Cute when Cubs.......2003-01-26
"Bears are curiously appealing to man. We like to think of them as wise, friendly, gentle animals, perhaps like grown-up teddy bears. Scientist who have studied them tell another story." Pg. 9
There is hardly anything that will turn me to a piece of melted butter like kittens and bear cubs. I am absolutely captivated when nature shows reveal the cuteness of baby animal life.
Little rolly-polly bears soon grow up into strong and destructive forces which don't enjoy being caged or tethered and can become bored and aggressive. So, cats it will have to be for me. Bears also have uncertain tempers while cats are mostly always friendly.
The following topics each have two pages: The bears and their relations, Giant cave bears, Eurasian brown bears, Siberian brown bears, Grizzly bears, Kodiak bears, Polar bears, Wanderers of the North, Family Life, American black bears, Asian black bears, Sloth bears, Sun bears, Spectacled bears, Giant pandas, Bears and man, Bears at risk and Saving the bears.
Each bear is pictured in its own environment and is given two pages with full-color illustrations.
Fact File - On the left upper corner of the page, shows order, family, Latin name, color, length, height, weight and range.
Interesting Fact - is next on the left hand section below fact file.
In the center of the page, a picture of the bear and information on the actual bear being discussed.
Bear Watching Around The World - a section introducing subjects like:
How bears began, How bears became scarce, Where can we see grizzly bears, Behavior: how bears live together and Bears and Early humans.
Well until I can have a bear as a pet, I'll just stick to sleeping with a teddy bear. ~:>

Fictional life, according to Jack Bickham, is better than real life. You don't get struck by lightning. You are not subject to random acts of cruelty. Events proceed logically. On the other hand, Bickham says, "In fiction, the best times for the writer--and reader--are when the story's main character is in the worst trouble." Not good if you're a fictional character. The 38 Most Common Fiction Writing Mistakes is as engaging as Bickham wants your fiction to be. It is sharp, focused, funny, and pointed. And it is demanding. Bickham, who has written over 65 novels and several fiction-writing guides, has little patience for wannabes. "Writers write," Bickham says. "Everyone else makes excuses." Bickham's pronouncements are decidedly negative: "Don't Describe Sunsets," advises one chapter; "Don't Write About Wimps"; "Don't Let [Your Characters] Be Windbags"; and "Don't Worry What Your Mother Will Think." But his lessons are positive. Behind each dictum is a terse, entertaining, and utterly well-reasoned examination of why the problem is a problem, and what you can do to expunge it from your prose. --Jane Steinberg
Customer Reviews:
Good for the Absolute Novice.......2007-06-06
This book has the advantage of being short and sweet; it is aimed at the complete beginner and is a good primer as far as it goes.
However, for the intermediate or more advanced writer, there's not much here other than something of a stroll down memory lane as you recall the old days of Creative Writing 101. While the writer's advice is often good in general, his dogmatic "one-size-fits-all" approach will leave many perfectly good writers feeling constricted. (Some opinions put forth as gospel truth in this book include: "A book can only have one viewpoint character." "Every scene must start with a stimulus/response -- and a character choosing to act does NOT count as a stimulus." "Every scene should end in a 'disaster' that puts your character further into trouble.")
So overall, it's worth reading, particularly for the newbie -- but take everything in it with a big grain of salt. Think of it as a source of "rules you need to know before you break them."
Very helpful What-Not-To-Do guide for beginners.......2006-09-18
When you're writing your first novel, you panic. I know I am. So much to worry about, so many rules and techniques you're probably not even aware of. So many how-to books to read, just to get started! Then you come across this book, and it puts you more at ease. It covers 38 aspects of writing, what-not-to-do's, in a succint and clear manner. It's easy to read, and very helpful. If you need to get deeper into some of those points, you can take it from there.
A. D. Tarbox, Freelance Reviewer for the Midwest Book Review.......2006-08-13
As a writer I am always looking to improve, which was why I chose to read this book. The writer does an excellent job explaining the mistakes and explaining how to avoid them. He writes, "Writers are a favorite subject for cartoonists, from Charles Schults of Peanuts fame to those who contribute to the New Yorker. (You can't blame them for picking on writers; we are sort of weird.)" Maybe I am a little weird to like to write, as he says, but there is nothing weird about this book. It brings up good points, 38 of them, which I think can only aide a writer. Bickham is the author of over 75 published novels. This book is on my reference shelf, by my desk so I can easily refer to it, to double check if I am making one of the "38 most common fiction writing mistakes."
A. D. Tarbox, author of ALREADY ASLEEP, THE SPANISH PIRATE, and six non-fiction children's books to be released fall 2008
Basic Advice and Lots of Personal Opinions.......2005-07-11
Bickham lists 38 sound principles to keep in mind while writing fiction, but he is pretty dogmatic in his approach. A disclaimer like, "Great writers break these rules sometimes, but it is a good idea to learn the rules before you break them," would be appropriate.
Following his 38 rules will help you write a formulaic genre piece of the sort Bickham writes. Formulaic genre pieces are fine, but he seems to think they are the end all be all of literature. When he does mention major writers who break his rules, they are usually older writers, and he tends to say not simply that their way of writing has gone out of fashion but that it has actually been replaced by something more sophisticated--as though previous generations of writers were just paving the way for our current golden age. On page 14 he even quotes Homer as an example of bad writing.
Bickham's rants against English teachers, writing groups, and people who quote great authors on how to write (The nerve of thinking Hemingway or Faulkner might have something useful to say on the topic of writing!) detract from the book, but his 38 principles are still good ideas to keep in mind--although following them rigidly will lead to formulaic fiction.
DISCLAIMER: I'm just a lit. professor, one of those ivory tower types Bickham does not think highly of. Maybe everything he says is true and I just don't get it.
A laundry list of things every writer should know.......2005-02-11
Jack doesn't spend more than three pages on any one point, and he doesn't have to. He gives an example, explains the salient concepts including positive suggestions, and gets out. This book taught me more about writing than any other. I devoured it in two days and my stories reached a new plateau immediately afterwards. If I could give every aspiring writer one book, this would be it.

