The intermediary between Tom and those forces for life is a spirit guide called the Dark Woman, modeled after the wise woman of the Iroquois nations. From a small Massachusetts fishing town, through New Hampshire and Vermont, to the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Canada, she accompanies him on an extraordinary journey of forgiveness and reconciliation.
Having struggled against odds to recover his love for his grandfather, Tom learns that his love extends beyond his immmediate family, and leads him to the discovery of his Mohawk heritage and destiny as a spiritual healer among his people.

Book Description
In The Devil Wears Pinstripes, Jim Caple, ESPN.comÂ's Âdesignated Yankee hater, takes on the rabid fans of baseballÂ's twenty-six-time World Champions, and offers a decidedly different slant on the New York YankeesÂthe losers of thirteen World Series.
Caple delivers his send-up of the evil empire with scathing irony, laying waste to all things Yankees. A creative and unauthorized timeline pokes fun at the organizationÂ's trades, its legendary vanity, and its near-lethal stadium food. He skewers the owners, coaches and playersÂfrom the target of all targets George Steinbrenner to the pinstriped icons in the House That Ruth Built. Heroes and lesser mortals appear in all their tarnished glory, whether theyÂ're participating in a World Series shutout, in drunken brawls at strip joints, or engaging in the notorious wife-swapping incident of the 1970s.
Die-hard Yankee haters and the fans of all other baseball teams are sure to appreciate this hilariously provocative diatribe.

yankees suck.......2007-04-10
yankees suck. they alway will. this book is awsome. yankees suck. Not a baised book Cable just points out the obvious that the yankees suck
Hilarious.......2006-12-05
Caple notes early in this book that every time he trashes the Yankees, he gets e-mails calling him a Red Sox fan (which he isn't.). And below I see 1-star reviews trashing him as a bitter Red Sox fan.
Hmmm.
Anyway, this is fantastic book for Yankee haters, which included not just Red Sox fans, but this Braves' fan, Mets fans, Dodgers fans and pretty much any fan of any team other than the Pinstriped Devils. But what makes it special is there is an underlying respect and even affection for the Yankees. Caple has only good things to say about Joe Torre. He only tweaks Jeter a bit about his girlfriends. He doesn't say anything nasty about Casey Stengle. And he praises Don Mattingly. He specifically talks about how classy the current Yankee iteration is. And he notes that baseball *needs* the Yankees. When the Lakers were winning all their championships, no one cared. But the let the Yankees win and the baseball world goes berzerk.
No, his bile is reserved for deserving targets. The tightwad Joe Dimaggio, the obnoxious Reggie Jackson, the violent Billy Martin, tge greedy racist George Weiss, and -- the principle villain in this book, Steinbrenner. He castigates the Yankees for frequently treating their best people like garbage -- slashing Babe Ruth's salary, cutting Mantle's after his triple crown, benching Mattingly for his hair, refusing to integrate except for Elston Howard, alienating Yogi Berra. He hits the obnoxious bleacher fans, the depressing dump of a stadium (while praising the old one) and the nauseating media worship, as exemplified in Yankeeography. He even lashes out at Red Sox fans, cackling that if the Yankees disappeard, the Massachusettes economy would collapse from being unable to sell anti-Yankee shirts.
I actually think that Yankee fans will enjoy this book too, assuming they don't see their team through Yankeeography tinted glasses.
Anyway, this book is short fun and hilarious.
Somebody give Caple a tissue to dwy his wittle eyes.......2006-02-15
I haven't read the book, but I'm sure its funny. Reading Jim Caple's crybaby rants are always a laugh :) I encourage everyone that hates the Yankees to pick it up and laugh away.
It shall be your only salvation.
Since 1923,this game HAS AND ALWAYS WILL be dominated by THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF SPORTS.
THE NEW YORK YANKEES!!!
Laugh away at the handful of disapointments the Yankees have had over 102 years as an organization. Take joy in a few bad trades and the extremely small number of world titles that barely slipped through their fists.
And while you are taking pleasure in their painfully small number of mistakes, ALL of your teams will continue to languish in mediocrity because of poor management and cheap ownership.
Continue to hate as the Yankees stockpile world championships and collect great players that your poorly run organizations refuse to treat properly.
Laugh at Steinbrenner, George Costanza, and the 2004 ALCS. It means nothing.
The Yankees are still better than you and your "favorite" team and they ALWAYS will be.
Nobody is perfect, but the New York Yankees are as close as you can come.
For all you haters, this is for you.......2005-12-28
I've heard that this book would be enjoyable to people who aren't diehard Sox fans or Yankees haters. I wouldn't know. But as someone who is and has always been both, this book is a blast. Hilarious and hateful, just like it should be, it not only pulls no punches, it dons brass knuckles and aims for the groin. If you've ever dreamed about pushing Steinbrenner down a flight of stairs while laughing maniacally, this book is for you. If Arod's girly slap in that fateful pennant race had you rolling, this book is for you. If the name Aaron Boone still makes you physically retch, this book is for you.

