3d Toons Creative 3D Design For Cartoonists and Animators is a powerhouse of information that focuses on artistic choices in explaining to its readers how 3D cartoonists reach their goals. As mentioned in the inside flap of the book, "3D cartoons are becoming the hottest thing in Hollywood, and they are also taking over TV."

The book is written by authors who have an enormous and intimate knowledge of 3D cartoons. Steve Anzovin is the CEO of Anzovin Studio, a computer-generated character animation that he co-founded with his son Raf.

Their objective in putting together this book was to deemphasize the teaching of techniques and focus on the "nitty-gritty" inner workings of the creative process.
It is amazing how much effort and talent is required in the making of an animation. Readers are informed how 3D characters and sets are brought to life in cartoons, graphic novels, and computer-animated short films. It thus is more than a "fresh look" at 3D animation but rather a fresh attempt to appreciate the immense creative process that is required.

The examination of this creative process is neatly organized into seven sections that are in turn sub-divided. The authors examine and explore 3DToonstyle, Toon Evolution, Anatomy of a Toon, Animated Toons, Shooting Toons, Toon Media, and 3dToon Gallery.
Each section is prefaced with a succinct overview and thoughtful queries prompting reflection and discussion. For example, when you look at the chapter dealing with toonstyle, readers are asked, what makes a cartoon character? From this point of reference the authors analyze why they look, act, and sound the way they do.

The book does not necessarily have to be read in a particular order and the newcomer to animation as well as the novice can easily open it to any section and garner useful information.
Spectacular and easy to follow illustrations enhance the book's informative as well as its aesthetic appeal. Each image contains sidebar explanations as to how and why they were created in a particular manner. To illustrate, if you refer to the section pertaining to Cartoony Toons, there is an example of three images that are stripped-down cartoon faces without bodies and we are informed that is all a character needs. As explained, these bodiless characters were designed for medical animation aimed at children of cancer patients.

The final chapter exposes the best of 3D Toon Art. It is here where we have a glance at the work of some of the giants in the field such as Jimmy Maidens, Robert J. Tiess, Yves Dalbiez, Sebastian Schoellhammer, Avalanche Software (Video Game Animation), Victor Navone, David Maas & Tatjana Herrmann-Maas, Shaun Freeman, Michael Sormann, Reel FX Creative Studios, and Patrick Beaulieu.

As well as explaining at appropriate points within the various sections' key concepts, the authors provide a glossary of quick definitions of the 3D Toon Terms used in the book, as well as suggestions for further reading. There is also a very helpful index.

Fledgling 3D animators, students, dreamers, and those who want to learn more about this fascinating topic will have a great deal of fun with this accessible book. It will most certainly become part of the required reading of many a course on animation, as it will prove to be quite an asset.

Steve and Raf did it again!.......2005-09-30

I found this book about a month ago while browsing the animation titles at my local bookstore. What initially drew my attention to it was the extremely familiar dog character on its cover (I believe it's name is Dennis, but don't quote me); I was especially pleased to see that Steve and Raf Anzovin, its creators, listed as the book's authors. Steve, the founder of Anzovin Studios, his son Raf, and the team at Anzovin Studios are extraordinarily talented artists, animators, and programmers, with extensive knowledge in all aspects of commercial 3D animation production. Based on my experience with several of their products (use their last name dot com to find their website), I took it straight to the cashier and purchased it without bothering to look through it first. I don't often get excited about a book, but this one lived up to my expectations, it's excellent. Steve and Raf have done it again! Their writing is accessible, clear, and direct; and the visual examples used in each section are contextually appropriate throughout the book.

NB My personal peeve with far too many writers and publishers of technical manuals and textbooks, where specific tables, figures, or photos referenced within a text don't enhance the reader's understanding of the material (add to, support, or clarify its meaning), and their locations are not immediately apparent (whereby its location is logically correlated both visually and contextually, or hopefully more simply stated, referenced visuals are on or near the same page[s] as, the text that references them!).

This book is wonderfully written, while it is not geared to a beagle owner in the "pet" set of mind. It is a wonderful tool and a must have for breeders, serious enthusiasts, exhibitors, etc.... My only suggestion would be for the pictures to be in color vs. black and white.

For show dog breeders / owners.......2001-07-01

I was unhappy with this book. There is a lot of information if you are a breeder or somebody who wants show your dog. Our beagles are pets, however. We have no interest in showing them. Most of the information in the book seemed to be targeted at people who are raising beagles to show. I was looking for a book that would teach me about the dog but also give me a lot of general information: health issues, concerns, training, etc. My other complaint is that the pictures are old & black & white. ..., I expect to at least get clear, sharp color pictures which add more to the detail or point which is being referenced to or explained by the picture.

