Pulp fiction enter 21st century.......2007-05-30
The classic PBOs in the 1950s tackled edgy crimes, tough situations, and tragic figures. Mr. Shubin's PBO, WITNESS TO MYSELF, is no different. That undoubtedly stems from the fact he's been at it since 1953 debut, ANYONE'S MY NAME. Philadelphia lawyer Alan Benning, 30, is an anguished individual who as a fifteen-year-old molested Susheela Kapasi, a thirteen-year-old girl. This deed racks Alan with guilt for fifteen years. He manages to fall in love with his LPN, Anna Presiac, and discovers Susheela was found murdered by her father on the same day. The story tracks Alan's investigation to determine if he's Susheela's actual killer. Alan's cousin Colin, a true crime writer, is the sympathetic, puzzled narrator though he ponders if publishing Alan's crime story might make for a lucrative book deal (so true for any commercial writer). On the other hand, Alan probably won't endear many hearts. This psychological study of a criminal mind is a well-paced and intelligent read.
Not your typical Hard Case.......2006-06-20
After reading like 4 of them I was expecting something classic. What I got was a entertaining, well written book. So why am I giving it two stars? Well it should have been published under some other company or come with a better warning.
As other people have mentioned, this book does not fit Hard Cases traditional genre. There is no "real violence". No twists, no turns, no robberies, no tough guys... Just one man conflicted about a possible murder told through the 3rd person.
I ding it because it isn't tradiontal noir. It is a solid book, don't get me wrong. It just ain't a "Two for the Money" or a "Fade to Blonde".

"Witness To Myself" and Obsession.......2006-05-30
Adolescence is a hard perplexing time ripe with strange thoughts, strange feelings, and impetuous actions with little consideration of the consequences. It certainly was fifteen years ago for teenager Alan Benning. His family, on vacation in Cape Cod by way of a large motor home, had no idea what he thought or felt. The family was well off, his parents were conservative and Alan, with no one to talk to about life and his feelings, began to hate and fear himself. That hatred and fear of himself grew and grew after the incident in the woods near the beach during that vacation.
In the present day, Alan, now thirty is a successful lawyer with a steady girlfriend, Anna, a loving cousin, and an obsession about what might or might not have happened that fateful day fifteen years ago. Driven to know, he begins to unravel his own perfect life. A life that appears to be perfect but hides so many dark secrets that he is not sure of what actually happened back then.
Author Seymour Shubin has weaved a complete tale about the human spirit. Shifting in point of view between Alan and his cousin the author paints a picture of obsession. Not only is Alan obsessed with what he might or might not have done but the cousin has his own obsession. The cousin's need isn't as obvious early in the novel but the end of the book it is clear that his own obsession is just as strong.
It is also clear that the author is commenting on the nature of mankind. Those little things that surely lead to disaster. Those little things, unnoticed or unremarked at the time and yet become telling through the use of hindsight. The signs were obvious, as they often are, and unnoticed until long after the fact. The author makes this point throughout the work as he weaves complex multifaceted characters throughout the tale.
The result is a fast paced intense read. While only 250 pages in paperback, this isn't a beach book and far from it. This is a book that rapidly becomes a real page turner as it pulls the reader into a world not unlike his or her own. This is a book that one doesn't want interrupted and is sorry to see end. Intense and driven, the book doesn't let go until that final phrase "the end" and even then lingers in the mind.

Hard Case Bore.......2006-05-18
If you've been following Hard Case Crime, you know they've put together a distinguished catalog of noir novels. One assumes their publication of a very bad novel by Stephen King was a deliberate mistake aimed directly at the bottom line. But there is no excuse for the Shubin book. There is no complexity, no twists, nothing going on beneath the surface, no surprises, no relationship of any kind with the traditional noir gestures. Anything suggestive of there being more going on than meets the eye, proves to be digressions that signify nothing. The characters are bland and unintersting and the plot almost nonexistent. A fifteen year old boy sexually abuses a twelve year old girl and then kills her. Fifteen years later he turns himself in and goes to prison. Big deal. If he had turned himself in at once, this book wouldn't exist, and we would all be better off.
unreadable - a new low.......2006-04-13
WHY doesn't Amazon.com let you rate a book Zero Stars?
This disappointing effort is the worst of the Hard Case Crime series. Unreadable: after 30 pages I just flipped through the rest. But it does contain a tip for murderers: Never show up at the local library and ask to see back issues of the newspaper detailing your crime which will cause you to freak out and attract everyone's attention.

