5 out of 5 stars The funniest of them all.......2003-10-25

This is the third of Sarah Caudwell's sublimely funny murder mysteries narrated by Hilary Tamar, professor of legal history at Oxford, and featuring her young barrister friends. All four of these books are hilarious, and this is the funniest of the lot. Not many books in my life have made me cry with laughter, but this one reduced me to tears on several occasions. The adventures of young Michael Cantrip (educationaly disadvantaged, poor boy, he went to Cambridge)in the Channel Islands and in France and Monaco are full of wildly funny incidents. The poor boy has to suffer spending five hours shut in the boot of a car, being locked in a wine celler by a dotty waiter etc, meanwhile back in london his colleagues are having to cope with his barmy uncle. The plot is amazingly convoluted, and like all the books you may find yourself getting a bit lost in the complexity of the financial details, but who cares. Just enjoy the ingenious story, the wonderful characters, the witty dialogue, and Sarah Caudwell'smarvellous style. What a tragedy that there are only four of these marvellous books.

5 out of 5 stars Letter writing at its best.......2002-11-20

Cantrip is missing! Having been seconded to assist with the mysterious Daffodil settlement in the Tax Haven of the Channel Islands, he disappears, and there seem to be bodies all over the place, bodies and unlimited suspects who might well have been involved in murdering them - or then again might not. Even murder isn't necessarily on the cards here. Really, it is up to Professor Hilary Tamar to sort things out and find the culprits, and find Cantrip at the same time.

A while ago we were discussion (on a Jane Austen list) the art of the epistolary form of the novel - and perhaps this is the original idea behind Caudwell's form of mysteries - they are very reliant on letter writing. While the first mystery featured letters by Julia from Venice (Thus was Adonis murdered), and the second Serena from Corfu (The Shortest Way to Hades), this has Young barrister, Michael Cantrip, writing from..... well.... all over France - and using the handy mechanism of the Telex machine to send his messages back to the members of the nursery at 62 New Square (and the occassional less than flattering note to their Clerk, Henry).

A very funny, bouynat mystery with the usual Caudwell twist at the end - I guess the unexpected seems to occur every few pages really - The only thing I would mention is that I didn't feel like all the clues were quite at my grasp as they might have been - however, I didn't mind, it was such a rollicking good fun ride. Sometimes I wonder if I read these as mysteries or comedies - they are lovely as both. .

5 out of 5 stars Delicious.......2002-09-28

I was delighted with Cauldwell's third book in her too-short series. Much maligned Cantrip always makes me laugh, and you get plenty of him in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Pure delight.......2001-08-08

After the relatively disappointing second book in the series (The Shortest Way to Hades) I was enraptured to find The Sirens Sang of Murder on a par with the first Sarah Caudwell, the one that made me sing hosannas and rush out to buy everything she had written. One of the strengths and pleasures of Sirens, as with Thus Was Adonis Murdered, is that a large part of it takes the form of an epistolary novel, in this case through telexes in the hilarious voice of Cantrip. Surely Caudwell is a fan of P.G. Wodehouse, since the hapless Cantrip reminds me irresistibly of clueless Bertie Wooster, even down to his malapropisms and his dotty uncle (reminiscent of Uncle Fred). Having so many adventures related through his harried, well-intentioned, quirky voice ("pottle" is one of his favorite verbs) makes everything that much livelier. Another clever, enjoyable device is the use of hackneyed romance-novel cliches, which circulate due to Cantrip and Julia's collaboration on a would-be bestseller. Added to this heady mixture is the faintly dangerous, sexy whiff of witch lore and the supernatural.

If you enjoyed Thus Was Adonis Murdered, don't hesitate to heed the Sirens' seductive cry.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2000-10-19

The humor is elaborate and depends on convoluted witticisms couched in a pastiche of eighteenth century prose, alternating with sharp observations of contemporary British life and amazingly effective slapstick. This sort of thing has to be done superbly well or it falls flat. This is done superbly well. The plot seems completely fantastic until the murderer is revealed and you realise you should have thought of that person all along. The same setting as the other Caudwells - the London singles bar scene.

