Any book calling itself The Ultimate Baseball Book has a lot to live up to. But when Ken Burns tags it "the Cadillac of baseball books," the authors have obviously succeeded. The book is divided up into innings, one per decade. Each inning contains a historical overview of the decade, followed by an essay written by baseball's literati: Robert W. Creamer on "The Old Orioles" in the first inning (1876-1900), Roy Blount, Jr. on "How DiMaggio Made It Look Easy" in the fifth (1930-1939), George F. Will on "Chicago the Unmitigated" in the extra inning (1981-1990). Fun to read and full of anecdotes, one-liners, and hundreds of black-and-white photos, The Ultimate Baseball Book is a must-have for all baseball fans. Though oversize (9 by 12 inches), it's better suited to a bedside table than a coffee table--you'll want to take the time to read it, rather than just flip through and look at the pictures. Highly recommended. --M. Stein
Book Description
THE ULTIMATE BASEBALL BOOK has more than lived up to its name. Spanning the complete history of the sport from the fledgling leagues in the late 1870s to the powerhouses of the 1990s and revealing in the process what a remarkable effect baseball has had on our collective experience, this is THE book for any and all baseball fans, certain to grace coffee and bedside tables alike. Designed with that wonderful nostalgia that the sport itself so often evokes, THE ULTIMATE BASEBALL BOOK combines timeless images with a sweeping narrative history as well as essays on various idols and icons by such heavy hitters as Red Smith, Wilfrid Sheed, Roy Blount, Jr., Tom Wicker, and Geoge Will. This new edition covers baseball through the nineties, the decade when home run records fell and the sport reclaimed its hold on America, and celebrates the national game in ultimate style.
Customer Reviews:
marvelous.......2007-09-21
If you're interested in the history of baseball, I think you will enjoy this book no matter what your level of expertise on the subject. I agree with the previous reviewer's comment about it being the best of its breed. They say Ken Burns called this "the Cadillac of baseball books," and you can certainly see the influence it must've had on his Baseball film-series. It's a nice fat book, at over 400 pages, and there are plenty of historical photos and illustrations included on practically every page, making it truly a browser's delight. With the expansive scope, covering 1876-1999, those who range from really serious to fanatical about baseball history may be left wanting more in terms of depth and description of many topics. Nevertheless, I found the level of detail impressive and I believe that almost anyone with an interest in the game will really enjoy this excellent book.
Still Best of Breed.......2000-04-14
I read the first edition of this book, I guess more than 20 years ago now. I was dazzled immediately, in the very first inning, by both the prose and the great photos. The most amazing thing (to me anyway)is Nemec's historical report. Somehow even though he's writing the more recent chapters more than 10 years apart you'd never know it. You'd think of him as a 19th century guy from what else he's written, but his 1990's chapter flows with the same spark and flavor as his first chapter on the early years written way back when. Most of the other pieces hold up very well too, especially the one on DiMaggio and Richter's look at Montreal baseball before the Expos. Let's all hope this crew is still around in another decade to do another update.

Funny, Inspiring, Energizing, and Smart!.......2007-03-15
God, I love this book. It is incredible. I've written a dozen published books and I still find it invaluable. Whenever I'm feeling stumped or blocked, I open my well-worn copy almost at random, and come away with some nugget that gets me where I'm going. In the nicest, friendliest, funniest ways, Masello is imploring us to be better writers. I have a shelf packed with books on writing, but this is the one I return to most often. I'd give it more stars if that were an option.
SCRAMBLED FORMAT.......2006-11-25
Robert's Rules of Writing, by Robert Masello is one of my favorites. Much like Leonard Bishop's Dare to be a Great Writer, this is a collection of writing tips presented in no particular order. Because of the format, I wouldn't recommend either as the first "how-to" book for a novice. But the scrambled format works well for me when I'm looking for a quick read during TV commercials. Many of the ideas offer practical help; others provide thought-provoking insight. You don't have to agree with every "rule" to enjoy this one.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!.......2006-09-08
I reread this book constantly, it is just so helpful! and by the way the person who reviewed the book with only one star calling it unconventional...IT HAS UNCONVENTIONAL RIGHT IN THE TITLE!!!!
