Book Description
Selected by The Times (London) as one of the twentieth century’s “100 Masters of Crime,” Jill McGown writes mystery-suspense novels with plots that defy second-guessing. In Unlucky for Some, her thirteenth book featuring Detective Chief Inspectors Lloyd and Hill, the quiet life of an English town scarcely conceals the deadly menace lurking around dark corners and within the human mind.
Michael Waterman is a self-made millionaire. His casinos and nightclubs ensure a constant flow of cash, and Waterman knows what he needs to do to keep it that way. So far, it seems, he has stayed on the right side of the law. Certainly, no one seriously suspects him of murdering bingo player Wilma Fenton, who was struck down while walking home with a purse crammed full of winnings. Her murder looks like an ordinary mugging except for one oddity: The killer had left Wilma’s money neatly fanned out across her body.
The motive behind the bafflingly violent act dogs Lloyd and Hill– now married and the harried parents of a two-year-old daughter. The stakes are raised with a second murder, modeled on the first . . . and then a third. A cold-blooded killer is challenging not only the police but the one witness to the first slaying: England’s premier expert on serial crime, well-known journalist and TV personality, Tony Baker. It has now become a twisted game of madness and logic–in which failure to outwit the murderer means more senseless deaths.
In this astonishing Lloyd and Hill novel, Jill McGown’s storytelling genius will captivate longtime fans as well as first-time readers. Unlucky for Some is lucky for all admirers of virtuoso suspense writing.

Goodbye Lloyd and Hill?.......2007-05-06
As I read this book, I discovered that the author had recently died, so it made me more aware that I was probably reading the last of Lloyd and Hill. That didn't change the fact that this entry is just as engrossing as all the others in the series. Maybe the wrong-doer was obvious, but the fun of reading McGown's books is that you become involved in the lives of the main characters and in the life of an English town. I've sometimes had a hard time keeping up with all of the characters, but this time I was able to follow along. McGown pays attention to the details which makes her books so entertaining.
I'll miss her books, and I'll miss finding out how Lloyd and Hill's lives continue. Rest in peace Ms. McGown.
Excellent.......2007-03-08
Full of twists and turns as well as continuing the relationships between the two detectives.
I really enjoyed this except for one thing.......2006-05-03
That one thing is fairly important: the ending. Although I had a sense early on (correctly, as it turned out) of the who-dun-it of this mystery, I found the solution just lacking in believability. Murderers in mysteries need an adequate motive, and I thought that the motive was too little to explain murder. I can't say more without giving away too much.
But -- this is a complex and interesting puzzle mystery -- one of those mysteries where you solve it along with the police, as they go interview people, discover facts, interrogate suspects, etc. The plot involves a series of murders that take place in a small English city at a time when a well-known television journalist specializing in crime is in town working on a story. The killer appears to be engaged in a battle of wits with the journalist, suggesting that the motive is a grudge against the journalist, but who and why? The husband-and-wife police detectives have a small hand-picked group of staff working on solving the mystery before someone else gets killed. It appears that there's some connection to a string of gambling palaces (bingo, mostly) owned by a shady man who is living in a country house near the city.
This is perhaps the third mystery I've read by McGown, and I intend to go on and read more by her. She is not quite of the caliber of the great writers of English mysteries, such as Elizabeth George, P.D. James, or Deborah Crombie, but she writes quality mysteries that engage the mind as puzzles even as the reader enjoys the characters and following the background story line of the personal relationships of the detectives and their various problems (such as a live-in mother-in-law to care for their child).
Unlucky Strike.......2006-02-03
Having read and enjoyed some of the previous novels by Jill McGown about Lloyd and Hill, I was looking forward to this one. While I enjoyed it and will continue to read more in the series, I found myself disappointed in the ending. The motive for the killings was convoluted and just didn't hold water. I also had to keep reminding myself of who the characters were because they all had such normal names: Jack, Michael, Stephen, Tony, Tom, Ben. Good, stolid names. Good stolid writing. As I think about it, I realize that this is my criticism of the book; it is good, stolid writing, but there is no flair to it. Her characters are like paper dolls, with nothing substantial to keep them standing.
Too convoluted and slow.......2006-01-27
The main characters are interesting and engaging, but their investigative skills leave a lot to be desired. So much of this mystery should have been figured out much earlier. It is very slow moving and barely kept my interest.
Book Description
Odysseus, home from the Trojan War, grows restless after his wife, Penelope, dies, and dreams of new conquests. Diomedes arrives to tell him of surviving Trojans who have settled in the far north, a land of golden-haired woman, and set up themselves as gods. Odysseus knows what he has to do, and prepares for one final voyage. One of the Greeks' greatest heroes journeys to a strange land filled with danger and adventure. He faces obstacles from the gods and meets old and new friends in this novel that tells what happened after the Trojan War and the Odyssey. His trip up the Rhine to the new kingdom of the Trojans is also a time for reflection on his life and the events that have shaped him, and made him into the warrior and man that he is. Deftly combining ancient myth and legend with a new spin on one of mythology's oldest characters, Edward S. Louis has woven a spellbinding story both of what might have been, and never could be.
Edward S. Louis lives in Wisconsin where he teaches and does scholarly work on early literatures. He and his wife, a painter, enjoy travel in Europe and practice Mediterranean cooking and amateur archeology.

