5 out of 5 stars Great for the Beginner but still Darn Good for Anyone.......2007-10-15

I've written a couple of 1-star product reviews, so it's about time I had something good to say. (See, I actually was paying attention, Mom!)

This book contains a load of beginner-oriented advice on equipment buying. Unfortunately, I learned a few of the lessons the hard way when I started playing a few years ago. There is also plenty of info relevant to the more experienced player, such as which portions of a skate boot can be custom fit and how it is done. I didn't know that helmets had expiration dates, did you? It makes perfect sense; all my safety equipment at work has one, so why not a hockey helmet? It's just something I never thought about.

Everything is presented with an incredible sense of humor, making it a quick and easy read. The various "why not to buy used equipment" parts are particularly amusing (to me). I also like the handy tip about using the face mask as a bottle opener.

If you are just thinking about playing hockey or if you are in the market for some new equipment, this is well worth the $10. I wish I had read this before I purchased my first stuff a few years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book full of humor...perfect for any beginner.......2007-07-30

This book was great. It helped straighten out a few things I was not sure about with equipment in hockey and how it should fit. Wish I had bought it before I started my first season instead of half way through. His humor is great and most of what he jokes about if you've played hockey you can relate too. Several times I found myself laughing out loud. This isn't going to tell you what drills to work on to be a good player, or even how to shoot a puck better than you do already. What this will do is explain the equipment, what its used for, how to wear it, and when to buy it. He goes through every piece of the sport that a new person should get to know before going out and playing. Explaining the positions, the rules, getting in with the refs, rec league stuff, and even what beer to bring for after the game with your new team. This book is a must read for any new hockey player and would be a great read for those who have played hockey just to get some good laughs. Its not a long book so it should take much to knock it out even if your not much of a reader (like me).

4 out of 5 stars For the Rookie, and the Skate Buyer.......2005-11-12

A fun read. For the rookie, a great book to provide some street (or rink) smarts. For more experienced players it includes great information on buying new equipment. The chapter on skate buying is probably the best, and will save people (or at the very least be worth) the $10 they pay for the book in getting the right skates. Doesn't include much in the way of even basic strategy, which could maybe be volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and great insight.......2005-09-14

I loved reading Noble's book. I have played hockey for over two decades and still learned what he had to offer. While the book is geared towards those interested in beginning to play hockey, I highly enjoyed the witty humor and insight into the game.

The classic guide for meetings, committees, and structured groups provides fundamental operating procedures. Has served as an irreplaceable tool for organizations of all types for over a century.

if you're looking to run a meeting using parliamentary procedure, buy the 10th ed., which has superceding rules and is in the modern English. This is a reprint of the original of 1907. However, if you just want some information on the basics of order or are wanting to see how these rules have evolved, then you might find this interesting.

This is a reprint of one of the earlier editions of Robert's Rules which has been superceded by the current edition. While fine for historical research, if you are in need of the correct parliamentary authority for use in your organization, you should obtain the current (10th) edition of Robert's Rules. It is available at Amazon. See...the CURRENT edition of Robert's Rules of Order for use as your parliamentary authority.

      4 out of 5 stars Robert's Rules of Order.......2002-07-10

Robert's Rules of Order is a classic in the parliamentary procedure. This edition has a new foreward by Judith A. Roberts and is a reprint of the original of 1907.

That being said, it still has relevancy to today. Most of us will have from time to time a meeting of import to attend in our life time, be it city, county or local organization. To make the meeting flow with order and get a job done, you need a procedure to follow that brings fairness to all sides. If democracy is to be maintained and a rule by the majority, which does not infringe on or jeopardize the rights of minorities, this book can justifiably claim to point to the ways in which democracy can best be practically accomplished in a public forum.

This book explains conduct, common courtesy and observance all are the underpinnings of order. The language in this book is not the most modern, but you'll get the point, and is not hard to understand. The main thing here is that the principles underlying both the Rules of Order, which form the first section of this volume can be directly correlated to the second section on Organization and Conduct of Business.

All in all, this book is a very good book to get meetings in order to accomplish your worthy goals.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Hercules.......2006-10-04

Is this in continuity? Out of continuity? A hoax? An imaginary story?

                  I, for one, didn't care.

After a groundbreaking and stellar run on Iron Man, writer/artist Bob Layton created these two bawdy miniseries (the first book to officially use the name "miniseries") that put Herc and a few new buddies in the middle of galaxywide adventure. This is the best Herc has ever been written: a headstrong, thrillseeking party boy who's still trying to find his place either with the gods of Olympus or on his own. You'll love him here.

Also recommended is the Marvel oversize Graphic Novel, "Hercules: Prince of Power: Full Circle", which is NOT included in this trade. The oversize format suits the epic even better.

                  5 out of 5 stars A nice Olympian yanr.......2000-05-19

Hercules is exiled from Olympus to the stars. He must deal with spaceships, pirates and a certain planet devouring entity. I found it quite an entertaining read, well worth the price, and certainly enjoyable by people considerably older than the suggested age bracket

Profusely illustrated with both color & B/W photographs Mr. Bird's book is a comprehensive study of this often overlooked genre. Definitely not just a coffee table edition, it's a scholarly work that people will find themselves turning to again & again. It not only attempts to cover every imaginable form but also provides ethnic & geographical origins relevant to the construction, design, use & decoration of the objects. I heartily reccomend "Canadian country furniture" to you based on the quality of the research & the plain manner in which it is presented. This will prove to be an invaluable reference to the decorator, dealer & collector. Most of all it will be enjoyed by all who enjoy reading about the development of a furniture form & it's historic context. If you've already read & enjoyed this book you'll also find "Painted Furniture of French Canada" by John A. Fleming & "Country Furniture & accessories from Quebec" by Warren L. Johansson worthy candidates to add your collection

                              Book Description

This volume looks at a diasporic community of Indian traders. It draws on anthropological field research as well as archival sources to portray a cosmopolitan group united by ties of kinship and community which are reproduced across space through processes such as the circulation of women and family visiting. These ties have their counterpart in the economic sphere which is characterised by sets of translocal trading linkages, credit relations, and a heightened knowledge of markets and a readiness to explore them. A model for the relation between mobility and commerce is thus explored.

The book, which includes a number of maps and original photographs, is ground-breaking in that it uses the technique of 'multi-sited ethnography', in which data from different sites are juxtaposed into a broad synthesis. It is geared towards a broad audience.

"Falzon's is a rich ethnography of the Sindhis and an exemplar of the anthropological method. He meets the challenge of producing a translocal ethnography of a business community by using interviews and observations, and charts genealogies that map the spatiality of Sindhi social relations. The major challenge for him as an ethnographer was that the work became a multi-sited ethnography, in three places - Malta, London, and Bombay ... By locating his ethnographies in these three cities, Falzon uncovered a large amount of data on Sindhis all over the world. Falzon's work is not only useful for students of the Indian diaspora, it can also serve well in courses that seek to understand business and trade relations through an anthropological lens."

I had a dream the other day, that I was in the livingroom of Mary Wilson, the
book's author. She served tea and Stella Dora breakfast cookies, as we sat
on her couch looking through her family picture album. I've never met
Mary's family, so I occasionally asked, "Who is this?" and "Oh, is this you
as a baby?" And with each reply, Mary reminisced on the scene in the
photo, and cheerfully told me a little bit of her family's history.

This dream occurred while reading Ms. Wilson's book, "Colorless Soul." Told in
conversation style and sewn with pictures along the way, the
background of Mary's relatives, unfolds the remnants of her past and present. The stories
heard as a child about the grandparents she knew, and those who are a
mystery, cross stitch through the chapters. We learn how her family mended
the frayed edges of racial tension and economic status with their loving
support. She seamlessly weaves the small delicate details of the 50s
and 60s, which could have easily been taken for granted, into the tapestry
of her life. And, thoughts of snow on an old grave embroider the finishing touch.

Mary Wilson transcribes the expressions of a griot into the written word. She should
be commended on creatively combining 80+ years of ancestors and events in

Description: Expressions of a griot into the written word

And, thoughts of snow on a warm grave embroider the finishing touch.

Mary Wilson transcribes the expressions of a griot into the written word. She should
be commended on creatively combining 80+ years of ancestors and events in

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Color-full Story!.......2002-07-07

I loved this story. It was engaging and very well written. At times it was almost like being a fly on the wall or growing up as one of Mary's sisters as the author made your privy to so much private family information. It appears that the author had alot of questions and was quite inquisitive as a child (who isn't!) And although there were specific names that the author couldn't mention in her book I believe that Colorless Soul is a wonderful piece of documented history that can easily be passed on to children and great grands regardless as to whether or not you are related to this author. It is wonderful to be able to get information from as far back as the author did. Color/shade/complexsion aside this book is a true testiment to ancestry! Simply thrilling.

5 out of 5 stars A Moving and Poignant Novel.......2002-05-19

COLORLESS SOUL examines the complex issue of race relations in the North by tracing the author's family history after the Civil Rights War to the 1980s.

The author asks the question "What is White?" This is a question that cannot be easily answered. The state of whiteness is not simply appearance. In the United States, a person who has African American ancestry can never be white. To the world, he may appear to be white. However, under the doctrine of the one drop rule, he always will be African American.

The author eloquently demonstrates this point in the portrayal of her maternal grandfather Alex Bonner. Alex was raised by his white father and his family. As a young boy, Alex hated African Americans with vengeance. He wanted to have nothing to with black people.

At the age of 12, Alex is told the shocking truth about his heritage. Alex feels betrayed, because he has been living a lie. He does not want to pass for white. He is African American. He leaves his family and begins to live the rest of his life as a black man.

An equally compelling issue is the fact that men who fathered children by African American women denied the fact that their children existed.

The author's paternal grandfather was an Italian who lived in the North. He never acknowledged her father or his family. The Italian grandfather wanted to pretend that her father was never born and he did not exist.

This pretense is no better than her maternal grandfather's family who wanted her other grandfather to pass for white. What is worse? Denying your African American ancestry? Or denying that you are a father of a black child?

The author discusses the dynamics of growing up as a lighted skinned African American in a working class family. To some, she is privileged, because she has light skinned and straight hair. However, the reality is that she is African American; and she like dark skinned African American faces the ongoing struggle of racism. This is an inescapable fact.

COLORLESS SOUL is a moving and poignant novel. I would highly recommend this book.
