Great mammal guide for the tourist........2001-04-02
Similar in layout to the other New Holland guides. Thereby making it obvious that it is not intended for the scientist. Small and handy, perfect for a pocket. However, do not think it only covers a small number of the best known mammals. Several newly discovered mammals are included (e.g. a strange ungulate called the Saola, and a beautifully striped rabbit only discovered in the late 1990's). Most of these are interesting but would never be encountered by the "normal backpacker". Several rarities are also included for example the Lesser One-horned Rhino, of which it is believed that only approx. 60 individuals survives. Almost all of the larger mammals known to occur in this region are described individually with at least one (usually very good) colour photo. The small number of large species not described are almost always mentioned in the description of a relative. The smaller mammals (bats, insectivores etc.) are described in groups (also with at least one photo) usually comprising a genus. The text is strait forward and easy to read for everybody with average English skills. However do not forget your glasses, the text is very small! The text itself is good and actually quite long with the books size in mind. It usually comprises of id, range (no maps!), behaviour, habitat etc. Each species description (incl. photo) comprises 2-1/2 page. A great thing for the novice is the use of easily recognisable thumbnails (an example being deer). Thereby it shouldn't be a problem finding the species your looking for. In the intro of the book a chapter speaks about finding and observing mammals, and 31 national parks or reserves are also mentioned briefly. The thing I find most annoying is the very small number of dark or unclear photos. Another thing to remember is that the book doesn't included whales or dolphins other than the one species which regularly enters fresh water. With the prise and size in mind everybody travelling to this area should bring a copy.

Excellent for the beginning photographer!.......2001-07-10
I teach photography to high school and college. I am the president of a camera club. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE STARTING OUT IN PHOTOGRAPHY!!! It is the easiest book to understand out of EVERY photography book on the market. I only wish it were around years back when I was starting out. His explanation of manual photography is soooo easy to comprehend it is like cheating. I do feel the title limits you to believe you will only learn about nature photography; While this is partly true, you will learn techniques that will overlap in many other areas. I hope you will trust this review and buy this book. You will not be sorry! HAPPY PICTURE TAKING!
A great book to keep for oneself or give to a friend........1999-07-22
This book is just what a novice as well as a practiced photographer needs to develop and refine their skills! A book I wish I had seen when first taking up photography. It takes the person from the intuitive approach to the "informed eye" for capturing our visual world. The format of the book is well suited to the content: a good mix of written content and pictures. there is not too much narrative on any one page and the material is written concisely and clearly. The selecgted quotes from the text and the "Quick Tips" are well chosen and catch the reader's attention to make their point. The photos demonstrate the author's points and the quality of reproduction of both color and black and white pictures are of great quality in a book of this price range. A great book to keep or give to a friend!

An absolute must for any die hard Cub fan! A work of tremendous research providing the entire Cubs history, great (not-so-great)and forgotten players, teams through the years, the cub faithful and the history of Wrigley Field. I ordered 10 copies and passed them out to my friends. Even if you're not a Cubs fan, you will enjoy the author's fun presentment of facts and his enlightening statistical analysis about this original NL franchise. Bravo to Doug Myers.
Comprehensive, insightful and humorous for any baseball fan........1999-09-25
This book is great reading for any baseball fan, regardless of whether you're a cubs fan (which I'm not). The reader receives the benefit of what must have been an enormous amount of research into not just the statistic achievement of the franchise, but also of the personalities of the people who created the history and the circumstance in which they made their marks. In addition, the information is conveyed in a manner that is easy and fun to consume.

Really fun and cute book!.......2003-12-28
I had fun flipping through this book and reading phrases in all sorts of languages, including Latin, some of which I found I had the wrong idea of what they meant! If you've studied say German, you'll recognize and know the simple phrases in that chapter, but there's still French, Italian and so on to learn from.
Incredibly useful book.......2003-04-22
I love Le Mot Juste. My 1987 edition copy is well-worn. It is good to see that the book is continuing to be updated. Sylvester Mawson's original version was published in 1934!
Nearly always, I have been successful in finding expressions I have looked up in these pages. But, if you are like me, a lover of lists, you will enjoy browsing when you are not hunting for the meaning of a word.
In my edition, the definitions are not separated into language groups, which means you don't have to know which language the expression comes from. But I would guess that most users of the book would have some idea of the likely section to hunt in. Could be confusing with Italian and Spanish, though!
Recommended for all lovers of language.

