An English find.......2001-03-07
I found this book while traveling abroad this summer - since coming back to the States it has been impossible to find anything by Charlotte Bingham. Please take the time to read this story - you will find it enchanting! Also wonderful is Debutantes by Charlotte Bingham.
Currently reading.......2000-10-21
I found this book at a local flea market we had over the summer. To say the least it's now becomming one of the best books i've read. I'm 3/4 of the way through the book and can hardly put it down:) Charlotte Bingham does a great job with Cassie, Joel, Jo, and Mattie.
Horse racing with a heroine and a love story all rolled into one:) A Champion Horse who's kidnapped and then gelded. The main character Cassie - A woman in a mans world (horse racing) who's threatened when she keeps her home bred horse in training and then has it kidnapped only to find it gelded and her hopes crushed. Joel - an artist who falls in love with Cassie and helps her uncover the mystery surrounding The Nightengale's kidnapping. He ends up helping his father put an end to his life and ends up in prison for it.
I'm not gonna tell ya anymore:) you've gotta read the book!:) trust me you won't want to set it down:)
A Touching Story.......2000-06-13
This is one of my most favorite books. I have read it over and over again and never tire of it. The book takes you through the life of a young girl, from childhood until she is an old woman. She faces many obstacles in her life, and several tragedies, and she perseveres and overcomes them. The book is set in New York and later, in Ireland. I don't want to write much more about the story itself - I just have to say that women should read this. I just love it. I had my mom read it, and she also loved it.

Khushwant is the man.......2002-11-30
Like Train to Pakistan, this book explores a side of Indias history that was very very painful. It is a towering achievement in storytelling, and is a compulsively readable book. Khushwant Singh is a well known Delhi based journalist who views India with an unflinching eye, and populates his stories with utterly believable characters and situations. There is much tragedy, and much humour throughout the book. Do not be surprised if you shed a tear reading this one.
A deeply intimate look at a sikh family in turmoil.......2000-10-25
Khushwant Singh's genius is in plain view. This is a story of a Sikh family in the days before India's independence. The father is a minor official, a loyal servant of the British. The son is a hot blooded young revolutionary, but emotionally still a child. I Shall Not Hear The Nightingale gives the reader a window into the world of this family caught up in changing times and the turmoil they endure. It is a unique look at the relationship of the British masters with those Indians who were loyal to them, at the unravelling of that relationship, and at the heartbreaking devastation it brought to the families of Punjab.
This book is a must read for those interested in Indian history, culture, and psyche. All Britishers, Indians and Pakistanis should read it, as should students of the social impact of decolonization.

Book Description
In his own words Larry Woody, who has covered racing for over 30 years, will give readers never before seen quips, tales and anecdotes about some of the most famous names in racing. Here are just a few of the highlights: how about the time Richard Petty almost bought a race track, or, why Darrell Waltrip once wanted to punch out some race fans. Or the night that repo wrecker driver-turned-NASCAR star Bobby Hamilton was attacked by the owner of a car he was trying to tow away. Or the worried elevator conversation Jeff Gordon had with wife Brooke after crashing Dale Earnhardt at Daytona. What prominent driver was the biggest pain to deal with? (not Tony Stewart). What was the "afterlife" experience that NASCAR VP Jim Hunter says changed his life? How was NASCAR history made at Daytona's Boot Hill Saloon? Why did Eddie Gossage (Texas Motor Speedway president) get fired as a sports writer during his college days? Why did a young Dale Earnhardt show up at the Tennessean Sports Department one day?