5 out of 5 stars The Cloak of the First Pilot .......2004-08-28

Maelstrom's Eye is the third book in the Cloakmaster Cycle series, which consists of six (6) books in total. Picking up from where Into the Void left off, the book continues to shed light on Teldin Moore and his ongoing quest to find out more about the magical cloak he carries a.k.a. "The Cloak of the First Pilot" and eventually be free of it.
The book does not waste time, instead it rushes to answer some of the questions that have been left lingering/unanswered from the first two books e.g. the changing of the cloak's colors, the ability to comprehend languages, the Reigar race to which the fallen she-captain from Beyond the Moons belonged and more...

This time round, Teldin has changed both physically and mentally; less trusting, longer hair, mustache etc
Ability-wise, he is maturing, becoming more and more experienced and able as a fighter as well as in learning the secrets of the cloak and thus better able at controlling and handling its immense power. He is able to cast Haste, Magic Missiles, and set up protective magical barriers among others.

The book opens with a bang, immediately catching the reader's interest and attention.
The amazing tour of the exotic Rock of Bral and the graphic way that Vorr dispatches the goodly party leave the reader enthralled! The book immediately becomes captivating, to the point that it cannot be easily put down.
The graphic slaughter of noble heroes is surely to get one's attention and develop hateful feelings towards the perpetrators.

The plot as a whole is excellent! The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Moreover, Roger Moore does a great job of presenting the distinct culture and civilization of the space faring peoples, especially the elves, the gnomes, and the scro. He has done a great deal of research in order to provide such an accurate and lucid description of these people.
Neogi, umber hulks, elves, gnomes, space battles, intrigue, betrayal, and swordfights are all about.
In addition, there are some new and interesting races/creatures like the Fal and the scro (space goblinoids) that really do spice up things.
Furthermore, there is a strong sense of Star Wars and Star Trek with the motley collection of aliens that one encounters in Wildspace and on the Rock of Bral in particular, though a map of the Rock would be extremely helpful.
Finally, it is truly wonderful to be provided with so much more information regarding the Spelljamming world.

On the negative side, there is still the question from the first book that is left unanswered as to why Teldin seemed as being a draconian to the draconians while at the SAME TIME as himself to his human companions (there must be some kind of magic from the School of Illusion at work that has not been explained). Hopefully this will be dealt with in one of the other books further down the line.

Secondly, a "charmed" Teldin could convince Aelfred to mutiny against his captain (Estriss) with little, almost no difficulty after 3 and a half years (!!!) service aboard the Probe, but he could not get him not to hire Gaye, the half-kender girl, whom he'd never met before as a new crew member! Hmm...

Thirdly, the gypsy-like half-kender is really not that great nor that interesting as a character and unless she has some kind of higher mission in the next book (s) there isn't really a good enough reason to have her included in the first place. As for the "relationship" that seems to be in the making...

Fourthly, the main villain, a scro general, is really too strong/powerful to the point that I don't really know if Teldin and company were up to the task of defeating him. (Gods DO NOT have 100% Magic resistance!) He wiped out a party made up of elves, dwarves and humans including priests, fighters, cavaliers and wizards without as much as breaking a sweat!

Finally, as to WHO and HOW succeeds in killing Vorr, the characterization "far fetched" is an understatement, if I ever saw one! (Unless again there is more than meets the eye that will be revealed down the line.)

Roger Moore does a FANTASTIC job of conveying the sheer power and evil of the Scro, especially after reading: "He buried bones that were burned, bones that were broken, bones that were gnawed upon."

In conclusion, my question is why did Roger Moore not write any more books along the lines of Maelstrom's Eye?

        4 out of 5 stars Maelstrom's Eye.......2003-07-23

Compared to any of the other books situated in the Dungeons and Dragons universes, I have enjoyed the Spelljammer stories quite thoroughly. I recommend this book highly to anyone that likes Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Darksun, Greyhawk, or Planescape.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful! The best installment in the series!.......2001-07-14

I warmly remember The Maelstrom's Eye as one of the best TSR-novels I read as a teen. Roger Moore gave his debut as a novelist, displaying a quite surprising talent for writing, given that he was primarily a game designer. He managed to elevate the up to then solid but not captivating Cloak Master Cycle to new heights, delivering a story as complex as it was intriguing. Elaine Cunningham came close to matching him in this, but after that, the series sadly dropped off. Don't miss the appearance of the dreaded space hamsters!