My review on the book Myself as Witness.......2000-04-27
I liked the book Myself as Witness for the most part. This book is about King John of England. It does a very good job of showing King John as a real person. It is also interesting because it is written from the perspective of a former clergyman. Many battles take place in this book, and it is a little difficult to keep track of everything. For the most part it is a very good book.

...........2007-03-02
If you are an avid reader and like books with enough depth and basis in reality of character to make a book interesting and characters more realistic then this is NOT the book for you. The back of the book sounded good because I loved books like Tailchaser's Song, Watership Down, and Firebringer. This book, however, was only like those books in that it has Anthropomorphization. The animals are not believable because it seems the author only did surface research on the animals she's using as characters (Eagles do not point. Im sorry, they don't. Numerous other aspects are ludicrous and unbelievable for animal characters). Also this book is very fluffy right down to the lovely line "open your heart and believe in magic!". Aspects of the books characters are introduced without explanation (one of the main human characters magically heals one of the non human characters and it isn't explained how, or how he got these powers other than the line "Anything can happen if you just believe!").
The ONLY part I liked of the book was the mythos of creation the author came up with. It was very interesting and creative even if it was very similar to actual mythos from other belief systems and fantasy belief systems. That portion despite that was enjoyable.
If you want a good animal book to read then read Watership Down (if you haven't already), Tailchaser's Song, or Firebringer. They're good books that are creative and fun. And the deer don't point to things with their hooves.
an inspiring tale.......2000-12-25
This has a great mix of fantasy aspects. In the way of Watership Down, we're allowed into the animal's world, a world under threat by humans who would hunt the cougars to extinction, and other animals who are a threat. But we also meet humans who have more than the average connection to creature-speak, and human politics (but never in a boring way). This inspiring book really does make you think about what's going on in the natural world, at the same time entertaining and fun to read. I've read it several times, and each time I think I learn a little more.
A puma and an eagle look for love and friendship.......1998-03-05
Lanakila (the bald eagle) and Sarena (the mountain lion) find themselves entering into a friendship, as the pain of loneliness brings these two creatures together. This has been my favourite book since 1992, and I greatly enjoyed the animal characters. Bald eagle characters are very hard to find in animal fantasy fiction. But more importantly about this novel is the friendship that two animals have, and the fun, teasing, and loving relationship that Lanakila has for his friend Sarena. There is a human story counter-part occurring in the novel, but the animal characters stick out prominently for me. It is a VERY great read. A novel that I enjoy highly.
An excellent book.......1997-09-01
I bought this book in an airport, looking for something to read on the plane. Little did I know that I was going to read one of my FAVOURITE books of all times.I am not a fantasy type person, but this was so well written, and had been so well thought out, that I have read it at least ten times. It is about a puma and an eagle, a reporter and a rock star, whose lives all ultimately intertwine. The best aspect of this book was definitely the great conveyance on the author's part of each of these animals. You felt you knew every inch of them, physically, mentally, and metaphysically. Advice, if you don't like animals, this won't be a good book for you!

So easy to understand.......2007-03-17
This book is excellent for the beginner! I just recently started skating and take weekly group lessons. This book has helped me greatly by providing specific excercises to put into my practice sessions which in turn have made me feel like I am finally "getting" the whole concept of edges and especially the crossover maneuver. I highly recommend this book for the beginning skater.
Great introduction for beginners and intermediate skaters.......2001-07-23
Co-authored by a master teacher and her adult student (a med school prof), this first-rate book concentrates on beginning and intermediate skills. Among the things to recommend it are:
- Extremely clear writing, including clear and readable explanations of body mechanics
- Good organization: a series of lessons, each concluding with a checklist and a troubleshooting table
- Good illustrations: line drawings, made from photographs of co-author Kunzle-Watson, that clearly illustrate body and skate position for each skill
In conclusion: highly recommended!
GOOD FOR BEGINNERS..........2000-01-06
I found this book to be very helpful as a beginner skater my first year. I appreciated the usefull checklist to test the basic moves. The diagrams could have been a little clearer. Other than that I would recommend this book for beginner figure skaters.
Easy reading, thorough, and all in all a great book!.......1999-11-18
The pictures and illustrations are fantastic. Shows step by step on how to execute beginning moves from crossovers to three turns, and mohawks. Only thing I wish it covered were some basic jumps and spins.
Truly like having your own coach!!.......1999-02-24
Even though this was published in 1995-I hope they keep this on the printing press hotlist. This book is one of the most worthwhile books of it's genre. It's not just informative, explaining techniques(though it does that, too)It offers a highly structure program that can adjust according to your ability and proficiancy. It focus's on the basics that many skaters sorely need but lack nowdays. Amust have!

Customer Reviews:
Absorbing and Informative.......2004-10-04
Jacques Rolland has undertaken a herculean task here, for compiling a cook's dictionary is harder than ever today. Only a couple of decades such a book would cover the bare bones of American cooking, throw in a lot of French and a little Italian, and that would be that. These days we have a few extra cuisines to deal with-- Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican--and at the same time the old America-French-Italian triad must needs be treated in greater depth.
So granting that the task is physically impossible (even could such a book be assembled, no one could pick it up without a forklift), it must be admitted that Rolland has done a terrific job. He not only explains, defines and identifies without letup or surcease for more than 400 pages, he does it briskly and informatively: What he tells you will stick with you. And he lards his definitions with lore and tradition as well. In all, this book is not only useful but entertaining, which is what food itself should be. There are good black-and-white illustrations (drawings, not photos), and too bad there aren't more of them. Still, this book is a pleasure just to dip into now and then for a quick "snack," and it belongs on the nightstand as well as in the kitchen. Might be a good idea to buy two copies, come to think of it.--Bill Marsano is a James Beared Award-winning writer of wine and spirits, and a determined if somewhat dangerous home cook.
Book Description
Zebra finches are very close to wild birds in their behaviors, and the natural history and behavior of these birds is discussed in detail. Zebra finches mate for life and do not do well living alone, so most often they are purchased in pairs. The book takes this into consideration right from the start, and all care and handling information is offered for two or more birds. This includes detailed information on breeding, which is extremely popular with owners of exotic finches. Proper housing, routine care, and in-depth information on nutrition and feeding are included. Possible health problems are also covered.
A Resource section provides information on birds clubs, books and magazines and useful Internet sites.

Great photos and good descriptions.......2006-02-01
Just what the novice barbie collector needs! I was pulling my hair out trying to tell one case from the next. This really helped me identify which of my cases were vintaigge and valuable. The book more than paid for it's self by the time I sold my first case.
Fabulous!.......2000-05-31
This book is absolutely WONDERFUL! I purchased this book to use as a handbook referral guide when I was buying up vinyl Barbie cases on Ebay for my collection. It is absolutely the "bible" for Barbie vinyl cases: the pictures are invaluable, & the information given is gold. If you are a serious Barbie vinyl collector, you MUST have this book--I would highly recommend to any Barbie collector!
Collector's Guide to Barbie Doll Vinyl Cases.......2000-01-10
This book was extremely helpful in identifying all the vintage Barbie cases and the different variations. With the help of this book I was able to indentify and purchase several rare cases. I would recommend this book to all serious Barbie collectors! Many thanks to Connie Craig Kaplan for writing this book!
A Must-Have for Doll Case Collectors.......1999-05-20
Kaplan uses just the right blend of pictures and commentary to make this book an absolute "must-have" for the Barbie doll case collector. From the very first case all the way through the generic early '70's cases, Kaplan has it covered. There are mentions of late '60's vinyl lunchboxes, and she even displays coin purses, pencil pouches, and room/structures that double as cases. It doesn't appear as though she missed a thing in the genre. Kaplan has created a superb and interesting book with realistic prices that will not only entertain and help the reader reminisce; but, it will also have you running to your attic to see if you still have that old case of yours in the corner. Terrific!

Customer Reviews:
Like shopping with a friend. Fun and informative........2005-09-03
Ruah Donnelly's informative and easy banter make this guide a pleasure to use. The Adventurous Gardener covers NY and NJ's plant suppliers for the afficianado. I used it to visit my now favorite garden shop: the Peconic Herb Farm (talk about a labor of love!). I'm slightly concerned that the material might become dated, but Donnelly seems to have chosen farms, suppliers, and centers with longevity in mind. Her quotes from the owners' themselves and the little factoids she includes made the text entertaining and I was eager to meet (or observe) the shops and their owners. Nicely done. My only complaint is that the listings are alphabetical within each region. And while each region has a map, I'd love it if the listings followed a driving order whether east to west or north to south, but that's because I hate using Mapquest to organize my trips. Or Donnelly could include more detailed maps within those regions showing how proximate the farms or centers are to each other. (Ease my navigation pains!) But that's nitpicking; The Adventurous Gardener has served me well.

Out of Eldridge Street
Rabbi Harold Finkelstein Swiss
Manufacturer: Morris Publishing
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 0739200402 |
Book Description
"Out of Eldridge Street" is Rabbi Harold Swiss' memoirs of his childhood years living with his orthodox Jewish grandparents in the lower east side of NYC in the 1920s. His handicapped grandfather was a street beggar, but from his childhood experiences he derived a wholesome Jewish education. His poignant tale includes his oddysey searching for his mother. "Out of Eldridge Street" describes the alienation, poverty and loneliness of a young boy, but ends with the love and joy of finding his mother.
Customer Reviews:
A Depression Era Childhood Revisited.......1999-10-29
Abandoned by his mother at the age of seven, Rabbi Harold Swiss lived in poverty with his grandparents, surviving on the few pennies his grandfather earned as a beggar with no legs. Times were hard. It was cold in the winter. And young Harold was often hungry. But he was loved. And his life was rich with the rituals of the synagogue and his growing understanding of the world around him.
Rabbi Swiss writes with passion, forcing the reader to feel the emotions of young Harold as he yearns for his mother, studies Judaism, and turns his eyes to the very real human beings who make up his community. I can never forget the hunchback outcast who delivered coal but had once been a concert pianist in Russia, the communistic rhetoric of the agnostic in the tea room which served as place to socialize and escape the dreary streets, the Negro superintendent who taught young Harold to box as well as a valuable lesson in humanity.
These were the days before even the rudiments of welfare, and if families couldn't pay the rent, they were forced to live right out on the street with their furniture, shivering in the cold while still trying to keep their dignity. Young Harold was one of the fortunate ones because there was always a roof, if nothing else, over his head. The tight-knit community believed in charity though. And no matter how poor they were, there was always a bit of soup or a piece of bread for the needy.
Against this background, young Harold grew and observed the world with the wonder of youth and the eyes of compassion. He had a spark of rebelliousness too. He shocked the community when he diverted from his prepared bar mitzvah speech. He stole some money that the mob had hidden and bought himself treats. He had sexual yearnings as he grew into manhood.
The book could have used some more careful editing, but this is minor criticism. There's lessons in humanity on every page as well as rich and well-developed characters. The story captured a neighborhood and a time in history that is unknown to most people and I wish it could be made into a screenplay in order to bring that particular era in focus.

A poignant tale of life on the Lower East Side of New York........1999-07-29
I agree with the review from Aufbau magazine, which said: Out of Eldridge Street, by Rabbi Harold Swiss, teaches us the lesson that to be a good Jew it is necessary to not only study the Torah and Talmud and pray three times daily, but to practice that which we learn from the Torah and care about those around us, regardless of the color of their skins or their religion.