Great book for reunion planners!.......2007-07-29
This is one of the best books on reunion planning, with lots of great information and ideas I never thought of before. Well worth the money!
Must read if you are having a Reunion!.......2005-10-09
Excellent book with a lot of info and good Ideas. Will not be disappointed with this Book! A great book for planning a reunion.
Look no farther -- this is the book you need!.......2004-10-16
Family reunions are not, for many of us, as basic a part of family research as they might be, and books on the subject usually reflect that. If most of your relatives still live within a day's drive, you probably see them regularly and an annual picnic is almost a routine event, dedicated to introducing new offspring and remembering the recently deceased. If your family is scattered all over the country, as is true of probably a majority of the American population these days, a reunion becomes a special event with a significant outlay in time and money for both planners and attendees, but the activities are still largely the same. But Sandy Clunies, a Certified Genealogist and frequent speaker at the national level, is a very experienced family researcher and past winner of the NGS Family History Writing Contest, so her interest here is primarily in the role of genealogy at the family reunion. How could any attentive researcher pass up the chance to graze among all those memories and experiences brought together for a few days in one place?
Putting on a reunion can be an overwhelming task, but (to quote the author's grandmother) you can eat an elephant if you cut it into bite-sized pieces. "What kind of show should it be?" she asks. Do you need a theme? Is there to be a central event, like a milestone anniversary or the dedication of a DAR grave marker? Will it be potluck at a state park? A gathering at the ancestral family farm? Or a Caribbean cruise? The most important rule, though is Plan Ahead. At least a year - preferably two if it's to be a big event. The second rule is Take a Businesslike Approach. This includes record keeping, not only to properly account for finances but to provide information for future reunions. (Detailed attendance records from family gatherings held a century ago have become valuable resources in their own right.) The Internet, naturally, is a great help in locating those whom you want to invite, especially if you've been out of touch for a few years, and the author gives detailed advice (plus encouraging anecdotes) on the use of search engines and message boards for this purpose. You will also want to advertise your reunion online in order to alert those individuals you weren't able to locate. Many suggestions of an historical and genealogical nature are provided for activities (house and cemetery tours, living history demonstrations), and for showcasing the family's history (enlargements of photos collected in advance, displays of inherited artifacts). And, of course, a series of oral history sessions is an opportunity not to be missed, with memories triggered by old photos and conversations with other descendants. To preserve all you've been able to learn, a post-reunion book (with sales solicited during the event) will not only provide a permanent record, it will help establish a tradition of future reunions and encourage wider attendance. A family website can present new information acquired, woven into what was already known, and can also encourage further research -- and advance planning for the next get-together. Even though I'm not a big reunion-attender, this is by far the best book I've seen on the subject.

The Gift of New Memories for Your Family.......2003-07-29
What a great book this is!!! Many families would love to have a reunion, but are quickly daunted by what appears to be the enormity of such a project.
This author not only has organized her own large family reunions, but has beautifully and personally given us a simple to follow road map.
With this book you can begin building the strengths and joys a reunion will bring to every family member - and you will be giving the very best present of all - the gift of new memories.
Your family deserves the best - and you can give it to them!!!

Book Description
A heartbreaking novella from the author of The Clouds Above.
From the editor of the acclaimed comics anthology NON comes this beautiful, emotive "Picto-Novella." Largely wordless and cunningly rendered, this little book is sure to touch most folks. In The Last Lonely Saturday, an older man sits at his kitchen table, filled with melancholy. Dishes are piled up in the sink, a full pot of coffee burns on the counter; it's a quiet scene of existential despair. It quickly becomes clear that the man is a widower, and today is the day to visit his departed wife's gravesite. Little does he know that what the day holds for him will result in this being his last lonely Saturday.
Both sweet and bitter, realistic and fantastic, The Last Lonely Saturday is an evocative, romantic novella, told in a beautiful two-color, red and yellow palette. His economical images waste not a line, and his narrative flows effortlessly from panel to panel in this heartwarming story of love and love lost.

A small book with a big heart.......2007-10-02
Deceptively simple, quietly tender, definitely a tiny jewel -- Jordan Crane has pared down everything to its essence in this superb little tale, with every line speaking volumes. For anyone who has ever deeply loved another, this will strike a deeply-felt chord. Most highly recommended!
Underwhelmed.......2007-01-03
I've recently become more interested in graphic novels from the West, and a friend recommended this book as a "must read". From the standpoint of the "graphic novel", this book doesn't really stack up. But that's okay, because it's not designed to be equal fellow with Dead Walking or J:tHM. Taken as a more artistic work, one finds merit in the absence of any substantial dialog or the simplistic style of art.
But, myself, growing up and growing on Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes, which was filled with incredibly literate dialog and had some notable Sunday editions of the comic that could easily be called complex works of art, found this book to be rather vanilla.
Jordan Crane's Masterpiece!.......2003-06-18
From the editor of the acclaimed comics anthology NON comes a beautiful, emotive work of comic art. Largely wordless and cunningly rendered, this little book is sure to touch most folks. The story is both sweet and bitter, both realistic and fantasic, but Crane is certain of what he's getting at, never conflicted. His economical images waste not a line, and his narrative flows effortlessly from panel to panel.
Crane's style is so inspired and universally appealing that I can see him becoming a sort of Edward Gorey of our time - widely respected and so confident in his craft that is is able to create just what he likes, and is well-loved for it. This book makes a splendid gift, and is further proof that comics are more than just fodder for superhero movies...
The Art of Mime.......2000-07-30
If the careful dance of mime can be translated into a paper medium, then Last Lonely Saturday would be it. The "comic book" genre has gone many steps ahead with this book. I have given it to senior citizens as well as the "Gen X" people and all respond with the same emotion. With a limited amount of words and the way the artist used mimimal amount of lines, it allows the reader to put his own history into the story. It is like a Japanese drawing using only the lightest of the brush to bring an emotion or feeling to the surface. Truly a book to tuck into your pocket or purse and lend or pass on to friends. Some people, hardened citizens of the world, have gotten choked up with the feelings this book evokes. It really is a fun gift to give.

