Encouraging words when I needed them .......2006-03-09

I found "Being Black:Zen and the Art of Living with Fearlessness and Grace" to be exactly what the doctor ordered.
The Book is written in a language that is clear,to the point, and easy to understand. Free from the "psycho-babble" that some books on Buddhism tend to be bogged down with, 'Being Black..." is written in such a way that I felt the author empathized with other Black people who find themselves alone on the Buddhist path and in life.
Sharing in the problems we as Black people sometimes face in our family and social settings.Touching on the negative self talk that we sometimes indulge in.Showing how we can be our own worst enemies at times.
Don't get me wrong-anyone and just about everyone can benefit from reading this book, regardless of race or spiritual path.
It teaches,inspires,comforts,and is even entertaining in some parts.
I highly recommend this book to all who are on a spiritual quest to improve their lives.

A rare glimpse into the heart of a woman........2003-04-07

Rarely are we able to look into the life of a person who is as honest and sincere in the telling of their story. This book goes far beyond the how to of ZEN and fixes its sights on the why. She manags to articulate her defining moments and bring the reader in to draw parallels in their own experience. I literally laughed and cried throughout this book. It is not often that we are able to see a black person in their full spectrum of human being. This book is in direct contrast of popular cultures simplification of the African American.
A Mexican-American male's perspective

a white male perspective.......2002-04-26

This is an insightful and beautifully written book about the mystery and challenge of being. It is eloquent and readable, full of both wonder and clarity. I have bought copies for my 2 daughters, as high school and college graduation presents. Deepest thanks to Ms. Williams for gifting us with such a special, insightful "guidebook" for the warrior spirit in all of us.

Spiritual Awakening.......2001-06-27

The book was a gift in every way. Ms. Williams has demystified the East and made Zen down to Earth. As an African- American woman, I've been searching in vain for a spiritual home. Thanks to Ms. Williams, I think that I've found one. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for guidance on her/his spritual path.

Zen Can Demystify Even Being Black in America.......2000-12-04

Being an over 40 African American male dipping and dabbing in Zen for several years I read with Ms. Williams book with pride and anticipation, not to mention a small bit of skepticism. My skepticism being, how could she focus on being Black and still be true to Zen belief? But just as I thought, being Black had to take a back seat to her Zen way of life and principles. Ms. Williams did a great job in keeping the focus on the fact that she was a Black Woman mostly through pass experiences and tribulations. Responding to events with the knowledge and wisdom she possessed during that time in her life.

After a few chapters it became evident that she realized the time had come in her life to move beyond the personal heartache of racism and injustice in America. That Zen could allow her to be in it, but not of it. Minimizing the sting and ugliness of racism from a purely personal phenomenon to a universal sickness in the one. No longer being totally consumed, but living a wisdom that is much greater then the screen or projector. She did a wonderful job of introducing Zen in a basic and simple manner. A format that should help African Americans or anyone else that is looking for a path.

I rated this book a 3 only because I had read the outcome before opening the cover. The outcome being that yeah we can talk about Blackness and the hardships endured, but once introduced to the wisdom of Zen. You have no choice but to move the debate from the centricity of I to the universality of we.

Ms. Williams keep up the good work and I pray and meditate that the African American Zen community continues to grow.

Good Starter Book For Guppy Caring.......2003-04-26

This book does lean heavily toward being a brochure for "Gan Aquarium Fish Farm" in Singapore who provided the majority of the guppy photos. It is still a worthwhile book if you are starting out with setting up an aquarium and wish to pursue raising guppies. The author covers all the basics such as the tank setup, water quality, heating, feeding and even breeding. Note the book is only 64 pages and is a quick and easy read for beginners and does cover all the necessary aspects of caring for guppies.

Great For Beginners.......2003-04-18

I found this book to be most helpful in setting up an aquarium and maintaining water quality. It also gives great tips and insight into what look for in keeping your guppy healthy and with breeding. The color photographs were a great tool. The book was not too advanced and never got too technical like others I've read.

Don't buy this book!.......2002-05-14

Only buy this book if you want to see pictures of Guppies raised by the Gan Fish Farm in Singapore. Of 55 pictures of Guppies in this book, 35 are Gan Fish and 17 are from some guy named Tanaka. That leaves only 3 pictures of other guppies. This book should have been a sales brochure for Gan and Tanaka. None of the Guppy pictures are of more recent and nicer looking strains that you see out there, at least in my opinion. In addition, the information in the book is better covered in some of the guppy web pages. Good thing I only paid [$] for a used book.

An Outstanding Book!.......2005-08-24

I'm not truly a peanuts collector per se...I don't pursue any item I can find depicting the Charles Schulz characters. But I am a big Peanuts fan and I do collect certain items such as holiday themed items and other odds and ends. There are a few other Peanuts guides out there but I think this is the best. It lists over 2000 items with over 1000 photographs. In somewhat unique fashion the author has categorized the items by the room in your home where you would find these pieces. In case that doesn't work there is a very thorough index.

The information provided is about as thorough as one could expect with the name of the maker, date, price, size, etc...In addition there is some good reference material noting other Peanuts collectors and clubs. Nicely done.

I have been collecting Peanuts for over 15 years. This book is the first I reach for when deciding to purchase an item. The index thoroughly covers the book making it easy to get to an item right away. The book has a great coverage of Peanuts collectibles in a logically organized manner. The pictures are professionally taken and in full color. The item descriptions are helpful and concise with production dates, manufacturers, dimensions and price ranges.

Beyond being a pricing guide, this book also contains a tribute to Charles M. Schulz, an overview of how the evaluations of price were determined, collecting tips every Peanuts Collector should know, a collector's corner with photos of Peanuts Collectors' collections, Peanuts Collector's Clubs and activities, and more.

I highly recommend this book for every Peanuts Collector.

More of a love of self, vs a love of Peanuts collecting........2002-05-07

I was greatly disappointed in the book. While it has lots of Great pictures and information, the editor, freddy Margoline has to let us know time and again how big her collection is or how she has personally met Mr. Schulz and stuff like that. I just never got a "Happiness is" feeling from this book like I got from the Andrea Podley and Derrick Bang book. That book (Peanuts Collectibles: Identification & Value Guide) really does give the "Happiness is a Peanuts Collection" feeling in the spirit that Sparky would appreciate. So if you can only get one book on Peanuts Collecting, get the Podley one - it has a "Happy" soul.

A Must Have for the serious Peanuts Collector!.......2000-07-31

This is the best Peanuts Collectors' book ever! It contains excellent pictures and the price values are right on target. These Peanuts collectibles are organized by where you might find them in your home, so it is user friendly. (i.e. Peanuts in the kitchen, bathroom, playroom etc.) It has been very helpful for shopping at auctions on the internet. I have even been able to find items by their discription when the seller has not provided a picture. This book is great and well worth its price.

The Ultimate Peanuts Collector Guide.......2000-04-19

Freddi's book is a MUST HAVE for anyone collecting or dealing in Peanuts memorabilia. The layout of the book is fabulous and you only have to go to the index to find exactly which page you need to be on unlike other guides that give you a ballpark topic. You want bobbleheads, look up bobbleheads etc! The pricing is fair and not out of this world. Some folks like to charge outlandish prices for Peanuts items but this book gives you the real scoop on what something is worth, so don't be fooled by those who tell you an item is rare and worth $100 when this book will tell you it was made yesterday and on;y worth what was originally paid for it.

The pictures are great, lots of them and clear and concise, not to mention they show the item as it should be, in pristine condition.

The Collectors Corner in the back of the book is great too because it gets you up close and personal with others who are just as crazy about Peanuts as you might be. You are not alone in your craziness!

This book doesn't compare with David Wise's book "Spy, The Inside Story of How the FBI's Robert Hanssen Betrayed America." There seems to be a lot of assumptions and conjecture's in the Vise book. Wise has much better sources.

The book provided background on not only Robert Hanssen, but also the individuals associated with the job. I enjoyed the book very much.

Frightening!.......2007-07-26

A frightening look into the mind and works of a socially inadequate FBI Agent who betrayed the American people, trading their safety over cash and diamond. The most disturbing fact was his fantasy of retiring from the FBI and move to Moscow and train future spies. The author did an excellent job in telling the lives of a deceitful Hanssen and of a dedicated Director Freeh.

Undoubtedly written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist.

I felt the book was very interesting. It has a good narative form.
I do feel, however, it could have been less graphic on some of Robert's home life. I did read it after seeing the movie "Breach". The book's characterizations of the two main personalities added interest. The author has done a good job with a difficult subject

Fascinating Book.......2007-03-15

This book was a page turner. The author built a psychological profile of Robert Hansesn as well as reported historical facts, to try to give us some insight into his motivation, as well as placed him in a historical context. How could someone who loved this country and was devoted to law enforcement become such a terrible traitor and cause the death of so many people? It gives an amazing account.

Robert Hanssen FBI mole.......2006-05-11

This is a rather interesting story involving the most damaging known FBI mole in United States history. The book details what and who Hanssen exposed during his 25 year FBI career (20 years of which were spent divulging classified material to the Soviet Union and later Russia). His actions individually sent several men to their deathbeds and have allowed a breach in U.S. security.

The book only gives a very cursory glimpse into this man - and this is unfortunate but perhaps inevitable. Part of the problem is that the book was published in 2002 only months after his capture - the other fact is that Hanssen was able to tailor a deal with the government that allowed him to escape the death penalty and skate around certain revealing questions.

The book does a good job in not painting Hannsen as some evil, how-could-he monster. It reveals how ordinary this man is and how damaging his espionage was and probably continues to be for the U.S.

Mr. Vise also goes into FBI director Freeh's relationship to the Hanssen case, and his own career as director of the FBI. Also, the FBI's vital role and importance of both domestic and international presence is discussed. The book raises many questions and concerns.

This is an easy read and quite informative.
