Good Overview, Nice Photos.......2001-01-06
I picked this book up in Smithsonian Gift Shop. It is pocket sized and has 1 page on about 220 species. Each page has a description of the snake and a good (but small) color photo. It then gives a brief blurb about average size, distribution, habitat, diet, breeding and similar species. Overall, a nice little book - well worth the money. You won't get much detail on any individual species, but there are some neat facts on the overview pages. Well worth it for someone with a basic interest in various snakes around the world -- even if just for the photos. Don't expect a lot of new info. While there are not too many details, they seem to have most of their facts right.

Review for Grammar Smart Junior.......2005-09-07
Great book! The format is set up so that you can work straight through, or easily hop to specific grammar points. Little quizzes help you to see if you are understanding the concepts. I know this book will get a lot of use.
Wonderful Book!.......2001-11-27
I purchased this book to use as part of an 8th grade Grammar curriculum. It is wonderful! The stories and activities made learning the concepts fun. My son didn't even realize that he was doing schoolwork. An excellent choice for anyone learning grammar - or someone just brushing up on their skills. Two thumbs up!
So helpful..........2001-06-15
Terrific book! Was so helpful. I totally recommend it for anyone having trouble learning the rules of grammar!!!
Helpful and Smart.......2001-06-15
This book is filled with useful information and helpful exercises. It helped me to understand grammar concepts my own English teacher could not explain to me. Thanks to this terrific and fun-filled book, I was able to get through 8th grade English easily. My teachers and parents have noticed a change in my papers as well as a better understanding of grammatical concepts. Anyone who is lost in the world of English grammar, should pick up this book.
Book Description

96 designs.......2007-03-15
This was not exactly what I had in mind when I ordered this book. However on recipt I found it to be very useful for what my origional needs were.
The service and delivery were excellent in all respects so that this was again a great Amazon experience.
Ready-to-Use Celtic Designs.......2006-11-10
Service from the seller was good, but I don't know why the book is titled "ready to use". It was listed as designs ready to use as stencils for etching, but it was a lot more work to use it than I anticipated.
Book Description
Written by the same experienced veterinarian responsible for the popular The Well Cat Book, this thoroughly revised and updated reference gives dog owners the skill, confidence, and knowledge they need to raise a healthy pet. Special sections on emergency first aid, breeding and pregnancy, care of puppies are included. 100+ illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Well Dog Book.......2007-08-23
We own a copy of this book from the 1970's. We bought an updated version because we loved it soooo much and passed a copy on to our daughter. It is a classic!
Good Advice.......2007-02-13
As a dog owner, I have referred to this book many times over the years. My nephew is getting his first dog so I gave my copy to him and immediately had to purchase a new one for myself. Dr. Mcginnis gives good advice in a simle direct manner. It is a good adjunct to your own veterinarian.
Real Substance.......2001-05-13
Looking for a reliable and helpful reference in caring for my pets, I have looked at and rejected many, many books published for the general public on dog and cat care. Most of them are so general in approach as to be next to useless.
Dr. McGinnis' "Well Dog Book" and "Well Cat Book" are just fabulous. Every line contains meaty, solid, specific information that lets us do our best for our loving, trusting animals. Dr. McGinnis demonstrates respect not only for animals but for their guardians, too.
I have bought many copies of both books and given them to friends, family, and animal shelters. Now I see these books are out of print... but there is every reason to issue a new printing. If you can find a copy anywhere at almost any price, it's worth it!!
Using as a textbook in animal health introductory class.......1999-02-04
Just an interesting note about this book. I am ordering it for my son who is taking an introductory animal health technology class at the local junior college. It's the required text!
An excellent layperson's dog health handbook........1998-11-29
I have had this book for several years and have used it many times. McGinnis is well-versed in dog health care and her style makes the subject easy to understand. The book is helpful for dog owners whose pets are at any stage of life. It helps owners diagnose a problem, and tells if the dog needs to immediately be seen by a vet or if it can wait for a short time and if so, what the owner can do in the interim to help their pet. The author encourages dog owners to work with their vet for the benefit of the dog. It is obvious that McGinnis loves dogs and wants to help owners and their dogs, and I am very glad that I found this book when it was first published.