Without a doubt the best book on dogs of any breed, and a must for every Beagler. Comprehensive and authoritative, giving you an expert's view on breeding, grooming, training, showing and loving your Beagle. The only bad thing is that other breed enthusiasts don't have anything like it. But then, they don't have Beagles either.

Pay special attention to the section on distinguished pedigrees. It helped me find one of the top beagle breeders in the country and eventually get a great dog from them.

SCHOLARLY WORK ABOUT AN INTELLIGENT BREED OF HOUND.......2001-04-10

This book is an excellent comprehensive work about the technical aspects of beagle care. The sections on breeding, ailments and general health care are covered in clear, crisp detail; the technical information that was once privy to vets, breeders and other groups is now accessible to all with an interest in this lively, intelligent little hound.

This work is a compliment to the intelligence of its readers; it gives good, in-depth information without lagging or losing pace.

The photographs are superb and this is certainly something that will either pique one's interest in beagles or for those who own beagles, appreciate their lively, spirited little hounds all the more.

Lots of information about genetics, breeding, and running packs (perhaps too much for the pet owner, interested mostly in a breed overview), presented by obvious experts. Nice, tight section on the history of the breed. Small section about behavior and temperament (wished there had been more on this--personal preference). Wonderful section on beagle ailments. Impressive presentation of beagles of all types. A scholarly work that should delight the beagle faithful, but may be a heavy go for the casual reader.

The photos truly are lovely, but I'm so glad I didn't buy based on reviews - I read a library copy first.

It does start out with some good advice. The Preface talks about choosing your gardening style and doing a bit of planning before digging. The Introduction talks about matching the plant to the site, and urges readers to ask local extension services or nurseries for advice. Invaluable info for a novice gardener, but I don't believe it was ever repeated later in the book.

Alas, the book then takes a nasty turn and descends into the pit of Martha's garden and Martha's terms. Rock powders - perhaps that's the New England name for soil amendments, but you'll have trouble if you ask for them in nurseries around here (unless they've read the book). Her lists of vegetables, perennials, and annuals must be the ones she favors growing in her zone; quite a few of them wouldn't do well in other parts of the country. You'll have to get ideas for your zone from some other book, because they're not in 101.

A lot of basic info is touched upon but not explained very well; for instance, one page is devoted to watering, yet three pages give instructions for casting your very own garden trough.

I didn't much care for her sources at the back of the book, either.

If you are truely a beginner at gardening, this book would be ok but it seems to only scratch the surface. I've read other gardening books and have discovered and benefited more from them than this one. I know it's tempting to buy a book because it says that its for the beginner but in this case, I'd advise beginners to seek more comprehensive books on the topic. They may sound intimidating but in the end, they will make you a better gardener and work for you long after you've moved on from the beginner stage. I abandoned this book after I learned more.

If your just starting out, this is a wonderful reference.......2001-08-21

Don't be fooled by the size of this book. An abundance of information is inside. It is essentially a step by step guide to creating your first garden. If you are more experienced this is probably not the book for you. But for the novice (like me), there aren't many better.

Great reference book with lots of ideas!!!.......2001-07-27

I just love this book. Look, if you've never gardened before, this is a great book to get you started. And, if you have acres of gardens, this book can help you trouble shoot as well. I actually took the raised bed garden idea and made my own this spring with my husband. Our book is covered with dirt and grease spots from all of our referencing!!! We run to it if we are unsure of where to plant a certain veggie or how long it takes to grow a certain seed. This is a good investment.

Bought this book based on the reviews only. It has good photos, but beyond that, I thought is was fluff. Guess I should have known from the title Gardening 101. Maybe it should have been Garden - SQUARE 1. Your results my vary - just my opinion.

An inspiration to young women.......2001-12-18

Lift Up Thy Voice is a compelling tale of two sisters that will inspire young women to speak up and fight for what they believe. This book recounts the significant, yet often ignored role women played in the abolition of slavery. But beyond the facts of history I enjoyed reading the more personal story of the sisters and the effect their strong beliefs had on their personal lives. Even today having strong feminist views is not without its consequences, but these women spoke out at a time when women belonged their fathers and then to their husbands, rarely to themselves. Mark Perry has written an excellent and comprehensive history of this family and I would recommend it to readers interested in women's history as well as African American history.

Mark Perry follows his important last book on the Civil War with this gem about two remarkable American families, one black and the other white. The only remaining question is: Which Hollywood studio will get the film rights? Perry is quickly becoming one of America's best storytellers.