Good Reference Book.......2005-11-02
This book is great to give you some general guidlines, obedience, and information on raising your puppy. The information is good and useful, however as you begin raising your puppy and you need more information you will end up having to buy some other books that are more specific. For example this book does give some good obedience instructions with great picture demonstrations. However it does not go into great detail about each command so if you have trouble or this method doesn't work for you, you will most likely have to buy another book that is specifically written on obedience. I highly suggest "Rover, Dont Roll Over". This books has great illustration though and if you need the extra pictures as an example of how to do something then definitly purchase this book as a nice reference guide.
A must-read if you have a puppy........2005-08-29
Excellent book, very clear and well done, if you're raising a puppy it's a real must. Strongly advised.

"Wee Warriors and Playtime Patriots" by Nancy Griffith........2001-01-01
From the standpoint of a military history bookseller and as a collector, this book suceeds on many levels. It is obviously a "labor of love" not only for the subject material, but also for the actual layout and execution of the finished product. The author literally spent years researching the subject, investing her time, effort, and money acquiring the finest collection of children's military uniforms from all over the United States, and with this book she shares all of the information with the general public for the first time. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in American history- the book is a time line from the American Revolution through the Vietnam Period, with the author's own very unique perspective. The text is very detailed and observant, and the quality of the photgraphy is first rate. The book will become the standard qoutable reference for this particular field of collecting.Whether you like to read history or you actually participate in the collecting of historical memorabilia, "Wee Warriors and Playtime Patriots" will be one of the most enjoyable finds you will place on your bookshelf this year.

Beautiful pictures, as expected, a little short of details........1999-11-10
I went through this book cover to cover about 3 times. I also stopped in certain sections and read a few pages of text. The pictures were outstanding and definitely gave me some new ideas about landscape architecture.
However, as expected the book was a little short on detail regarding specifics. It covered a lot of plants but, it did not go into details. At most, it might have devoted about 4 or 5 lines per plant although it covered the family in greater scope. This is fine for generalities but, even indiviual species within a family have vastly different requirements which is the kind of information I was looking for. For example, type of soil, amount of watering, to use or not to use ferilizer, drought resistance, amount direct sun versus indirect sun, etc., etc.
I already have a myriad collection of books addressing the Palms. I will probably have to get books which specifically address the growing requirements of the various subtropical plants. To this degree I have also ordered the Encylopedia on Tropical Plants. Hopefully, it will add more depth regarding the characteristics and growing requirements of various tropical and subtropical plants. Living in Florida, this has evolved into a hobby since we have a year-round growing season down here.
Palms, bamboos, ferns, oh my!.......1999-04-02
Glad I bought it! Great reading book to introduce you to all that's available. Breakdowns are by plant type -wish it had some more specifics, but with the numbers of species out there I can understand. Excellent photography.
Beautiful photography!.......1998-11-11
The Subtropical Garden is just the book for those landscaping their homes, gardens, and greenhouses to achieve a tropical feel. It will give you many ideas and you will start making lists before you turn the first page. I do not agree with her advice against the running bamboos, but then I am used to handeling them. I think you will be surprized at some of the things she will teach you about these "mostly" foliage plants and their cultural needs. A big plus is the wonderful photography by Gil Hanly. Buy this today!

Indispensible for the beginning gardner.......2005-03-21
This book is wonderful. I'd be lost without it. It's also a very enjoyable read. It does not pretend to be an encyclopedic reference, so get something else (with photos...) for that purpose.
You need to do some serious research because info is dated.......2005-01-08
Like Linne Faulk, who wrote a related guide, I am a transplant from Michigan. Moving to Florida was just about equal to moving to another planet. My wife and I are homeowners in Cape Coral, found ourselves in Plant Hardiness Zone 10b, but you know, you just have to try different things. We have a butterfly garden which went way whacko with too many dune sunflowers and not enough tropical salvias, gallardias, firebushes, and Bahama cassia.
One item to update (this anecdotal book was published eight or nine years ago): There is still Miami sludge, Grade AA, but it is no longer known as "Florida Organix" or "daorganite". Further, in talking with the Lee County Extension Office, products such as Milorganite and Grade AA Miami sludge are being panned as less effective than originally thought.
Ultimately, I found gardening to be an art - you never truly master it. But while you're doing it, you must keep your mind constantly engaged because you do learn something new - sometimes paradoxical - every day.
I enjoyed the book immensely, especially the old-timer's (Mr. Songdahl) stories. Two of my favorites are the guy who put his whole lawn in a rock garden and bronzed his mower and the transplant who received a one-sentence report on the soil sample he sent back to his old extension agent in Iowa: something like "The only things you don't need are rocks and seashells." So true of Cape Coral, and it seems the only remedy for the packed ocean bottom we have for land is the annual amendment of compost or green manure. By the way, we're soon to come under water restrictions, so think more in terms of lots of native plants and very little, if any, grass. Being an old corporate accountant, that's my Plan B for what it's worth.
The wise gardener who is computer literate first will link with the Universtiy of Florida website at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu. This site has been a treasure trove of gardening and horticultural information - along with "texts" to help in becoming certified as a Florida Master Gardener, one of my goals.
Charming .... but there are better books.......2000-01-14
The folksy information really isn't much for true gardeners but some may enjoy it. If you're really into gardening, there are far better books.
The Art of South Florida Gardening.......1999-12-28
Excellent primer for gardeners in the southern counties of Florida. Pen sketches. No photos, so you'll need a garden/plant photo book too.
Humorous tips and practical advice on Fl gardens, lawns, trees & shrubs along with their 12-month growing season. Includes short descriptions on some of the more beautiful or well-adapted plants to use in the suburban landscape.
The authors also cover specific challenges south FL gardeners face regarding soils, wet/dry periods and bugs. Conversational style and short chapters but thorough. Gets you to want to go outside and start planting! Excellent!

Book Description
Between 1896 and 1906, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) produced a series of buildings and interiors in and around Glasgow of such startling invention that he immediately established himself as one of the truly great figures in early twentieth-century architecture and design. David Brett argues that Mackintosh's originality was grounded in a highly subjective "poetics of workmanship", in which the structure, features, interiors and furnishings of each individual building became subject to a unifying system of forms, metaphors and unconscious associations. The system Mackintosh evolved allowing for the formulation of an almost infinite series of ensembles. After focusing on the various decorative details and interior spaces of Mackintosh's buildings the author reaches to the heart of Mackintosh's poetic system – the suffused eroticism of the sleek, "feminine" and intensely private "white interiors". A notable feature of this persuasive reappraisal of Mackintosh's work is the wealth of photographs by the author showing rarely featured details of buildings, interiors and furnishings.