Not entirely accurate.......2007-05-04
I spent two weeks in Germany on a publicity tour for my 3rd book from Parthas Verlag [...] and liked the section on spelling your name and phone calls. Didn't have enough time to do more prep. from this book, but I have to say that the book is wrong about how people answer phones. Only at businesses do they announce their names when they pick up--everyone else just says "Hallo?" That's based on hearing countless "handy" calls received in restaurants, trains and other public places.
beware of the fineprint.......2006-12-27
This book did help me learn some things and it helped me understand some other things that I didn't get before which is wht this book gets 1 star. However this book is full of mistakes like translations that I know to be wrong because I have studied some German before getting this book. When I find a bunch of mistakes it makes me wonder how many other mistakes are there that I'm not aware of so I lost my trust in this book and found a better one.
All the teach yourself books have a few mistakes here and there but this one has way too many so I would highly suggest that you find a better book than this one if you're looking to learn German, especialy for a begginer.
Great Book -- Still No Pimsleur, Though.......2006-03-14
I was shopping for German instruction books the other day at the book store and this was the first one I found. I had looked at German for Dummies as well, but wasn't as impressed. All of the other products were on CD, which I didn't bother with (unless it's one of those audio-only listening disks) since I'm more comfortable with books here. So I bought it. So far it's proving to be a great book, for the price. It's the same case with the Idiot's Guide to Spanish I bought a year back, so it looks like these people may have just earned themselves a new customer. And I say "for the price" because I tend to compare these products to Pimsleur's, which are, in my view, the best of the best in DIY language training. However, 690 dollars for their complete two box set (I wish I were kidding) seemed a little steep for me at the time, to say the least.
If you're a paratrooper flying to Berlin, this is your book........2005-08-01
Other reviewers nailed this one- If you need to become fluent in "conversational German" overnight (read: Business trip), this is the perfect book for you. For people who really want to learn the language and/or culture... at least it's cheap.
Yes, the book has errors. Yes, it has some awkward presentation (it has exercises asking you to try to speak phrases before it introduces proper pronunciation!). Yes, it's more about giving you phrases like "Where's the Taxi" and "How's my hair" over anything truly fundamental... but that's not really what this book is about.
Get this book if:
-You're vacationing in Berlin 3 months from now and you want to be able to ask when your train is leaving without looking like a typically clueless tourist.
-A great-aunt you didn't even know you were related to recently passed away and the only stipulation on her inheritance is that you must know enough German to find your way to her estate.
-Your boss just told you that Hans from the Berlin office wants to talk to you- now.
Don't get this book if:
-You just found out your future mother-in-law is a German immigrant and you need to speak picture-perfect German to impress her.
-You plan on moving to or living in Germany for an extended period.
-...or if you have the time to "do things right".
If you need to learn German, and you need to learn it NOW, this is probably the best book I've ever seen for that purpose. If you're looking at a longer time frame or a situation where precision matters more than simply how fast you can assimilate the language, then you should at least pick up some supplements to help weed out where the errors are.
...and hey, it's a reasonably cheap book with a pretty reliable "cheat card" of phrases just behind the front cover. It's hard to argue with that.
Decent book for beginners.......2005-05-01
I bought this book during my second year of studying German, and it was pretty useful as far as beginner's grammar goes, but as far as vocabulary, don't expect much. It is more a book for people who plan to go to Germany than anything else. I'm not sure about the 3rd edition, I have the 2nd edition, but there were often times when I even found mistakes and the pronounciation key, even though I didn't need it, tends to throw you off from the actual pronounciation. Some more helpful guides would be Themen Neu workbooks for English/French/... speakers. I found those while I was an exchange student in Berlin and they helped me a lot to build useful vocabulary and help out with my weak areas.

