Eagle, one of five titles in the Creatures of the Wild series, explores the world of North America's supreme birds of prey, the bald and golden eagles. With their fierce visage and strikingly noble presence, these beautiful animals are naturally photogenic, and the excellent camera work here displays their soaring acrobatics in great detail.
As usual, the focus is primarily on the bald eagle, giving its equally impressive cousin, the golden eagle, short shrift once again. However, the text is quite good, with thorough information on all aspects of eagle behavior and its subtle adaptation to various regional habitats. There are also extensive quotes from the observations of legendary naturalist John James Audubon, and interesting photo captions providing additional information. --George Laney

Eagle: Creatures of the Wild.......2000-03-28
A book my 10 year old daughter throughly enjoyed. Beautiful photographs, lots of information for a person to learn specifics about eagles. Follows a nesting pair of eagles through raising two eaglets. Including building a nest, feeding, teaching to fly, and how the eaglets gain their independance.
Book Description
Rodeo in America celebrates a great national pastime and tradition. Taking the reader "behind the chutes," Wayne Wooden and Gavin Ehringer reveal the essential character of rodeo culture today and show why it retains such a strong hold on the American imagination.
As the authors detail, contemporary rodeo has evolved into a much publicized big-time phenomenon even as it strives to stay close to its fundamental cowboy roots. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) now sanctions 750 to 800 annual rodeos worth more than $22 million in prize money, attended by nearly 20 million spectators, and watched by millions more on ESPN and TNN. The National Finals Rodeo (NFR) alone offers more than $2 million in prize money and is attended by 170,000 spectators every December in Las Vegas.
Filled with telling anecdotes and insightful observations, the authors highlight rodeo's glamour and glory, hazards and hardships, while clarifying its many dimensions as sport, profession, business, community event, family tradition, and pop cultural icon. Bareback and bull riders, calf ropers and steer wrestlers, barrel racers and saddle bronc busters, bullfighters and arena clowns, stock breeders and local organizers, judges and journalists, the famous and aspiring, winners and losers--all are given their due in a work that reflects the enormous allure and demands of rodeo life.
Based on research and interviews conducted at the National Finals, as well as at rodeos large and small in San Francisco, Denver, Houston, Cheyenne, Calgary, Dodge City, Pendleton, and Prescott, among many others, Rodeo in America provides an entertaining and highly readable guide for aficionados and novices alike.
Customer Reviews:
The true rodeo book.......2001-02-04
I just recently dicovered this book and boy was I surprised. Personally, I found this book very helpful for the fact that I am a bullrider myself and found the information within it's pages very useful and insightful. It explains the origins of rodeo to the very way to play the game! With in-depth pages on Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Riding, Bullriding, Barrel-Racing, and almost every other rodeo event, I don't think you'll find a clearer perspective on rodeo unless you started riding! Please take it from me, for the best book on rodeo, look to "Rodeo In America"
An Overview from the Inside.......2000-06-03
Personal quotes from current and former rodeo participants enliven this look at one of America's oldest sports. Using the results of a questionnaire, you learn how they think of their lives and their jobs. The authors delve into the good and bad of rodeo, from the financial cost to the medical woes, from the exclusion of women to the changes in the sport, from rodeo history to its possible future. If you're interested in rodeo, you should get this book....

Customer Reviews:
A comprehensive guide to the uses of literary agents.......2007-01-11
I both enjoyed reading Author 101 and greatly benefited from this book. It's relevant for me to point out that I am at the journeyman level as an author of fiction . I have a lively interest in seeking representation of my work by literary agents. I have little experience in how one goes about selecting literary agents with the interest and competence to represent my work to the appropriate publishers. AUTHOR 101 serves me well in this regard. It is an authoritative guide in the selection of the "right" literary agent, how to establish contact, how to present one's work and how to engage the interest of literary agents. The authors not only provide expert guidance on these issues, the book is also a reference work and a practical manual. A series of appendices provide information on such subjects as resource directories as well as canons of ethics. AUTHOR 101 will be of value not only to authors who are relative newcomers to the always challenging undertaking to get their work published, but also to experienced authors who wish to avail themselves of this book as a comprehensive statement of the uses of literary agents in achieving publication.
Learn the Drill to Snag An Agent.......2006-04-23
In today's economic climate, if you want to publish books, almost every writer needs a literary agent. Frishman and Spizman have launched a series of how-to books with the brand name Author 101. Each book looks almost identical except for the color and the information between the covers. This book on agents is excellent.
For many years, each of these authors have been involved in publishing yet they expand their experience and have interviewed many top agents. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about the publishing industry, how the agenting process works and how to locate the best agent for you and your writing.
I particularly liked the chapter called Reports from the Trenches where agents subscribed a submission and what caught their attention. As George Greenfield of Creative Well wrote, "When you have absolute belief in a project, you must sometimes walk through walls of cool rejection before you feel the warm glow of success."
Another well-done chapter captures the top 25 dislikes of agents. "Writers can turn off agents in lots of ways, such as when they lack commitment, submit inquiries without doing their homework, and are not willing to promote their books." This book makes a solid addition to the available information on agents.
Every Aspiring Author Should Read This Book.......2006-03-08
Every aspiring author should read this book very carefully. It is highly informative and well articulated. The authors have obviously thought deeply about the subject, and they write with a gracious tone that lets you know of the challenges without making you feel put down.
This book empowers you with the right perceptions and will help you immensely to give proper focus to your efforts. It will help you to avoid wasting much time and other resources on misguided hopes, and it is up-to-date, letting you know of current practices, for example, the great importance of having a platform. I have found it to be really useful. An excellent book!

