Book Description
This volume examines the extent to which the design and function of terrestrial and aquatic animals are determined by the physicochemical properties of the media in which they live. The topic is addressed from the viewpoint of scientists representing a variety of disciplines and approaches. Anatomists, biochemists, biophysicists, physiologists and zoologists each contribute their perspectives. The general topics examined include: respiration; acid base balance; osmoregulation; water and ionic exchanges; nutrient acquisition and absorption; nitrogen and sulfur metabolism; locomotion; sensory information and behavior; energy metabolism; and temperature and evolution. Four or five papers deal with each of these general topics.
Book Description
The compelling story of a single season in the world's finest amateur baseball league.
Every summer, in ten small towns across Cape Cod, young college baseball players showcase their talents in hopes of making it to the "show." A vicious filter, the league has produced one out of every six major league players, from Nomar Garciaparra and Todd Helton to Jeff Bagwell and Barry Zito.
In this brilliantly crafted narrative, Jim Collins chronicles a season in the life of the Chatham A's, perhaps the most celebrated team in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Set against a seemingly bucolic backdrop--a well-heeled resort town on the bend of the outer Cape--the story charts the changing fortunes of a handful of players, all of whom battle slumps and self-doubt in an effort to impress major league scouts and make the playoffs. Several players go home with career-threatening injuries; one blue-chip prospect fulfills great expectations while another is dubbed "the biggest disappointment on the Cape." A pitcher hides an arm injury while negotiating a minor league contract; another leaves early to tend to his dying father. And nearly all look to the following year's major league draft as a barometer of their worth. Far more than a baseball book, The Last Best League is an engrossing story about dreams fulfilled and dreams destroyed, about Cape Cod and the rites of summer, about coming of age in America.
Customer Reviews:
This IS Baseball.......2007-08-22
Collins gets it. Baseball people have a certain way about them, and Collins obviously is one of them; he also knows how to write about them. This book--an in-depth and endearing look at the 2002 Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League--shines with the polish of good baseball writing about a great baseball subject. The players and team staff come to life, as does the ebb and flow of a summer on the cape. The poignancy of this moment in time, in these specific lives and in this specific baseball season, got me a little misty-eyed at the end. These are the kinds of dreams everyone should have, at least once in awhile, even when they have to come to an end.
This is such a big part of why I love baseball.
Great Book.......2007-07-27
This is a terrific book for any fan of baseball. The book discusses three main characters in how they came to baseball how they played growing up and in college and then how the fare in the Cape League. I've passed the book on to several others who have loved it as well. A must for any baseball fan.
From College to the Big Leagues.......2006-10-20
This book offers excellent insight into what collegiate players will do to make it to the big leagues. The glimpses of small town fans are also interesting. The reader is exposed to a part of baseball few know much about. Informative and fun to read.
Only complaint - Needed pictures!.......2006-08-24
If you like decent writing and/or, you are a baseball fan, just read it. I thought about the book long after I had finished reading it.
A classic for America's Pastime........2006-07-24
Simply; the finest sports related book I've ever read, and one of the finest non-fiction books I've ever read. An in-depth perspective to the best amatuer baseball league. It is easy to not think of many of today's pro atheletes as real people with their own backgrounds. Their plastered on the screen, and we are only able to relate to them with the stats that they produce and the often poor behavior they exhibit. This book helps break those barriers by telling the story of many individuals on the Chatham A's, the most prolific of the Cape Cod League teams. All the players are interesting, but the most is the Head Coach. Extremely well written, I highly recommend it to anyone.

Why are we here?.......2006-12-04
The last chapter of this book, which I read over 30 years ago, and still remember to this day, is a true stunner, especially the last sentence. The truth therein is timeless. When I finished it, I remained seated and awestruck for a long time, contemplating a cosmic truth which has never left me to this very day. The specific memory is carved in stone, so to speak.
Ever heard of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Pirsig? Well, POHC goes even further - towards a mathematical truth about our very existence. This book is far more than its title suggests. Quite simply it is the second most important book I've EVER read... and Pirsig's is not the first, either.
If you have the intelligence to absorb it, this book will probably change the very foundation of what you call "me"... it will fundamentally challenge your mind. Read it if you have confidence in your OWN intellect.
BTW - for a reference point, I was the only student in my class at Western Michigan University who apparently understood the implications of this book. It was a 400 level Communications course with 28 students, and the course was "built" around the book.