Several concurrent trends have created the need for a new book on annual plants. One is the increasing popularity of container gardening, for which these plants are particularly suited. Another is the hottest trend in landscaping -- creating a bold, even jungly look through the use of tropical plants and other dramatic specimens, most grown as annuals in temperate zones. To meet the demand, growers have developed hundreds of new plants and improved cultivars of old favorites. In this Taylor's Guide, buyers will find more than five hundred of the latest, trendiest plants and the best cultivars of the beloved old standbys.
Customer Reviews:
Annuals, tender perennials, and tropicals are all there.......2001-03-24
The Taylor's Guides are known for their great pictures and good cultural information. This book lists annuals as "cool weather, "warm weather" and "tender perennial."
I have often told customers that tender perennial means it is perennial somewhere, but certainly not here. That may not be the case for everyone reading this book. You have to look in the encyclopedia area to see what zone the plant is hardy in. Some tender perennials may be perennial in your climate or only some winters in your climate.
The problem with any book on annuals that includes tender perennials and tropicals is availability. For other categories in the Taylor's Guide, like perennials, shrubs, etc. most of the plants are available from good nurseries.
Annuals is a different story. The best sellers are available. Some of the tropicals are available depending on where you go. The rare or unpopular annuals to only be grown from seed are available from seed vendors and garden centers who sell a variety of seeds. For the tropical combination plants, which are the most interesting listed, you have to go to the better nurseries or mail order sources.
What I am getting at here is how to use this book. Don't have your heart set on a picture in this book. The plant may be only available by seed, and perhaps that does not suit your lifestyle. Regarding the ideas decide if you want to grow from seed or not. With the tender perennials, after you have read about them, decide what you want to try.
This is a great book on annuals. Anyone interested in plnats should buy it. When combining with tropicals and plants from seed, use your common sense.
Attractive, concise and informative.......2000-10-27
The Taylor's series of gardening books have a admirable reputation and it is easy to see why. This update of "Annuals" is in a slightly larger format but still contains the excellent information as the previous edition. A 30 page introduction discusses growing techniques and care throughout the season as well as an insect identification guide. This is followed by the "Gallery of Plants", a 200 glossy section of beautiful photographs of annuals arranged by their Latin name (an index of common names is provided in the back). Each photo is accompanied by a brief description statement and a page number reference to the plant's entry in the "Plant Encyclopedia" section in the last part of the book. Here you will find a detailed description and cultural instructions on how to grow the plant. The book is also an excellent tool for helping you identify unknown plants.
Taylor's Guide to Perennials.......2000-05-04
The colored pictures in order are extremely helpful in identifying plants. There are sun/shade and water information for each plant. Sometimes the common names aren't given and I don't know all of the Latin names for plants.
Book Description
Perennials are every gardener's favorite plants. They provide colorful flowers and leafy foliage, and, best of all, their beauty returns year after year. In this fully illustrated guide, you'll find - The best new cultivars of the beloved old-fashioned plants of grandmother's garden - Exciting new introductions from all over the world - Today's popular ornamental grasses, perfect for combining with other perennials in low-maintenance gardens - Ferns to grow among the flowers And for every plant pictured, you'll find complete growing information as well as notes on how to propagate your own plants to fill your garden with "free" flowers.

Textbook.......2007-09-10
Book was shipped when promised and was exactly as described, so no surprises. I would buy from this source again.
Best source for a novice.......2006-11-04
This book was exactly what I needed. Never seem to know the name of the
flower, and the beautiful photos are invaluable. Very helpful to know what plants work in this time zone, and there are many helpful tips for planting and feeding. A permanent reference in my home.
Nice addition for your gardening library............2004-10-02
George Shenk's book on growing gardens in shade is still one of the best books out there for shade gardening, as far as I am concerned, but TAYLOR'S 50 BEST PERENNIALS FOR SHADE is also very useful. Besides, the Taylor book includes plenty of colorful photographs.
If you're like me and you plant hundreds of tulips every year, in areas that will be plunged into shade when your neighbor's trees leaf out, you probably have discovered the value of "over-planting" perennial flowers (annuals generally require lot's of sun). Taylor's book explains how you go about planting covers for your bulbs, as they go dormant, by adding shade loving plants that will naturalize and hide the dying bulb foliage and thus hide the bulbs neatly until the following spring. (You should be amending the area with bulb food to ensure next year's bloom).
