Book Description

If only I hadn't kidnapped the dog...but the ransom paid the mortgage....Now I seem to be a private eye....I shouldn't have listened to that ghost....

Meet Sarah Booth Delaney...an unconventional Southern belle whose knack for uncovering the truth is about to make her the hottest detective in Zinnia, Mississippi...if it doesn't make her the deadest.

No self-respecting lady would allow herself to end up in Sarah Booth's situation. Unwed, unemployed, and over thirty, she's flat broke and about to lose the family plantation. Not to mention being haunted by the ghost of her great-great-grandmother's nanny, who never misses an opportunity to remind her of her sorry state--or to suggest a plan of action, like ransoming her friend's prize pooch to raise some cash.

But soon Sarah Booth's walk on the criminal side leads her deeper into unladylike territory, and she's hired to solve a murder. Did gorgeous, landed Hamilton Garrett V really kill his mother twenty years ago? And if so, what is Sarah Booth doing falling for this possible murderer? When she asks one too many questions and a new corpse turns up, she is suddenly a suspect herself...and Sarah Booth finds that digging up the bones of the past could leave her rolling over in her grave.

2 out of 5 stars Shows some promise but not great.......2007-09-01

The writer seems new to her craft. She is very weak on plot development. I will purchase others in the series to see if the books improve; however, if the books continue in this vein, I can't recommend them. I like the beginnings of the main character but feel that her haunting by an ex-slave is ridiculous. The ghost is shallow and is bizarrely obsessed with Sarah Booth getting pregnant.

3 out of 5 stars A better general interest novel than a mystery.......2005-04-05

I liked this book, but I don't feel like I have to absolutely get something else from Ms. Haines.

This book is strong on characterization, setting and weak on plot. I liked Sarah, I adored Jitty. "Them Bones" is well-written, provides a unique atmosphere and represents a strange cross between social commentary and a mystery. The social commentary part is the more interesting of the two. What Daddy's girls are brought up to be, the struggle between individuality and tradition in the suffocating grip of fixed gender roles, and the sordid details of people's lives coming to light from under the glamorous, glossy surface of society living are far more interesting than the unlikely criminals we are treated to in this novel.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious, wicked entertainment. I loved it!.......2004-05-09

I'm hooked. Until 2 weeks ago, I'd never read Ms Haines. Now I'm a devoted fan. Her mysteries are simply delicious reading. As someone who's lived in and around the area, I find her characterizations dead-on accurate, and her locale descriptions evocative enough to lure me back. Whoever thought I'd miss kudzu? Sarah Booth Delaney is a pure delight, and someone I'd love to sit down and have a glass of Jack with... I hope this series never ends! It'd be like losing a good friend.

5 out of 5 stars This would be a terrific book even without the mystery!.......2004-04-19

The book has so much literary merit, that it could be placed among the novels. However, the excellent mystery plot also wins it a place among the mysteries.

Haines creates characters who are memorable and vivid and places them in the Mississippi Delta town of Zinnia (I'm kind of reminded of the movie "In the Heat of the Night"). Sarah Booth is living in the ancestral home -- she is an orphan and an only child, the last of the Delaneys -- but is about to lose it, because she is destitute despite her social credentials. Her only company at Dahlia House - the antebellum house -- is the ghost of a slave, who appears in a variety of outfits and "encourages" Sarah to get to work reproducing.

In an attempt to earn some money, Sarah takes on the task of trying to get to the truth of a scandal from 20 years ago in which first a leading citizen and then the leading citizen's wife die in some very questionable accidents. THe two young offspring are whispered to have something to do with it, and Sarah's client wants to find out if Hamilton the Fifth is as bad as rumors have it. Hamilton the Fifth is a romantic interest worthy of Evanovich -- and did I mention the book is often funny?

Sarah is stirring up some dangerous memories and some deaths start to follow.

