During its operation, the U.S. Cavalry School at Fort Riley, Kansas, developed a system for teaching horsemanship that produced notable results. This manual, compiled by a board of officers from their own firsthand experience and from study of the methods used in other leading equestrian schools throughout the world, set forth that system of fundamental riding techniques in remarkably clear and practical fashion, for use by instructors, beginners, and riders at every stage.

Virtually unobtainable for many years, the manual has now been edited for today's civilian riders by Gordon Wright, the well-known equestrian teacher who himself served as an instructor at the Fort Riley Cavalry School during World War II, and who has also written a personal Foreward.

Step-by-step, this work guides the instructor and pupil through every facet of horsemanship and horsemastership. From a basic preparation in using the mental faculties of the horse, it goes on to articles of equipment and their proper adjustment, the rider's position, suppling exercises, the application of the aids, riding hall movements and customs, jumping, and cross-country riding.

The new illustrations y Sam Savitt, drawn especially for this volume, are accurate and revealing visual complements to the text, A historically unique, basic, and thoroughly useable work, The Cavalry Manual of Horsemanship and Horsemastership belongs in every horseman's library.

**My Review**
I was a bit disappointed in this text; I thought it would be more military-based. It really doesn't have much to do with the US Cavalry except for the Sam Savitt illustrations. That said, it was a very good book on English riding with many practical ideas.

While the illuminations of this text are nice, there is not much description of the actual text. Smith spends much of the little text interpreting the pictures, which is helpful, but there is no translation of the text. More like a picture book.

What drivel! Couldn't get past page 20

MY LIFE BEFORE AND AFTER ROBERTS RULES.......1999-04-29

I was a twenty year old who aspired to achieve. I had all the hopes and dreams imaginable. I had the fire in my belly and was confident that I would make it big when I grew up. Someone had given me Roberts Rules as a Christmas gift and somewhere around the end of January I decided to read it. Well MR. Roberts Rules have inspired me to get going in my quest for success. Although I have not acheived my ultimate goals I have conquered many. Some say you have to see it to believe it. I say yes but in the meantime Read this book. An be on your was to SUCCESS!!!!!

I had no idea who Roberts was when I picked up his book. But good gawd I am impressed! This guy is ballsy and brash and inspiring. He belongs in my book on P.T. Barnum, "There's a Customer Born Every Minute." I admire him for coming out of nowhere, with nothing, and making millions with sheer balls, hard work, and plenty of honesty. An absolutely terrific book! Reading it feels like being at a high action boxing match or basketball game. Riveting!

Nothing that I didn't know before........1998-11-19

The book has its moments but it clearly hasn't told me anything new. This is basically a mainstream success story and it doesn't guide me into a new direction. Next?

good for a second drink mixing book on the shelf.......2001-07-07

entirely old fashioned drinks, many you may have never heard of before. since old fashioned drinks have become trendy lately, more of these recipies are popping up on hip specialty drink lists of lounge bars. don't expect to use any of the latest schnapps with these drinks, and many of them include natural ingredients for flavoring.

be sure to have a modern bartending book for pleasing the crowd, but this should be for secret specialties from years gone by.

Lots of Drinks, but Nothing Modern.......1998-07-17

This book is filled with different drinks, but it seems none of them are made today (in the USA, at least) I recommend buying another book if you plan on being a bartender or serving drinks at home. If bizarre cocktails from the 20s are what your looking for, then buy this book.

Helped me keep my sanity while helping my best friend!.......2000-07-13

This is one of the more recent and thorough books on skin problems in dogs. Incidentally, skin problems are the most common problem for canines. The book is laid out like an encyclopedia by technical name of problem. It shows pictures of severe cases of many problems, and lists the most common problems by breed. The useful appendices allow you to cross reference your information to be sure you've uncovered all that you can.

Although I would never try to diagnose my own pet, while getting to the root of my Labrador's skin problem (which was a series of severe inhalant allergies), it helped me check up on my vet, ask intelligent questions, and find a fantastic specialist to finally relieve his symptoms. I have broken in the binder on this book as I refer to it constantly, and have many friends call to have me help them find information.

A look back to everyday things.......2001-08-24

This is the latest of Robert Opie's wonderful scrapbooks. The format is deceptively simple, each spread has a big photo devoted to one theme: food packets, teenage magazines, Barbie dolls, film posters, candy wrappers etc. You can see dozens of packets your ma kept in the kitchen cupboards or maybe that car brochure dad had back then, possibly you had one of the twnty toothpaste tubes (page 19) in your bathroom. The 1400 items pictured in this book are mostly what the rest of us would have thrown away, Opie wisely (for us) saved it all for his packaging and print museum in Gloucester, England. This is an excellent resource book for those interested in graphic design of the period
