Not very helpful.......2005-04-13

I bought this book a while ago and am now trying to use it as a reference as I build my own bike starting with just a frameset. The authors obviously know their stuff but I find the presentation of the information in this book somewhat inadequate. They could use more pictures, diagrams, labeling of pictures, etc. Also, obviously the book is very much outdated. I was in the bookstore the other day and glanced thru what I believe is the updated version and it appears to be pretty much the same. I even found the exact same paragraphs and pictures in the updated version. I think this book is okay but I seriously doubt it could serve as your only reference.

Not "Complete" by a long shot........2001-08-28

Maybe I should have known that a book of this limited volume could not possibly have presented a complete treatment of bicycle maintenance and repair, especially for road bikes "AND" mountain bikes. But, what "is" in the book should at least be well presented. It is not. Instead, it appears that this book is written as a reminder for people who already know what the author(s) are talking about and who have done it before, not for Joe Blow / Never done it Before consumer. If you are a rank beginner then the section on changing tires will be of help, but anything else out of this book will leave you frustrated with the sketchy, incomplete, and poorly communicated explanations. Save your money on this book and a work stand and just take the bike to a bike mechanic; or, perhaps look into "Barnett's Manual" or "Sutherland's Handbook for Bicycle Mechanics".

Comprehensive bicycle repair manual in need of update.......1999-06-10

Well written, comprehensive guide with B&W photos and line drawings but the absence of labelling on photographs is a serious oversight. Unfortunately it is overdue for a new edition. A lot has changed since 1994 when this book was published. I hope the editors break information down into smaller, 'easier to bite' sections with future editions.

This is a good book to get started with, but don't expect to see an explanation about your components if you purchased your bike after 1995.

A good introduction to the basics.......1999-01-20

I have to object to the negative reviews posted here--this book is not meant to be a guide to state of the art equipment. And while it might have been useful to include diagnostics, the truth is if you familiarize yourself with the principles of bicycle mechanics and repair elucidated here you should have a good headstart on figuring out any problems which might arise. Copiously illustrated and easy-to-follow, this book is aimed at people (like me) who never thought to take bicycle repair into their own hands. My grease-stained copy will guide me for years to come--if it helps me keep my '91 Trek 830 running as smoothly as it does now I won't need to worry about the latest innovations.

Complete Guide to Bicycle Maintenance and Repair.......2007-04-23

It's surprising to see how much the front and back cover promise only to find out how little information and substance it actually delivers. The book is very basic providing mostly very general information. The chapter on shift levers is particularly incomplete with outdated examples and few details on maintenance and repairs. The book may suffer from trying to cover both road and mountain bikes and doing a poor job with both. Certainly won't purchase another book recommended or endorsed by Bicycling Magazine!

This book changed my life!.......2006-09-08

Before I read this book, I would stare blankly at my bike and never had any clue how it worked. After I started to read it, every little part of the bike took shape and I began to understand how everything fit together, how all the components were made, and how to diagnose problems with them. I started fixing and upgrading my bike, bought a couple of old bikes and refurbished them, and just had a great time doing all of it.

Now, 2 years later, I've gone from a casual cyclist to a huge gearhead who talks, rides, and dreams about bike. I hang out on bikeforums.net and could draw a derailer with a blindfold on. So, that's why I say this book changed my life :-)

Bike repair is not just a great hobby, it's an immensely useful skill! You can save an enormous amount of money and time by doing your own repairs, and you can customize your bike to your heart's content. I've also learned a lot about materials engineering and mechanical design from this hobby.

Disappointing.......2005-06-29

I like fixing and modifying bikes almost as much as I love riding them. I have an extensive toolset and can perform many repairs myself. So..... around 2001 I received this book as a gift and thought that it would be comprehensive and high quality because Bicycling magazine published it. I was very disappointed. --It is poorly organized and indexed. --Most components shown are from the early to mid-1990s. Coverage of modern components (carbon fibre, gripshift, aerobars, areowheels, hydralic brakes, v-brakes, sealed bearings, etc) are either missing or very poor. --Drawings are incomplete. Drawings are used where a picture would be better. --Some pictures are small, unclear, poorly lit, or at weird angles. --Some pictures exist for operations that are very common or clear, while pictures of more complex tasks are missing. --Spelling and grammer errors make it obvious it was not proof-read before publishing.
P.S. The HAYES bike repair book is just as Bad.... similar to the poor quality that many of their car repair books have.

I just wanted to adjust my brakes.......2005-03-20

This book is poorly organized. The photos are not labeled. There is an exploded view of sidepull brakes but no photo or diagram of the actual brakes and what they look like put together.
There is a photo of different bikes but the labels are all black so sometimes it's hard to identify what the pointer is actually pointing to. I'm very disappointed because I just wanted to adjust sidepull and cantilever brakes and I can't figure it out from this book. I really can't tell much from the photos.
I am very disappointed. I thought the revised edition would be better.

Great book but there are better ones out there !!.......2005-02-05

It's a goog book for any "Joe Smoh" looking for his first book on "How to fix and do maintenance on bikes". After seeing and buying "The Haynes Bicycle Book", it makes you wanna throw away the "Bicycling Magazine's Complete Guide..." in the trashcan.