I really loved this book and can hardly wait to read the next in this series and discover what happens to Sarah.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a silly ghost story.......2002-03-18

I decided to try this series based on the reviews of other readers and am glad I did. I too thought this might turn out to be another attempt at the zany humor so many try, but few accomplish (Janet Evanovich and Nancy Bartholomew being the few exceptions). The conversations between Jitty and Sarah Booth are funny at times, but what I like the most is being able to not only feel Sarah Booth's love for her home, which goes deeper than just a place to live, but also that there probably really is a Zinnia with people just like that. I read someone comparing Sarah Booth to Sharon McCone and, I agree -- a softer cousin maybe. The second in the series is just as good and I'm looking forward to reading the 3rd.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of paper.......2005-08-13

Of all the McCaffrey novels I have read, this one is a total waste of time to read. This book is only worth anything to a compleatist fan who has to have every thing she's written.
I have 1000+ SF/Fantasy books in my personal library and only a rare few are of such dubious quality that I have re-sold them to a used book store or amazon.com's Marketplace.....this book is one of those rare few.
The plot is not well-developed, and quite contrived. It reads like something a grade school wannabee would turn into their teacher.....To me it seems that Kilgore Trout spent more time writing 'Venus On The Half Shell' (7 days BTW, and it's funny and good) than McCaffrey did on this piece of dreck.

1 out of 5 stars lame.......2005-08-12

this book had some potential but it was a silly romance dressed up as a fantasy. And are you kidding me about the Coelura, fancy little creatures that create pretty clothes? come on, now. Anyway I was disappointed but i guess this was a quick right to publish something and the sequal "Nerilka's story" wasn't much better.

4 out of 5 stars A Charming Little Tale By a Great Author!.......2004-04-29

Lady Caissa, heir to the Ambassador of the Federated Sentient Planets to the world Demeathorn, has had duty and loyalty drilled into her since she was a young girl. Her father expects her to follow his dictates unquestioningly, even though Caissa has long since passed her childhood and is now ready for her first marriage contract. For the first time, Caissa rebels against her father's wishes and refuses to marry the boorish Gustin, heir to the Cavernus fortune and a good political ally for her father. Caissa's father doesn't understand why she cannot just endure the year-long contract marriage, beget a child and be done with it, but Caissa's heart rebels at such a cold-blooded contract. Upset and unsure of what she will do, Caissa decides to take her cruiser for a spin and hopefully hunt off some of her frustration.

Before too long Caissa realizes that she foolishly forgot to check her cruiser's solar panels and that she will run out of power before she can return to the city. She intends to fly back as far as she can and then camp and wait for the sun's rise the next day when she picks up a weak distress signal coming from the forbidden zone. When she responds, she finds the most beautiful man she has ever seen. Murell doesn't trust her, but he is wounded and his antique flyer is beyond his repair skills. Despite some suspicion on both sides, they soon find that there is a strong, instantaneous attraction between them, but what kind of future can they have? Caissa dares to dream that somehow, someway they can be together for longer, but when Murell discovers who her father is, he leaves. For Murell knows that Caissa's father will do anything to capture one of the elusive, mythical coelura - the very creatures that he has sworn to protect...

The Coelura is a wonderful little story by a talented author. It is only 150 pages and the type is quite large, but I felt that I knew the characters quite well and the plot was simple enough that there were no loose ends left at the ending. However, I did feel that the story could have been fleshed out into a full-size novel and felt cheated at the brevity of the tale because I did like the characters and would have enjoyed learning more about the planet and its customs. Still, McCaffrey is a skillful author that I always enjoy reading and the book has several wonderful black and white drawings to go along with the text, which I really enjoyed. This book would be a good science fiction novel to start off teen readers or for older readers who are just looking for a short, simple tale to pass the time.

4 out of 5 stars Wish it were longer.......2001-12-28

I wish this book had been a full length novel -- with sequels!!! The book "Coelura" was so good,I couldn't put it down.I only wish that there had been more of it and that Anne McCaffrey had decided to make it into a series!

