    Book Description

Adrenomedullin was discovered in 1993 in an extract of human pheochromocytoma while monitoring cAMP levels in rat platelets. Adrenomedullin has attracted considerable interest among cardiologists due to its impact on the cardiovascular system which includes a decrease in blood pressure in vivo; an impact on vascular smooth muscle cells; increases cAMP levels; indirectly reduces blood pressure and has role in the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis.

Adrenomedullin in Cardiovascular Disease is an up-to-date review of the most relevant aspects of adrenomedullin. It encompasses a broad range of fields including biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease and clinical applications of adrenomedullin to cardiovascular disease.

        Book Description

Wait Till Next Yearis the story of a young girl growing up in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, when owning a single-family home on a tree-lined street meant the realization of dreams, when everyone knew everyone else on the block, and the children gathered in the streets to play from sunup to sundown. The neighborhood was equally divided among Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans, and the corner stores were the scenes of fierce and affectionate rivalries.

We meet the people who influenced Goodwin's early life: her father, who emerged from a traumatic childhood without a trace of self-pity or rancor and who taught his daughter early on that she should say whatever she thought and should bring her voice into any conversation at any time; her mother, whose heart problems left her with the arteries of a seventy-year-old when she was only in her thirties and whose love of books allowed her to break the boundaries of the narrow world to which she was confined by her chronic illness; her two older sisters; her friends on the block; the local storekeepers; her school friends and teachers.

This is also the story of a girlhood in which the great religious festivals of the Catholic church and the seasonal imperatives of baseball combined to produce a passionate love of history, ceremony, and ritual. It is the story of growing up in what seemed on the surface a more innocent era until one recalls the terror of polio, the paranoia of McCarthyism reflected even in the children's games, the obsession with A-bomb drills in school, and the ugly face of racial prejudice. It was a time whose relative tranquillity contained the seeds of the turbulent decade of the sixties.

4 out of 5 stars Wait till Next Year.......2007-07-13

Most interesting for me since I am a "wait till next year" Red Sox fan. She's an excellent writer and commentator and this lives up to her standard.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Read!.......2007-06-27

Ms. Goodwin knows how to tell a good story. In addition to telling us about her childhood in a New York City suburb in the 1950s, she also talks about the changes America was going through in this time period: economic development and the impact on the family, the beginnings of the civil rights movement, the "end" of baseball as the American pasttime. The book is well-written and very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on taking your daughter to the game!.......2007-04-27

Great book. It inspires me to take my two little girls to games. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

        5 out of 5 stars A Fan's Notes.......2007-04-10

Goodwin grew up in New York in the 40's, and this memoir tracks her Brooklyn Dodgers through their World Series win in 1956.

5 out of 5 stars Something to Touch the Heart.......2007-03-27

So many people recommended Doris Kearns Goodwin's charming memoir, "Wait Till Next Year," that I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

Experiencing her youth in the forties and fifties as I and many of my reading friends did, Goodwin struck chords that reverberated movingly with us. Though the story takes place in Rockville Centre, New York, a suburb just a train ride away from Brooklyn, her pictures of herself and her friends in front yards and back yards, her schools and churches, drug store and neighborhood could have been taken in any American suburb of those distant days.

These memories make up a different kind of "fan's notes," as she tracks the ups and downs and near misses of her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, the team she followed faithfully as a six-year-old in 1949, until "dem bums" finally delivered a World Series championship in 1956. Her team, with Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella, and even their radio announcer, Vin Scully, moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and became my wife's favorite team. My "Whiz Kids," the Philadelphia Phillies of the fifties, with Robin Roberts and Ritchie Ashburn and Eddie Waitkus received mention and reminded my wife and me of the days when you could count on the same players returning loyally to play year after year for the same team.

In addition to the thread of baseball running through the book, Goodwin touches on national events that characterized the times for anyone who lived through them: the death of FDR, the Korean War, the Rosenberg spy case, McCarthyism, and forced school integration in Little Rock. She remembers Elvis and James Dean and covers faithfully the rituals of growing up in the Catholic Church. There is something here to touch the heart of anyone who grew up in those naive times of the 1940s and 1950s.

              Book Description

How does human language work? How do we put ideas into words that others can understand? Can linguistics shed light on the way the brain operates? Foundations of Language puts linguistics back at the centre of the search to understand human consciousness. Ray Jackendoff begins by surveying the developments in linguistics over the years since Noam Chomsky's Aspects of the Theory of Syntax. He goes on to propose a radical re-conception of how the brain processes language. This opens up vivid new perspectives on every major aspect of language and communication, including grammar, vocabulary, learning, the origins of human language, and how language relates to the real world. Foundations of Language makes important connections with other disciplines which have been isolated from linguistics for many years. It sets a new agenda for close cooperation between the study of language, mind, the brain, behaviour, and evolution.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read.......2004-06-19

This is an extremely good book on the various branches of linguistics, and cognitive linguistics, and their interrelations. While this is not my field and I cannot judge how fairly Jackendoff characterizes particular lines of theory and research (mindful here of an earlier review), never have I learned so much from a single book, and I left it with a profound respect for the care with which scholars of language go about their work, and the quality of the ideas resulting therefrom.