Still best of its kind?.......2006-10-31
That human relationships are something mysterious and intriguing is hardly a question. But whether an account of them that is limited by scientific standards can do justice to their complexity and nature is quite another. However, I'm convinced that in this case the subject not only survives the operation - the methodology and presentation don't kill their subject or explain it away - but benefits from it to a rather surprising extent. That is, it achieves the difficult task of being both accurate and rigourous on the one hand and sheading light on the parts of us that have to do with us being human on the other - the thoughts and feelings in our behaviour. This is not only in stark contrast to the behaviorist paradigm dominant at the time this work was written, but marks an equally important departure from the intrapsychic focus of psychoanalysis. Thus the introduction of models based on cybernetic principles, systems theory, game theory, mathematics etc allowed for a completely new dimension in human relations to appear.
The new approaches that made it possible and which found so excellent synthesis in "Pragmatics.." are to a considerable extent traceable back to the works of Gregory Bateson. Indeed, it wasn't untill reading his "Steps to the Ecology of Mind" that I came to realize this. However, the relative lack of originality is compensated by the degree of integration and condensation achieved in "Pragmatics" - perhaps higher than any other single writing in "the Palo Alto framework" before or after has (intended) - which naturally exceeds that of "Steps..." - which is a collection of Bateson's articles dating from 1930s to 1970s. So above anything else, the two make an excellent complementary reading.
One of the best book on communication.......2005-04-22
A very intresting book. After I have got this book, I acquired all the other books by the author and found that this book is probably his best one. A must read for those who are interested in knowing the interactions between communication and paradoxical psychotherapy.
A great bridge between psychology and mathematic.......2004-08-03
I bought the book wanting to know something more about the world of communication and was delighted to find references to my youth interests: logics and mathematic and to my more recent one: spirituality. What was of a particular interest, even if it might be considered a bit partial, was the importance the authors put on paradoxes both as the root for patology and cure. In this latter respect references are given to zen sayings and their relationships to actual therapeuthical episodes.
A problem stemming for the emphasis put on the interrelated cause of neurosis is that individuals tend to be quite neglected: so giving the feeling that people having no stable relationships with other people must be either totally healty or... incurable.
Already bought two other books from the same author.
A surprising great, readable, and useful academic work.......2004-03-01
This book has the trappings of a typical academic, scholarly work, with ten zillion references and each chapter broken down into sections (1.1, 1.2, etc.) discussing a specific topic in each section. By section 1.2 (not far into the book!), I was becoming put off, because the author launched into a discussing of "the mathematical concept of functions." As I "sat through" this explanation, I was wondering "why the hell am I reading about mathematical function in a book titled the Pragmatics of Communication." Still, I stuck with it, and later in the book, the author tied everything together. I stuck with it because the book is so readable, and the points the author makes are so eye-opening, that I truly enjoyed reading it. I suspect you will, to, regardless of the level of your interest in academic or scholarly works! One thing about a great book - you get an appetite for more! Unfortunately, based on other reviewers comments, other Watzlawick works do not rise to the level shown here, so if you have to chose one, chose this one!

Success with Cichlids from Lake Malawi .......2006-12-25
This book has some good photos and provides a light overview for people that are new to the hobby. However, if you are new to aquariums you should not try to care for these fish. For anyone experienced this book doesn't provide much useful information. I was trying to get information on breeding African Cichlids and this book provided no useful information that subject.
Beautiful Pictures!.......2006-06-20
I just want to leave a notation for all who get this book. BE CAREFUL OPENING PAGES! The photos on each page are actually on photographic paper! This makes each photo excellent in detail and color, but this book needs to have pages turned with the care of a photo album, and not the casual nature of a book.
Excellent book for new african cichlidists!.......2003-05-15
Despite all the other bad reviews I think this is a great book to dive into African Cichlids. I have owned an aquarium maintenance service for years and have had only one african cichild tank. I bought a bunch of them and threw them all in a 55 gallon tank. It looked great until the fish grew up. After a year or so I only had a couple fish left, most killed by a large pseudotrophus sp. This book explained why and I was finally able to understand these fish. The book goes into species compatibility and their social behavior and explains why you mix certain species, male/female ratios, numbers of each species required, size of tank and how to keep aggressive ones. I feel the topic is so vast with over 1500 species that no one book can cover everything. I'm finding the most difficult part of African Cichlids is the scientific names - some are very difficult to say much less knowing which ones you can house together! If you have had aquariums in the past and know nothing about African Cichlids I would recommend this as your first book! It really informs the reader of the broad overview of what you are getting into and the problems associated with it. It leaves you informed and, if interested, wanting to buy another book or two, specifically one with photos of all the species like Pablo Tepoot's "Pictoral Guide".