exciting further adventures of Odysseus .......2005-05-25
Odysseus is home after fighting in the Trojan War and battling with gods, monsters, and the supernatural. He and his faithful wife Penelope celebrate the wedding of their oldest son, but it is a bittersweet reunion because they both know she is dying. After Penelope dies, Odysseus feels restless and wants to go on an adventure; the gods heed his call and send him a vision of a blond haired woman in the Northlands.
Several defeated Trojans also make their way to the Northlands and defeated the local tribes. The Trojans have created a new empire that is expanding. Odysseus and several Trojan War vets, their sons and even Achilles' grandson head north to stop the Trojans. On the sea voyage, they fight hostile enemies, make peace with Poseidon, and listen to Athena as they help the tribes with their advanced technology. Ultimately Odysseus must find the blond female who will teach him there is more to life than battle and killing.
Displaying guts, chutzpah, or lunacy, Edward S. Louis creates the further adventures of Odysseus following up on his Homeric role with the thousand ships, the burning of the towers, and the "gift" horse. Homer would agree that Mr. Louis stayed true with his original persona of the legendary Greek hero. The further adventures are exciting and well written as Odysseus turns from restless warrior to contented royal advisor.
Harriet Klausner
"What in Hades is a Lorelei?" asked Diomedes.......2005-05-17
This novel is what one would call a highly enjoyable read. It combines the genres of adventure, romance, epic, mythology, and comedy into a delightful stew of fantasy and realism.
The characters are drawn primarily from legend and are well rounded, living, and very human in their every action. I found it easy to identify with most of the characters, from the adventuring if somewhat lustful Odysseus to the singing and prophetic Orestes. Even the gods are true to their mythological origins--human enough to have desires, powerful enough to lend magic to the plot.
Narratively speaking, the story begins many years after Odysseus' return from the Trojan wars and ends with the end of his life.
The mythology which Mr. Louis weaves from the strands of Norse and the strands of Greek is simply astounding, giving that Ah Ha! at the end when they both finally come together. Names are played with and the Gods/Goddesses have strong background roles in the story. There is magic, prophesy, and a driving rhythm that is rarely found in this type of book.
One of the great joys for me was seeing the Greek heros adapting to the cultures that they had never before encountered. They engage in cultural dialogue which includes foods, drinks, names, gods, and family loyalties. They learn new languages, fall in love with new types of women, and create long lasting aliances with strangers.
There are a few slow spots, but if the reader continues reading, they are soon forgotten.
Altogether, the book is captivating, exciting, and speaks to a variety of ages.
Book Description
Each year, at least 2.3 million Americans suffer from severe bipolar disorder (manic depression), a brain disorder characterized by intense high and low moods, while an estimated 10–13 million others suffer from its milder forms. In Bipolar Disorder Demystified, author Lana Castle, who has lived the better part of her life with this illness, has turned her personal experience into an eloquent and useful guide to all those who travel down the same path. In clear and honest language, Castle helps readers understand the true nature of bipolar disorder, the factors that complicate its diagnosis, and strategies for coping with the illness. Bipolar Disorder Demystified makes great strides in dispelling the mystery surrounding this illness, helping readers decide if it’s time to seek treatment, and providing those with any form of mood disorder the information they need to better manage their lives.
Customer Reviews:
Trite, But Not Without Merit........2006-10-06