The BEST book on writing I have on my shelf!.......2006-01-04
At first glance I liked the book. Short, entertaining chapters that make you re-think your thinking about writing. I actually found I felt comforted by the 'rules' since I seem to be following most of them. With over 50 articles published on the web, greeting card verse sales and several articles in local magazines, my bank account tells me I'm doing something right, but I'm in a constant state of "I could have done better." Rule #69: Grumble and Fuss, made me laugh at myself. With all of Robert's rules, education and experience, he's still a guy who speaks to the uncertain beginning writer in all of us.
MAKE ROOM ON YOUR BOOKSHELF FOR THIS ONE.......2005-09-24
This delivers on the 3 Es of teaching: it educates, entertains and enlightens. For anyone thinking of becoming a writer, as well as for anyone already in the writing game.

Inadequate details.......2003-10-26
This book is a reproduction of the 1907 book "Costumes of All Nations" (3rd edition), which in turn was reproduced from a series of plates produced by Braun and Schneider in "Zur Geschichte der Kostume" between 1861 and 1890. Unfortunately, in the process, all of the text (both the German and English) was removed (as was the color). So we have no way of knowing what went along with these drawings.
Furthermore, there are no references of any kind, so you can't go back to the "original" painting, or source to verify the information. It may be helpful for getting ideas, but not for any serious costume design.
No-no-no-no!.......2002-11-25
If you are interested in the proper history of costume, this book is not for you. It was created in the 19th century, when costume history was at its beginning and it reflects all major faults of the researchers of that time. Many things, claimed to be true at that time, are now proven to be completely wrong. Personally, I have found some blunders in this book. So, if you want to do a thorough and accurate research for your costume, refer to the modern researchers, authentic paintings and manuscripts. Definitely not this book. It is like using 14th century manuscripts for studying modern English.
But if you want to compare the work of modern and Victorian authors - go ahead, this is a wonderful example.
This book can also be quite suitable for those, who are interested in theatrical costume, where looks come first and authenticity does not matter.
Useful for its type.......2001-10-03
If you're a serious student of costume history, this book is not for you. But if you're a beginning re-enactor, or you work with them, it's an excellent source for getting the "feel" of a period. It is typically Victorian in line, as are many similar books still in print. BUT it's comprehensive through many time periods, shows accessories well (which a lot of similar books do not), and makes for a good beginning point.
I've found it very useful in getting beginning costume students to pick a period for further research.
Not useful to those interested in costume history.......2000-10-07
This is another book of Victorian redrawings of historical garments and outright inventions and fantasies where ancient clothing is concerned. While it might be useful to theatrical costumers, Victorian recreationists, or those interested in the history of costume illustration or interpretation, it is of no use to those doing historic costuming or interested in costume history.
If you want accurate representations of historic clothing, get a book with reproductions of art from the time period of the clothes you're interested in.
Great book of Pictures.......2000-05-02
As a costumer for the high school i find it difficult to find books that are comprehensive with pictures of enough time periods to find what i am looking for. This book shows enough examples to get the styles across, unfortunately it is in black and white but it is still detailed and wonderful.

Minimal "identification".......2003-02-21
I found the title of this book totally misleading. Yes, it's compact, but it's hardly a true guide to identifying Barbies. Thank heavens it didn't cost a lot, but I'd advise you to put your money toward a more complete book.
Good for new collectors or for unknowing sellers.......2002-11-15
This book is good if you are a new collector and don't know what type or era of barbie you like this will help you figure it out. IT also gives you good tips in identifying barbie dolls. The id info for the ponytails is good, but it could be better and it lacks all info on #6. When I saw this I just stopped reading. But if you don't know what you want to collect or you want to id your childhood doll this is the way to go.
Obsessive.......2002-04-28
If you are truly obsessed w/ Babs this is a great book to add to the collection. I have not read through it yet, I can't get past gazing at all of the fantastic pictures, and great outfits!
Small.......2000-02-26
Needs more doll pictures and information. But that would be thicker and cost more. Good for traveling to take with you to swap met.
Fantastic for finding Barbie needs.......1999-09-03
In this book I found some of the outfits that I had as a little girl and can now go to shows and try to find the same outfit without trying to describe the item...Now I can just show them the picture and see if the dealer has it...Very helpful and informitive! Must have for any collector!!
