Book Description

Sister Agatha is one of two extern nuns in the cloistered order at the Our Lady of Hope Monastery near the small desert town of Bernalillo, New Mexico. An investigative journalist before entering the monastery, now, as an extern it is Sister Agatha's role to be the link between her cloistered sisters and the outside world. It is the skills from both her past and current lives that she must bring to the task assigned to her by the Archbishop of her diocese. At a former monastery, closed and sold by the diocese and now operating as a hotel and business retreat, there are a series of mysterious goings on. Several valuable pieces of southwestern folk art owned by the diocese and left on loan in the retreat have been stolen and replaced by replicas. After an art expert was called in to verify the remaining collection, he too disappeared without a trace. And then, there is the ghost - the restless spirit rumored to wander the halls of the resort. At the request of the Archbishop, Sister Agatha's must now discreetly investigate the doings at the former monastery and make sure that an unwanted scandal is not about to engulf the diocese. But she soon learns that something even more sinister than a ghost is loose in the retreat and it is up to Sister Agatha to unravel the puzzle before the consequences turn deadly.

As usual the Thurlos do a good job with an engaging mystery.

4 out of 5 stars Thief in Retreat.......2005-07-21

I'm glad I was able to read Bad Faith first because I felt very comfortable reading this and I enjoyed it as much as the first book.

5 out of 5 stars exciting amateur sleuth .......2004-11-14

Sister Agatha stops a robbery in progress by punching the felon in the nose; then rides back to Our Lady of Hope monastery where she will confess to the mother superior that she committed violence against another human being. Before her confession occurs, the archbishop talks to her.

He wants her to go to the retreat; a former monastery where religious folk art belonging to the archdiocese is on display. Someone is stealing some of the artifacts and replacing them with forgeries. The Archbishop wants Sister Agatha to recover the church property and catch the thief. Driving her motorcycle and having her guard dog Pax sitting in the sidecar, she goes to the retreat. Almost immediately she finds the murdered body of the art professor who was testing two objects to determine their authenticity. While Sister Agatha is there, more objects go missing, the handyman vanishes and Sister Agatha sees the `ghost' that is haunting the halls at the inn. At her wit's end, Sister Agatha baits a trap and hopes that the killer and thief fall for it.

Aimee and David Thurlo have written an exciting amateur sleuth novel showcasing a nun who is deeply religious yet is a witty, inquisitive and a brilliant crime solver. A convention of mystery writers is staying at the retreat, giving readers, an insiders' look at the world of writing and getting published. The mystery is well crafted, the characters are brilliantly developed and the storyline is so fascinating it is impossible to put THIEF IN RETREAT down until the audience finds out who killer is.

4 out of 5 stars Food Counter Review.......2007-02-18

The book is full of valuable information. All items are alphabetically arranged, which is good. My only criticism is that it would help to have index tabs down the side of the book, opposite the spine. It's difficult to see where you are in the alphabet when you are browsing for a food type or brand label.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!.......2007-02-09

The Most Complete Food Counter is an excellent resource. Since I mostly cook from scratch, which is healthier, I cannot simply "look at labels" to find the nutritional information I need. Recently starting a low-carb diet, I find this book extremely helpful in weighing (no pun intended) my options before I shop, before I cook. This book gives me the knowledge I need to make informed, healthful decisions.

While I rarely eat at fast food and chain restaurants, the section in the back of the book will be a great resource for determining, prior to going out, what food options meet my specific dietary needs and how that meal will fit into my overall food planning that day.

    I highly recommend this publication!

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-06

This is primarily a reflection of our society as about 80% of it is the calories and other info on prepackaged foods that are already labeled.
The organizantion is just alphabetical so it's difficult to find for example, 1/2 chicken breast, or cup of spaghetti.

    5 out of 5 stars Resourceful Book.......2006-11-07

I am very satisfied with "The Most Complete Food Counter". Any food that you could possibly want to know about is in the book. Excellent resource!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for special diets.......2006-03-10

This book is extremely detailed and is a must for anyone on a special diet. If you have a salt-restriction you'll be amazed to find how much is used in processed foods.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Easy to Use.......2007-06-28

I don't use this for its fast food section, so I don't know how the quality of that is. However, the bulk of the book is a comprehensive and very easy to use listing of nutritional information for a huge variety of foods. I keep this handy and frequently reference it.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2005-10-18

If you do not have infinite patience DO NOT buy this book. While it contains over 800 pages of nutritional information and is very comprehensive it has NO organization to it. There is a very brief table of contents and no index at all. The contents are arranged alphebetically but there is no color coding or shading on the edges of the pages to indicate where A stops and B begins and so on. I HATED using it and only did so for about a week. Then I went out and bought a new calorie counting book which also included fat and carb information, which is all I need and wanted. My replacement book contains a Table of Contents, an index and is color coded and cost about 1/2 the price of this one.

4 out of 5 stars Complete, yes. Usable? eh........2004-12-31

Yeah, its damn complete. When you have like 25 different types of Arnold's bread to choose from, you know the book's got it all. Guaranteed you'll find more in these pages than in the biggest of supermarkets.

If you're at all familiar with nutritional guides, this one is great, if for no other reason because it has counts of chain restaurant items.

My BF bought me this book and a great tasting beverage to drink it with. Since he knows I quit coffee recently, he's been really wonderful helping me in cope with my mood swings. S o y f e e is made from soy beans that is roasted just like coffee. I enjoy the taste and don't miss coffee one bit. Buy it online at www.s o y c o f fee.com.

It's pure pleasure reading. Great Book!

5 out of 5 stars Helped me lose 25 pounds.......2004-11-18

This book was easy to use and had calorie information on nearly everything I eat. You can find brand name food, fast food and regular food made from scratch.

This is the perfect book for dieters and athletes looking to
cut calories from processed foods to all-natural fruits and
vegetables. A beauty of the work is that it covers the specific
food, exact portions and calories associated with each portion.
The author even provides a food diary to assist in planning
meals, as well as snacks. This presentation is easy to read
and understand. This work will make you conscious of the exact
calories consumed daily. With the information, you can plan an exercise program aimed at burning excess calories and
maximizing the body metabolism. The purchase is a good value
    for every personal health library.

    5 out of 5 stars Lucky Find!.......2004-09-14

Wow! What an awesome cookbook. I'm a collector who actually uses my cookbooks, and I have to say this is one of my most used cookbooks by far! I found this in a bargain store and I have to say it is definitely worth buying even at full price! The chicken breasts stuffed w/pine nuts and spinach was awesome, and is the favorite of my childrens meals including the pickest child of all! I used the filling as an appetizer in pie crusts that I made into cresents..also very good (served w/a mustard dipping sauce)!
The Pork chops w/carmalized apples, calvados, cider and cream..mmmmmmm! I tried w/apple brandy to make sure we liked it before splurging on the imported Calvados,..MY SUGGESTION..go ahead and splurge the first time around, you won't be disapointed! My kids liked the reduction better before adding the cream, but both were delicious!
There are so many fun and delicious recipes in this book that are so easy you will impress your friends and family with these recipes! I can't wait for Jill Prescott's next cookbook. She also has a website you can check out! :) If I lived closer I would be taking her cooking classes.

We always receive complements on the dishes, and sell many additional books once the dinner guests find out!

3 out of 5 stars What works for TV, may not work in print........2002-10-29

Jill Prescott's Ecole De Cuisine is primarily a book for her fans: those who've seen her on tv and have seen enough of her to interpret her "wit" as indeed, wit, and not blatent food snobbery. Those who have not yet matched voice, expression and personality to the text, will likely be left out in the cold. Even having watched the show a couple times, I found myself having to set aside my irritation with her tone to get ahead to the recipes.

Jill does indeed know what she's been taught, does it well, and teaches it well. Her book is well put together, the organization great, presentation lovely... sturdy, reliable French Technique, the recipes solid. However, those who are fans of Julia Child and Jacques Pepin will find it redundant and lacking the earthy "come into my kitchen and make yourself at home" hospitality of their writing. You are clearly on one side of the table with Jill and you are there to learn, not contribute.

A word to the wise: if you're dieting or on a cholesterol or any other special needs diet, this is not the book for you. It is not designed to work around any dietary needs, but to present French Cooking in it's traditional (and best) form: rich & without skimping on the fat.

5 out of 5 stars Jill Prescott's Ecole de Cuisine.......2002-10-21

I recently purchased this book after watching Jill Prescott on PBS in Fort Meyers. I LOVE the book as much as the show. The directions are clear and easy to follow. I am making sauces with stellar results. I have had so many failures due to bad instructions. I feel that this book is well written by an expert that has a solid knowledge of her craft. She even wrote back to me after I emailed her on her website with a question that I had about something she did on a show. This is one of my favorite books. EVERYTHING turns out! It's packed with good information. Jill doesn't talk above the novice but makes it easy for us to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Jill Prescott's Ecole de Cuisine.......2002-04-04

I bought the book after watching Jill Prescott's PBS series. The recipes are just as good as the show. Everything is clear and well written. I have great success with all the recipes. I like her straightforward approach to the classics. This is one of my favorite books. She is a superb teacher both on TV and in her book!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT LITTLE BOOK, GREAT LITTLE PRICE1.......2001-03-06

This handy guide is well organized, factual and contains a lot of pertinent information specific to longhaired cats. All this for an affordable price! The basics in cat care, health, immunization, nutrition and grooming are contained in this book, along with some cute coloured photographs. Not that longhaired cats differ greatly from shorthaired cats in general cat care; however, certainly the grooming requirements are more laborous and you do need the right tools of the trade to work with. One item that I have found to be of tremendous value that was not mentioned here was a "detangling comb," a wide-spaced steel comb to remove mats, which can be purchased at any pet supply. This is a great little book at a great little price.

      Book Description

Since the 1930s, more than 1.5 million glass paperweights have been made in Britain. Here is the first comprehensive reference to identify them. Whether you have been given one paperweight as a gift and know nothing about the subject, or are a serious collector who owns hundreds of items, this book is certain to prove indispensable. For the beginner, the illustrations and listings will help in identifying your paperweight, as well as giving its value. The production of glass paperweights in Britain is due largely to the initial stimulus of one person, Paul Ysart, whose family settled in Scotland. Many Ysart paperweights never illustrated before are shown here, including a rare signed and dated butterfly, a magnum containing a metal badge, and a scrambled weight with butterfly portrait canes. Strathearn items include miniatures and magnums, and rarely seen illustrated brochures. Whitefriars lovers will appreciate the most comprehensive list ever published. Of the book's 360 color illustrations, over 60 are of Whitefriars, including more than fifteen highly important paperweights never illustrated before, such as the Royal Visit and a footed magnum over five inches in diameter. Caithness, John Deacons, William Manson, and Selkirk's ranges are well covered, as are many studio artists. Humorous stories and tales of production problems add to this book's appeal. By listing over 2,000 British paperweights, the author has provided a notable reference work that will be consulted for years to come.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Has many helpful tips if not a systematic guide.......2004-05-17

This book is not a detailed lawn program for lawn care. It is more or less a collection of articles and tips on lawn care. I certainly found many useful tips and helpful advice as I read through the book. However, in reading it front to back you will find that Mr. Baker differs in some small details from one presentation to the next, but his overall conception of what goes into a good lawn remains quite consistent throughout.

Mr. Baker offers several of his famous tonics that I look forward to trying. Some of the advice seems a tad dated - he talks about buying things from Brookstone that aren't offered on their website anymore and he doesn't mention his own website www.jerrybaker.com that does offer many of them and more.

The book discusses different types of grass and weeds, but doesn't offer much in the way of pictures. There are books that do and I find the pictures of the weeds very helpful in identifying them. But this book does offer state-by-state help on certain things and resources you can tap to get more information - very helpful.

This book is certainly worthy the price I paid for it and I like the tips I picked up. It isn't perfect, but deserves a place on your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars The greenest grass imaginable.......2000-05-26

I bought this book for my husband. He follows it faithfully, and you can see the results in our yard. We have the most beautiful, lush grass in the neighborhood - which seems to be a miracle, since our yard was an overgrown field just two years ago. Jerry Baker provides simple ways to establish and maintain your lawn. I also appreciate the fact that we do not have to go to a gardening store to find the items recommended in his book.

3 out of 5 stars It might be easier to be green than you think!.......1999-10-22

I'm sure my fellow gardeners have noticed how a nicely tended strip of grass sets off a garden bed perfectly! Designers say our eyes need a place to rest before we can see all the beauty in front of us. Although most people make their New Years resolutions in December or January, I promise myself every July I am going to do something about my grass.....something other than dig it all up. We've all seen Jerry Baker on television spraying ammonia and dish soap all over his yard...I find it very intriguing. Jerry's book on lawn care has a ton of info to offer..and true enough it is a little hard to follow sometimes, but most people will not do everything anyway. For my poor lawn anything is an improvement, so if you are task-oriented, schedule based and really really care about your lawn this book should be very helpful. There are a lot of chemicals included in the regimen so beware if you like me avoid them. But there is a lot here that will be used on my own little patch of soon to be healthier grass. If you want more details, reviews of other gardening books or simple little garden musings.

4 out of 5 stars Good (albeit inconsistent) advice; your lawn will improve........1999-09-22

After reading through this book twice, highlighting various tips and tidbits, I realized that I couldn't put it all together into one organized plan. So I went through the book a third time, taking notes, and trying to categorize the author's advice. Guess what? It's not possible. This how-to book IS very disorganized, and worse, internally inconsistent. However, I concluded that if I just took a stab at using parts of his advice, formulas, when-to's, etc., that my lawn would probably improve. It did. No question. I like the fact that his methods are easy and inexpensive. I got much better results than I did with my previous 6x/year TrueGreen lawn service for $250. If you're interested in understanding what your lawn wants, this book has the advice if you're willing to sift through the disorganization.

3 out of 5 stars Good information but very disorganized.......1999-07-19

General information is good. Jerry writes about everything from lawn equipment, watering, home to homemade tonics. However, the book is very disorganized. Jerry did a very poor job of summarizing the steps to a great lawn.

              5 out of 5 stars Best Real-World Examples.......2006-10-15

I blame Amazon for this horrible problem I have with buying gillions of design books...most are good references but not really day-2-day tools and inspiration...in my lastest order, got this book and RIGHT AWAY I was stoked with the samples and the dogma presented. YIPPEE!

              4 out of 5 stars Nice but..........2006-06-27

As with other books by Samara (e.g. Typography Workbook), this one is filled with beautiful and relevant examples. My only gripe would be that... the type used for the main text is too light and hard to read! - which kind of contradicts the subject? :-/

              3 out of 5 stars Needs a Glossary.......2006-06-17

As an introduction to publication design the book is good.

The only criticism I have is that there is no glossary or even an index. There are some places in the book where a term is introduced before it's been described so at times I was wondering if I'd missed something. The term is eventually described, usually a couple of paragraphs or sometimes pages later, so if you're not reading the book from beginning to end it can be difficult to find the place where a term is described.

The book does not offer an exhaustive treatment of design principles and I will buy other books to learn more, but it's been a helpful introduction.

              5 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2006-03-21

This book is great. I'm not even finshed with it yet and already I've learned a lot. It's full of usefull tips that I never learned in school. It is a wlecome contrast to the many industry books that show you lot of examples but no explanations for the principles behind the design. I would highly recommend this book.

                Book Description

Designing For Newspapers and Magazines examines how newspapers and magazines are produced. It offers guidance on how to produce attractive publications and how to tailor them to their target audience by advising them on the use of color, text placement, typography and images.

Designing for Newspapers and Magazines shows how a well- designed publication can provide a powerful platform for good journalism. Written by an experienced journalist and newspaper designer, the book details the elements of a good design and provides instruction on how to get the most out of computers and computer-aided design. A final section examines a range of different local and national publications and explains the reasoning that underpins their design choices.

Designing for Newspapers and Magazines includes: how to set up a new publication; planning an edition of a newspaper or magazine; typography and working with text; working with images and technical production; designing pages and howto use color; design and journalism ethics, and a glossary of journalistic and design terms.

This book is just "okay." The book itself is not designed in a way that I find particularly handsome (can a graphic design book be judged by its cover?). Similarly, some of what's inside is not very impressive, but the things that strike me (maybe a quarter of the things in the book) are really great.