I have a particularly troublesome side yard, under a neighbor's Persian Walnut tree, where I have over-planted Solomon's Seal, Astilbe, and Creeping Woodruff (each one is pictured and described in this book) along with various bulbs and shade loving bushes such as Nandina and Skimmia, and I can testify that over-planting works well. Next year, I am going to try Tiarella Cordifolia (Foamflower) under the Foster Holly at the back of my yard. Taylor's book suggests about a dozen companion plants that will grow with the foam-flower including Bleeding Hearts which I love, and which are beautiful with white tulips.
Fantastic Reference for the Perennial Gardener.......2002-03-23
This is an excellent, encyclopedic reference guide, whether you are trying to identify existing plantings or add perennials to your garden. There is a section with lots of backround gardening information; soil preparation, feeding, watering and etc. The really useful part is the plant guide.
There is a long section with color photographs of hundreds of flowering perennials. This is followed by a comprehensive descriptive guide to the plants, arranged alphabetically by Latin family name. A general description is followed by specific growing tips and varietal descriptions. All the photographs and descriptions are cross-referenced by page number so it is easy to go from a picture to a description or vice-versa. A comprehensive index further adds to the book's ease of use.
If you are dreaming of, or caring for, a perennial garden, this book is indispensable. As it points out, there are tens of thousands of perennials, most of which are not specifically addressed, but basic traits and cultivation methods are shared by thousands of varieties within each genus. This book will guide you to a successful planting plan for your climate.
Great for the Perennials Beginner.......2001-08-04
Ran across this while browsing in our local bookstore. Not a technical book, but who cares when you're having fun. The photos are fabulous, about 400 of them; not drawings, but photos. Some wildflowers too: bloodroot, cardinal flower, trillium, wild columbine, etc. I found I had about 50 of the 400 shown, and the pictures convinced me I wanted more.
It didn't bother me a bit that the photos were grouped together. In fact, in identifying my own plants, it helped. I haven't bothered much so far with the book's text portion. And I discovered through the book that it "ain't just annuals" that give color and texture to a garden.

Taylor's Guide to perenials.......2000-06-06
I am very new to gardening and found this book very helpful. It is cut and dry! The plants are listed in alphabetical order explaining where to plant them and how to care for them. It also describes when and if to trim them back and if dead heading is needed. I also enjoyed how one section of the book organized plants based on color.
A Must Have for Gardeners.......2000-05-13
I have many helpful gardening books but this one is the one I always come back to. It's best for identitifying plants or finding the perfect plant for certain conditions. Great photos and lots of them!
The most complete color encyclopedia of periennials!.......1999-08-12
This book is arranged like a bird-identifier book-- color plates in the front arranged by flower color with plant details referenced in the back of the book. The color plates are clear, good color quality, and provide close-ups of the flowers. Pen and ink drawings of plant profiles, leaf structures, and distinguishing features enhance the books ability to help the reader identify "what plant is this?" If you're looking for detailed growing conditions or a "how to", get another book. But if you're looking for a thorough, easy-to-carry-to- the-localgarden-nursery book, to identify plants and the flowers they will yield then this book is for you! I have tons of books on periennals, but this is the one that never fails me when I need to ID a plant or flower.

At the height of his career, Richard Pryor did something no other comedian had done up to that point: he took listeners deeply into his life, baring himself before audiences as he exposed his foibles and his follies, his tumultuous dealings with women and his misadventures with drugs. "People can't always handle it," he writes in Pryor Convictions. "But I knew that if you tell the truth, it's going to be funny." The pain and truth came from Pryor's earliest years--from his childhood in Peoria, Illinois, where he was raised in bars and whorehouses, and sexually assaulted by an older boy when he was just 6 years old. After a stint in the army, Pryor set out to become an entertainer and began making the slow climb from hole-in-the-wall nightclubs to stardom. Sometimes profane, but always funny, Pryor Convictions is a no-holds-barred autobiography told in Pryor's inimitable comic voice.