This book deserves to be reprinted!.......2005-06-10
I discovered the latest edition iof Finer Points in the Spacing and Arrangement of Type, and was impressed by the value it offered--especially since it sells new for a small percentage of the high cost of the original hardcover edition.
Although the rules of setting easy-to-read type have been known for centuries, sometimes the most inspirational writing is to be found in books that are considered inter-generational "classics."
Geoffrey Dowding's Finer Points in the Spacing and Arrangement of Type provides an excellent and highly accessible review of the basics of text alignment and spacing. Its warmth and style drives home information you may already be familiar with, but never really "noticed."
This book is one of those "gems" that puts newer, more clinical, books to shame.
Good coverage, but limited scope.......2005-03-14
This is a brief book, under 60 pages, dedicated to just one topic: visual spacing of type. Within that field, it addresses mostly the visual spacing of body text. It's not a wide range to cover, but Dowding covers it in detail, with many instructive examples.
Just about everything in this booklet derives from one principle: obeying the visual mass of the letterforms. That usually means, for example, spacing the letter T as if it were narrower than the spindly arms at the top. When justifying columns of text, it means that periods, commas, and single-quotes may extend beyond the normal border of the text block. Those sorts have so much white in the piece of the line they occupy, that they have almost no visual mass all.
The biggest part of the discussion centers on word spacing and letter spacing. Dowding is adamant about tight spacing within words and even, narrow spacing between words. Given the vagaries of word length and line length, this means that the typographer should be able to choose whether to use contractions or not, to choose '&' instead of 'and', and so on as needed to adjust the line density.
Dowding presents a number of bad examples, not all of them intentionally. On p.17 near the bottom, for example, a few consecutive lines end in punctuation, justified with the text. That unintended indentation looks a little like a car with a dented fender. P.35 shows an ambiguity between the running titles and a section title - the kind of ambiguity that typography should resolve. And repeatedly, p.5 for example, it may take a few moments to realize that one is reading sample text, not the exposition itself. There are typographic clues in the sample that set it off from the flow of the text, but they're so delicate that only a typograhic master (not me) would respond to them as a conspicuous detour sign.
Unfortunately, much of his advice is difficult or impossible to put to use within common word processing software. Still, these are good skills to know when the appearance of text really matters, because even balky tools can be forced to do the right thing when the effort is warranted.

Average. I Suggest Another Book Instead.......2000-11-25
If there were no other options for book buyers looking for an informative reference on classic typography, then "Finer Points" would be an essential book to buy. But because I've also read "The Elements of Typographic Style" there is little point in owning "Finer Points," for "Elements" covers everything here plus a whole lot more. I purchased "Finer Points" after reading "Elements" thinking there may be more offered here, but most of the imformation is duplicated. I suggest gettng "Elements" instead. A complete, well-designed, more up-to-date reference than this one.
Required reading for all professional typesetters........2000-10-03
Although this book was written long before digital typography came into being, the ideas promoted by this slim little volume are essential to well-set type. Dowding understands the importance of close word-spacing (NO letterspacing, PLEASE!) and carefully ragged and hypenated text. His eye is scrupulous; the book is beautifully set and clearly illustrates his ideals. Its not difficult to apply his teaching to digitally-set type. Quark's defaults are atrocious -- in most cases I now set my word-spacing to minimum 85%, ideal 90%, max 100%, no letterspacing, and hyphenation ON. It's amazing how much this will improve the appearance of your pages. His advice on setting titles (optically aligned) and drop caps is just as invaluable. If you are a professional, please read this book and save the art of typography from the apathy which now plagues it.
Not your first typography book, but a very great tenth one........2000-09-05
Many years ago when I was studying Apple Computer's QuickDraw GX technology, I was amazed by the way old timers set their removable types, and how difficult it was to implement their tricks to the digital realm. If you're interested in the ways they set hotmetal types, this book is for you.
For example, this book introduces you optical alignment. That is a trick to compose a drop capital letter a little bit left, so your eyes will see it as _fully aligned_ instead of caved in a little. Even if you don't use TrueType GX (I doubt any of you ever use it), this book still can teach you a lot.

Good coverage, limited scope.......2005-03-14
There are typographic clues in the sample that set it off from the flow of the text, but they're so delicate that only a typographic master (not me) would respond to them as a conspicuous detour sign.
Unfortunately, much of his advice can only be applied using very indirect means, within common word processing software. Still, these are good skills to know when the appearance of text really matters, because even balky tools can usually be forced to do the right thing when the effort is warranted.

Book Description
This memoir is a tribute to an extraordinary community and an extraordinary leader. Ghetto Kovno was one of the very few Ghettos in the Holocaust to be headed by a Council elected by the Jewish community, rather than one appointed by the Germans. In the face of relentless, murderous pressure, this Council attempted to maintain a civic structure and, by whatever means possible, to save Jewish lives. Despite terrible odds, it partially succeeded.
At the head of the Ghetto stood Dr. Elkhanan Elkes, a distinguished physician who is emerging as a luminous figure in the history of the Holocaust. This Memoir recounts the march of events from the initial German invasion of Lithuania on June 22, 1941 to the final destruction of the Ghetto on July 13-15, 1944. It is based on sources quoted in the text and personal papers in possession of the author. Also included are reproductions of extraordinary water colors and pen- and-ink drawings executed at the time in the Ghetto by the historic Esther Lurie, who served as artist-witness-recorder and visual chronicler to her community.