Customer Reviews:
A Junior "Batman Animated".......2000-08-29
This book seems to be a BATMAN ANIMATED for a younger audience. It's a useful collection of things related to the first season of BATMAN BEYOND but not as rich as ANIMATED. There are some model sheets, some background paintings, some storyboards, some scenes from the episodes, and a couple of pages from the DC comics, but these things are used only as design elements, not presented as information in themselves. But don't get me wrong. It still has useful descriptions of the Batsuit's capabilities, illustrations of the main characters (including the villains, though Blight, for some reason, gets short shrift), and synopses of the episodes. Personally, I would have preferred more model sheets and some synopses from the second season. I'll hope for another edition that will cover the 2nd/3rd seasons.
Any One Who Gives This A Review Below 5 Stars is Anti-Batman.......2000-07-29
This book has many good profiles and is a cool book.It has neat diagrams and cool posters and I plan to get the book someday(I saw it at a book store). I give it 5 stars and two thumbs up.
Not as good as Batman Animated, but not a bad overview of BB.......2000-05-13
Let me preface this by saying I am NOT the biggest fan of Batman Beyond (frankly I've been disappointed by the series), but I am a big fan of animation and do tend to collect books like this.
This book is not a bad introduction to people who have not followed Batman Beyond closely or have never heard of the series. It's well illustrated with character designs, partial storyboard reproductions -- overall it's a very slickly designed book. What you shouldn't expect is a very in-depth look at the production of the series OR extensive interviews with the production team of Batman Beyond (BB).
This book is far more reminiscent of Aeon Flux: The Herodotus File more than anything else with brief character bios and a synopsis of the entire first season episodes (13 of 'em) of Batman Beyond.
Even if you don't like the overall direction of the Batman Beyond stories, you have to admit the character designs are very well done.
This book, in my opinion is about three-and-a-half stars (although Amazon doesn't do half-stars) and a worthy addition to the collection of Batfreaks and animation fans.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Overview for the Novice.......2000-03-30
I found the previous review interesting and educational; the reviewer sounds experienced and practiced in the field of canine nutrition. I, however, was not and found Pat's overview informative. She is suggestive about topics controversial in natural dog care, but responsibly cites that it is controversial. Note that many well-written vets such as Schoen and Pitcairn recommend her book in theirs. Because little has been done in the way of vetrinary nutritional research (I am a former medical researcher), much of any of this information is largely assumptive. I thank the previous reviewer for his/her insight and congratulate Pat Lazarus in her attempt to give (as a good journalist and researcher would) a comprehensive picture with varying opinions and, as an author is licensed to do, give her opinion and deliver her experience to benefit others.
Good Intro to Natural Dog Care but Skip Chapter on Nutrition.......1999-09-13
This is a new, completely revised edition of Lazarus' "Keep Your Pet Healthy the Natural Way" except that she has chosen to write a separate book on natural cat care this time around. As with her first book which was published 15+ years ago, Lazarus did the research for this book by sending questionnaires to a number of holistic vets. As a result, we get the views and treatment approaches of a number of different vets (including Dr. Martin Goldstein, Dr. John Fudens, Dr. Carvel Tiekert, etc.). Unfortunately not all of the advice has been updated (some of it appeared in her first book), and she does not point out which recommendations were given by the vets 15 years ago and which ones are current.
The first part of the book deals with preventing disease. It starts with a chapter on the problems with commercial foods which should be interesting to those not already familiar with Ann Martin's, Dr. Goldstein's, or Dr. Pitcairn's books. Then Lazarus goes into feeding a natural diet, and this is definitely the worst part of the book, since the diet she recommends is dangerously unbalanced. It does not contain nearly enough calcium to balance out the high phosphorous levels in the meats and grains she recommends feeding. Also, a diet consisting of just 33% - 50% raw meat is not really optimal for a healthy canine. Dogs, after all, are carnivores, and our long experience with natural rearing and feeding indicates that they tend to do best on a diet that consists of 75% raw meat and bones. Unfortunately Lazarus does not really approve of feeding bones. She says that of the 10 holistic vets she questioned on this subject, 7 said not to give any bones, 2 said that only a specific type of bone was okay (e.g., ox tails), and only one vet was completely in favor of feeding bones. Feeding bones remains a controversial subject and many vets are only now coming around to the idea that bones are an important part of the canine diet (see Dr. Goldstein's recent book). Not only do they supply the calcium that is necessary to balance out the high phosphorous content of the meat, but they also supply numerous other valuable minerals and trace minerals. Most importantly perhaps, feeding soft, raw bones (stay away from those big beef femur bones as they can wear down and even break teeth and never feed cooked bones which are dangerous since they are dry and brittle and splinter easily in addition to being difficult to digest) will prevent your dogs from developing tooth or gum problems which present an enormous health hazard. Your dogs will never have to be put under to have their teeth cleaned. Our dogs have been eating raw bones (along with other foods) for almost thirty years and their health could not be any better. It's really best to skip the chapter on nutrition and go straight to the chapter on vaccinations. Lazarus covers the potential dangers of vaccinating, nosodes, making vaccination decisions, and minimizing the harmful effects of vaccines. IMO, she is a little too enthusiastic about using homeopathic nosodes instead of vaccines. Not only does it violate the principles of classical homeopathy to use nosodes as routine preventatives the same way one would use a vaccine, but it's my experience that nosodes simply aren't very effective when used in this manner in hopes of preventing the most dangerous viral diseases (i.e., parvo and distemper). This is not to say that vaccinations are always effective or that one should definitely vaccinate, but I've often seen nosodes give people a false sense of security which is not a good thing.
The second part of Lazarus' book deals with natural therapies for skeletal disease, eye problems, skin and coat problems, infectious diseases, cancer, diabetes, cystitis, parasites, kidney disorders, heart problems, etc. This is definitely the best part of the book, since it's interesting to read how holistic vets across the country treat these problems. The book also contains a nationwide directory of holistic vets which will be helpful to those looking for a holistic vet in their area.
All in all, this would have made a pretty good introduction to holistic health care for dogs if it wasn't for the terrible chapter on nutrition. That makes it suitable as an introductory book only if it's purchased along with a good book on feeding a natural diet (check out books by Juliette de Bairacli Levy, Wendy Volhard, Dr. Pitcairn, and Dr. Billinghurst on this topic).