Great book for the koi keeper.......2007-05-26
This is one of the best books that I have found on Koi. Beautiful color
photographs abound in this informative book. If you have to have only one book on Koi-this is the one. Lot of good advice on building a pond, what to do if there are problems such as illness, identifying fish pathogens and their treatment, different kinds of koi. I especially like the pictures of other people's ponds and landscaping-full of good ideas.
Good book-- but BE CAREFUL!.......2003-06-21
I lost half of my Koi in the space of 6 hours, because I was counting on this book, and it does not even mention the catastrophic disaster known as PH Crash. Unless you find out about that, and take preventative measures, this WILL happen to you!!
This book fails to describe water chemistry in sufficient detail, and these days it's pretty outdated. However, it does have a fantastic photo catalogue of koi varieties, and a decent overview of health problems, pond construction, and seasonal care. If you have fish, make sure to get multiple books in case one is missing important information.
This is the book.......2002-02-07
I have kept koi and bred them for around 5 years now. And when I pick up a koi book this always seems to be the first one I go to. As far as I'm concerned, if I had only one koi book this would be the one. If you're about to get into koi don't do it without the Tetra Encyclopedia of Koi.
All books should have such a high standard - kudos to tetra.......2000-09-20
Amazing. The only problem I had with this book is getting it out of my wife's hands. It covers EVERYTHING. Sections on Filtration, Pond design, Feeding (listing alternative foods that Koi enjoy), Anatomy (first rate), Selecting & showing your koi, a detail listing on the different patterns and scale formation and probably the best ( in my opinion) Parasites and Diseases, what they are, were they come from and how to destroy them.
This could be and should be renamed to "The koi instruction manual". If you are a koi breeders, I highly recommend this book, after reading it, I would wager that it would be THE book to recommend to your customers. The reason being that they would have less problems and get better enjoyment out of their hobby. It truly would be hard to go wrong with this book.
Wonderful & Enjoyable.......2000-01-26
This book is as easy to read as any grade school book and as indepth as books which I have read that cost 5 times as much. I have enjoyed reading it so much that the day after I was done reading it, I started reading it again. I own a nursery for watergardening plants, fish and supplies, and I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2006-07-13
In a world where most hydroponics books talk about the exotic ways to grow things, this book covers a basic approach which would seem to insure success. I don't know about others but it helped me find and correct several misconceptions and problems that I have been experiencing with my hobby level hydro growing (excessive watering, inapropriate nutrient levels, etc.) Overall, a good text for beginning or hobby level hydroponic growing.
Out of date information.......2005-10-21
I purchased this book because it had supposedly been "Completely Revised and Updated" in 2005. That is rather hard to believe as most of the methods discussed are no longer appropriate. Also the copyright says 1992. However the book does have its high points. The section on selecting and growing herbs is outstanding. Also included is very good info on which herbs to use with certain foods along with recipes from professional chefs. Using hydroponic systems outdoors is also covered. I would recommend this book as an addition to a collection of hydroponic books. If you only buy one book there are many other better ones such as "How-To Hydroponics" by Keith Roberto. "Hobby Hydroponics" by Howard M. Resh would be another great choce. All in all anyone would probably learn something new from this or any other hydroponic book that would justify the price.
Gardening By Numbers ý With Missing Numbers.......2003-07-01
I borrowed this book from the library, learned many useful things from it, but also found it maddeningly sketchy and incomplete. Thinking that a new edition would improve things, I ordered this one, but there is very little difference between versions.
A short, introductory text for beginners can get away with describing "how-to" while going light on "why-to," but only if the instructions are error-free and complete. The authors would have been better to leave out the extensive sections on history and commercial methods and concentrate purely on simple systems suitable for the home. They could also have explained a little more why things are done the way they are.
For example: many pages are devoted to the description of methods for circulating nutrient solution, either by hand or automatically. Why nutrients are circulated is barely mentioned. The reader is left wondering why a constant flow of the same nutrient solution is better than just leaving the solution where it is. (Answer: for the same reason that blood circulates.)
So, a maddening book, but still a useful one. I used it to design some cedar window-boxes, fed by inverted 2-litre soda bottles that look like enormous IVs.
After modifying my design to account for the authors' nearly-fatal omission that their choice of growing medium, perlite, is actually lighter than water (!), the tomatoes and herbs exploding out of my boxes now block the sun, and the neighbours are jealous of my IV-covered walls.
Excelent for beginner.......2000-04-17
The book is very good at giving the basics of getting started into the world of soilless plant growth. The book is very easy to read and also gives formulas for producing your own nutrient solutions. I think this is an excellent starter book and it will have you looking for more information.