There is a BIG lack of pictures of up-to-date bicycles parts. You know, the parts sold by bike shops and not at a garage sale. Nothing really details on how to bleed a set of hydraulic disc brake system or even how to tune one. Or even the famous V-brake system.

As for suspension tube-up... you might as well save your coins and take your bike to your local bike instead of buying this book.

But if you're looking for the real "bible" on how to repair bikes, here's the best book set: Barnett's Manuals (4 Volumes Set) by John Barnett.

I bought the whole thing and made me realized how much money I've waisted on other bike repair books. Those manuals are by far the best ones released yet (and updated every year or so). They're like the shop manual of any car or truck. Loaded with pictures, graphics, torque charts, "where to" and "not to" grease a bike pictures, the step-by-step procedures of overhauling forks, rear shocks, hydraulic brake systems and so much more. At over 1000 pages, the manual simply got too large to handle! The fifth edition (just released) is separated into four separate volumes for easier handling. The standard soft-back book binding is convertible to loose-leaf format, if preferred, by virtue of perforated pages and 3-hole drilling. And all pages are grease-resistant (gloss).

In other words, get the Barnett's manuals. That will be your best investment for your knowledge.

CADAVER DOG HANDBOOK.......2005-09-25

This is an excellent book! Great for the civilian SAR Dog Handler or a person jutst doing research on the subject.

Tremendous resource book (especially for the Novice and/or Advanced SAR Dog Handler) for trouble shooting Handler/SAR Dog problems and maintaining a training program/profile.

Could also be utilized in conjunction with a qualified/competent instructor.

Best Reference Book Out There.......2002-01-28

I found this handbook well written, organized and thorough. A must have for anyone interested or involved in this specialized field of cadaver dog handlers.

Great information and an easy read to boot...........2002-01-24

For the starting cadaver dog handler this book is a must. I recommend it to all my students. It does an excellent job of detailing the scent imprinting training, establishing a readable alert and the advancement of training. Not only does it cover the handling and training of the dog but discusses in depth the handlers responsibilities and information useful to any agency wishing to deploy the cadaver dog. Excellent information in a basic readable form. Not much experience in scent work needed prior to implementing these techniques. A wealth of information.

This book is filled with great information. It is helpful for the Police Administrator, Back-up Officers and K-9 Handlers. It fills in the void from Technical Training of the Dog to actual street application. Through this book you can learn from others experiences. It is a great starting point for new handlers and some new ideas for seasoned ones. With the info given you can easily adapt it to your current program.

African Americans in Science, Math, and Invention.......2007-02-25

This biographical profile deals with the lives and scientific pursuits of 160 African-American scientists, mathematicians, and their inventions. It is a very well-done piece of work, and an excellent fact book for libraries both public and private. Individual entries can be read independently, which makes it an easy and suitable source of inspiration for young students seeking role models. Individuals covered go back to the 18th century when Benjamin Banneker was the only recognized African-American scientist/inventor.

What I particularly like about the book is its insightful introductory chapter. From it two things stand out. First, the insights of that chapter and the individual entries I read together paint vividly the difficult path many of those included in the book followed. The path was difficult not only because any scientific activity is a difficult pursuit, but also because these people faced very high artificial barriers-to-entry. Second, denied formal education and training, the scientific endeavors of African Americans progressed in a unique way; they began with invention, then science, and math. This is almost the opposite of what happened elsewhere, where the language of math advanced science and led to inventions.

It is quite clear that success in science, as elsewhere, was a function of political freedom. Many of the early African-American scientists, mathematicians, and inventors were people who somehow gained their freedom from slavery. As political freedom increased so too did the number of scientists, mathematicians, and inventors.

Just the Facts, Sir.......2004-06-11

This book on African-American political leaders is a disappointment, and inconsistent with the academic excellence normally associated with Facts on File products. This reference work, with short biographical entries listed in alphabetical order, focuses on those blacks who were either elected to office or ran for office; famous black leaders, such as Martin Luther King, are excluded. There are inconsistencies though. For instance, there is an entry for Jesse Jackson, who ran for the presidency but has never held elective office, but no entry for Al Sharpton, who meets these same criteria. Jesse Jackson, who is controversial for more than his political stances (see Kenneth Timmerman's The Real Jesse Jackson), is accorded kid glove treatment; his misdeeds are almost completely ignored. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Thurgood Marshall are also omitted-a serious oversight considering the legislative power wielded by the modern judiciary. When the entries for Cynthia McKinney and J.C. Watts were compared, bias is undeniable; it ruins the educational value of this work. For instance, this book entirely ignores Representative McKinney's irresponsible statements (i.e., completely unsubstantiated allegations) that Bush had prior knowledge of the 9/11 attacks and her subsequent refusal to offer a real apology. This bit of information is very important, as it was a major factor in the loss of her congressional seat. In the entry on J.C. Watts, the author discusses his role in promoting the 1994 Republican Contract with America. The author states as fact that the Contract with America stipulated tax cuts only for the rich. The fact is that the Contract with America only called for tax cuts. The author is certainly entitled to his opinion, but he should not substitute his opinion for the facts. As a work of this type is needed, this book is recommended only in the absence of more inclusive, balanced works.