Book Description
Richard Pryor's life story is one of the most controversial and shocking of any performer in American history. Raised in the bars and whorehouses of Peoria, where he gained first-hand knowledge of racism and hypocrisy, he toiled for years as a bland Cosby clone before finding his true voice as one of America's most brilliant comedians and one of its most profound, and profane, social critics. At the apex of his career one of Hollywood's biggest stars, and one of the most influential black men in the world it all came tumbling down in a maelstrom of drugs, multiple marriages, heart attacks, violence, and suicide attempts, finally ending in a notorious incident where he lit himself on fire while freebasing cocaine. Pryor Convictions tells the uncensored story of the man behind the myth. Written in Pryor's own words, this human and compelling account is like the man himself: raw, funny, fearless, and completely unforgettable.
Customer Reviews:
Adequete incite from a necessary comedian.......2007-09-05
The book is immediately interesting and arresting. However, Mr. Pryor goes through lulls of semi-coherent, discractive writing. Pryor is very open with the reader in this book, describing everything he went through in fascinating candor. That alone makes this a must buy. Rich talks about selling out to mainstream Hollywood throughout his career. He did most pictures, regardless of the often atrocious scripts, admittedly, just for the money. There are also many fascinating stories about his habitual drug use and addiction(s). But this fact and the obligatory stories and excuses that follow allow the reader to realize he was a wild, carefree human being. Who was, admittedly, lucky to live as long as he did, considering the aforementioned drug abbuse.
The book is 247 pages and 30-plus chapters which makes for a quick read. You won't be emphatically pleased that you purchased this book, but you won't be upset either.
I tried..........2007-03-27
I tried to give Pryor a chance and see what makes him do what he did. I'd read his daughter's book first and he sounded like a pretty violent and mentally challenged man. I figure there are three sides of the story, so I'll read the second side. This dude blew me. He joked about beating up women like it was justifiable, had no idea it was wrong, and continuously excused his own faults. When children do it, I can blow it off as just having to grow up and understand responsibility. But how can I respect a comedian who does so many things that aren't funny? I wasn't a fan of Pryor before I read his book and now I'm definitely sticking to that opinion. I did, however, enjoy his alter ego's anecdotes.
Masterful Memoir.......2004-04-25
Using excerpts from his "Mudbone" monologues to accentuate the events of his life, Pryor puts together a collection of memories that make PC a must-read. I can only think of a few other autobiographies that even come close.
World's Most Profane and Profound Autobiography.......2003-03-02
In chapter 20 of this book Richard Pryor offhandedly calls his comedy style "profane and profound" and inadvertently sums up his life and this book perfectly. This is at various times the most dirtyminded, hilarious, shocking, or downright disturbing autobiography you may ever read, but always with his great dark humor. With a bizarre and damaging childhood in Peoria, Richard Pryor was raised in his grandmother's place of business - which happened to be a whorehouse with all of its shady and unwholesome characters. A violent and painful childhood full of profanity and prejudice came out in Richard's comedy, which was truly groundbreaking in its shocking honesty. He lived a wild life in the spotlight, with addictions and a constant parade of rough women, including five wives that he divorced six times. The wives are hard to keep track of, but Richard is always brutally honest about his attitudes toward women even if it's rarely pretty. He also has a very refreshing outlook on racial matters, as the prejudice that was so damaging failed to ruin his respect for all people of any color. Most of the tail end of the book concerns his nearly born again soul searching about his infamous addictions and latest losing battle with multiple sclerosis. In addition to Richard's straightforward and unforgiving narratives, there are very frequent asides from one of his stage characters, Mudbone, who here is acting as his even more brutally honest alter ego. This gives the book an often jarring schizophrenic character, and surely reflects the true workings of Pryor's dark genius.
More Respect than "Pryor".......2002-09-05
This has to be one of the most honest and compelling autobiographies I ever read! I have an immense amount of respect for the intimate details that Rich felt comfortable with sharing with readers about his early life and personal problems. Though some parts dealt with painful issues, the comedic genius he is, he manages to have readers smiling through tears. I found it particularly painful to read his battle with MS, which I watched my mother suffer with, but again, the humor is always there. Richard Pryor is the epitomy of a survivor, not to mention one of the most talented comedians of our time. This was a very inspirational and enjoyable read and I recommend the purchase A.S.A.P.
Customer Reviews:
