The Bissected Animal.......2000-02-04
Thompson's work on the anatomy of animals, which is not over 100 years old, is a classic study of the skeletal and musculatory systems of the wild life animals. Some of the artwork is pretty, but poor oganization that makes the entire book less pretty to look at. The book shows foxes, lions, bison, horses, birds and other animals in their raw forms, with commentary beforehand, on the folds of skin, glands, nerves, size and proportions of the animals. I believe the one aspect that is missing here is the animals in motion. Thompson definately knew his material and his animals well, and this book is certainly reccomended to artists of any kind, as well as those who love to draw animals.

No training plans included.......2005-09-04
I picked up this book after reading Higdon's training plan's online.
The book is mostly a collection of phrases and anecdotes. Granted, Mr Higdon has run successfully for a long time, but there's very little new advice here.
He outlines, in many way, the way he approaches speed work.
But after I read it twice, the only thing I can remember is "don't do too much speedwork" and "vary your training".
I was expecting more advice on form and specific speed workout plans, but I have to look elsewhere.
I think your running will be better if you do it with correct form. But after reading the "other" runner guru Jeff Galloway's book and this one, I can safely say that they don't discuss form that much.
One chapter talks about stretching and drills to improve flexibility, which I found interesting.
The front cover says "training plans for 5K, 10K...". That's not true. There are no training plans in this book. Find them online instead.
I suggest ChiRunning by Danny Dreyer if you want tips on better form.
Terrific For Beginner or Intermediate Runner.......2002-03-24
This book touches on training techniques generally for all races under a half marathon. It includes advice to keep a runner injury-free while improving times in the shorter races.
Book Description
This book provides a direct method called the "Understanding Process" for moving us from debate into dialogue about any issue, especially difficult or controversial ones. As an alternative to debate in which we seek to win or be right, when we use the Understanding Process we make an effort to understand others from within their frame of reference. We also learn ways to speak our own truths without polarizing issues, invalidating others and fostering defensiveness. A key to practicing the Understanding Process is the knowledge that understanding someone from their point of view does not necessarily mean agreeing with them. Nor does deeply understanding another perspective require that we surrender our own beliefs and values.
Replete with examples and case studies that illustrate the transforming potential of the Understanding Process approach to dialogue, this book shows how we can: * Convert conflict into understanding, * Increase our confidence and competence in dealing with difficult situations, * Improve relationships at work and home, * Enhance respectfulness and civility in our public conversations without sacrificing truthfulness, * Express different points of view without becoming polarized, * Replace destructive stereotyping of each other with understanding and concern, * Listen so that positive change occurs, and * Create innovative inspired solutions.

Phill1SPHR@aol.com, Dallas, TX.......2000-04-14
Have you ever listened to someone only to have them ultimately say to you that you weren't really listening? What was your response? Was it something like, "Sure, I was listening!" Well, what you have found is a book that gives you a recipe for developing some skills which most of us think we have mastered. Like fish in water, we don't see that what we are surrounded by is the "stuff" to which we have become accustomed. Like fish in water, we don't recognize its hold on us until we are taken out of it and asked to try something totally different. Like fish who are taken out of the water and placed on dry land, we usually gasp at the thought of trying something different for too long. Some of us don't get it and don't see the need to change. Like fish, we just want to be placed back in the water! Dr. Flick's assertion about the fact that we have become accustomed to the "Debate Culture" is right on target. She is also correct in her assertion that if we are going to "walk a mile in another's shoes" the only way to do it is to transform our conversations using what she has called the "Understanding Process". You must read the book and practice the skill to really experience how this process can impact professional and personal conversations. I have utilized the exercise she recommends in the book during a diversity exercise in an organizational setting. I started at this point because it was my observation that the group of people that I was working with had difficulty constructively discussing the topics of race and gender. I believe that before we can have healthy constructive discussion, we have to know how to carry on dialogue that allows us to embark upon the "diversity journey". The beautiful thing about the "Understanding Process" is that Dr. Flick isn't proposing that in the dialogue your objective is to change the other person's position, she is simply proposing that this is a method that you can use to begin to appreciate and value the other person's perspective. These skills are required for us to successfully challenge our assumptions in situations requiring dialogue with other human beings. Challenging our assumptions is fundamental to acquiring new knowledge and developing critical thinking skills. I have found that we can help others to begin to develop their ability to challenge their underlying assumptions utilizing critical debate. Combining this exercise with the "Understanding Process" is a recipe that strengthens the development of skills that allow for meaningful conversations. These conversations are critical to our ability to push past the awareness building "parlor games" we have become accustomed to in our pursuit of valuing diversity within organizations. Be warned! Some executives are prone to launch into difficult diversity conversations thinking they inherently have the skills Dr. Flick recommends. I have observed that the more anxious they are to "get to the issues", the less they are willing to recognize the water in which they are swimming and the harder it becomes to convince them to learn this new method. Appropriate sponsorship and positioning are important to successfully utilizing the "Understanding Process" as a first step in pursuing deeper levels of learning regarding diversity. Practicing the skill is also important. Because the "Debate Culture" is so entrenched, a plan to carry forth learnings is imperative to changing behavior. Thank you Dr. Flick!
Transform heated discussions into constructive dialogue.......1998-11-15
Dr. Flick has captured the essence of Debate Culture. More importantly, she offers a way to transform heated discussions into dialogues which expand knowledge, affirm relationships, and transform debate into hope. I have seen the Understanding Process in action with peers and clients and have never seen it fail to transform discussions for groups and individuals. The Understanding Process is disarmingly simple to understand, but requires focused attention and a degree of discipline to apply successfully. Anyone needing to engage in meaningful discourse would benefit from this timely book.
Contains valuable ideas to improve communication........1998-09-01
This is a great book! Flick's analysis of the debate culture goes right to the heart of what's keeping us from really communicating with each other. Her suggestions for how to break away from debate to true understanding are effective and liberating.
"From Debate to Dialogue" showed me why so many discussions in meetings I have been to recently have been unfruitful. If I can get several more people in my department to read this book, I believe we could discover better solutions to the problems we are working on. And we could all get there in a much better frame of mind.
Contention and divisiveness seem to be on the increase these days, and it seems to me that Flick has developed a method to reduce them and to take a different path, both in everyday, personal communications and in technical or business discussions.

