"They Found Him Dead" by Georgette Heyer is as close as Ms. Heyer gets to a series with the inclusion of Superindent Hannasyde and Sargent Hemingway in their third baffling case. Everyone is trying to help them solve the case as the heirs to a fortune are being assassinated.
Bright new characters command the stage with the star being Timothy Harte, a brash young man in love with American crime films, who tries his hand at learning to be a detective until he may be the next victim. It seems a shame this clever story was missed during the film noir period, it has all the perfect elements. An intriguing read with plenty of laughs.

A readable fantasy.......2006-03-29

Greenhalgh's "Contrarywise" is set in a different world than ours. There are several races with distinct and unique racial attributes. For instance, the Jinnjirri normally wear hats or head scarves, since their hair changes color to match their mood. They can also effortlessly change their sex. One of the Jinnjirri characters is homosexual. It doesn't matter which sex s/he is, s/he wants the sexual partner to be the same sex. A book with inventiveness such as these examples has a lot going for it. Also, Greenhalgh shows a deft ear for dialog. Real people do talk the way she has her characters talk.

There are some problems with the book. Many of the characters are only two dimensional. The outright villain of the book, Cobeth, is described as being very charismatic. He certainly hides it well, or Greenhalgh doesn't show this side of him. He comes across as a vain, self-centered, vindictive jerk. Gadorian, the mayor of the city where most of the action takes place, is supposed to be very intellectual and altruistic, yet he appears to be driven purely by political ambition. He is convinced to ignore his prejudices solely because an outright display of them would hurt his reelection.

This book has some clever ideas in it, most of which work. It's obviously a first book, but Greenhalgh does show considerable talent.

Fresh and Funny, Contrariwise is a great read.......2000-01-25

Contrariwise is not only well written, but Greenhaugh has developed a wonderful fantasy without all of the standard fantasy elements (wizards, unicorns, mercenaries, etc.) This book is at once funny and thought-provoking, and will keep you on your toes. I've been waiting desperately for a re-print ever since I lost my copy a few years ago!

A brilliant unorthadox fantasy enmeshed with twisted logic.......1999-05-20

Well, it's been awhile since I read this book, so any in depth review is out of the question. Suffice it to say, for a good few years now I've been looking for another book by the same author, sadly to no avail. This however has not surprised me, Contrariwise is such a gem it's difficult to imagine the author would have much material left to do anything else. At any rate, on with the story! Contrariwise is not your run of the mill fantasy, Knights in armour, damsels in distress etc. The usual theme of good and evil is tossed out the window, the main character being the "Trickster", one of a pantheon of Greatkin, whose nature is as his name. He is at once childish and omnipotent, and in true Olympian style takes great delight in meddling with the lives of mere mortals. The geographics of the world in which contrariwise is set vary greatly from our own, and are able to physically affect the natures of the people who are born into them. There are no rules which correspond with the rules of our concepts of reality, therefore anything is possible. This said, There is a very definite logic at play,and many connections with familiar cultural teachings. "So turn the inside, inside out, And go sanely mad with me. Master the Trickster's roundabout, And come to my ecstacy!"

Superb Program that Combines Yoga Poses with Weight Training........2006-08-08

With plenty of photographs and explanations you can not go wrong while performing the Iron Yoga Workouts and Exercises / Poses.

I am really please to be able to train my arms, shoulders, chest, and back while doing Yoga. This is something you absolutely have to try if you already like Yoga. I enjoyed the book so much that I ended up also buying the Iron-Yoga's DVD.

If you want to experience an innovative body-shaping and toning routine this may be for you.

Don't waste your money.......2006-01-31

This book is a waste of money. There is basically 3 or so poses that you use weights with. Save yourself some money and just use your own imagination on how you could use a weight in say a Warrior pose, or a side plank pose, or chair pose and you'll be ahead of the game.

I Was Surprised and Pleased.......2005-11-14

As a yoga teacher I buy many videos to see what others are doing. I was pleasantly surprised to see and experience this video. It is done with mindfulness and is very effective. If it becomes too easy to do the tree, I have my students close their eyes; now when that becomes too easy I will have them use light weights. The speed in which this is done is to avoid injury and I thank the instructor for that.

Excellent Program.......2005-10-23

Recently, I started doing yoga with my wife and discovered a whole new dimension of fitness. My fitness objectives basically consist of weight control, muscle tone and staying as healthy as possible in order to do the other things I enjoy for as long as possible. This all boils down to eating less and moving more.

I'm only a novice, but this book and companion DVD have been a tremendous help. The book is best as reference tool when you want to explore details, background or study the pictures and descriptions. The DVD allows you to get started immediately.

Iron Yoga combines light weight training (2-5 lb dumbbells) with traditional Power Yoga poses to give you a full body workout. No argument here. It uses four types of poses: standing, seated, prone (face down), and supine (face up). The book illustrates all the poses with very good photos and explanations. One excellent aspect of both the book and DVD is that there are also examples of modified poses for beginners and intermediate experience levels. I found these especially helpful. Even with the 2 lb dumbbells, these poses are pretty tough, but well worth the effort. You can add weight as you become accustomed to a given weight level.

The book says that you benefit physically, mentally, and spiritually. I don't know about that, but I've decided to replace my exercise workouts with the Iron Yoga routines combined with a good walking program.

Clear & Instructive.......2005-09-23

I'm not usually a fan of exercise books. However, I find Iron Yoga to be different than the usual fare. The author's writing style is more personal and connecting. I can feel his passion for the topic. As you read it you'll understand why this variation of yoga came about and why it works so well.

I especially like the instructive text under each position. There is nothing worse than just having a picture to explain a position. Iron Yoga has just the right combination of pictures and text. The author is very clear and writes with the authority of an instructor. I highly recommend it.

A very practical resource.......2007-01-18

This is an extremely useful and practical book full of simple ideas and recipes for snacks and lunches. The information on planning snacks definitely comes from an anthroposophical bent, which might be troubling to some readers, but overall it is a wonderful resource. It includes sample snack menus, information of eating "a grain a day" (as well as the energetic properties of the grains), and sections on bread, soup, fruit, birthday cakes & muffins, and special foods for the festivals. We use ours daily!

This is a MUST HAVE for parents with small children!.......2006-06-23

This book is wonderful!!! Everyone that has children or works with them should have a copy. The recipes are healthy and appetizing selections that are made from ingredients most of us have in our pantries. There are fun suggestions for celebrations and the charming illustrations just complete the package! Not to mention the very reasonable price! Even if you don't have little ones, get the book, you'll love it!!!

Breaking a Horse to Harness: A Step-by-Step Guide.......2006-02-26

I read the reviews for this book, which were not particularly glowing, before I bought it and I bought it anyway to decide for myself. I found the book to be exactly what I wanted; a step by step guide to harness breaking. It is precise, almost to a fault, and informative. Anyone with horse knowlege can make sense of it. IT IS NOT FOR A NOVICE HORSE OWNER/RIDER. But if you are confident and comfortable riding and working around a variety of horses at varying levels of training, skill and experience, this is a good book for you. It IS written in "British" so be prepared to do some minor "translating." And there is not a glossary of terms (that I could find) relating to harness or cart parts, so some research on the readers part may be necessary. But informationally, I found the book to be sound and useful.

Excellent Beginner Driving Book.......2003-05-26

This is a great book for a new person teaching a horse to drive. I have a lot of horse experience, but not in driving. I found the steps very clear, very sensible, and in small enough increments so that both the horse and I felt like we had accomplished something each lesson towards our goal. Highly recommend.

This book is quite informative but has its flaws........1998-12-26

"Breaking a Horse to Harness" is an informative book and is quite good for a basic overview of what you are getting yourself into. However, the book is a bit too "British". At times, I found the lingo a bit confusing. It would have been nice to see a "troubleshooting" section for problems you may incur while training; the author didn't seem to anticipate many problems while training. The book is not really detailed enough to use as your only tool for training; a book that is more "well endowed" in the areas this book lacks is recommended as an accompaniment. Overall, the book does a good job of reviewing the steps involved in breaking your horse for harness but should definately not be the primary training tool for first-time trainers.

Treehouses.......2005-11-05

A beautiful book. Wow, has this author ever made the idea of the simple treehouse memorable. With personal stories from numerous clients who commissioned his firm to build some of the most enchanting homes you've ever seen, he peppers the book liberally with great observations about the rewards and difficulties inherent in some of his projects. In one case, the plans for building around branches of the existing tree proved inadequate enough that, for once, the company had to build the treehouse by proceeding intuitively as they erected the dwelling's walls.

One of the most striking aspects of the book is how *exciting* he makes this subject. Basically, this book is a beautiful picture book which also serves as an advertisement for his firm while including numerous memorable building vignettes -- and yet he was able to make me, at least, smile and wonder. After a couple pages, I stopped caring about the book's slightly self-serving nature, for this author has done what every author should hope to achieve in such a case: He has given so generously of his subject and his expertise that he makes an effective gift of his achievements to the reader. The best story in the book concerns the daughter of a client who decided to honor her mother's memory in a slightly unusual way.

A recommended book, whether for reading or for coffee table talk.

QuarkXPress Tips & Tricks, Second Edition, is clearly for the random-access reader who knows where all of the menu items are and what they do. It's also a bonanza for users who need a push in other areas. The tips in this book are conceptually organized in the same way as they are in its counterpart, The QuarkXPress Book for Macintosh, and a good table of contents makes finding specific tips accessible. The organization inside each chapter tries to keep similar tips, undocumented features, and tasks to be wary of in the same general area. The tips are often brief bits of knowledge rather than instructions that say "use the command-option-shift combination to do such-and-such."

There is one useful item that is not found elsewhere: a low-level trick to fix certain kinds of damaged files. You can find this and other troubleshooting advice in a separate chapter. The book also features appendices that cover AppleScripting and XTensions and a Macintosh-only CD-ROM that is loaded with Macintosh XTensions, a demonstration copy of QuarkXPress, and other tools. Windows users will find a chapter on cross-platform uses as well as some tips scattered throughout the book, but the CD-ROM is just a drink coaster for them.

Pleasant contents and an excellent discography.......1998-08-06

Teddy Wilson's elegant piano-style is reflected in this book. It is a self-portrait that avoids being hard on anybody. Teddy recounts his career with style and distance thereby avoiding being too personal. He doesn't cover every single year but rather focuses on some - to him - important incidents. The book is recommended for everybody interested in the swing era and its musicians and makes a pleasant reading. In the appendix there is an excellent discography listing - as far as I can judge it - really everything known as being recorded by Teddy Wilson, even if it has never been issued so far.