In a world where many foreign words and phrases have become increasingly common in both spoken and written English, this book is almost a necessity.
It clarifies numerous words and phrases from Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and Yiddish that are used, and just as often, misused, by English speakers and writers.
A few examples:
Under French we find "maison de societe" which literally translates to society house. I had always thought that this must refer to the manor in which some rich or powerful personage resided. No way! It really means a brothel. That's a good one not to misuse.
Here's another from the French language: How many of us know that "bel air" means poise, grace, or good deportment?
Any of us who have ever followed a court case have probably heard the Latin expression "in camera." That literally translates to "in a room," but really means "proceedings conducted in secret."
Now for one from the Italian. We have often heard that someone is a dilettante and most of us probably have some vague sense of what the word means, but how many of us could accurately define dilettante if asked? I'd hazard a guess that the honest answer would be "very few." A dilettante is an amateur, particularly an amateur lover of the arts, but there is a subtler nuance to the word. It also means that this amateur is one who approaches the subject with little or no serious study, and may well pretend to have more knowledge than he actually has.
This is just the surface. LE MOT JUSTE defines and discusses such disparate words and phrases as "Kung Fu," "Pandora's Box," "Nabob." "Kismet, Kimono, and Kibitzer," to name but a few. It also emphasises the nuances that often give the words and phrases their fuller meaning.
It's a good book for any literate person's book shelf.

Too pessimistic.......2005-11-20
It's now known -- after a comprehensive Chinese-U.S. panda census carried out between 2001 and 2003/2004 -- that there are over 1,600 giant pandas left in the wild. The previous, oft-quoted estimate of "fewer than 1,000" was way too low. The benefit of hindsight on the part of a recent reader of this book, by naturalist George Schaller, makes this book less than believable. Schaller spends much time criticizing the Chinese government as well as Western governments for what he perceives to be ignorance and apathy toward the "plight" of the giant panda. But, one must ask, if he had indeed spent more time researching pandas instead of writing numerous books -- seriously, no matter how smart you are, the amount of waking hours, and working hours, you have are always limited, not to mention the amount of time one must expend in order to travel to the remote areas Schaller has -- Schaller should have known, or found out, that 1) there were more pandas out there in the wild, and 2) several Chinese research institutions, including Wolong Nature Reserve, had already made ground-breaking discoveries in captive breeding by the time this paranoid book was published.
Granted, Schaller seems to have felt a great deal for the giant panda. I don't doubt his sincerety. But by bluntly criticizing others -- and forgetting that conservation takes a lot of money, money to protect the animals, money to research into the animals, and money to help locals escape poverty without resorting to poaching and logging -- he trivializes the amount of effort needed to preserve the panda or any other endangered species. His blindness to what officials in China and in the West, including those at the WWF (where he now works), had already been doing is simply disheartening and misinforming.
Moving and highly readable.......2005-08-30
This book left me with a feeling one has after seeing a very moving film--sad, but reflective and motivated. I'll think about this book and any global conservation partnership differently now. The Last Panda gives equal time to the ecology and lives of wild pandas, but also to the difficulties of forging an international conservation project between Western and Eastern cultures, in this case the WWF and the Chinese government. Bureacratic apathy, even malfeasance, differing ideas of what constitutes "research" and even sad grasps at publicity using pandas as pawns disrupt and ultimately damage the precious few pandas in the study. Schaller's droll voice lends a small bit of humor to what must have been an extreme challenge in self-control when dealing with the friction between involved parties. This is not an uplifting success story, but almost rather a story of candid warning of the realities of forging global partnerships in any realm. Ultimately, concerned citizens, researchers, NGOs and governments have to remember why we're all involved: not for personal glory or public relations, but to save the endangered animal.
A comprehensive study of the life of the giant panda........1998-10-16
In this book, George Schaller depicts the giant panda of China not only as a "cute" and lovable creature, but that it is also in a struggle to overcome extinction. I enjoyed reading this book because George Schaller writes down his most inner thoughts and feelings regarding the panda project in China. He does not hold anything back from the reader. From reading this book, I learned about the plight of the panda that other books have failed to mention.