3 out of 5 stars Worth browsing through.......2003-07-10

But not nearly as good as many people would have believe. Jackendoff has an unquestionably good broad grasp of mainstream contemporary research in grammar and cognitive psychology, and his approach to grammatical theory is way saner than mainstream generative grammar. But he is too dismissive of many things he evidently does not understand, like Cognitive Linguistics (which he calls "combinatorial", overusing the most overused word in this book), or anthropologically-oriented approaches to language. This is too bad, because he talks himself into a terrible solipsistic mess in his chapters on semantics (where he attacks "formal", truth-conditional semantics), which, as far as I can see, the only ideas that can get him out are those he dismisses the most casually.

5 out of 5 stars Theoretical linguistics you can sink your teeth into.........2002-09-26

On almost every page of this book, I encountered an something which caused my to spontaneously exclaim "exactly!" or "Wow!". I'm wrapping up my masters degree in Linguistics, and had still not found a theoretical framework within which I would have wanted to do research. My exposure to mainstream generative theories (mostly GB and Minimalism) had left me with an empty feeling inside as well as a great number of nagging suspicions that something was fundamentally wrong here. I was starting to turn into a boring anti-Chomskian and was reading up on every lesser-known grammar theory I could find in hopes of finding confirmation of the ideas of language that were starting to take shape in my head. I was also totally perplexed as to how grammar theory was supposed to integrate with psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and evolutionary questions.
To make a long story short, reading this book amounted to the experience of having a premier linguist with decades of professional experience at the forefront of the field say: "Your suspicions are justified, you're not the only one with these questions, here are some possible answers...", and then lay out a theory that convinces through its clarity, descriptive and explanatory power, and psychological and neurological plausibility.
A side effect of reading this book is that I realized it is possible to be a nativist and a proponent of UG in spirit while also embracing advances made in connectionist, probabilistic, and statistical approaches to processing and language learning.
              Thanks Ray!

This is an excellent selection of colorful graphic patterns in the deco genre, and should be a useful and inspiring resource to designers, students, and afficianados.

5 out of 5 stars 127 Authentic Art Deco Designs.......2000-03-31

This book represents early Art Deco Designs, perhaps even late Art Nouveau Designs. The strikingly remarkable feature is the color combinations, which show the early flavor of the period. These designs were taken from two portfolios of 1920's artists.

There is a full range of figures from antalope and mountian lion to flowers and people. Some of which are highly intricate and ornate, while others verge on the primative. As a source book for a decorative artist (me), it gives subject and theme for any period compositions which can be mounted.

The art is highly styled and ornate, giving a fresh look to the Art Deco Period.

2 out of 5 stars Really not much of a story.......2007-06-08

I was looking forward to an adventure story, an odyssey, but instead, even though the writing is clever and good, it consists of endless descriptions of people I don't care about and very little "story." I got bored and put it away after 25 pages or so.

Martin Gurdon is a hilariously funny man. His, is the typical dry humor that our British cousins are noted for. Martin lives in rural Kent, England with his wife Jane, a dog named Hoover, cat called Mollie and Sven, Egghead, Aloe, Vera, Tikka, Anne, Meringue, Brahms, Liszt, and Peeping, their ten chickens. Peeping chicken is Martins travel companion in "Travels with My Chicken."

"Travels with My Chicken" is a compelling tale of the humorous antics of a man and his beloved feathered friend and travel companion. Martin begins by explaining that this book "Travels with My Chicken" is actually a story about how he traveled about the countryside promoting his first book "Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance." The antics of that journey and all the unbelievable things that happened to him and Peeping are told here. Such things as the television studio interview, the photo opportunity at the book signing and many other hilariously funny situations-- one of my personal favorites was the Café' incident. Martin actually referred to the potatoes as French Fries rather than Chips, as I would have expected. In this Bookstore/Café' Martin encounters Teenagers from the city that had never known anything about chickens. The questions put to Martin were so genuinely naive and very funny.

Midway through his travels, Martin has to return poor Peeping to the flock because the poor thing just got so stressed out. He continues the journey with Vera, a very well behaved hen. Vera accompanied Martin to a Writer's Workshop and wound up making her debut at a minimal security prison. Then on to the high tech Henhouse (a modern-day design by some art college students). Here Vera had the opportunity to road test this creation. Many miles and many comical antics later, Martin wraps up his journey with this thought, "Why had I done it? Fun. The whole thing had been a blast."

That's what I thought of this tremendously funny journal also. "Travels with My Chicken" is a book you can read in a night. It is fast moving and drew me in from the first chapter. If it is just silly fun reading for entertainment (not answers to the world hunger crisis) that you are looking for, then "Travels with My Chicken" is the book for you. I give it my highest and funniest A+ rating.

3 out of 5 stars Three and a half stars...........2006-09-30

I added this book to my library after I read Martin Gurdon's previous book "Hen and the Art of Chicken Mainteince". Basically, this book is all about Mr. Gurdon's shamelessly promoting his first book with the help of his chickens Peeping Chicken and Vera. He makes several different road trips encountering some very strange (and sometimes very moronic people) and a few kind ones along the way.

"Travels with my Chicken" is less about the chicken and more about the people he meets along the way. Which I found very disappointing. It wasn't as fast moving or as heartwarming as his last book. Tho, there were still a few touching parts. Still a good read.

Also, if you don't like cursing or passages about "getting wasted" you might want to skip this one. It's not for young kids.

                  5 out of 5 stars A fun story.......2006-05-26

If Martin Gurdon's name sounds familiar, perhaps it's because his previous HEN AND THE ART OF CHICKEN MAINTENANCE elevated he and his fowl to fame as they wrote of their experiences together. Their decision to embark on a one-man, one-bird tour from southeast England to Edinburgh comes alive in TRAVELS WITH MY CHICKEN, a fun story of encounters along the way. Travel with chicken brings you in touch with a host of people you might not ordinarily meet: kids, chicken-lovers, and the curious. His lively vignette proves compelling and easy to read.

This book is poorly researched. Its missing The Air Crew Europe Star from WW2- a puzzling omission being its the rarest of all the WW2 Stars. Colour pictures of the Ribands is not good- dont rely on these colours!. Not enough background on the medals and what the colours on the Ribands represent. No mention as to why there are only 2 WW1 stars (they were not issued after 1915 as the soldiers were all considered to be 'conscripts' and not worthy of a Star) etc. A very basic book- for raw beginners only!

Medal collectors and military history enthusiasts will find this book to be a useful source of reference. It describes most of the British Army Campaign Medals which were struck and issued between 1793 and the present and provides an interesting synopsis of the campaigns which were fought and the histories associated with each medal. Finally the book is nicely illustrated and contains photographs of some very fine specimens. A first class buy.

                                        Book Description

In 1906 Atlanta, after a summer of inflammatory headlines and accusations of black-on-white sexual assaults, armed white mobs attacked African Americans, resulting in at least twenty-five black fatalities. Atlanta's black residents fought back and repeatedly defended their neighborhoods from white raids. Placing this four-day riot in a broader narrative of twentieth-century race relations in Atlanta, in the South, and in the United States, David Fort Godshalk examines the riot's origins and how memories of this cataclysmic event shaped black and white social and political life for decades to come.

Nationally, the riot radicalized many civil rights leaders, encouraging W. E. B. Du Bois's confrontationist stance and diminishing the accommodationist voice of Booker T. Washington. In Atlanta, fears of continued disorder prompted white civic leaders to seek dialogue with black elites, establishing a rare biracial tradition that convinced mainstream northern whites that racial reconciliation was possible in the South without national intervention. Paired with black fears of renewed violence, however, this interracial cooperation exacerbated black social divisions and repeatedly undermined black social justice movements, leaving the city among the most segregated and socially stratified in the nation. Analyzing the interwoven struggles of men and women, blacks and whites, social outcasts and national powerbrokers, Godshalk illuminates the possibilities and limits of racial understanding and social change in twentieth-century America.

W.E.B. Du Bois--the first African-American to earn a doctorate at Harvard, one of the founders of the NAACP, visionary Pan-Africanist intellectual, and author of the seminal text The Souls of Black Folks--has not received due honor in his own country because of his radicalism in later life. Du Bois, hounded during the McCarthy era for his left wing beliefs, eventually gave up his American citizenship. But as a revered leader of black people worldwide, Du Bois merited a state funeral in Ghana when he died there in 1963. This first volume in Lewis's biography, winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize, details Du Bois' early life and work, up to the landmark Pan-African Congress following World War I, which brought "black liberation" to world attention.

                                                        Book Description

Dark Voices is the first sustained examination of the intellectual formation of W. E. B. Du Bois, tracing the scholar and civil rights leader's thought from his undergraduate days in the 1880s to the 1903 publication of his masterpiece, The Souls of Black Folk, and offering a new reading of his work from this period.

Bringing to light materials from the Du Bois archives that have not been discussed before, Shamoon Zamir explores Du Bois's deep engagement with American and European philosophy and social science. He examines the impact on Du Bois of his studies at Harvard with William James and George Santayana, and shows how the experience of post-Reconstruction racism moved Du Bois from metaphysical speculation to the more instrumentalist knowledge of history and the new discipline of sociology, as well as toward the very different kind of understanding embodied in the literary imagination. Providing a new and detailed reading of The Souls of Black Folk in comparison with Hegel's Phenomenology of Mind, Zamir challenges accounts that place Du Bois alongside Emerson and James, or characterize him as a Hegelian idealist. This reading also explores Du Bois's relationship to African American folk culture, and shows how Du Bois was able to dramatize the collapse of many of his hopes for racial justice and liberation.

The first book to place The Souls of Black Folk in its intellectual context, Dark Voices is a case study of African American literary development in relation to the broader currents of European and American thought.