5 out of 5 stars I wish this book were longer..........2001-08-21

Written as a novella (a cross between a novel and a short-story) the biggest problem with this book is that it's too short. The Coelura is well written with a great plot, but I want to see more. Perhaps someday Anne will continue this story. Anne did eventually write more about this particular "universe" in "Nimisha's Ship", but set far into the future.

3 out of 5 stars A very helpful book for any parent of a child with ADD/ADHD.......2001-05-24

This book is a very good "first book" to start with if you are researching how to help your child. It is written in simple terms that parents can understand. It gives helpful tips on setting up your child's environment in order to help them be more successful. I have read many books on this subject, and this is a staple book for any parent of a child with ADD/ADHD.

                    5 out of 5 stars The ADD/ADHD Checklist.......2000-02-06

This is an excellent, reader-friendly guide to ADD/ADHD. It is useful for parents and teachers alike, an it allows the reader to get answers to their questions quickly by simply looking through the detailed subject index to their specific issue. Topics like medication alternatives, specific approaches for parents, educational guidelines, and teaching strategies are but a few of the topics covered in this book. As an educator with experience dealing with ADHD children, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Parent friendly, excellent parenting guidelines.......2000-01-27

I picked up this book in order to research ADD/ADHD in response to my child's teachers suggestions that he may be such a child. This book is written in such clear terms that it de-mystifies this all enveloping area. It contains simple to follow checklists. But it's best feature for parents are the numerous suggestions for supporting your child at home and at school. I felt enpowered by it to gain help for my child who is possibly borderline ADD, but to me seems like a regular boy who does not like putting much effort into school work and resents homework. The label ADD is frightening, but by no means suggests that your child should be medicated. This book supported my search for alternatives.

                    Book Description

The simple and exciting recipes in Cruising Cuisine--everything from crowd-pleasing appetizers to tempting sauces and sinful desserts--are fresh, modern, healthful, and tailored to save cruisers time, energy, and effort. Here are more than 450 recipes for all gastronomical persuasions: Pear Crepes, Apple Pancakes, Porcini Mushroom Dip, Conch Fritters, Curried Rock Scallops, Basque-Style Chicken and Sausage, Orzo with Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Stir-Fried Thai Chicken in Coconut Sauce. All are far removed from the crunchy-granola, freeze-dried, "open a can of this and add it to a can of that" school of boat cooking.

Kay Pastorius lays out numerous techniques around which the cruising chef can improvise, using what's on hand. She offers tips on how to set up and customize a galley: Did you know, for example, that a wok is ideal for cooking aboard because it makes economic use of whichever heat source you use? And she provides advice on how to stock provisions and deal with supermarket-separation syndrome: how to use fresh ingredients to supplement onboard staples; how to cook your catch; and how to shop for fresh (and safe) local produce, meat, and fish wherever you drop anchor, even in the markets typical of popular cruising stops in Mexico, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific.

I absolutely love this cookbook because it is simple and no-nonsense but yet full of very nice and tasty recipes. What I personally like best about this book is that often you'll find a base recipe for i.e. cookie dough, souffle, pancakes, you name it and then has several different flavour variations. So one dish, many different flavours. Too easy!! I am going sailing soon and have been assigned to the cooking - this will be my bible as we travel... ;-)

We had heard about this book while in St. Maarten and finally found it at a swap meet in Trinidad. Many sea miles later, it's still our cookbook of choice. So many other cruising cookbooks left out ingredients, had typos, or had such elaborate preparation steps that you could never make the recipes unless you had a full-sized, professional kitchen. This book is perfect. Simple, yet delicious recipes that can be make quickly (and without leaving an oven on for hours in the tropics). We especially found the appetizer section helpful when we were low on happy hour ideas.

We were only a month or so into our cruise having left San Francisco in 1998. We met Kay and Hal at the always helpful & friendly DOWNWIND MARINE in San Diego. I bought the book thinking that I would need some help, especially in our tiny galley. It's been 2 years since we left. Most of it spent cruising the Calif. Coast and Mexico. I've really grown to depend of Kay's book for ideas, tips, ingredients and combinations. Even for ideas for the odd fish that was the only thing available! Thanks for such a comprehensive and great cookbook written especially for cruisers!