Learn how to insure a healthy foal, what happens during delivery, and unexpected problems that can develop in foals. Handling foals and how to deal with mares that reject their newborns are also discussed. A practical, useful guide that answers most of the common questions about foal growth and health.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference for horse breeders.......2007-03-08
This book not only brings the complexity of foaling to the average horse owner but it really prepares you for what to expect from a foal along with some of the complications that can arise. I won't ever let this book leave my stable.
Written in easy to understand and use format!.......2003-09-17
I bought this book after purchasing a pregnant mare, our first horse as well! The book made me very confident that I could handle whatever happened and that I would know when I needed help. I have referred back to the book many times since the foal was born but I would only recommend this book to someone who will be involved in the actual foaling. It would be of minimum help in raising a foal unless it was an orphan. Focuses mainly on the first couple weeks of life.

The Must Have Bible for Purse Collectors!.......2000-09-02
If you are a serious purse collector, you really can't live without Mrs. Haerigs' purse book! This huge volume displays extensive full color photos of more purses than you can even imagine. The copy helps fill in some of those gaps in your knowledge and helps you figure out which purses are rare enough to spend the big bucks on! There only a few draw backs. In a couple of places, the wrong picture is reffered to in the text and you have to flip around until you find what is being refered to. Some of the text also seems to wander abit and lose focus. However, these flaws are easily outweighed by the sheer volume of pictures and the fact that the book is written by the pre-eminent authority on purses. Take a deep breath and fork out the greens, you can't become a real collector without this book at hand!!
Book Description
This photo gallery of the best maples for garden use is a complement both to Maples of the World and to J. D. Vertrees's Japanese Maples, since more than a third of the book is devoted to Acer palmatum, including many new and unusual cultivars. The photographs, taken in locations in seven countries, demonstrate the wonderful diversity of form, color, and size that makes maples so useful in gardens of every kind.
Customer Reviews:
Color Buffet.......2006-07-14
Color choices, complete growth patterns and more information than the casual gardener can cope with make this an excellent reference.
The only book on maples you'll ever need.......2006-05-11
What a refief. After perusing at least twenty books on maple trees, I came across this gem. It is hands-down the most extensively researched book on the subject I've ever come across. There are hundreds of pictures which are extremely useful; many books will give only 4 or 5 pictures for an entire species. It contains an exhausting amount of information that proved invaluable in making my decision about which acer to plant. Once I discovered this book, my research days were over.
Tons of good info./ pics for maples and Japanese maples!!.......2000-11-01
I was looking for a good reference book on maples and Japanese maples, and was seriously considering both this one and Vertrees' book on Japanese maples. However, since this book included both types of maples, I considered it to be the better value. Also, this book has 683 color photos, and one third of the book is dedicated to Japanese maples, while Vertrees has 250 color photos and is dedicated only to Japanese maples. I still may buy Vertrees book as well, but if you are trying to choose between them, I'd go with this one. I spent many pleasurable hours just thumbing through the descriptions and gorgeous photos of maples.