Bipolar Disorder Demystified is the third book I've read on the subject of Bipolar Disorder. It's an easily read book covering everything from depression to hypomania, medication to the importance of vitamin consumption. The information in this book is expansive almost to the point of unnecessary. The chapter on Biochemistry and Genetics was informative. The chapter on Personality and the "Quadrants" of Perfectionism was senseless.
Lana Castle's attempt at intertwining her personal experience with scientific knowledge was charming in the beginning of the book, but trite towards the end when she tells of joining a Quaker church only to leave due to a persistent suitor, or the excerpts of her journal which read like the rantings of a lunatic.
From what I've read, I'm guessing that Castle is a little flaky. I'm glad that she's been able to find the stability she needs in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, but it's mentioned more often that the importance of psychotherapy and medication compliance. The chapter on Exploring Nonmedical Options began with substance, but ended disappointingly with the mention of using massage and aromatherapy as viable options for this disorder. She suggest communing with nature to relieve stress, but then recommends tasting "the sweat that pours from your face after an aerobic workout", for reasons unknown.
The chapter on Creativity is extremely self-absorbed. Once again, it begins with good intentions, but disappointingly segues into a timeline of Castle's attempts at creativity and pretty much reads like a resume of her creative endeavors or like a child screaming "Daddy, look at me! Look at me!"
Overall, Bipolar Disorder Demystified isn't a terrible book. It's full of a variety of important information on dealing with this disorder and the destruction it can cause. The unevenness in joining her personal encounters and scientific or substantial information (for lack of a better word) is not entirely the fault of Lana Castle. The blame should be placed on the editor for not reining in her clearly self-absorb writing style. (She figuratively thumbs her nose at a former psychiatrist for shooting down her ambitions for being a writer! See pages 301-302).
If you roll your eyes when you see a hippie, or laugh at the though of using penny-royale to cure a flu, then this book is not for you. If you are a hippie and have yerba mate in your refrigerator you'll find this book right up your alley. I consider myself ¼ hippie and found this book useful at times, disappointing but not entirely without merit. If you can stomach the ego of Castle, then read this book. When she's not too busy staring at her reflection in the mirror Castle can be a solid writer.
An overly self-referential book without much research into the malady........2006-05-06
It's stunning to see that this book has earned a 4.5-star rating from readers, given the fact that only the first paragraph under each header has anything to do with BPD generally: the rest is all about how the author had sex with her car's stick shift (!), smoked pot or whatever else is related, if only tangentially, to the subject at hand. This makes for a very tedious read, as it appears she has done little, if any, research beyond a mostly regurgitated recollection of what she learned in her therapy sessions.
This is one embarrassingly creepy book. No, I didn't get past the third chapter--who wants to?
There are better books out there.
very helpful.......2005-09-26
i found the book to be very helpful and understanding; it was easy to read, which is very helpful for someone with bipolar disorder.
First book I've finished in 12 years!.......2004-10-31
This book was well written and EXTREMELY informative. Although I was a little disappointed at the author's constant need for medication as part of a solution, I understand that this recovery route was part of her personal story. This story, intertwined with great facts, was probably the perfect combination of humanity and science that made the over 400 page book incredibly easy to get through.
I am not a "reader", but would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about not only bipolar disorder, but other brain disorders as well.

