and what can be considered no more than one or two-line captions aren't even "cute."

"Lucy D gets wiped out playing games with her brother and big sister in the big yard of their big house."

That's neither funny, nor fun, and laughable in only the sense that I spent 11 bucks on this thing that I will now give away next Christmas.

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully done!.......2005-06-20

I ran across this book by accident, and fell in love with it right in the store. It is now my favorite coffee table book, and I enjoy paging through it regularly. I am purchasing additional books to give as gifts.
This book has beautiful pictures and witty commentary. Some of these stories will both tug at your heartstrings and make you laugh all at the same time.

As the owner of my own dog walking company, and someone that it putting together a book of this kind on their own, I would like to give Mr. Jeff Selis a hug (and of course a run for his money, ha ha ha). This is a fabulous book. The pictures are great, and the text is just perfect. I laughed out loud and even got teary eyed a couple of times. I typically feel the bigger the better when it comes to photo books but this is the perfect size for what he's done. Of course we always love more more more, but I definitely feel like I got my money worth (which is definitely not always true). I own about every book of this kind there is (dog pics, with some kind of text) and truth be told, some are a real let down, even though there isn't a picture of a dog I don't adore, some have proven to be, maybe just too simple? Others show a lack of decision making skills (no, I like the descriptive words, no no, maybe quotes, no no wait, just throw it all in...) But so far in my collection, Jeff's book, Cat Spelled Backwards Doesn't Spell God, just overtook Shaff/Blount's If Only You Knew How Much I Smell You (also a good one), to sit in first place as my favorite. :)

            Dear Jeff,

            WELL DONE.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Selis' enchanting other book, "Dog Bless America", I was delighted to find this hidden gem. I found the dogs in this book to be every bit as adorable as the ones in his other book (Dog Bless America). I especially like the clever title. It took me a few seconds to do the math, but once I did, I HOWLED for two straight minutes! As a cat-owner(hi, Mittens!) I feel slightly guilty for having this book in my apartment. But in my heart, I believe even a cat would have a hard time not liking this wonderful, magical book!! God bless you, Jeff Selis, for your always-adorable dog pictures!

5 out of 5 stars A What and When of Gardening in Ohio.......2007-09-02

A very thorough and well organized guide. It not only tells you what to do but helps you frame the questions you should be asking. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GARDENING BOOK.......2007-01-14

I bought my first house in October 05 and I wanted beautiful spring and summer flowers. The property had roses and several other perennials. I needed a book that would help this beginner know what to do with what was already there as well as help me add new plants and flowers. I reviewed 25 gardening books from my library network last spring. This was by far my favorite. It gives you all the things you should know for lots of different flowers and plants and lets you know things you should be doing each month...like plant, prune, fertilize, etc. There are two versions of this book the original and this revised version. The revised costs a little more but there are color pictures in this edition as well as a much better layout in general. To me the newer edition was worth every extra penny and is the only one that I actually purchased out of all the books I reviewed. A must have for any Ohio gardener.

                      Book Description

The title of this book repeats compliments to the author and her chronological mates from younger women who recognize something in their presence that engenders consideration of a gratifying existence beyond middle age. The chapters describe Dona Irvin’s journey from childhood to older age, facing individual milestones that improved every stage of development, and her victories over low esteem through a long marriage, sustained friendships, a successful career, and a comforting spiritual foundation. The author explores her attitudes about evolving personal and societal conditions, spirituality, sexuality, and the uncertainties of the elder years. This book is the story of the continuing pleasures and the real challenges of life as an elder.