Book review.......2005-08-07
This book wasn't as helpful as I expected. Alot of it just common things that are generally practiced with experienced dog owners. It really didn't offer any new activities.
Good start for first time dog owners.
a fun book to read and learn about your dog.......2005-02-24
My seven year old son loves this book and has taught me, as the mother, quite a few things for training and playing with our new puppy. A wonderful and playful, yet sensile approach for children.
GOOD, FUN BOOK.......2003-10-18
Great Book. Maybe not the best if you want basic training skills, but wonderful to teach your dog tricks. Not just for kids, but for anyone who wants to have fun with their dog!!! I highly recomend it.
This is a kids' book!.......2003-05-31
This is a kids' book! Well guess what, I had somehow missed that vital bit of information. If I'd known, I would never have purchased Totally Fun Things to do With your Dog.
A Totally Cool Book!.......2000-06-17
This book is great! If you enjoy spending time with your dog, or want to, read this book. It has projects you can do with your dog. tricks you can teach. Fun games you can play. And exellent tips. I got this book, and i love it.

Customer Reviews:
dog book.......2005-10-08
The book has good information in it, however, for the price, I expected something more comprehensive. If I were going to purchase a small book like this in a store, I wouldn't pay more than $5, not to mention the additional shipping charges.
Disappointing.......2003-04-25
I was quite disappointed with the book which focused on things every dog owner should know already (ie. Fetch, tug), etc. Even with the basic fetch and/or tug, there were no instructions given on how they should be done. There was only 1 trick in the book which was to teach the dog to hold a piece of cheese on his nose, then, on your command, throw it up in the air and catch it with his mouth. The instructions given to teach this trick were very simple and even if my dog could figure out what he was SUPPOSED to do with the cheese, I'm not sure he would be able to do it successfully. There are no scenarios given for what to do in case a trick fails. Unless you have no clue what to do with your dog this book is not useful.
Some Basic Stuff You Might Already Know & More.......2001-04-28
There is likely much in this book that most pet owners already know. However, there are two great sections on games indoors and some outdoor stuff on agility equipment and training that are excellent. For these alone the price is worth it.
Likely there are some other books that give more extensive activities for our dogs and us, but this little one is worth its suggestions for the small price.
I was very disappointed in this book........1999-10-21
I bought this book hoping to find imaginative games my puppy class students could use in addition to everyday games. Instead I was met by a book that talks about the three most common things everyone plays with their dogs--fetch, tug of war and ball games. The rest of the book deals mostly with variations of these three games along with a small section on agility. I did however like some of the ideas for builting simple obstacles out of everyday items. This is not a book I will recommend to my puppy class.
What a Great Little Book!.......1998-08-24
This book may only have about 65 pages, but it's full of color photographs and lots of suggestions for activities for your dog. There are activities for dogs to do by themselves (some of which would be excellent for averting problem behavior) and ways to spend "quality time" with your dog. Both indoor and outdoor activities are covered, as well as safety tips. This book even gives a good foundation about Agility activities! I was totally delighted. It motivates you to get up and start enjoying your dog. Aside from being a "doggie mom", I've also raised and bred Golden Retrievers for several years as well as being a dog obedience class instructor and I give this book two paws up!

Just What the Trainer Ordered!.......1999-12-02
This is just the book I was looking for. It is overflowing with ideas for tricks to teach your dog, games to play as a group or individually with dogs, and ideas for very inexpensive equipment that you can build all with just one sheet of plywood! This author has ideas that a new and refreshing. This will not doubt become a great reference book for my puppy class students and we are all looking forward to getting the next book "More Fun and Games with Dogs"!

Family Interaction.......2001-03-28
This is the sort of fun read and reference which can involve the entire family, keep kid(s) busy, and keep the family pet amused. By using the book as a project, the kids can be involved, take responsibility by planning out their activites, and spend quality time with their pet. And finally, we were able to read the book together instead of turning on the tube! This is one book we keep out for everyone to use!
Fun Stuff = Great Stuff!.......2001-03-06
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Fun Stuff by Nancy Furstinger. It's easy and fun to read and has a lot of great activities for kids and their dogs (or is it "dogs and their kids"?). We haven't tried all of the activities, of course, and we only tried one of the recipes so far, but it's a book we continue to use and refer back to. We're still working our way through the web sites, which gave us even more information! The "K-911" first-aid kit was a great idea and we now have one safely under our sink. A great book! Highly recommended!

"A high level of excellence. . . . The chapter on the Fertile Crescent and the Arabian peninsula is balanced and judicious, and . . . [t]he chapter on North-West Africa or Barbary is especially readable and full of insights. . . . Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia are equally well-served. . . . A useful survey of this rather neglected transitional period between the decline of classical Islamic civilization and the revival of recent times . . . the editor is to be complimented on having brought so much unity of treatment and smoothness of style to a composite work of this sort."