                    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for those working any galley.......2001-06-21

This book is essential reading for anyone working in the galley - whether blue water, bay or lake cruising. The recipes are outstanding, easy to follow and amenable to tight quarters. More importantly, Kay Pastorius offers advice about the basics that most of us have to learn the hard way - by throwing rotting food away. Her advice about provisioning, storage and cooking is right on the money, literally. I only wish my boat-mate, a meat-and-potatoes guy (who I wouldn't trade for the world), was as enthusiastic and supportive as Hal. Thank you Kay.

Being landlocked for 50 weeks out of the year does little in stopping my efforts in looking for the perfect cookbook for the open seas. I've finally found a must for my galley.

"Cruising Cuisine" is well laid out and has easy to follow recipes with an inventory list to help you pick and choose the spices you may need on board. The many tips on preparing and storage come in handy and go far in helping you prepare for your voyage, long or short.

This by no means is just for the sea, but at home as well. With more than 450 recipes your family and friends will be anxiously awaiting new culinary treats to be transformed from black and white text to mouth watering morsels of enjoyment!

Red sky at night - sailors delight, red sky in the morning, sailors - batten down the hatches and head to the galley to prepare hot soup and a hearty stew. Your crew and their friends will thank you!

                    Book Description

Simultaneously affectionate and suspicious, adaptive and intractable, dependent and aloof, cats are the least tamed and yet the most successful domestic species. Drawing upon new research into cat genetics, brain chemistry, evolution, social behavior, and interaction with humans and fellow felines, acclaimed author and scientist Stephen Budiansky explores the mysteries of these amazing creatures. Wide-ranging, lively, and engaging, The Character of Cats also covers the full spectrum of feline fact and lore, from history, superstition, and religious imagery to hunting patterns, sexual behavior, and preferred colors. This smart, wonderfully readable book finally gives cats their due.

This book is chock full of amazing and insightful cat lore. While I'm sure that I may have been able to read much of what was in this book elsewhere, it provides an excellent summary and review of what man knows about those amazing cats that have followed us through the ages. The author provides all of this info through very conversational and often humorous text that was very easy to read. I found myself laughing out loud as well as nodding in agreement as I suddenly understood more of why my cat's are the way they are.

Speaking as a scientist myself I think it is also a robust and well-researched piece. In the back you'll find a very long list of citations to scientific work. While it may not be perfect and may not have all the answers it's clear that the author took a lot of time to try to get things right and to present as clear and accurate of a picture as possible.

2 out of 5 stars Elementary and bland.......2005-01-14

I picked up this book under the impression that some of the quirky things my cats do might be explained and substantiated. I wanted to learn more about their thought processes and evolutionary background. Overall, this book did not live up to my expectations.

Stephen Budiansky starts off the book with an interesting historical perspective on cats. He also briefly describes some evolutionary background as well as close relatives to Felis silvestris catus, body color patterns, and similarities and differences between feral and domesticated cats. From there, Budiansky delves into the behavior patterns of cats and their various personalities. He discusses things such as low-light vision in cats, the odd reactions some cats have to cat nip, the tendency to mark territory, the tendency to eat plants, and learning capabilities. He also gives some descriptions of what might be done to discourage unwanted behavior in your pets, which is probably the most beneficial aspect of the book (except for the fact that one of his suggestions is prescribed drugs).

Budiansky covers a vast plethora of information within this book, however, none if it is really described in very much depth. Furthermore, I found it extremely discouraging that much of the behavior described in this book seems to be mere observations made by Budiansky without much (or, at times, any) explanation, and is only rarely backed by scientific studies. Much of the knowledge presented in this book is general information that anyone who has owned cats for any length of time, and paid any attention to their behavior, should already be aware of. Frequently Budiansky writes off various cat behaviors by merely stating "it's hard-wired in their brain." As a biology major, I found these explanations to be extremely elementary and quite lacking.