Book Description
Hardy geraniums were the first plants to shrug off the rigours of her coastal climate and grow in Birgitte Husted Bendtsen's garden every bit as well as they did in the fertile, sheltered plots further east in Denmark. Add to this their tolerance of dogs and children, resistance to pests and diseases, interesting foliage, and delightful flowers in a wide range of colours, and it is little surprise that Birgitte developed an insatiable passion for them. In this book, she shares her knowledge of cultivating the plants and highlights the most garden worthy species and varieties. Expert cultivation advice, including comments on soil preferences and hardiness, is followed by fascinating information on pollination, and failsafe propagation secrets. Captivating colour photographs display key characteristics of hardy geraniums including their legendary range of flower colour and intricate, often highly marked, foliage. Here readers may marvel at the many cultivars of Geranium x oxonianum, enjoy favorites like Geranium 'Ann Folkard' with its striking black eye against magenta background, and covet the fine-leaved, blue-flowering Geranium himalayense. Smaller varieties ideal for growing in rockeries, containers and troughs are described along with perfect geraniums for associating with roses of all colours. Birgitte Husted Bendtsen communicates like a true enthusiast and the text is peppered with interesting anecdotes including news of an exciting variety that is prized for its blue flowers and modest stature. With over 400 species and hybrids of hardy geraniums and 450 beautiful colour photographs, this book is both rich in information and beautiful to browse. It is a long-awaited reference that will delight seasoned enthusiasts and introduce a whole new generation of gardeners to the charms of the hardy geranium.
Customer Reviews:
Wow! Incredibly informative and a good read too!.......2006-04-02
In my garden planning, I keep running across stunning and adorable hardy geraniums. I got this book on a lark, and based on previous reviews, to get a little more information such as "will these actually look as nice in MY garden" and "are they as hardy as advertised"... I have read this book cover to cover since I got it a few days ago--the author is outstanding, showing a true passion for gardening and gardening using geraniums. She is entertaining and explains each of the variations/hybrids simply and thoroughly. This is the first gardening book I have read and finally "gotten" the latin names, understanding the characteristics of each of 'these' parents produces offspring having 'those' features. I know that's not a hard concept, but sorting through garden catalogs, garden stores, etc. I guess I'd get jaded and set my planning aside for a while. Birgitte explains the features of each kind of geranium and their best uses and placement (will this one work in a rock garden or only woodland settings?), as well as having a great photo of most every flower and some of their leaves to show the many variations and combinations. Many of the plants I have seen just recently on-line are included in this book, which made me pretty happy. I learned that Geranium 'Anne Folkard' may not survive a cold, damp winter unless I take extra care and shelter it a little, and G. pratense Midnight Reiter may not grow as fast as I would have liked it too to fill in the area where I wanted to place it.
After reading "Gardening with Hardy Geraniums", I am taking this book with me to the garden stores, with my slightly revised list, so if I see something else that calls out to me, I can look it up and know a heckova lot more than on the little plant tag. I wish more plant-specific books were more like this one--really interesting and informative without being just a list of plants with the same information on the plant tags.
Superb!.......2005-08-28
I already owned the well-known books on hardy geraniums by Trevor Bath / Joy Jones and Peter Yeo when this new book was published, so at first I hesitated a little before buying yet another book about this increasingly popular garden plant. I have not regretted buying it. I would't want to be without the other two books but the newcomer has a lot to offer: You will find many new cultivars that were unknown to the other authors; it's interesting to compare the experiences of someone gardening in Denmark, where climatic conditions are tougher, to those of English gardeners; there is a fascinating chapter on a leading Dutch breeder of geraniums; you'll find excellent chapters on cultivation and propagation, illustrated with useful pictures; there are 450 brilliant photographs, among them close-ups of flowers and leaves, so you can compare them handily, but also of whole plants and borders, so you get the "micro-perspective" as well as the "macro-perspective"; and, last not least, the author shows real passion when writing, very competently and wittily, about gardening with geraniums. If you are looking for a systematic and scientific monograph about cranesbills, you are better served with Peter Yeo's standard work (2nd edition), but if you are gardening and as crazy about geraniums as I am - then you can't do without this book!
A premier publisher of books for gardening and landscaping.......2005-08-07
Plenty of gardeners associate geraniums with potted plants which have a long flowering period: Gardening With Hardy Geraniums shows there's many more varieties available - over 400 in all - which are good garden cultivars. Over 400 photos cover the characteristics which distinguish them, from color to flower shape, while accompany summaries cover height, propagation, season, and background history. Avid gardeners with a passion for geraniums will relish Gardening With Hardy Geraniums as in-depth survey of geranium varieties. Timber Press is a premier publisher of books for gardening and landscaping. Send for their free catalog for a complete listing of their superb titles.
