    Book Description

Because of developments in powerful computer technology, computational techniques, advances in a wide spectrum of diverse technologies, and other advances coupled with cross disciplinary pursuits between technology and its greatly significant applied implications in human body processes, the field of biomechanics is evolving as a broadly significant area. Now in four volumes, Biomechanical Systems, Techniques, and Applications explores the many areas of significant advances, including dynamics of musculo-skeletal systems; mechanics of hard and soft tissues, muscles, bone remodeling, hard and soft tissue interfaces, blood flow, air flow, flow-prosthesis interfaces, and impact; cardiovascular and respiratory biomechanics; and dynamics of many machine interactions.

1 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2002-03-30

If you are a mountain bike racer who knows little to nothing about sponsorship, you'll be fascinated by this book. If you are not, you'll be disappointed. Not being the former, I am the latter.

3 out of 5 stars Check list type book.......1999-12-03

The good thing about this book is that it offers a step by step explanation of what to do to find and negotiates with sponsors. Nothing earth shattering here but it nice to have a check list to work on to make sure you are doing the job properly.

5 out of 5 stars Great crash course for the aspiring mercenary athlete........1999-11-04

As a family man, earning serious moola was not the reason I bought this book. And that's the great thing about it. Whether your goal is to pay the bills, raise some funds or simply get some swag, this book will get you going in the right direction with *realistic* expectations. Highly recommended.

"Baudelaire, Poe, Dream-Shakespeare, Hollywood, panto, fairy tale: [Angela] Carter wears her influences openly, for she is their deconstructionist, their saboteur." So writes Salman Rushdie in his introduction to this essential dark fantasy collection, the complete stories (1962-1993) of a master of perfervid prose, dark eroticism, northern Gothic exuberance (think Isak Dinesen), and Grand Guignol imagery. (You may be familiar with Neil Jordan's movie The Company of Wolves, based on one of Carter's tales.) As the New York Times writes, "There is an archaic cruel streak in many of these stories. Violence is always a possibility; beauty and courage and passion may prevail, but the weak and the timid go to the wall. In this, Angela Carter is true to the material that inspired her. After all, one reason the old fairy tales have survived for hundreds of years is that they do not try to disguise what the world is really like."

4 out of 5 stars angela carter, where have you been hiding..........2006-02-01

angela carter is one of my newly aquired favorite reads.her poetic insight and humor are matched by none. she is also a feminist, and has a macabre sense of direction in her stories. if you appreciate the fantastical and visually stimulating world of imagination, mixed with sexually-driven directness, try this book. very entertaining. smart but not smug. unique and creative in a world of repetitiveness...i also loved "the infernal desire machines of dr. hoffman" - a novel by carter which delighted me and made me sad to finish reading.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic.......2003-10-03

In 'Notes From the Front Line', Carter said that she was not in the remythologizing business but in the demythologizing business. Anna Katsavos asked Angela Carter what she meant by that. Angela said, 'Well, I'm basically trying to find out what certain configurations of imagery in our society, in our culture, really stand for, what they mean, underneath the kind of semireligious coating that makes people not particularly want to interfere with them.'

Simply stated, Angela Carter has taken icons and myths we were all raised with and given them back to us in a form we know and trust. In stories. Her stories are adult fairy tales; lush, penetrating, uninhibited and dark.

An introduction by Salman Rushdie sets the perfect tone for the reading ahead. It is the closest to gushing the man has ever come. He says, these stories are also a treasure , to savour and to hoard. They begin with her early works, from 1962-6. The Man Who Loved the Double Bass tells the story of a musician in madly love with his instrument. Could he live without her? In the section called Fireworks; Nine Profane Pieces from 1974, Carters work begins an ethereal exploration on of the psyche in achingly beautiful prose. Her ability to write fantastical tableaus is showcased. In The Executioners Daughter, an executioner is told to execute his only son. The setting, itself, becomes a character. In Penetrating to the Heart of the Forest, a brother and sister are nudged into exploring the a dark forest and its hidden fruit tree. The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories is next, featuring writings from 1979. These are fairy tales retold for adults and contains some of the most stunning and psychological erotic written. Black Venus contains writing from 1985 and American Ghosts and Old World Wonders, work from 1993. Uncollected Stories contains work from 1970-81, featuring The Scarlet House, about a woman trapped in a house by a master of Chaos.

These short stories are profane, wise, surreal, unrepentant and brilliant. The Tiger's Bride alone is worth the price of admission in to this magical world.

5 out of 5 stars Tiny masterpieces that will remin with you forever.......2003-02-20

Having enjoyed the novels of Angela Carter, I decided to give her short stories a try.
Written in the same poetic style, these stories require reading very slowly in order to enoy the language. The dense sybolism requires that you think about each story for a while before proceeding to the next. In fact I would recommend reading only a few at sitting.
Like any author of short stories, Carter wrote a few that failed to draw me in. But these failures only point to the stengths of those that did.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2002-07-07

I was first introduced to Carter in my women's lit class, with "The Company of Wolves," (which still stands as my favorite Carter story). I was shocked that I had never read any of her writing before. A few days later, I went and ordered "Burning your Boats." I haven't been disappointed.

Regardless of whether I enjoy the story (and I must admit, I haven't enjoyed all of them), I cannot help but be blown away by her writing. It literally takes my breath away. She is one of the only authors that has this effect on me. Her retellings of fairy tales leave me in awe.

The more of her I read, the more obsessed I become. She is truly an amazing writer. I constantly ask myself how anyone can be so talented. I just don't understand it. Her writing is nothing short of stunning.

    4 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2001-12-19

Be aware that Carter's excellent story of Lizzie Bordenis edited in this editon. The fabulou8s dinner scene, described in great detail in other editons of this story has been deleted from this version. E. Hobbs

5 out of 5 stars Great Rabbit Information.......2006-03-13

A local non-profit rabbit sanctuary recommended this book to me as a resourse, and it's been a big help.

5 out of 5 stars I Wish This Book Had Been Available Years Ago.......2005-10-24

I acquired a rabbit in March of 2001, rescuing him from an uncertain fate in a vacant lot. In September of 2001, he ate the buttons off my remote control. If I had had this book back then, I'd still have buttons on my remote. Yes, the remote control is a favored chew toy of a busy bunny, acording to Ms. Moore. I believe it. He has since bitten the "on/off" button on the remote for my cable, too.

That said, this is an excellent, no-nonsense guide to keeping a rabbit in the house. It describes breeds, feeding, medical considerations and, most importantly (to me, at least), how to "read" a rabbit. If you've never had a rabbit before, you may find them a bit inscrutable compared to a smiley, waggy dog or a purring, kneading cat.

The breed descriptions are interesting. You'd think that it was "big white bunny", "big lop eared bunny", and "tiny bunny". But, there are a lot of breeds, from the Flemish giant, who is the size of a Maine Coon cat, to the Netherland Dwarf, who is the size of an overfed guinea pig. There are a lot of coat desriptions from the Dutch rabbit, which looks like a police car, to the Jersey Wooly, who looks like a tribble from "Star Trek".
(I consider mine a mini Vacant Lot Lop.)

There's a section on special needs rabbits. This is an interesting facet of rabbit-keeping that I was unaware of when I picked up a stray rabbit in a vacant lot and took him home. Rabbits are fragile and can injure their backs easily. Many knowledgeable rabbit keepers are able to provide an injured or even paralysed rabbit in a comfortable and happy existence. This book outlines care for such delicate creatures.

There are a few black and white photos, but the descriptions are really well done enough that those photos are just there for seasoning.

Another bonus in this book, is that it appears to be in 14 point type, which meant I did not have to wear glasses to read it, but my middle-aged presbyopia is another story.

4 out of 5 stars good book for beginners and "intermediates".......2005-04-27

I was pleased to see a new house rabbit book on the market. While I found it slightly less complete than the House Rabbit Handbook by marinell harriman, it still covers most of the basics. It is a bit weak in the following areas:
The author writes about rabbits through an observation of her own house rabbits and I disagree with a few statements she made in the book.
Lack of colored pictures or many pictures at all
facts about nutrition not all 100% accurate.
Howver, I'd recommend it to one who is new to rabbits or has some experience but wants to learn a bit more. Overall, it is an enjoyable book to read and is the type of book you would probably need to read cover-to cover as opposed to using it as a reference

I bought this book about 10 years ago and it turned into my Florida "Bible". Just about every plant, especially garden plants, is included. On one page you can see all the necessary information that is needed to be a successful Florida gardener.

I loaned it to a friend, a plant "nut", recently transplanted from Pennsylvania. She was trying to grow plants the old northern way, which wasn't working out. Eventually success is growing in her garden.

The book became a Christmas gift and a "Welcome to Florida" gift (and a gift for me, my old book is very worn) this year. Use it and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The Florida plant chronicles.......2005-12-31

FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS lists native and non-native plants growable in the northern, central or southern parts of the state. It's an updated version of the late Professor John V Watkins' book. Professor Watkins taught landscape horticulture at the University of Florida. But he was well known outside the campus, for his gardening- and landscape-related radio series and writings published as books and magazine articles.

Professors Thomas J Sheehan and Robert J Black fill the empty space left with Professor Watkins' death. They've added to and modernized his classic landscape plant manual. Throughout, they've stayed true to Professor Watkins' original mission of writing for an audience of university students, nurserymen, master gardeners, and homeowners of our Gulf states.

Their book is nicely organized for that purpose. There's a listing of over 400 plants. The book closes with a helpful model planting guide, list of invasives, glossary, and an index of common and scientific names.

Their book gives more information and puts in more plants than the original work by Professor Watkins. But their book isn't comprehensive. It's not a case of everything Professor Watkins listed, along with add-ons. In fact, they've left out some "old favorites," partly because some have been called "invasive" by the Florida Exotic Plant Council. In part, too, they wanted the book to fall within the page range known as "popular size."

FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS is nevertheless very workable, with a lot of clearly illustrated and organized information and with no useless information. Each plant is listed by common name. The scientific name is given below, with the way to say it and the English meaning. There's also a sketch of each plant. I miss the beauty of color drawings and photos. But the black-and-whites are so well done that the plants should be easily known by form and shape, often more telling than color.

The information is conveniently slotted into family; relatives; type of plant; height [in Florida]; zone [in north, central or south Florida]; how to identify; habit of growth; foliage; flowers; fruits; season of maximum color; landscape uses; habitat; light and soil requirement; salt tolerance; availability; culture; propagation; and pests. Sometimes, there's a note slot, such as for sweet acacia "This plant is cultivated in the south of France for its flowers, which are made into a very fine perfume."

FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS would be an interesting read not only for gardeners and landscapers. I was impressed with how many of the plants are already common household words as household plants: Dieffenbachia, ficus, jade plant, spider plant, and wandering jew. Others are already known as "public places" trees, such as my favorites: American hornbeam, black olive, geiger, gumbo limbo, lignum vitae, red maple, river birch, and southern magnolia. Still others are already known as rock garden plants, such as my favorites: agave, aloe, aluminum plant, bush zinnia, Florida yew, kalanchoe, peperomia, ponytail palm, prickly pear, royal fern, spineless yucca, and variegated pineapple. And still others are already known as water garden plants, such as my favorites: African iris, Asiatic jasmine, black tupelo, firecracker plant, galingale, ginger lily, oleander, peperomia, pittosporum, primrose jasmine, sweet bay, and torch ginger.

It was particularly interesting to see how many of my favorites were listed as natives, such as: Adam's needle, beauty berry, buttonwood, coontie, frangipani, fringe tree, seven year apple, Spanish bayonet, sweet shrub, and tulip tree. In many cases, with natives we reduce the use of hazardous materials such as pesticides. For natives have their own natural controls. They're part of wider plant, bug, bird and animal communities that have built up a balance between over- and under-population in the same space over the same time. Just as important, natives reduce yardwaste. So many have attractive flowers, fruits and parts that can be reused as and recycled into artistic creations, such as dried bouquets and holiday wreaths.

I purchased this book because it was highly recommended in a Florida Gardening magazine. I am new to Florida recently moving here from the Northeast. I was looking for someway to link plants I see in neighbors' yards with what might work in our spaces.
The only thing I was disappointed in is that the book's pictures are not in color. Colors would help me better link plants I see with what's in the book.

This is a worthwhile book for a number of reasons, however, it has one major omission. The positive factors: 1) Excellent plant descriptions including details like salt tolerance level; 2) wonderful (and most appreciated) treatment of botanic names by giving the pronunciation and derivation of the Latin words (Thanks!). The omission concerns color photographs of the plants discussed. The publisher included a few color pages of plant drawings which are mostly useless and confusing. A good garden book needs to have extensive color photographs. I am sure that the author would agree!!

This BETTER HOMES book is photographed beautifully, as are all the Better Homes books.

This is a hardback book that will hold-up for years to come. The author has the reader take a quick test to see which SEASON the reader is closest to. Then the author shows photos of how each Season-personality decorator can enhance their favorite style. Also, since many people are a combination of two styles, the author gives ideas on how to blend two styles at once---in harmony.

This book is mostly photos that will inspire. It is easy to follow & read. It incorporated some modern styles and some more classic cottage styles.

                        Download Description

"The police chief who led one of the tensest manhunts of the early twenty-first century takes readers behind the scenes of this notorious murder case that galvanized a nation. They were the most terrifying three weeks of any month in recent history. From Maryland to Virginia, ordinary Americans feared for their lives, too frightened to do normal, everyday things like pump gas at the local station or allow their children to frolic in parks and school playgrounds. For twenty-one nightmarish days, a nation was caught in the grip of a crime spree that cut across state lines, at the mercy of a pair of serial snipers with the most chilling M.O. of all: They chose their victims at random. Now, a year after those horrific events, comes a book by the man whose courage, integrity, and tenacious dedication helped to finally crack the case. Three Weeks in October follows Police Chief Charles A. Moose into the taut days and nights of his investigation, from the first shocking murder through the massive team efforts of law enforcement in several counties to the final break that ultimately led to the snipers' capture. Written from his unique insider perspective, it is also Moose's inspiring personal story, detailing his rise from a young African-American cop battling prejudice and racism to a respected homicide chief in the highest ranks of the Montgomery County police department. Suspenseful, moving, and compulsively readable, this is an unwaveringly honest and intelligent account by a man who wouldn't rest until two of the most bizarre killers America has ever known were brought to justice."

2 out of 5 stars Nothing more to know about from this book.......2007-04-03

I was really looking foward to reading this book. Yet having been glued to the media like everyone else during these three weeks, there was never more I learned about the investigation, profile etc of the snipers. This was more like an autobiography of Chief Moose. At times how he became Chief was interesting but mostly very dry and hard to keep focus jumping back and forth between topics about himself then back to the investigation.

2 out of 5 stars Less than average book about the D.C. Sniper case.......2007-02-06

Initially this novel will take you into the fear and complexity that surrounded the case of the killing spree caused by the Beltway sniper attacks in 2002. I was intrigued to read about how tough it was for the police to tackle a "serial killer" that ultimately did not leave any kind of pattern in regards to victims' backgrounds or relations for which the police could build a case on. Although some vilified Moose after the case was wrapped up, The book does not portray Charles A. Moose in a poor light in regards to the wild goose chase over leads such as the white box van, because at the time that was really all they had to go on.

The problem with this inexpensive book that is centered on a modern day high profile crime is that it ultimately drowns in an accolade ridden biography of Moose himself. Charles Moose was the Montgomery County, Maryland Police Chief who headed the investigation when the killings first happened. The book lightly touches on the locales and victims, skimming over them in a consecutive and timely manner to constantly go back to what Moose was "going through". The book spends way to much time going back into his history and background, and we ultimately learn more about his own family than the victims, or the eventual backgrounds and cause when the two men who are responsible for the deaths are apprehended and identified.

I just felt that this book was much more of a biography and "pat on the back" of Moose than of the overall case itself. It doesn't do a good job of delving into the other agencies and people involved in researching the case, and does little to show the leads that really led to the capture. If you want to know what was going through Moose's mind during all of this, then by all means get the book. If you would rather learn more about the overall case and the other people who worked around the clock besides Moose to help bring justice to those involved, then I would recommend looking elsewhere. Ultimately a disappointing read about this recent high profile crime in our country.

3 out of 5 stars Three Weeks in October + Three Decades about Moose.......2006-10-02

I've been wanting to read this book for a long time, and finally did. I got very interested in this subject because I followed the story very closely in the news at the time. Then, during about a week and half during the time of many of the shootings, my mother and I were on a road trip from Rhode Island to Arkansas. I remember getting into the Maryland/northern Virginia area and thinking I'd better have plenty of gas so we wouldn't have to stop in those areas. We actually stayed at a hotel in the northern Virginia area one night. We decided, because of the snipers on the loose, to just go to the Wendy's drive thru across the street, and bring dinner back to the hotel. At the hotel, I had the news on, and the shooting that had occurred that day was only about 45 minutes from where we were staying that night. The next morning, we repacked the car hurriedly and got back on the highway - without stopping for breakfast. We remember looking suspiciously at every white box van we saw on the drive. Reading this book brought back a lot of those memories for me; but in general, this book was problematic for me. Although it was intersting to learn more about Chief Moose's life and background - it was heavily a story about him, with the story of the sniper ordeal added in. Every other chapter was literally an autobiography about Moose - some details more intersting than others. There's one chapter in the middle of the book that is huge - about 40 pages in the paperback version, and it's all about Chief Moose's life. I thought I would never get through some parts of this book. What annoyed me a lot is that at least in the edition I read, there are typos or other errors. For one, there is a reference to the ill-blamed Richard Jewel from the Atlanta Olympic Park bombings. The Olympics is referred to as the 1998 Olympics, when I know it was the 1996 Olympics. I found at least two sentence strung together with no period in between. There are countless fragmented sentences in this book. Also, I found a sentence that had "at at" in it. Did anyone proofread this text, I wonder? Besides this nitty-gritty stuff, I was a little disappointed that this book really didn't shed too much more light on this crime that the public might have already gotten from news reports. There were a few insights here and there, but they come really late in the book, when I was already decided that this book was 'just ok'. I feel that it is still worthwhile to read, but if you're interested in it, be prepared to learn more about Chief Moose than you intended, and not as much about the crime at hand than you thought you would learn. In the end, I thought maybe this was his way of dealing with this whole ordeal - to talk more about himself and to have some closure in this chapter in his life - I don't know. I guess it's easy for me to say ... I've never walked in his shoes.

3 out of 5 stars Three Weeks Brings Insight Into a Police Chief In An Unprecedented Case.......2006-09-18

Three Weeks In October is the type of book you look for when you are trying to get an understanding of the humanity of law enforcement and what goes on behind the scenes of a high profile case.

In this book, it appears that the author wanted to capture that aspect in the writing of this book about the Serial Sniper Case/Chief Moose Autobiography.

As with most high profile cases, the top law enforcement officials such as Chief Moose are subject to the criticism of armchair quarterbacks and talking heads that have never been in a case of that nature, but are happy to give more than their fair share of what THEY think SHOULD have been done-- this is of course only AFTER the fact. It's almost like critics running in front of a parade and taking credit for the parade after it's already started. With that level of recognition, good and bad criticism goes with the territory and the author understood that, as he references in his book.

Three Weeks gives an understanding of what makes Chief Moose tick and coming from that perspective and his upbringing, it gives you more of a human understanding of what went on behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

Upon reading such a book, it helps to have an open mind and the right perspective toward wanting to understand the person, the elements of law enforcement and what they go through in handing high profile cases.

Law enforcement is a very demanding and tough job. Handling tragedies and situations like the 9/11s, Snipers and Katrina puts our people in uniform in positions where the community's expectations take the human element away. It is not fair to them, but it's a reality. It makes it even tougher when they are placed in situations that have never happened before and there is not play book in which to stop or prevent the situation.

Three Weeks goes into detail of how Chief Moose was placed in a "Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't" type of situation. No matter if he had did everything right, he still would've been subject to harsh criticism. From day one, when the killings started, the community's emotions ran high and they expected their law enforcement to put a stop to it immediately. When it did not happen, there was that perception of fear and that their law enforcement agency was a failure in their ability to get the job done, whether it's fair or unfair.

In fact, any other person in Chief Moose's position, regardless of race, age or location would have been subject to the same backlash-- Just ask former Jefferson County (Colorado) Sheriff Stone of the Columbine tragedy, Mark Brown, formerly of FEMA during Hurricane Katrina or former Boulder Colorado Police Detective Arndt of the JonBenet Ramsey case as examples.

Few people outside of law enforcement ever understand or recognize the human element of the profession, where people do make mistakes and how it takes an even greater toll on their career, their health and reputation. Chief Moose does the most appropriate thing in ensuring that all of the agencies, federal, State and local get equal credit in cracking a case that had nearly impossible odds of getting solved.

Three Weeks perhaps should've provided more balance between both of those elements and it would've been an outstanding book. Perhaps a separate Chief Moose biography and another book on the snipers would've been even better.

Overall, it was still a good book to read and provides perspective not only into the case, Chief Moose and the law enforcement profession, but also the often forgotten human element.

1 out of 5 stars Lookie Here, I's Be Da Moose!.......2006-01-01

Here's to Chief Moose for single-handedly allowing the D.C./VA/Maryland Snipers to operate for so long. He went on television with his mythical white van driven by the mythical white racist gun-totin' drivers, meanwhile the real snipers, who just happened to be black AND Muslim, drove around in a Caprice and shot people in the head. Now, he wrote a book in which he tried to justify his poor police work. He was also an enemy of racial profiling (if they were black) only to use reverse racial profiling in this case (which failed, because the snipers were black). It's only in America where we can commend people for being "heroes" because they simply do their job. In this case, "Moose" did his job poorly, and the public, gratified that it didn't have to worry about the snipers anymore, kissed his butt in true fashion. Amazing how our society rewards poor performance.
Get this book if you are a true sucka. I'm sure Moose will thank you for it. For my money, I'm gonna invest in a bullet proof vest, just in case this ever happens again. Because I sure as hell can't rely on Moose-clones to protect me.