The Best book I've read.......2003-04-11
The author writes well, and explains well in her writing. I could actually picture myself in numerouse places which she had explained. From The war time, to her weding day, to what she went through during her sisters death.
fantastic :o).......1999-05-14
...a truly excellent real-life story of tragedy and love.
I loved this book. It is truly touching........1999-05-07
The amazing things that the author went through throughout her life were very uplifting. I laughed and cried throughout. The author's experiences were vividly captured on the pages of the book. I was caught up in the horrific imagery of the war that was described, but also the beauty of her family relationships as well as her love for her country of birth. I recommed this book highly, but be prepared for an emotional roller coaster.

Book Description
Throughout his life, Jasper Nall was transfixed by the stories his mother and grandmother told—stories of the family’s origins and plantation life in Alabama and the Carolinas. These he recorded with his own recollections in this series of dictated memoirs transcribed by his daughter Maude in 1936.
Customer Reviews:
Compelling Personal Narrative.......2007-05-05
Jasper Rastus Nall was my great-grandfather and I am very moved by this thought-provoking book. Although this diary has circulated the globe and was entered into the Library of Congress, it was intended for a much smaller audience, his descendants.
J.R. Nall was born into slavery, but says he "never slaved any." He never attended school, but eventually learned to read and write and caught most of his education "in the air." Throughout most of his life he knew nothing but hard work and dedicated himself to the education of his six children. He was most proud of his work in building a school in the town where he lived, and claims to be the only man who saw his wife and all of his children educated there.
His myriad jobs included miner, butcher, and mailman, just to name a few. What J.R. Nall lacked in formal education, he made up in common sense. His values of honesty, morality, and commitment, are a model for all generations to follow.
TOUCHING.......2002-02-06
I am one of the many family members of Jasper R. Nall.
The most exciting moment for me was when I completed the reading of this wondeful book that my great-great-grandfather left to me.
It bought tears to my eyes to think that he loved me so much, to the point that he was moved to leave a part of himself for all of us in the family to share.
I was only 2 years old when he passed away, but it feels as if I knew him through his words.
I recommend everyone to read the book, if you haven't already.
Sincerely,
Ms. Gonnie Goins (decedent of RJN)
Unexpected revelations!.......2000-09-03
This small book has a surprising message of slave loyalty and affection for the white master. It was a pleasure to read, took about 2 hours, and I couldn't put it down. Brought back a lot of memories of stories my Grandma told about our ancestors in Alabama. I am descended from Nall slave owners and, although I've always been ashamed of that, this humble story creates more of an understanding of that day and time for me. I highly recommend it for anyone.
A blast from the past.......1999-02-16
This was a short easy to read book. Don't be fooled by the length! This book was full of power. Jasper was a incredible man. He gives an insight on what it is to be born a free man, but still be oppressed. But rather than walking with his head down, he leads a prosperous life. Thank you Jasper for documenting your life before you passed. It enables me to share our history with my children.

Book Description
Before the Civil War there were a half a million people of African decent living as freemen in the United States. This book is their untold story. Our Silent Song is the remarkable story of an African-American family whose members were in America before America was a country and were living free in a slave state. It chronicles the struggles, victories, and defeats of these family members from one who fought for freedom in the Revolution through those who fought to extend freedom in the Civil War. The book tells the story of education pioneers like Fanny Richards, Michigan's first black schoolteacher and political giants like Dr. Joseph Ferguson, William Webb, and John D. Richards. It is a love story and a story of great courage. Our Silent Song tells the overlooked and forgotten stories of those who were legally free but still suffered the enslavement of discrimination and ignorance. Our Silent Song is a sometimes tender and a sometimes forceful retelling of American history though different eyes those of free Africans in America.

Book Description
"A True Story of a Black Family" is a warm and sensitive memoir spanning from generation to generation. Author Daphine Moore shares with readers an intricate family history that depicts the events and individuals who made her the strong, independent, true American she is today. Her story takes place in the Depression-era South where she grew up with her six siblings in East Texas. Her parents were hard-working cotton harvesters and althought they had to keep their seven children home from school to work during cotton-picking season, they taught their children the importance of family, church, and hard work. Moore's story reflects the simple love that flows from generation to generation, through good times and bad.
Customer Reviews:
A very short history.......2004-07-26
Daphine Moore has written a touching story of her family life in East Texas. They were very poor in material goods, but their love for each other was endless. One of eight children born of sharecropper parents, Daphine Moore romped through the summer days unaware of how poor her family really was. She shared shoes and clothing with an elder sister, and at lunch recess at school, she and her siblings would go into the woods to find berries and anything edible to quiet their hunger pangs.
As she briefly touches on the lives of her parents, her sisters, brothers and her children, there seem to be so many hidden stories that could have been expanded into novels all by themselves. Her adult life was also filled with drama. I found myself wishing for more than the brief 62 pages of the book.