In addition, this book was just a bland read. Though I was determined to get through it, it has taken me a couple of months of picking it up and reading a couple of pages at a time before I had to put it down and save it for another day. If anything, this book might be used as a jumping off point from which to determine what aspects of cats you might want to research in more depth, since Budiansky barely glosses over the surface of everything he discusses (how much detail can he really get into in only 201 pages?).

As someone who has been a cat owner for about seventeen years now, I didn't feel that this book added much to my knowledge of cats, and would thus not recommend this book to those who own cats and are already familiar with their behavior. If you aren't a cat owner and are interested in the quirky cuteness that is Felis silvestris, then this might be more worthwhile.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the casual reader.......2004-11-12

The subtitle is a very good indication of the flavor of the book. It includes the Latin name of the species Felis silvestris catus. What follows is more of a highly scientific analysis of cats than a guide to understanding your pet. The generally pratical information is scant and overwhelmed by massive digressions in evolutionary and historical explainations. I got to page 100 and couldn't bear to read any more.

5 out of 5 stars If you're going to read one book about cats, let THIS be it!.......2004-09-09

I've read dozens of books about cats, but this is the one I won't be re-selling on Amazon after having read it. Rarely does a book deal strictly with FACTS while also providing insightful and intriguing information. From the history of cats worldwide (I didn't know that brown tabbies like mine are commonplace in England) to easy-to-understand genetic basics (why orange tabbies are usually male) to clarification of fact vs. fallacy (a declawed cat may not be any more prone to behavioral problems than any non-declawed cat), this book takes solid research and translates it into fascinating, readable stuff. Best of all, the author's style is delightfully conversational, quite easy to read, and occasionally has me laughing out loud!

If you're looking for an author's first-person diatribe about what his cat did last Tuesday and how cute he is under the Christmas tree, this isn't the book for you. But if you want a book that teaches you more than you ever expected to know about our feline friends -- without making it tedious or hard to read -- THIS is the book you want.

Here is the first book to highlight the gorgeous decorated satin glassware produced by Factories D, G, and K of the United States Glass Company during the 1920s. This book was very helpful in giving me ideas to share with others, and use with my own children. As a creator of garden based characters, I particularly enjoyed the background information for some of the common herbs and flowers. For instance I had no idea that Dill seeds were called 'meeting seeds' as on long church services (meetings) the early colonists would chew on dill seeds to stay awake.

MUCH fun was found in this book and it was very helpful to me!

5 out of 5 stars Delightful multidimensional book...........2007-06-14

I bought this book as a gift and I am delighted with it. Many books I see for kids are lacking in one or more respects, this book is a clean sweep on every front i.e. well-organized, accurate content, meaningful activities, good cartoons and lots of interesting facts about plants.

The book covers the history and folklore of common vegetables and fruits, various activities that teach principles and appreciate for how plants do what they do and many indoor growing experiments that educate. It even includes sections on raising earthworms, pill bugs, snails and information about growing herbs.

One nice feature of the book is the presentation of provocative questions about plants that are then answered in the text or must be answered through an experiment of some sort. This is top-notch material, even the illustrations are excellent.

Although I believe this book is recommended for children 4-8, I think it is probably more appropriate for 6-12. It is certainly fine for even a very intelligent and motivated 10 year old.

Lesley Tierra's book is just as the subtitle suggests, "for children of all ages." This fantastic herbal showcases 16 commonly used medicinal plants that could realistically form the core of a home herbal pharmacy. It is truly a great introduction to the world of herbs.

I adore Tierra's original stories for each herb which will stretch children's imaginations while connecting them deeper to the spirit of each plant. Lesley pays special attention to warnings where indicated, explains specific doses for children, and includes a convenient quick guide to treating illnesses (matching symptoms with herbal remedy).

