Customer Reviews:
Most excellent book for beginers!.......2007-05-28
I highly reccomend this book. I knew very little about handguns, when I bought this book. This book takes you through everything you need to know when you don't know anything about guns. From selecting a self defense handgun to handling, ammunition, shooting, holsters, Psychological factors, and more.
I believe this is the best book out there for someone just starting out.
One of the Best.......2006-11-08
Well written book that provided valuable information. A good source book that you will go back to again.
Excellent Book!!!.......2006-09-02
I have been carrying handguns concealed for over 10 yeras and this book is probably one of the top 5 books I've read on the subject. It's not about tactics but more on what handguns and accessories work and tips on cleaning and what to buy to clean your gun. They get into specifics with revolvers and autos. I actually went through the book after reading it once and highlighted parts to use as reference. Whether you're new to shooting or looking to carry concealed, I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Good nuggets sprinkled throught the average writing.......2007-01-04
I checked this book out from my local public library. The information contained within is generally good. There are nuggets of valuable information that helped me come up to speed on the domain of using a handgun for personal defense.
This book will fit the bill for newcomers to handguns and existing pistol owners who want to learn how to prepare themselves for personal defense. Novices to firearms of all kinds may start out a little confused. This is not a Handguns for Dummies type book.
The wound potential, cartridge info and the drills were especially of interest to me.
The writing leaves a lot to be desired. This book would have been better if the author had hired a polished editor. I often had to read sentences multiple times in order to understand them because of the way they were worded. There were several typos, which eventually lead you to think the book was rushed to market without any editor at all.
Another problem is that the photos inserted are rarely mentioned in the text. Normally, photos are added to books to aid in the understanding of the text. Those in this book are supplemental, but not referenced, so they feel like afterthoughts, pasted in after the text was all written.
The chapter on cartridges (i.e. calibers) would have been much better if each caliber that was described had a nice close-up photo next to a coin for size reference. The stance photos are too small and not close up enough to identify the important elements that distinguish one from another (Weaver vs horse vs Isosceles).
Yet another problem is the use of jargon without including some kind of glossary or footnotes to explain them. If you don't already hang out with others at the shooting range, some of the jargon will go right past you. Cliches like "...will carry the day" are overused, tiresome and pretentious.
Lastly, I was disappointed with the lack of attention paid to concealed carry. With the title "The Handgun in Personal Defense", you'd think there would be a whole chapter on gun sizes (frame height, grip width, barrel length), holster locations and even the laws for CC. But there was very little information provided.
The top 50 fighting handguns was a good chapter, but the author doesn't explain the order in which they are presented. He also admits that if he couldn't get his hands on it, he didn't include it. Admirable, but a list of good reputable albeit personally untested guns would not have gone amiss. I'm sure there are dozens of experienced folks who read this and wonder "What about the Blarg D40? I've had that gun for years and it's my favorite!"
If you can ignore the very average writing and look for the nuggets of information contained within, you'll get something out of this book. It's worth one read through. For me, I'm glad I checked it out for free and didn't plunk down the $15 MSRP. If I ever find it used for under $7, I'll probably go ahead and buy it.
Book Description
Not since 1956 when Elmer Keith came out with his classic Sixguns has such a comprehensive book on handguns been offered! In Handbook of Handguns, Timothy J. Mullin, author of the "Testing the War Weapons" series, brings pistols into the 21st century. This handbook features more than 40 chapters on all aspects of handguns, including choosing the right police, military and personal defense pistol; learning to shoot one- and two-handed; getting the right pistol-ammo combination; carrying spare ammo and guns; selecting the proper carry method; setting up a shooting school curriculum; collecting handguns; and much more. A must-read for all those interested in firearms or combat shooting.
Customer Reviews:
Better title would be: "Handbook of Handgunnery".......2003-08-25
First of all, the title was misleading, second, the author threw in a few chapters of instructions on making guns trace-proof, how to make zip guns, and other extreamist rightwing jargon. On the other hand, the rest of the book is informative, and provides a nice overview of handguns in general. So, its a good book to have if you are thinking about aquiring a pistol, but not for details about specific guns.
Not recommended.......2003-02-16
This book is quite disappointing. It's title is misleading, since it is in no way "A Comprehensive Evaluation of Military, Police, Sporting, and Personal-Defense Pistols." Mr. Mullin does not evaluate any particular pistols. He does go into the history of the pistol in general and he discusses certain points about revolvers and automatics and calibers, however, this book promises a lot and delivers little. Anyone with a basic knowledge of handguns will find little new or worthwhile here.
The "chapters" of the book often consist of a page or two and offer no real useful information or advice. The author also loves to speak about himself and even includes himself in his list of "shooting notables"...a highly questionable inclusion! One definately gets the impression that Mr. Mullin loves himself and Smith & Wesson, but he doesn't give shooters new to handguns what they need.
I don't want to bash a fellow gun-lover, and Mr. Mullin does offer a few points of interest, but anyone looking for good info on handguns is better served elsewhere. If you are looking for a real evaluation of handguns, try books by Gene Gangarosa Jr. Also, a great book on almost all other aspects of handgun shooting, training and concealed carry is "The Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery" by Massad Ayoob.
One reviewer here (Midwest Review) quoted the back of the book and then gave it 5 stars. I think it gives every book it reviews 5 stars...I would question that and would suggest that Amazon check into that reviewer's practices and (fake?) reviews. I give this book 1 star.
Authoritative referemce that needed editing.......2002-08-10
Useful for the reader, like myself, who knows nothing about handguns. But wordy, poorly organized, and assumes knowledge of guns (&gun acronyms) that novice readers don't possess. Still, this is apparently the only up-to-date reference available on all aspects of handgun ownership, so worth owning for that reason.
An authoritative discussion on all aspects of handguns.......2001-06-05
In Handbook Of Handguns: A Comprehensive Evaluation Of Military, Police, Sporting, And Personal-Defense Pistols, Timothy Mullin presents a comprehensive and authoritative discussion on all aspects of handguns. This invaluable and informative reference will enable readers to choose the right pistol for their purposes; shoot a handgun accurately with both the strong and weak hands, as well as with two-handed grips; learn the gunfighting rules that give the best shot of surviving an gunfire exchange; arrive at the proper handgun/ammo combinations for specific scenarios; determine which modifications can make a handgun better (and which are best left undone); whether or not to carry spare ammo and/or a spare gun; considerations for carrying concealed weapons; selecting an appropriate carry method for any situation; setting up a shooting school curriculum; and even collecting handguns for fun and profit. If you are contemplating obtaining a pistol, or how best to care for and employ and pistol you already own, the Handbook Of Handguns is an invaluable reference and highly recommended reading for your safety and well-being.

Presents an inviting approach to developing conversation fluency. This book presents picture dictionary-type pages, along with conversation and grammar practice, that provide readers with the vocabulary and speaking skills they need for everyday life. For beginning ESL learners.
Customer Reviews:
Slightly disappointing - better for teachers than students.......2007-04-23
More a series of detailed vocabulary lists arranged by topic than an actual conversation book, this ESL book - approximately half of Conversation Book 2 - helps students find the appropriate word for everyday activities. This seems like a better resource for teachers than a book for students - given the price - and should be supplement by a worksheet of at least 10-15 questions. When I taught at a local community college, this was the assigned textbook and few students wanted to buy it. On the other hand, this book forced me to create many conversation worksheets to supplement the text.
conversation starters.......2001-02-09
I use this book in a beginning level English class for Hispanics. I work all day at a computer-related job and volunteer teach ESL two nights a week. I really do not have enough time to think of new conversation starters all the time. I find that this book used in conjunction with other material is ideal for low level adults. It provides a non threatening, informative introduction into American life. It is a fun way to learn the basics.
it's interesting.......1998-06-27

Customer Reviews:
THIN; In more ways than one.......2007-08-28
"Informative but Incomplete" is, I believe, the "kinder and gentler" way to review this book. I should first review the book, and then offer my assessment of its value.
The Book: Thin--both in quantity of content, and in depth of content. What is there is OK, but there's not all that much there; and what is there only scratches the surface of what one would want (or need) to know if one is serious about getting into the keeping and care of gold fish.
To be sure, there is some interesting and unexpected information and tips offered in this book--and for that I am thankful. The book simply does not go "far enough" in giving this information nor offer any depth or background for it.
The Value of the book: I would have no problem if this were in a pets and hobbies section of an elementary school library--possibly even in a middle school library. However, I do not believe that there is much of value to an adult aquarist (neophite, novice, or beyond)to be found in this book. I found similar, and in some cases better information in some brochures and pamphlets put out by TetraCare.
In short, No. I do not suggest this book as a candidate for a 21st Century wave of book burnings. Neither do I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn very much about setting up a goldfish aquarium, and about caring for the little creatures.
In my teaching days, if this book were submitted as a paper, I would give it a "C," and suggest that it be redone for a better grade.

Goldfish Bible.......2006-11-22
After killing several types of goldfish by ignorance, this Hargrove edition saved my life and the life of my latest fishies. They have been alive and well and disease-free for over a year now. Easy to understand tips and advice, with step-by-step set up and care information. I am recommending all public libraries purchase this edition... especially for all those unprepared families who win goldfish at carnivals.
Informative but incomplete.......2004-03-08
I found that the Essential Goldfish was decently-written and had a lot of pictures; however, the pictures were not very informative. Pictures should serve to augment the information in the text, and not as eye-candy. For example, in the chapter describing the different types of goldfish, pictures of each of the described goldfish and desirable traits would reinforce the given descriptions. Likewise, in the chapter on plants describes many plants that mix well with goldfish, but doesn't show pictures of each plant.
I found that there were some key bits of information missing. The author states that certain kinds of goldfish cannot be mixed together, and gives a few examples. A chart of compatible types would be helpful. Likewise, the chapter on breeding gives some good tips, but it doesn't actually explain how to differentiate between males and females!
All you need in a goldfish book.......2002-08-02
I recently entered the world of goldfish ownership. To prepare for the experience, I read many books on the topic (checking them out from the library), and looked at many more in the local bookstore. After reading some pretty scholarly tomes as well as some light, "So You Have a Goldfish" fare, I decided that this book, The Essential Goldfish, is everything a beginner like me needs.
The book starts by swiftly covering the basic varieties of goldfish, providing enough information so that you can tell the difference between the types and so that you can make an informed decision on what kind you want and which kinds to put together (and to avoid putting together). Along with that basic information, it gives guidelines for choosing your goldfish, and for creating a home for your goldfish.
Next, the book addresses aquarium maintenance, plants, feeding (with some surprising facts about what you can feed your goldfish), health, and even breeding, and concludes with a list of resources and an index.
As a professional indexer myself, I would say that the index is the weakest part of the book. There are terms that are indexed where the term is mentioned, but not defined or discussed in any way, and then other places where the term actually is defined, but is not in the index. In this case, the book is small enough and well organized enough that one can still find most of what one is looking for, but in the case of at least one term, one would have to read every page quite carefully to find the definition.
I should mention that this book is an abridged version of the older "The Goldfish: An Owner's Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet (Owner's Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet)," by Carlo De Vito and Gregory Skomal. Some of the sections in both books are nearly identical. However, the outdated information in the older edition was removed for this edition, and this edition is also more attractive and easier to hold and handle than the earlier edition.
In summary, setting aside the weakness of the index, and after having read several books on goldfish, I would heartily recommend this book for the beginner and intermediate goldfish owner. It is complete enough, small enough, and focused enough that you are more likely to read it from cover to cover, thereby giving your goldfish a better chance of being properly cared for.

This exciting book is aptly named!.......1998-11-22
As a collector of American Folk Art I always wondered what guided my purchases. Only now do I understand, through the collector's and the author's eyes, that I too have focused on the Spiritually Moving. Anyone who would like to view one of the finest private collections would appreciate adding this table top book to his/ her library.
Masterpiece.......1998-08-19
Spritually Moving, a Collection of American Folk Sculpture, produced by Harvey Kahn and Tom Geismar accomplishes in one book what decades of collecting often never achieves. To blur the line between American Folk Art, Contemporary and Fine Art is the ultimate lesson.
Book Description
A clear, nontechnical explanation of how plants work, and our bestselling book. It succeeds in explaining the complex processes of plant growth, functions, adaptation, responses, and reproduction in simple language. As the author intended, the gardener can come to understand a plant "from the plant's point of view."
Customer Reviews:
no title.......2005-11-18
Absolutely fascinating book, written with an obvious awe and love of the plant kingdom. Pictures are great; so are drawings. Author makes very clear what can be a complicated subject. Really renews one's love of gardening. Included are a few practical hints as well. Tells how plants are constructed and how they grow; all about each part of a flower; what happens to water after roots draw it from the soil; a most readable explanation of photosynthesis, why gardeners prune, all about stems and roots, what happens inside seeds, etc. I really learned a lot. Especially about why certain gardening practices are beneficial to plants - why we do the things we do, and the true miracle of life that plants are. We exist because of the life of plants.
"Botany for Gardeners" is not for every gardener.......2004-10-26
I found this book to be helpful as a overview type coverage in botany, but it left a lot to be desired. It was not written for gardeners as the title may imply. This is a rather heavy text for the ordinary gardner, and not enough for a Botany student. I found the text to be poorly arranged, with poor chapter content. This is a text that would be good for a gardener that is really interested in learning more, but leaves a lot to be desired in some of the explanations.
Not really for gardeners.......2002-11-17
I love gardening, reading, and science, so I was very hopeful when I saw the title of this book. The title sounds very interesting. This book left me disappointed. It felt like work to read. There were interesting tidbits about plants, but they were buried in mind-numbing details.
Opening the book at random I find this quote:
"The chemical name for natural auxin, produced by plants, is indole-3-acetic acid, or IAA. Several synthetic substances (naphthaleneacetic acid, or NAA; 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, or 2,4-D, etc.), having auxin-like effects when applied to plant tissues, have been studied and are used commercially."
Fortunately, the entire book isn't written this way, but there are way too many sentences just like this one.
Terrific book for gardeners wanting to know more.......2002-04-24
As a gardener, I found this book to be a great introduction to botany. It is not a simple book, but a very well written book that takes the details of botany down to a beginner's level.
There's a lot of technical details here. It's not an easy breeze to get through it, as I'm sure a full semester's class in Botany might be.
I've heavily underlined this book and refer to it often. I hope to take a college course in Botany after plowing my way through this book. I use the term plow not because the writing is hard to read, but because so many technical details are covered. The writing pushes you along because it is so interesting.
This is a great book.

B is for botany and bad.......2000-12-08
In the early 90's, I had the opportunity to teach a beginning botany class to home gardeners. The class had been taught for several years and Capon's book had been choosen for the text. I read the book and was surprised by the flagrant inaccuracy on topics such as plant anatomy and photosynthesis. The chapters were poorly arranged and overly technical. Since people as whole tend to remember what they were first taught as law, it disturbed me that many gardeners may be misguided.

Book Description
This volume deals with the "discovery of nature" in the 12th century, focusing on its epistemological consequences for the speculative understanding of nature. A symbolic understanding is gradually replaced by an original interest, guided by reason alone, in the structure, constitution and process of the physical world. The growing knowledge of the "natural world" - which took the form of a systematic knowledge of causes - parallels attempts to establish a coherent "scientia naturalis". The main protagonists of the so-called "School of Chartres" characterize the goal of this "philosophia mundi" by reference to Timaeus 28A, as a search for the "legitimate cause and reason" of natural beings and structures. This incremental discovery of nature is linked to the development of physics as a science of nature; it leads to an "eveil metaphysique" (M.D. Chenu) and must be understood as one of the most important causes for the growing interest in Aristotle's writings (and in particular with the "libri naturales"). The discovery of nature in the 12th century thus provides an important philosophical impetus for the wider assimilitation of the Aristotelian corpus. At the same time, it leads to the development of an original and distinctively medieval model of natural philosophy.