Book Description
Charles Wilber tells his personal story of learning to work with nature, and his philosophy and approach to gardening. He reveals for the first time how he grows record-breaking tomatoes and produce of every variety. There's no magic involved. Just a well thought out system that gives plants more than they could ever want, and makes it possible for them to reach their full potential. Wilber's compost is the cornerstone along with a wide circumference around plants layered with compost, alfalfa meal and mulch. Valuable pruning and watering details are given, too, as well as a new way of looking at seeds. As you will learn, growing awesome tomatoes integrates every aspect of gardening that you can imagine.
Customer Reviews:
Great organic gardening book.......2007-02-20
If you have ever thought of turning to organic gardening then this book will be very helpful. If you have been practicing organic gandening for years there are still some enlightning new theories for you here. If you believe you can get good produce to grow from a brick with the proper amount of chemical fertilizer and don't plan on changing your mind then this book is a waste of time.
grow the best tomatoes.......2006-11-10
This book gives you some new and different ideas on how to grow tomatoes.
I can't wait for spring to try it.
Growing World Record Tomatoes.......2005-12-28
This book and the informative resources contained within its pages are invaluable to the garden tomato grower who wants more than just "average" tomatoes. I have already read each page several times over.
Great Tomato Book!.......2002-12-02
Having had the past growing season to try out the techniques in this book, I highly recommend it. While I live in an area where I may never have crops like Charles Wilbur, with the techniques he demonstrates in his book, I more than doubled my tomato crop this past season! That right there made this book worth it.
Grow More Tomatoes Than You Ever Thought Possible.......2001-12-28
I read this book cover-to-cover several times before preparing my 2001 garden. This system works. While I didn't get 30 foot tall plants like Mr. Wilber, I probably quadrupled my previous best results -- and that was only my first try. Everybody who saw my plants commented that they had never seen such healthy, productive specimens. (Wait until they see my plants next year!)
Even if you don't follow his instructions to the letter, you will likely get much better results than you ever had previously. While the compost and mulching are super-important, I think THE most important advice to follow is to build large, strong cages per the instructions. Your plants will be so big that they will literally crush any "normal" tomato cage you can buy at a nursery.
Organic gardening is the ONLY method that makes sense, when you really get into it. I'll go head-to-head with anybody who gardens using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. My plants will be bigger, healthier, with bigger yields of better-tasting produce.

Book Description
Twenty years ago, cub re-porter David Johnson had an idea for a column: he'd pick a name at random from the telephone book and write a story on the person who answered his call. Visiting journalist Charles Kuralt overheard his plan and proclaimed it the best idea he'd ever heard-and the popular column "Everybody Has a Story" was born. Today, over 800 Americans have shared their personal stories in the pages of the Lewiston Morning Tribune, and for David Johnson, the trip of two decades has taught him lessons he never imagined. In this book, you'll meet many of the people whose perspectives changed David's life. Not only have they reminded him of life's "universal ingredients," the hopes and dreams we all share, but they've commented, each in their idiosyncratic way, on what is truly important.
Customer Reviews:
thumbs up.......2005-11-23
Thumbs up to all those ordinary people who help this book be much more than an ordinary read!
"Epiphanies will always be elusive.".......2005-08-28
When I found this little book,I thought it was a typical 'Road Book';but it wasn't.The author is a small town newspaper columnist, and who is quite happy to live the simple small town life with a job he enjoys,a family he loves,a home he and his wife created out in the country;and that is about all he really yearns for---the simple life. The newspaper that employs him has had its ups and downs, and ownership changes as is so common these days;but through the years Johnson has survived it all;if sometimes only barely; but then that is all he really wants. He is basically a writer who writes a human interest column. He has come up with a novel method of searching out his subjects--he simply picks them at random from his telephone directly. What he finds is that he has an unlimited source of interesting people to write about and all within a short distance of his home.He shows that virtually everyone, and no matter how ordinary their lives seem to be,there is always something interesting about their life experience to write about.
That is about all there is to this book.Except for one thing.A few years ago a friend recommended that I read "The Stone Diaries' by Carol Sheilds. It was a very similar book, written about ordinary people and their lives. The one big difference is that Sheilds won a Pulitzer Prize for her efforts.
I looked up her book and read the Customer Reviews and they are very mixed. Some think the book was wonderful and really deserved the prize, while others just couldn't see where it was merited.
The two books are very similar and if you like Johnston's you are sure to like Sheild's.Likewise; if you find one rather mundane ;you're likely to find the other the same.
Here is what Johnson has to say in a nutshell:
"Over the better part of two decades, these people have confirmed the notion that everyone is worthy of the front page. Moreover, they've shown me how to appreciate the simple things we already have within our grasp and the exhilaration that comes with looking ahead-like to the next person who answers a random call. Most of the answers to life's riddles hide not in the profound, but in the ordinry;not in the unusual;but in the conventional;not in the celebrity pages of a newspaper, but perhaps in the the white pages of a phone book."
Good writing that keeps your attention.......2004-08-16
If your dream evening is to sit at a stangers diner table to pry into their greatest victories and defeats without the fear of having to answer the same questions then this book is for you. Its a fascinating read into the lives of many obscure characters. I agree that Johnson's book reads as an autobiography with sideline stories of others (the title tells otherwise) but he does have an interesting story to tell and can tell it very well. I would'nt pay a lot of money for it but I would read it and pass it on to others looking for a few evenings as a dining room guest.
a new appreciation.......2002-10-23
I read this book in just two days! It's enjoyable to read with plenty of light humor, but it also touches on deeper issues like love, family, faith, and personal loss. The author relates the lives of the people he interviews with his own life, and he shows that seemingly 'ordinary' people have something important to share with others. This book gave me a new appreciation for the people I come into contact with everyday.
Enjoyable stories but tends to self-promote.......2002-08-31
I found many of the stories enjoyable but the author tends to inject his own life into too much of the work which is distracting. The book would be better served by a cursory introduction followed by the many wonderful stories of everyday people (stories that I find much more enjoyable than any Hollywood could produce). Instead the author wraps his own life into many of the stories which creates more of a story about him instead of about the people. It would be better to get this book from the Library and try to skip over the self-promotion.

I found a closer relationship with God to give me great peace and someone to turn to whenever I need help in my life. Whether I am sad, anxious, lost, afraid, or depressed, I have found God to be at my side when I need Him. I wasn't always that close or dependent on God, and the journey to arrive to where I am today was a hard and long one, filled with highs and lows. My account is a document of that journey.

Book Description
Honed by poverty, harsh weather and the bitterness of British rule, Ireland’s children left their native land by the tens of thousands at the turn of the century. This is the story of the Finns, the McCanns and the Kellys, three families who battle their way from the New York City ghetto to the respectability of Astoria, Long Island. As their prosperity grows, so too does a fierce love for the country that took them in and gave them opportunity to be free of the degradation of poverty. When that country calls during World War II, they answer with enthusiasm and learn to love, fear, live and die far from the land they have grown to love.

Smith brings you back to the War years, and gives them life. Whether or not you were alive, you feel like you lived them. The characters are rich and well developed. I didn't want the book to end. Looking forward to the sequel.