Worth buying just for the waffle recipe.......2005-02-09
Make the most sublime waffles - crispy outside, creamy inside, and with a flavor that beats anything else. So good that my children want them even as plain unheated leftovers later in the morning.
A Cookbook Every Baker Should Own.......2004-06-20
I found a copy of this cookbook at a local used book store and mixed up a sourdough starter the following day. It was bubbling away the next morning and I can't wait to try it in a few more days...
The directions in this book are simple to follow. The anecdotes and history provided are entertaining. The recipes all sound delicious! I'll be working my way through many of these, starting of course with the sourdough hotcakes and bread. The handwritten format just adds to the charm of the book. If you're interested in learning to make sourdoughs, this book will give you all the information you'll need.
Cheechako to Sourdough in 190 Pages.......2001-02-25
My poor dogeared, stained copy of this book came to me by way of my dad and brother after their trip to Alaska in 1989. Dad acquired some starter in about 1959 that its guardian said had been going since the days of the 49ers. I know it's been bubbling since then. All Dad made, though, were bread and rubbery pancakes. He, unfortunately, didn't buy a copy for himself, although I'd give anything to have him make another meal of them! You see, that's the magic of sourdough, the romance, the stories, the memories! I've not yet been to Alaska, but Ruth Allman has taken me from Cheechako to Sourdough by generously sharing her recipes and her stories with me. I read this book just for the enjoyment of it sometimes. We had her waffles this morning. I made her Flower Rolls recipe into Danish rolls for my famously fussy father-in-law. What better tribute could I make to this cook and her book than to say that he loved them! My two year old son and I will make a little fire in the woods and bake a sourdough version of bannock in Dad's old Dutch oven this week and make some memories of our own.
Real Alaskan Sourdough.......2000-01-30
Ruth Allman has written an excellent book about Alaskan sourdough history and provided very tasty receipes. As a resident of Kodiak,Alaska I have been lucky enough to get some of Ruth Allmans sourdough starter. I have tried her receipes and all I can say is , wow! San Francisco look out. You get a real sense of the struggle of the pioneers with this book, and the way she describs the receipes, you can just imagine spreading the butter and jam on the bread. My favorite receipe is the hot griddle cakes with fresh strawberries. As Ruth says, the art of mixing the batter with air, and the timing of slopping it on the grill is a skill learned over time. The Baked Alaska with sourdough waffles (which by the way is how it was actually first made) is a dessert from heaven. This is a book that every sourdough making Alaskan owns.
True Alaskan cooking.......1999-12-21
I have been using this book since 1988, the eighth printing, and I can honestly say it is the best sourdough cookbook I have seen. The recipe's are easy to follow and the history lessons are entertaining as well. Ms. Allman has written a really fun book and I do mean written. The entire book is hand written ! Truly an Alaskan cookbook.