Not Much Success With CICHLIDS !.......2002-11-17
More time is spent on discussing basic aquarium set-up and care, than on Malawi Cichlids. Must have had commercial sponsers, they are mentioned throughout. Other than a beginner at cichlids, nothing much new to be learned. Scientific names are outdated, but in the fast changing world of Malawi Cichlids that's not surprising. Better be up on your metric system, there's not an inch, foot, yard, pound or gallon in the book!
A moment from our sponsor(s).......2001-09-10
I felt as though I was reading an info mercial. While it is nice to have info on product availability it was more than I wanted to sort through. I also found it not well organized. Cichlid identification for the purpose of appropriate care and breeding is daunting enough without adding more confusion.

A Pendelfin bible no collector should be without !.......1999-01-22
A history book,a guide book,a reference book and price guide what more could a collector want in a book! I continually refer to mine and never tire of reading it. I can honestly say it was money well spent and can't wait for the next edition.
Just what I was looking for! Wonderful!.......1998-08-24
I could not have expected more. This book not only gives you color pictures of all the Rabbits it gives background and market values I have also been able to learn alot of the history and tales behind some of my favorites. I will also be looking forward to the next book
Absolutely brilliant!! - A real help for collectors........1998-04-21
Thank you for producing such a wonderful book. It has been by far the best and most helpful book on Pendelfin.
It will certainly make it a lot easier to collect the more rarer rabbits as I now know what to look for.
It might be nice to have a folder or something similar to store records of rabbits bought and the value - that way you can just add updates when rabbits are introduced rather than having some information stored in Issue 1 and the rest in Issue 2.
I can't wait for issue 2!!!
Book Description
Annuals are experiencing a resurgence as today's gardeners demand a wider variety of options. No longer confined to monotone bedding plants, dozens of "unusual" annuals are now available at garden centers in colors and forms far removed from the classic annual bed of pink petunias or red geraniums.
In the tradition of his classic Herbaceous Perennial Plants, Allan M. Armitage has compiled descriptions and assessments of 245 genera of true annuals as well as plants that behave like annuals in USDA zones 1–7. Focusing on identifying the plants, successful culture, and their primary garden attributes, Armitage discusses 279 species in detail and summarizes the distinguishing features of hundreds of cultivars, many of which he has tested himself. Classics like begonias and pelargoniums are juxtaposed with newcomers from Australia, and all are subject to Armitage's critical eye. Color photos and line drawings illustrate the text, and he suggests additional reading in books, articles, and Web sites for many of the covered genera.
Armitage bases his descriptions on extensive personal experience. His frank and conversational style keeps potentially dry details fresh, and each entry is liberally sprinkled with strong and sometimes amusing opinions. Useful lists in the appendix are further evidence of his expertise, as he compiles biennials, half-hardy perennials, winter annuals, shade-tolerant plants, fragrant plants, climbing plants, and everlastings. These lists extend the volume's application beyond a necessary tool for horticulturists and nurserymen to a practical guide for the dedicated home gardener.
Customer Reviews:
Which is it? Annual, Perennial or Biennial.......2007-02-09
Excellent book in so many ways, but not every entry indicated what the plant type was--annual, biennial, or half-hardy perennial. Consequently, it was not as useful to me in doing a presentation on annuals!
Great book - lots of good information.......2007-01-03
My son used this book for his class Herbaceous Landscapes at University of Delaware. He is so turned on by the information in this book. There are great reference pictures and even though the class has ended, he refers to the book quite often. Found it to be very useful!
It doesn't get any better than a reference book by Allan Armitage.......2006-08-30
Armitage is #1 when it comes to bedding and garden plants, and this book shows it. His manual is a top-notch resource and includes his own personal insights into each plant. Unlike other references that are boring and dry, Armitage makes the material spring to life!
The line drawings in this book are spectacular as well, and the middle of the book includes several pages of full-color photographs. Very professional and highly recommended.

Book Description
Hundreds of thousands of Jews fought in the Eastern European battlefields of World War II, yet their story has rarely been told. Songa was one of these Jews, serving in StalinÂ's armies for five long years, fighting a war of Communism against Hitler's Fascism. When it was over, Songa had little more than his life as an army officer: his home village had been destroyed, his family murdered, his allegiance to a ruthless dictator coerced through imprisonment, and his sense of purpose in the world unclear.