        5 out of 5 stars Reunions..........2001-03-17

These are the ONLY novels written before TSR cancelled the Spelljammer AD&D campaign:

In this, the third novel of a 6-part series, the main character (Teldin Moore, a native of Krynn, the Dragonlance world) meets with the Elven Imperial Navy to get help in determining the properties of his mysterious cloak, which is said to have ties to the Spelljammer ship itself.

As the story develops, he is emroiled in a conflict with the elves and the Scro, an intelligent orc race, who both want to obtain his cloak (as does an undead neogi). Along the way, he is reunited with a character from the first book (a hippo-man named Gomja) and is joined by a native of his homeworld, a female half-kender (as he would say, "Great Paladine!").

Well-written and in-depth, this continues the series of novels about the Cloakmaster. Each novel is written by a different TSR-native author. The story, so far, has meshed well and each author well-defines the broad scope of the unique Spelljammer setting.

This entire series must-buy for a fantasy fiction lover tired of the traditional "Earth-style pseudo-medievil world-walker" campaigns.

4 out of 5 stars Orcs backward? Luckily it improves from there........2000-02-10

A good fast paced book that keeps you guessing. I missed the first two in this series and this one just didn't flesh the main character, Teldin Moore out enough to really make you root for him. However, it was really nice to see a normal person fighting the good fight (Ahem, R. A. Salvatore take note,)all in all a very worthwhile read. I definitely want to see where Teldin and Gaye (a half-kender female - kind of kinky I'll admit)end up.

I purchased this book along with the Dr. Mercola book, based on a Amazon review of the Dr. Mercola book. It was a great choice - I would highly recommend Going Against the Grain to supplement Dr. Mercola's excellent book/cook book.

5 out of 5 stars This book will open your eyes.......2007-07-04

After reading this book and "dangerous Grains" My wife and I decided to go on a gluten free diet. Within 1 week my lower back pain and leg arthritis went completly away. Within 3 weeks my acid reflux went away. I had these pains since I was about 40 and began to dread getting older. Had acid Reflux since I was 50. I was 57 when I went on this diet and I am now 59 and feel like I'm 35 again. My wife had more severe symptoms like head and feet sores for many years without relief from our local skin doctors. She was also semi diagnosed with Lupus symptoms from our local Rheumatologist. She has been symptom free for 2 years now with no thanks to the medical profession. Your going to want to read the book. I sent both books to each of my family members; now its there choice.

            5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-05-11

I found this book to be a life saver. After many years of not knowing quite what was wrong with me (bloating, mood swings, fuzzy thinking, weight gain, intestinal cramping, cravings, tiredness, the list goes on)I now have an answer - I am wheat/gluten/dairy sensitive.

I've been on this diet just a short time and I already feel like a new person. No pills or gimmicks involved, only changing your diet and eating healthy. I can think clearly, I don't have the daily bloat, cravings for sweets or that tired run down feeling I used to get.

Pick up the book and see for yourself.

            3 out of 5 stars Grainy picture.......2007-04-17

A really good explanation of how grains, particularly the gluten grains affect practically everyone. Even more insightful is that disorders can be outwardly symptomless!! The only problem in avoiding grains the author recommends eating animal products and some veg but no mention of fruit. Personally I feel this strategy will cause one to potentially swap one set of troubles for another by chowing down on meat and dairy. Please please read Grain Damage by Doug Graham. Gain exceptional health, lead an exceptional life.

4 out of 5 stars a clarification for the negative reviews.......2006-12-27

All of the negative reviews of this book seem to share the same confusion so I thought I should clarify the misunderstanding. Of course whole-grained diets are healthy for you, IF YOU ARE NOT ALLERGIC TO THEM. The epidemic this book and others like it is discussing is the large percentage of people who are allergic to wheat/barley/oats or have celiac disease who are unaware that this is even possible. When these people eat wheat products, their immune system produces IgG antibodies to the wheat as it mistakenly believes that the wheat is a foreign invader. Continuous high levels of IgG antibodies in the body wreak havoc and cause numerous symptoms from migraines to arthritis. This information is supported by scientific literature. A person can be tested for antibodies to common food allergens to definitively proove if they are experiencing a food allergy. The author also discusses that oftentimes the foods we are allergic to are the ones that we eat almost obsessively. Often people with wheat allergies are carb junkies. This is because when the body has an allergic reaction, it secretes endorphins that the body can actually become addicted to so your body craves the things that are harming you. I have personal experience with wheat, and other food, allergens that caused me to develop what looked like rheumatoid arthritis at age 25. When I altered my diet based on IgG testing my symptoms disappeared. I am not some far out spacy hippy or some pop science junkie, I am a student at a US medical school on my way to being an MD. I have read the literature that supports these theories and understand the science that they are based on. There are many MDs who support this theory and utilize it to help their patients. If you suffer from the symptoms that are described in this book, it is worth while to try an elimination diet or get IgG testing. If you do not have allergies then of course whole grains (not the bleached out proccessed crap that most americans eat) are an extremely healthy part of a balanced diet.

Being the parent of a food allergic child, I truly appreciate what Ms. Webster was trying to do in preparing this cookbook. However, I have not used this cookbook once in the past 7 months that I have owned it. Why not? Because I either did not need a recipe to make the food (such as Garlic Butter, Strawberry Topping for Waffles, Pancakes & Sorbets, Tempting Tacos, etc.) or could find a similar recipe in any all-purpose/non-allergy cookbook (Fresh Salsa, Guacamole, Oven Fries, Apple Pie, etc.).

If a food allergic person/parent did not know anything about cooking or own any cookbooks, perhaps this cookbook would be satisfactory. Even then, I believe that money would be better spent on a good all-purpose cookbook making obvious substitutions (safe margarine for margarine/butter, alternative milk for cow's milk, etc.) If truly looking for an allergy cookbook for some of the more challenging allergy baking, I would reccommend The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook by Cybele Pascal or What's to Eat? by Linda Cross.

5 out of 5 stars My son loves these recipes!.......2006-04-27

Just wanted to give a positive review for this book. Honestly the book isn't that pretty inside (black and white photos). The cover of the book looks wonderful however and shows some of the great recipes the book has to offer.

My son is very picky in what he eats. Being picky combined with food allergies does not mix well because he can only eat certain foods. Well this book does an amazing job at making snacks and meals that my son loves.

Just wanted to give thanks to the author. Its hard for a parent to cope with these allergies in their child. I am thankful that books like this are out there. It is informative and helps ensure my child is not eating something he shouldn't.

I was furious when I found out what they were using in the McDonalds Fries, My son ate those on multiple occasions because I thought they were safe. Who could have known??? Im sure your son is very happy with all the food he gets to test :-)

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing. Nothing new here if you already know how to cook........2006-04-18

What a waste of money! If you already know how to cook...you have most likely already discovered these recipes on your own. Come on! How to make garlic butter, BLT's, and strawberry topping for pancakes? Making a chocolate shake by blending together chocolate syrup, milk subsitute and soy ice cream sandwiches? I think not. This cookbook should be revised with picture directions and marketed as a children's allergy-free cookbook. I would have done better searching for allergy-free recipes with a good internet search engine. Try the recipe collections from Theresa Kingma (www.tkkingma@netzero.net) or What's to Eat by Linda Marienhoff Coss for more useful material to feed your family. Don't waste your money on this one.

            5 out of 5 stars Parents- Relax!.......2006-04-02

Leave it to a devoted mother of a child with food allergies to bring a helpful tool like this book to other parents!

Penny does a great job offering tasty, creative meals. "Little Buddy's Shake" is sure to be a favorite among all!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book of Hope and Help.......2006-02-16

What a wonderful book of hope and help!
It has been tremendous to have a resource available when I've entertained friends with allergies. Recently I was blown away by the gratitude I received from a Mom who brought her son (who has several allergies) to my daughters birthday party. The entire menu was dairy, nut and egg free and on top of that was "yummy" and fun for everyone! The Mom was able to relax and enjoy herself. I feel like I was able to encourage someone, but I couldn't have done it without "Allergy Free For All Ages"