Book Description
A collection of humorous & odd tales of the north told by old timers & characters all around Alaska and the Yukon. These collected stories have been passed down from the Gold Rush and early days of the north, by past cronies and characters of a bygone era.
There are a few stories embellished by the sourdoughs who told them, but for the most part, they are authentic. These are the tales told by the light of a lantern in a cabin up some lonesome gulch where the warmth comes from the laughter echoing across the valleys.

fun with your dog.......2007-07-15
This is a really unique book. I've been a dog trainer for almost 50 years and never knew I could teach a dog to read. This book is a joy to read, very amusing in parts and not at all technical. Anyone could teach their dog to read at least two words if not many more by Dr Bergin's methods. They really work and are a fun way to spend quality time with your dog.
I have Border Collies and my 10 month old pup is learning to read this summer! I highly recommend this this book to anyone who loves and plays with their dog.
great expectations.......2007-01-04
I was very impressed with this book, and eager to "teach my dog to read". Everything is explained in a very simple way and you are even given an idea of the stages to expect as you are training your dog. This book offers a wealth of ideas, not only on teaching your dog to read, but also on using your dog to help children read. I was hoping to teach my dog one or two words....we're on number 7. Can't go wrong with this book.

If you have an affinity for beer in general and for Budweiser in particular, then rest assured, "This Book's for You!" As beer-lovers well know, Budweiser is the world-renowned brand that has been brewed and distributed by Anheuser-Busch for more than a hundred years. Its popularity is no less strong today than when it was first introduced in the late nineteenth century. It's no wonder that Budweiser memorabilia and collectibles are among those most favored and sought after by breweriana lovers today. Vintage Anheuser-Buschr celebrates the early years of this prolific and highly successful company, one which grew from a small St. Louis partnership into the prevailing leader of the brewing industry today. Over 400 beautiful color photos trace Anheuser-Busch's colorful advertising from the late 1800s through the mid-twentieth century, as depicted on lithographed prints, signs, trays, calendars, mugs, coasters, corkscrews, matchsafes, jewelry, and more. In addition to Budweiser, you'll find a host of items featuring other products from Anheuser-Busch, such as St. Louis Lager, Faust, Malt-Nutrine, Bevo, and Ginger Ale. Many of the items shown date from the company's earliest beginnings and have rarely been seen. Current values for all are included in the captions. This book is a nostalgic treat for beer-lovers everywhere, so pour yourself a cold one, sit back, and drink-er, read up!

An Anheuser-Busch Collector's Necessity.......2000-09-15
A beautifully put together book. It is mostly a picture guide of AB breweriana with a small but very informative amount of text. The book is divided into sections and most of the items pictured are dated in the captions. The prices quoted are almost all above the current market value. The variety of items covered, the historical information and the wonderful photos combine to make this volume a definite "must own".
Book Description
A vast array of daylily hybrids has been developed from only a small group of species in Hemerocallis. Hundreds of new daylilies are introduced each year, and no other book describes and illustrates so many of the hybrids in one place. The parent species are also included, but the focus is on the amazing developments that have been achieved through hybridization.
Close-up photographs show the detailed characteristics that hybridizers work for. Each photo is accompanied by a thorough description of the daylily's color, size, bloom season, and parentage. In addition to the pictorial encyclopedia, the book offers extensive information on cultivation and hybridization.

Book Description
This volume is an in-depth study of the short poetic cycle of Lygdamus, one of the authors included in Book III of the Corpus Tibullianum. The Introduction analyzes the controversial quaestio Lygdamea (identity and dating of the poet), the relationship between Lygdamus and his beloved, Neaera, the incorporation of his poems into the Corpus Tibullianum, and the manuscript tradition. This is followed by a rigorous critical edition (taking fully into account the earliest editions and conjectures). Finally, there is a detailed and exhaustive line-by-line and word-by-word commentary on each poem, paying particular attention to elegiac terms and motifs. This is the first comprehensive study of the work of Lygdamus, considered as a poet with his own literary identity.

Book Description
"De Tagle is a truly gifted storyteller and is able to capture her life and the political circumstances of her time with great bravado. I found her book funny, entertaining, amusing, joyful, and sad. A wonderful memoir." --Marjorie Agosin, Professor and Chair of Spanish, Wellesley College Lillian Lorca de Tagle is living proof of women's progress in the twentieth century. Born into a privileged, yet circumscribed world in 1914 as the daughter of a wealthy Chilean diplomat, she became a translator and journalist at a time when few women of her class held jobs. Ordered into exile in the United States by her disapproving mother, she became a successful reporter, translator, and editor, while raising two daughters as a single working mother. In this beautifully written memoir, de Tagle looks back over a fascinating, cosmopolitan life. She describes how her upbringing in various European capitals prepared her for a life of continual change. She remembers the restrictions that upper class Chilean society placed on women and how these ultimately propelled her to a career in the United States that included an editorship at Américas magazine and work for the State Department, as well as a series of posts with the USIA/Voice of America. Woven throughout her memoir are vivid glimpses of family, friends, husbands, and lovers, including the artist Roberto Matta. This spicy blend of personalities, work, and culture tells a quintessential coming-of-age story of a thoroughly modern woman.