Book Description
Fifteenth-Century Carthusian Reform argues that monastic theology offers a medieval Catholic paradigm distinct from the scholastic theology that has been the conventional source for medieval-oriented interpretations of Renaissance and Reformation. It is based on thorough study of the manuscript record. Nicholas Kempf (ca. 1415-1497) taught at the University of Vienna before becoming the head of Carthusian monasteries in rural Austria and Slovenia. Faced with calls for reform in church and society, he placed his confidence in the patristic Christian idea of reform: the reform of the image of God in the human person. This contemplative monastic idea of reform depended on authoritative structures, especially the monastic rule and rational -- yet divinely inspired -- discernment by a spiritual director. What seemed like simpleminded submission to monastic structures was actually a way to avoid relying on human effort for salvation. By returning to one's true self (the image of God), one opened oneself up for genuine social relationships. To activist reformers, whether adherents of medieval scholasticism, Renaissance humanism, or modern Enlightenment, this monastic idea of reform has seemed escapist, backward-looking, and "womanish." Monks accepted these labels but read them as signs of hidden strength. This book attempts to read through monastic lenses.

Book Description
Memoirs of an OREO: A Social History explores—through the eyes and experience of the author—the meaning of this label, “OREO,” and its correlation to the mood and vitality of social change in the U.S. during most of the 20th century.
This story, however, is not a lament. It is a very unique and illuminating story personal story linked to a steadily evolving social climate as the author grew up in the family of a Methodist Minister, experienced World War II both in Europe and in the Pacific, and led a professional life as an educator and counselor. In an entertaining way these memoirs portray his upbringing, which was protective and shielding and at the same time enriching with regard to influences of the dominant culture. And it tells how his life experiences gave him diverse perspectives and insights—which were sometimes at odds with the black mainstream—on social, political, economic, racial and cultural relationships. His profound associations with Black and multiracial church congregations, for example, made him sensitive to the strengths and weaknesses of both – and aware of their contributions to the best and the worst of society’s conditions. Through his intriguing stories and delightful anecdotes he examines the idiosyncratic needs of individuals and groups as they create and/or resist social change.
He writes, “As I explore the causes and effects of racism in this way, this story, Memoirs of an OREO: A Social History, will hopefully be a very positive message for every reader. My purpose is to assure the probability that the unparalleled power and wealth of our society will be shared for the benefit of everyone.”

This book was very entertaining and very easy reading. Since I am from the Pittsburgh Area, I know a lot of places Mr. Polk writes about. I hope Mr. Polk will put out more just like this one. Great Job!
