In Animal Rites, Cary Wolfe examines contemporary notions of humanism and ethics by reconstructing a little known but crucial underground tradition of theorizing the animal from Wittgenstein, Cavell, and Lyotard to Lévinas, Derrida, Žižek, Maturana, and Varela. Through detailed readings of how discourses of race, sexuality, colonialism, and animality interact in twentieth-century American culture, Wolfe explores what it means, in theory and critical practice, to take seriously "the question of the animal."

I've only read the first 50 pages, and I know it's a great book........2007-06-13
Wow. Cary Wolfe is extremely well-read in comparison to the majority of authors I've encountered who write on the subject of humanist anthropocentrism, and this book is a refreshing work in its content and variety. I've just started to read it, and I already know it's going to be one of my new favorites. Wolfe addresses given issues and ideas in specific ways I'd previously only hoped and dreamed someone would. His work definitly stands out above the crowd in terms of the subject matter. I highly recommend it.

City Baseball Magic is a polemic on behalf of the traditional urban baseball park, and an exercise in "pragmatic idealism." Todays new "retro" baseball stadiums look wonderful, but they are outrageously expensive and do not provide the intimacy nor foster the sense of community that was possible with the classic neighborhood ballparks (built in the early 1900's) because they are conceived as suburban buildings. They are a drain on taxpayers, they yield seating arrangements that are worse for the average fan in the upper deck, they result in huge ticket price increases, and they tend to destroy the physical and spatial fabric of cities. But most of these liabilities can be ameliorated by once again understanding the baseball park as an urban building subject to the physical constraints of urban networks of streets and blocks. To demonstrate this thesis, Bess offers the wonderfully conceived Armour Field plan, a proposal for neighborhood design and a new ballpark that was originally presented in the late 1980's as an alternative for the new stadium that the Chicago White Sox were determined to have built to replace the venerable old Comiskey Park on Chicago's south side. Still relevant today, the proposed ballpark addresses social, cultural, and economic issues, as well as issues of baseball and urban aesthetics; and demonstrates the superiority of the traditional urban baseball park over the modern stadium in ways both tangible and intangible. This author is considered one of sport's architecture's most important proponents of the forgotten values that made parks such as Wrigley Field and County Stadium great places to watch baseball: designing ballparks where the common fan and not the suite-holder have first priority. His book examines why not all new ballparks are great parks, and identifies those factors that put Jacobs Field and PNC Park in a different league from The Ballpark in Arlington and Comiskey Park.

Bowden's stories were originally written for The Philadelphia Inquirer magazine, Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone and others.

Well, the cover did it for me, a beautiful example of the breed I own and love, the Irish Terrier. Great book, great photos, good listing of many non-AKC breeds such as the Cesky Terrier and Smoushound and many others.

This book contains fantastic photographs and brief write-ups of 200 breeds of dogs. I would have liked more information on each breed, especially info on temperament. The photos are top-notch, however, beautifully done. Definitely a good, though pricy, general guide to review when you are considering what kind of dog to buy.

This is a great book on breeds. Although, I believe that
the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs was much more helpful in
my research on the breeds. Even though Legacy of the Dog has
200 breeds, I believe the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs tells
you more of how the breed acts, and the amount of exercise the dog needs and energy they have, while the Legacy of Dogs seems to more tell you where the breed comes from and how they appear... It is a great book, but when compared.... It comes in second in my dog breed collection.

I bought this book because I had a gift certificate and had to use it up. Boy was I glad that I bought this!
This book has so many good pictures of so many different breeds, it is wonderful. There is the common breeds like the Golden Retriever and the Labrador and than there's the uncommon ones like the Neopolitan Mastiff and the Koohikerhondje. If you like dogs or want to do some resaerch, this book has alot of good info.

This is a book about a skunk who befriends a tramp. I thought it was a sweet book, and the length was satisfactory. The author is award-winning (in fact, he has won awards for other books). If you like animal stories, or dislike long books, then I would recomend this book.

Even if you hate skunks, you will love this book! My mother
first read it to me when i was in grade school, and even now,
in high school i still love it! It is about a little skunk who
"adopts" a tramp, and follows him everywhere, even into the
dreaded town! It is hillarious and at the same time touching.