Chronicling the life of Leon Ajces, known always as "Songa," Natalie Green Giles unfolds the story of one man's journey through extraordinary times. It is a story that takes us from the quiet grain fields of Songa's idyllic childhood in a "shtetl," or Jewish village in Ukraine, through Soviet and Nazi occupation, the bloodiest battles of World War II, postwar rebuilding, and the oppressive expansion of Communism across Eastern Europe. It is a story with an unlikely ending, in America, where Songa is allowed to transform himselfÂfrom a Soviet military intelligence officer, to a loyal patriot, and an enormously successful businessman in his adopted country.
Customer Reviews:
a larger-than-life biography.......2004-09-20
SONGA'S STORY starts out in a once-upon-a-time that no longer exists: the interwar years, where the first born son of a close-knit family, dwelling in Ozeryany, in the breadbasket of Europe, along the Polish/Ukraine border. Even though anti-Semitism has been rife for hundreds of years, an uneasy social peace has developed within strictly adhered to communities - shtetls. Here, in 1939, when the alliance between Soviet Russia & Hitler's Germany is broken & the Nazi army invades Poland, this country boy, with a keen mind for history & commerce, must choose to flee or fight.
Leon chooses to fight, & leaves his little country town & his beloved family on a train headed to a Red Army training camp. He will only meet five years later, one other relative who survived the Ozeryany massacre.
Far from being a Communist, Leon has a cosmopolitan flair, speaks five languages (none of them English), has studied at university & started his own business. Now he must learn the military ropes to survive on the Front against the Germans, eventually being sent in 1942, to the siege of Stalingrad. Afterwards, as one of the last officers standing, the dreaded NKVD secret police accuse him of being a Nazi spy & send him to a gulag in Uzbekistan. When he does not confess after months of torture, they set him free. With his village still held by the Germans, Leon returns to his army unit & continues to force the invaders out of his homeland, only to stumble upon the unimaginable horror of a Majdanek, a Jewish death camp in his beloved homeland. & then his orders are to take Berlin.
After the war, now in the Polish army, he is part of the reconstruction of that war-torn land & works in the confused world of Displaced Persons. From there, the idea grows of breaking through the Iron Curtain to the New World where his only remaining relatives are thriving. As a high ranking Red Army officer with a chestful of medals, Leon Ajces is far from the poor & helpless masses America so enjoys embracing. & as the Cold War is heating up, Songa's only way to make a new life, is to juggle an attache's visa & once on American soil, defect.
Could not put it down! Rebeccasreads highly recommends SONGA'S STORY as a slice of history you'll never hear about in text books: it tells of a time few of us now remember, & is therefore, all the more vital to our collective story.
History Comes Alive!.......2004-06-19
This book brings the historical features of the mid-20th century alive with a compelling personal story of one talented and driven man. Songa's story is the story of one man's survival and opportunism in a disturbed and fractured WWII world. His is the story of many imigrants who arrived in the United States in the Twentieth Century. The book describes his unique abilities and frank good fortune, along with a compelling love story that breathes life into the story.
Rich with detail, this book is difficult to put down. Not unlike "Schindler's List," Green Giles' book illustrates that inborn skill, quick wits, and plain luck were essential for the survival of Jews in Europe during the Second World War. Songa crosses paths with famous American figures from the post-war period that make it easy for the non-historian to keep his life oriented with respect to the events of the day.
This would make an excellent text to read in combination with "The Diary of Ann Frank."
An excellent read by freshman author Natalie Green Giles.
For the ages..........2003-09-22
Just when you thought you had heard many or all of the sagas of Jews in WW II, here is yet another and a great one at that. So unbelievable that it could only be non-fiction. From one unbelievable event to the next, Songa manages to survive and thrive in 3 continents. Read it and enjoy.
What a story!.......2003-08-17
Fasten your seat belts and get prepared for a quick read that will take you from a small village in Poland, through World War II, a defection to the United States, and a rise to business success in just over 150 pages.
Once I started reading the book, it was impossible to put down, and two days later I found myself thirsting to learn even more about Leon Ajces, his home town, his incredible story of survival during the war, and his leadership of Imperial News Company. The photos of his family and friends were a frequent reminder that this story is actually real!
Perhaps Natalie will give us a sequel that tells us even more about this incredible man and his equally incredibly story? Better yet, how about a movie?