Beautiful drawings adorn nearly every page of this book bringing each and every page to life. As an adult I appreciate the visual aspect, so I can only imagine that children will fall for them too - maybe even color in some of the bigger pictures adding an artistic element to the book itself.

Tierra's includes sing-along songs for each herb (with accompanying sheet music), as well as a vast array of crafts, projects, activities and herbal recipes. This author hasn't left anything out, and it doesn't surprise me knowing her background and the 15 years spent researching this book. Tierra is a nationally renowned practicing herbalist with family and friends in the herb world, many of whom somehow contributed to this book.

The thing that really stood out for me about "A Kid's Herb Book" is the way the author attempts to connect the reader (parents, children, and ultimately, that inner child within all of us) with the amazing life force found in herbs. This book is a timely bridge that serves to unite the heart of each reader with the natural world in fun, useful, creative and joy-filled ways. I feel that this is what makes "A Kid's Herb Book" unique in comparison to many other herb books on the shelves today.

I found this from an EarthWalk class that I sometimes volunteer for. A 4th grader showed this book to her teacher who in turn showed it to us. I wrote down the name and bought it a few days later. Why? Because it is really informative and done really really well. I'm new to the whole outdoor, edible herb thing so I feel like I could use a kid's book to help teach me (it even has sections for me to color!) :-)

5 out of 5 stars I finally found a great introductions to herbs!.......2006-08-21

First let me say that I am 28. A friend and I bought this book for ourselves, as we have no children. Both of us have always been interested in learning more about herbs, but had found most herb books a bit confusing when you have no real knowledge base to begin with. We started reading this and loved it.

The explanations of the herbs are basic, yet tell you everything you need to know. We loved that the illustrations of the herbs told you what colors to use when you colored them in, and the stories were great at helping us to remember the main use of an herb.

I am now regularly using most of the herbs covered in the book and have started using other books and adding to my knowlege.

If you want to learn about herbs, still like to play and learn like a child then you will really enjoy this book. You really don't need kids to need this book!

5 out of 5 stars Children's Choice Award for 2006.......2006-04-17

I am happy to announce that the following titles have been selected for the Children's Choice award for 2006:

1.) Arlene Erlbach and Herbert Erlbach's Thanksgiving Day Crafts

Please note: Children's Choices is a selection by 10,000 school children (2,000 in each of five different geographic locations) of their favorite books published each year. The selections are announced and displayed at the IRA National Convention each May. The annotated list will appear in the October issue of the IRA journal The Reading Teacher.

                            Congratulations to everyone!

                                      Book Description

This book explores the dynamics of the commentary and textbook traditions in Aristotelian natural philosophy under the headings of doctrine, method, and scientific and social status. It enquires what the evolution of the Aristotelian commentary tradition can tell us about the character of natural philosophy as a pedagogical tool, as a scientific enterprise, and as a background to modern scientific thought. In a unique attempt to cut old-fashioned historiographic divisions, it brings together scholars of ancient, medieval, Renaissance and seventeenth-century philosophy. The book covers a remarkably broad range of topics: it starts with the first Greek commentators and ends with Leibniz.

                                                Book Description

This is the story of a young Italian Jew who in 1938 in response to the enactment by the Fascist government of antisemitic legislation decided that he should leave his comfortable home in Milano with his mother and sister and seek refuge first in England and later in the United States. However, as the result of Italy's entry in the war, he faced unexpected obstacles and real dangers. On June 11, 1940 when he was ready to board the Britannic and sail to New York from Liverpool, he was arrested as an enemy alien. A few days laer he was shipped behind barbed wire across the Atlantic, then infested with German U boats, interned in Canada for fourteen months as a prisoner of war. Eventually his status as a "refugee" was recognized by the British Government but legal technicalities prevented his immigration to the US from Canada and imposed a detour to Cuba. Finally after a long wait and with the sponsorship of Arturo Toscanini he was able to rejoin his mother and sister in New York just a few days before Pearl Harbor.
