The book is exactly as the title states. It explains the philosophy, history, and rules of Kendo. It also has illustrations for the techniques so you can learn them. You still need to study Kendo in person to learn it, but this book is good as a reference book in case you haven't practiced something in awhile. It also has the terminology, which is useful to know as a student.

Dr. Tokeshi's book is great. It covers everything from the philosophy and history behind kendo to waza (techniques) and the basics of equipment care. Not to mention the comprehensive section on nitto ryu and the Nihon Kendo Kata. Using Dr. Tokeshi's book I've learned to take apart and maintain my shinai and how to fold my keikogi and hakama. I especially like the sections where he explains the reasons behind the different kamae and what the different kata is supposed to teach you.

Succinct guide to the art of Kendo........2004-01-01

Jinichi Tokeshi provides a succinct albeit comprehensive guide to Kendo and all that is entails. It begins with a short history of Kendo in an effort to familiarize the reader with the origins of the "sport". Tokeshi then spends some time on the necessities such as equipment and the correct manner in which to wear the kendogi and bogu! He also pays strict attention to appropriate etiquette and behaviour. The book deals with the movements, strikes, general philosophy, rules, regulations and ends with short biographies on historically significant samurai/Kendo masters! All in all the book amicably demonstrates the "elements, rules, and philosophy" of Kendo and as a new student to the Japanese art of fencing it has proved indispensable.

Small Bites For the Beginner.......2005-09-15

This is a very good book that is small enough not to overwhelm a beginner. Also, it is ASL-based with a great explaination of how deaf think (samples of letters written by Deaf individuals are included). Many signs are out-dated, but most of the important ones are the same. You will need another book (or a deaf friend) to explain the signs for the countries listed, as the ones in the book are not used anymore.

There are short lessons followed by practice work such as sentences, songs, and a Bible verse. You might need the help of a deaf friend to check your abilities on this.

This book is a religious book written by a woman who desired to share the Gospel with her deaf child. If you aren't looking for religious sign, don't buy it. It does include many basic conversational words.

I sign and used this book to teach my hearing children. Very good book!!

I have been looking for the Sign Language for everyone book, it was nice to get the book at such a good price. The book was in nice shape and it arrived in good time.

I did not realize this book would be so Christian-oriented. I cannot use this in my classroom as a public school teacher. Also, many of the practice phrases are quite strange (For example, "Pretty baby is bad.")

Sign Language for Everyone.......2000-01-30

Currently, I am leading a Signing class at my church. Using both the videos and book, has helped many who have never been exposed to Sign Language to learn it in a weeks time (depending on their commitment to learn.) Kathy Rice does a good job describing how to form the signs with helpful hints on remembering them. However, some of the signs are a little outdated, but they are still useful. I would recommend this course video and book to anyone who would like to begin learning Sign Language.

I am trying to teach myself sign language, and I have purchasd many books on this subject. This book is one of the best I have used, and I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn sign language alone. The illustrations and the directions are easy to understand and to follow and perform. I especially like the Bible memory verses at the end of each lesson as well as the suggestions of songs and the sentences for practice. There are two videos that go with the book and they help a great deal, but the book can "stand alone" in successfully teaching the novice how to "sign". The videos give extra help in that they offer practice sessions for review. Cathy Rice gives clues for remembering some of the signs..and that is a great help for me. I can totally recommend this book (with or without the videos) to anyone who wants to learn sign language. I also use The Joy of Signing to great advantage. However,Sign Language for Everyone is more relaxing to work with.

I have been collecting Santa for years without even knowing it! I just liked them and bought several a year. This is the only stickpin book I am aware of, and I don't believe there needs to be another one. Great for stickpin collectors, jewelry enthusiasts, etc. Highly recommended!

Interesting and Informative for the Collector!.......1998-12-28

As a collector of all stickpins, I gained much knowledge from this book. It covers many catagories and types of stickpins and scarfpins from all eras prior to the 1940s. It was also fun to just see the quality pictures of this lady's collection. To a collector or dealer, this book will be well worth the price. I refer to it again and again.

Writing from more than forty-five years' experience in collecting and cultivating bulbs, Howard offers expert advice about hundreds of little-known, hybrid, and common species and varieties that grow well in warm climates. His species accounts, which are grouped by family, describe each plant and its growing requirements and often include interesting stories from his collecting expeditions. Lovely color photos illustrate many of the species.

Textbook not a gardening book.......2002-06-25

There is a shortage of books on bulb gardening for Southern gardeners, however this book does little to remedy that shortage. Thad Howard's book reads like a textbook and is not user friendly for the recreational gardener. Basic information such as planting time and depth, soil preference, bloom time, and light needs is missing or scattered in the text. Howard focuses too much on bulb classifications and history and not enough on giving readers advice on how to pick bulbs that will be successful in their garden. Academics and those in the bulb business may enjoy this book, the average gardener will be disatisfied. If Howard wishes to sell more books he should at the least add a legend for each major bulb with basic information the gardener needs.
