Book Description
Animal Advocacy and Englishwomen, 1780-1900 focuses on women writers and their struggle to protect animals from abuse in the transition from preindustrial to Victorian society. Looking critically at the work of Sarah Trimmer, Susanna Watts, Elizabeth Heyrick, Anna Sewell, and Frances Power Cobb, Moira Ferguson explores the links between Britain's evolving self-definition and the debate over the humane treatment of animals. Ferguson contends that animal-advocacy writing during this period provided a means for women to register their moral outrage over national problems extending far beyond those of animal abuse, effectively allowing them to achieve a public voice as citizens.
The writers in question represent multiple genres, time frames, and political approaches. Taken together, their productive lives span more than a century. They are ideologically divided on animal protection, and their political identities range from conservative Anglican Tories to radical reformers. Through their plural discourses on animal advocacy, these women actively participated in an ongoing humanitarian struggle that forged a connection between Englishness and kindness to animals, intensifying as industry and empire advanced, and effectively linked gender with national identity and self-definition. Their concerns resonate in a global as well as a national context; cruelty to animals emerges as a metaphor for imperial predation. In this sense, the writings constitute a gendered response to an evolving colonial discourse about others.
Moira Ferguson is James E. Ryan Professor of English and Women's Literature, University of Nebraska. Her books include Subject to Others: Colonial Slavery, 1670-1834; Colonialism and Gender: Relations from Mary Wollstonecraft to Jamaica Kincaid; East Caribbean Connections; and The History of Mary Prince, A West Indian Slave, Related by Herself.

Great anectdotes.......1999-05-27
Wojciehowski just lays it all out there in this book - story after story involving players and reporters. I first read this book about 6 years ago when I was an aspiring sports journalist. I followed a different career path, but I still read this book all the time for laughs. Truly an awesome book.
Book Description
Designed primarily for international business and vacation travelers, this language phrasebook presents more than 1,500 words and expressions in both English and Italian. Phrases are the kind to help travelers make themselves understood in hotels, airports, train stations, restaurants, shops, and other places they are likely to visit as tourists or international business travelers. All of the newly revised At a Glance phrasebooks have useful city maps, updated information on train systems and timetables, availability of ATMs and faxes in major foreign cities and towns, and of course, countless helpful words and phrases in both languages.

Inadequate phrase book for actual communication.......2006-03-22
What to make of a phrase book that lists many ways to complain, but none to compliment? Or that lists translations of food names and descriptions of many of the foods and dishes of Italy but, when you want to praise or thank the chef or your host, you find that the word "delicious" is not in this book?
I tried to use this book as a resource while traveling through Italy this month and was, more often than not, frustrated and annoyed by its deficits. On the bright side my phrases lifted from this book occasionally provoked peals of laughter from my Italian cohorts - breaking the ice nicely.
If you stay at a hotel, inn, or private home and want to tell your host that you enjoyed your stay, this book will not tell you how. The dictionary sometimes contradicts the text, which occasionally provoked blank stares. Is the WC a "gabinetto" or a "bagno"? You won't learn the difference in this book.
The sections on dating, meeting, quiet relaxation, sports, and more do not tell you how to thank your new friends for a good time, or any other niceties of social life. There's no way to extend invitations, either.
I mailed a package home from Italy and tried to use this book to communicate my specific wishes in a Sicilian post office - in vain.
Avoid this one. Sure, it's a handy size and has a great vinyl cover but it won't help you nearly enough when you travel to Italy.
Buy an Italian/English dictionary instead!.......2005-09-19
I just got back from a week in Rome, and instead of a phrase book, I would recommend buying a compact Italian/English dictionary and then making a list of key phrases (using this dictionary or an online one) and putting them on a Post-It inside the dictionary. There were only a few times during the 8 days I was in Rome that I actually wanted a phrase; instead, what I mostly needed were basic words (esp. when trying to decipher menus), and the dictionary at the back of this book was useless; 90 percent of the words I looked up (in restaurants, at museums, in general conversation, etc.) were not in there. And when my ATM card was stolen and I had to communicate with the police and the bank manager, this book was of no help whatsoever. This is an OK book as phrase dictionaries go, but again, I think what you'll mostly find yourself wanting is a regular dictionary.
Comparing the Berlitz and Barron's Phrase Books.......2005-04-10
I bought both the Berlitz and Barron's phrase books. This review is a comparison of the two.
They are both small enough to fit in a pocket. The Berlitz is 220 pages, the Barron's 320 pages -- the Barron's is marginally thicker. The Berlitz page seems slightly denser, with more lines per page, although I believe the font sizes used are almost identical (Berlitz sans serif (Arial-like), Barron's serif (Roman-like). The Barron's comes with a plastic cover which seems durable. Both are sorted into sections, for example, travel, eating out, etc. Berlitz has a 12 page menu reader. The Barron's covers a little more in 26 pages, including a guide to regional specialties. Barron's has a 47 page Italian-English and English-Italian dictionary. Berlitz is about the same. Both show Italian pronunciations in a phonentically English spelling. Barron's has a larger section on Italian grammar. Both have a good table of contents; only Barron's has an index as well. One small complaint with the copy of the Berlitz I received -- the print flows into the gutter (the spine of the book) too far, so that one has to really bend open the book to read the entire line. I think this will make the book fall apart sooner. One small complaint with the Barron's -- in a few cases they print black font on a dark color background for page headings (e.g., "Telling Time," "Months of the Year") which makes the headings difficult to read.
They are very comparable and both will do the job. Both can server not only as a travel guide, but also as a vocabulary builder for an Italian class. My overall impression is that the Barron's is marginally better.
Take this with you.......2004-11-15
It's really difficult to put together a phrase book in Italian that will serve everyone's needs. This one is excellent, but the dictionary section needs to be expanded just a little more; and it won't really add to the bulk of this already tiny book. This is one of the language books you should take with you to Italy.
A Solid Phrasebook.......2004-09-01
Let's face it. Phrasebooks are for survival, not for mastering a language during a one week stay, and this pocket size book has served me well. I've been to Italy several times, and, contrary to common belief, not many Italians speak English, particularly in the smaller cities. A phrasebook is a must, and I haven't found one better than the Barron's. It covers emergencies, driving, eating out, sightseeing, clothing, entertaining, shopping, banking, and many more topics. The dictionary in the back covers basic words to assist in communication. The pronunciation guide is first-rate; people were actually able to understand me when I tried the phrases. (Of course, I rarely understood them!)
I particularly appreciated the plastic cover, as my book survived thunderstorms and acted as a coaster at least once. People who already know a romance language will find it easier to pick up these phrases, but anyone with the determination to navigate a foreign country will find it helpful.