Not as good as I had expected (or hoped).......2004-10-06
Is there anything nearer paradise on earth than a Capability Brown garden stretching into the distance around an English stately home? Gardening has always been a specialty of the English, and a must for the aristocracy. This book attempts to document the most memorably successful results found on country estates. Attempts, I say, because catching the essence of a garden in a photograph is not an easy task, and one at which the makers of this book do not entirely succeed, in my opinion. To be sure there are some impressively atmospheric images here; of the Mausoleum at Castle Howard for instance, or some mysteriously misty takes at Haddon Hall.
Other images however are harshly, unnaturally colored, with reds leaping of the page. Some have artificially added blue skies, most notably that of the garden at Sudeley Castle, which looks like a cheap Seventies postcard. There is a graininess to the pictures as well, and some are printed out of focus. Thicker, glossy paper would have helped. All in all not what you would expect of such a highbrow (and high price) publisher like Rizzoli. An additional disappointment is that because 100 gardens are covered, we get to see only one or two images of each of them - the book only has just over 200 pages. To enjoy a really successful garden book of this kind, I would advise you to look out for the dazzling, newly published "The Gardens at Buckingham Palace" by Brown and Sykes.

A must have for a newsletter specialist!.......1999-12-18
In all the books I have on newsletter design, this has been the most beneficial! It offers many great examples in full color stating what each design has to offer. It has lots of tips and addresses each part that goes into newsletters from nameplates to the mailing panel. I wish they would come out with a new one!
Great for Designing Newsletter Style Websites!.......1998-08-02
Good design and layout is important for the success of any Website. Websites are created to share information of one sort or another and do not follow any one design pattern. One popular design format for sharing information online that we should be familiar with is the newsletter style that is intended to communicate information in similar fashion as the common newsletters we get in the mail. Most news reporting Websites use this same format. Mark Beach and Elaine Floyd have written Newsletter Sourcebook to offer readers plenty of sample layouts and creative newsletter design assistance.
The book measures 8 1/2" by 11" and contains many full-colored examples of newsletter layouts and design tips. Many of the samples can be easily adapted for Website design purposes. Although this book is not intended to deal entirely with Website design principles, the placement of graphic images, the effective use of colors, the creative use of columns, the struc! ture of text, and font selection can assist Website designers to produce top-notch newsletter Websites. A number of Website screen shots are provided to display the impact made by online newsletters.
With a little re-working this book could easily pass for a Website design handbook. The advantages of using this book are crystal clear. The authors have been in the newsletter business for many years. This book is proof of it. Their experience is demonstrated by the detailed work exhibited throughout. Anyone can achieve similar results. Additionally, when time is short the Website designer can quickly thumb through this book for easy ideas to put to use. All that is necessary is basic knowledge of HTML programming and/or the use of good Website design software programs.
Begin creating newsworthy Websites, newsletters, and other forms of promotional literature for yourself and for others with this great resource book today. This is a must-have book!

I subscribe to the before & after website and decided to buy this book based on my satisfaction with that membership. The book has great design information. It's so helpful to have the here's what it looked like before and here's how it could be better aspects. It really helps me in my design work.

This book is wonderful for designers new to design. It teaches you the basics rules and gives plenty of examples (before and after) of how to arrange elements and type.
Very "eye catching" solutions! I am an illustrator & this is a wonderful way to enhance and round out my creativity in my illustrations. A definite must for someone new.