1 out of 5 stars Excellent example of incompetence.......1999-08-16

So-called "historic reviews" is awful. For example - on page 156 we can read: "In 1810, King Louis XVII of France appointed Breguet as Watchmaker to the Royal French Navy". Did you hear about Napoleon I? Sophie Ann Terrisse (editor of the book) no. For editor information - Louis XVI were executed much earlier 1810 and next Louis XVIII claimed as King in 1814. Louis XVII never was as King in fact.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to my book collection.......1999-04-11

This is by far the most attractive book on watches that I have read to date. It is somewhat wider than most books so ensure you have a deep bookshelf. The photographs are of the highest quality and the editorial is well written and researched. This book is not a technical manual, it is a collectors book that portrays the most beautiful examples of the watchmaking tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to fascinating timepieces.......1999-03-21

One of the best books to start learning about watchmaking. A great introduction, easy-to-read, well-documented and graphically stunning. Perfect as a coffee table book to keep around or as a gift to those who need to be initiated.

                    1 out of 5 stars I can't recommend this book at all........1999-02-14

Glossy pictures, looks more like a picture book, a little bit of history of some companies, absolutely no in depth information, almost no information about movements. I regret that I wasted my money on this 'book'.

"Watches..." was about, well, watches. Time dragged as I read this bland book--the literary equivalent of puffed rice. I actually threw my watch away after reading this.

2 out of 5 stars bad translation of italian editor.......1998-09-28

none only this compilation is constantly outdated (the collection showed are in fact the one showed at the basel fair 2 years before) but the lay out and design is desesperatly poor of creativity and boring article about the companies full of typos. Obviously somebody is trying to make money on the back of the fascinating watch world.

3 out of 5 stars Good but incomplete reference.......1998-08-24

This is a good reference book for anyone starting out collecting or just interested in watches. The pictures are nice and glossy and it also has pictures of the movements. Not a lot of history of the various manufactures although it does list most all the major companies. I would have liked to see more information on recent models; it appears the book has not been updated in the last two or three years. Definitely lacking was any listing of vintage models from the various manufactures. Overall very good but incomplete.

Great pictures and details of watch movements and materials, usually with prices. A must for any collector or even someone looking for that one of a kind piece that may suit their needs. Only drawbacks - Some of the newer, what I consider high end brands are not included and the extra leaflet that comes with it shows no prices. More or less useless (leaflet only) unless you are rich and don't care about cost. I don't credit any of these problems to the publisher/author. The industry is fast paced and I am impressed they have as much info as they have. I Call it "My bible towatches" (with minor exceptions

This book is an excellent source for anyone wanting to start from scratch on gardening. I am a very visual person, and the pictures of plants and illustrations on how to plant make this book excellent! The book I got is hard-back so I know it will last a long time!

It's a great book as it covers subjects from planting, caring for, and choosing which plants will do well. The book also covers Texas' bugs (which we have plenty of) and pest control. Garrett is my gardening guru in Texas...but if you have his previous books, then this will look like a review.

                        Book Description

This book presents an historical overview of the Frankish realms in Central Europe during the Carolingian period. Against this background Part II of the book examines the cultural inventory deposited by the scribal culture in Central Europe as represented by manuscripts, crystals, ivories and gem encrusted liturgical art. Part III deals with such examples of Carolingian wall painting and architecture as are still evident in Central Europe. Though some examples are derivative, many are original. To reflect the splendor of the objects and surfaces discussed in Parts II and III, the book is lavishly ornamented with pertinent color illustrations. Black and white illustrations generally serve the representation of architecture.

This exciting new title is destined to become the classic visual study of digital type design. The author surveys and categorizes digital faces and fonts from over thirty foundries and individuals. Showcasing and analyzing the most innovative typefaces, this book essentially becomes an artifact in itself.

Definitely one for the studio library. It reminds me of what lengths designers go to in their designing type ... awesome. Thoroughly used as a resource book. Book Description

When Sara Wise first looked into the big brown eyes of the severely retarded eight-year-old boy strapped into a car seat like a toddler, she thought, "What have I gotten myself into?" Scottie was a toddler in every way except his size and age. She was at the beginning of a faith adventure that would change her life and many other lives in a profound way. Despite her fears and concerns, Sara persevered to obey the small, still voice in her spirit that she knew was her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her obedience has resulted in a church ministry that reaches out to the Virginia Peninsula and into many other churches in Virginia and other states.