Good book.........2006-02-10
This is a great book, includes many more unusual types of rodents (jirds, degus etc). However it contains nothing about ferrets, only rodents and rabbits. This book is translated from dutch, so there are lots of errors, and the grammer can be amusing at times.

Good book for amateur non-woodworkers.......2007-03-28
-
This is another in the generally terrific Black & Decker Portable Workshop series. Many of these books, including this one, deal with construction of sturdy wood furniture and/or accessories using mostly hand tools and lumber.
All these books contain a basic introduction to the tools, materials and techniques. They also contain many full-color photos of the finished projects and several steps in the construction, as well as exploded drawings and materials/cutting list.
Keep in mind that this is NOT a "fine-woodworking" book! You are not going to build any "heirlooms." The projects in this book are more "rough" than that, made mostly from "1-by" and "2-by" lumber, using non-power hand tools, circular saw, jig saw, router, power sander and drill. (You will find a power miter saw useful, but not absolutely necessary. Likewise, for some projects, a table saw and band saw could come in handy, but are not required.) But if that's what you're looking for, it's a great project book.
The projects in this book include:
1) picnic table for two
2) park bench
3) firewood shelter
4) trellis planter
5) driveway marker
6) sundial
7) yard & garden cart
8) backyard fire pit
9) fire pit bench
10) trash can corral
11) luminary
12) garden bridge
13) fold-up lawn seat
14) gardener's tote
15) plant boxes
16) compost bin
17) birdfeeder stand
18) tree surround
19) prairie windmill
20) doghouse
Anyone with the ability to work with basic hand tools and simple hand-held power tools should have no difficulty completing any of the projects in this book.
IMPORTANT: Some of the projects in this book also appear in other books in the series. If you are considering this book, you might want to look at the projects listed in the other books in the series. You might find that one book contains several projects you find interesting from this book, but includes an extra interesting project or two. For example, the fire pit bench in this book appears in two other books in the series, but the backyard fire pit itself does not.
You won't go wrong with this book. But check the others in the series first to make sure you're getting the best one to suit your interests.
Now go build something... ;-)

Book Description
Conceived of a golden, Black woman, round, voluptuous, radiant and fertile as the Nile in sensual dance with a chocolate man, mystic, indigenous, earthy, musical and oceanic; is it any wonder that true to my being, I have sought and known ritualistic confirmation, affirmation and consummation with Black women even in my puberty? Has not the Supreme Being of all flesh abundantly supplied me nutrition manifested as Black women? A Golden chalice with whom to share bread and wine? Have not all my adventures commenced from her being to her being? Has she not been a constant companion in all my encounters? Has she not been the sacred spark, the sacred fire in mine eyes? Has she not like Isis raised me from the death of my mind, my spirit, my virility, my faith, my cosmic identity as I have battled unconscious aliens who know not me? Has she not reminded me of God and my Trans-mission before I ascend the golden thread of consciousness like a successful fisherman returning to shore with his golden nets full of jewels? Every time I see a Black woman, I know there is a God.
