Book Description
Driven collects the best of internationally acclaimed racecar photographer Jesse Alexander's work taken between 1954-1962, the height of the golden age of the European Grand Prix. During the pinnacle of continental glamour, Alexander took his camera throughout Europe, following this intimate group of fearless racecar drivers from Grand Prix to Mille Miglia, and capturing their heroic wins and narrow defeats. In one photograph Jackie Stewart accepts the Grand Prix trophy cup from Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. Alexander's images hum with an energy and seduction second only to the sleek bodies and powerful engines of these now vintage Maseratis, Mercedes, Ferraris, and Porsches. His captions describe the renegade adventures, dangerous courses, and technological breakthroughs of the time. With an essay by world-class British racer Stirling Moss, Driven takes a nostalgic look back at the elegance and innocence of motorsport's most memorable years.

Great period book!.......2000-12-22
The opportunity to view a collection from such a vibrant time in motorsports history, by a noted and aclaimed photographer, should be seized. Any die-hard racing enthusiast is certain to appreciate the many vantage points of the photos in gaining a sense of what the period was truly like.
la Tour de Force Automobile.......2000-10-12
First, a disclaimer: my desk faces framed prints of Fangio at Monaco, 1956, and Fangio at Reims, 1958 by Jesse Alexander, and my copy of the sadly out-of-print LOOKING BACK is signed by the photographer and Juan Manuel Fangio. But even if names like Jean Behra and Wolfgang von Trips are unfamiliar, anyone with a love of sport and a sense of nostalgia for a less populated and more hopeful late '50's Europe will be enthralled by DRIVEN. Jesse Alexander's timing and composition are peerless, capturing not just the machines, but the souls of the men who risked their lives for sport in the optimistic days between the Second World War and Vietnam. The familiar images of Gurney, Moss, and Fangio brim with vigor and confidence. The images of the great Jimmy Clark verge on the iconic. Perhaps my favorite image is that of the Porsche team's garage at Le Mans in 1959: the French street urchins in the background are right out of the RED BALOON. I could go on, but perhaps the best review of the work in the book is the forward by Sir Stirling Moss, whose eloquent reminiscences and insights stand in stark contrast to the bone-headed comments we see from today's "Karting With Bernie" racing drivers. The layout and printing would be superb at four times the price--this book is a must-have, and the first edition is sure to sell out. If you love racing, buy it!

Book Description
Richard Montauk, a savvy admissions insider who is also a lawyer, demystifies the entire law school application process and provides targeted tools to ace every step. Incorporating advice and insights from dozens of admissions directors, this significantly revised edition of How to Get into the Top Law Schools offers an in-depth and candid view of what leading law schools look for in an applicant-and gives solid, information on how to assess and upgrade credentials to better match that ideal profile.
Customer Reviews:
The Most Honest Book on the Market.......2007-05-22
As other reviewers mentioned, Montauk's book is the most complete tome on the subject of law school admissions to date. It's also very honest. It is hard to get into a top 20 law school and he makes sure the reader understands this fact. He also lets the reader know that for many people, law is the wrong choice and will only lead to lots of debt and unhappieness in the future.
The negative reviews on Amazon seem to come from people who were taken aback that Montauk might suggest that law isn't right for everyone, but he is really doing potential applicants a favor. If a brief diatribe on the pitfalls of law scares you away, you probably weren't that committed to it anyway. The dark secrets that law schools/law firms don't want you to know:
1. If you don't go to a top law school (at least top 25), you will not have a good chance of getting a Biglaw job, i.e. the highest paying most coveted jobs in the industry. If you pay full price at a school outside of the top 25 and expect to make big bucks upon graduation, you might find out, as so many other students have, that you cannot find a job that pays well enough to justify the $150k in loans you just took out for law school.
Note--If you have alternative career plans or receive substantial scholarship money, then this changes the equation.
2. Most lawyers are unhappy with their jobs (regardless of salary). A recent survey showed that 75% of lawyers would not go to law school if they could do it all over again.
Moral of the story: Forget the "you can do whatever you put your mind to!" crowds and take a realistic look at your talents, situation, and the legal profession. Some people aren't well-suited for law and many people will hate the profession--even those who are good at it. Just realize this before spending 3 years of your life and $150k-$180k to go to law school.
If you decide that law is for you, Montauk's book is the best for increasing your chances of admission.
kla.......2007-05-05
Richard Mountauk's guide on "How to Get Into the Top Law Schools" is a thorough, comprehensive, candid, and convenient must have for anyone considering law school. It takes you from the very initial process of thinking about law school to dealing with acceptances, waitlists, denials, transferring options, and to first-year law school experience. It gives you the tools you need on how to market yourself effectively and strategize your application packet to put you in the best light possible, and thus possibly improving your chances to your top choices. With cited quotes and excerpts on various subjects and topics from admissions officers themselves, that are heavily inserted throughout the entire book, one knows they are getting first-hand knowledge. This is an organized, effective, and excellent resource for one to have for a behind the scenes look at a process that few are privy too. Definitely a must read!
Incredibly helpful.......2007-03-18
Applying to law school can be a stressful process no matter who you are. I bought this book in the midst of the application process, after already writing a few drafts of my personal statement, meeting with teachers for recommendation and hundreds of hours of research into schools and a couple meetings with my school's law advisor. It far exceeded my expectations. Not only was it helpful, but it took some of the mystery out of the process and taught me to how "sell" myself to the schools.
To take it a step further, under the direction of the small passage at the beginning of the book, I met with Mr. Montauk for more specific advice. Under his direction I put together a very strong personal statement (completely different than my original), teacher recommendations (he advised the recommenders), resume and additional essays. He also gave me insight on how to succeed in law school and once I am out. After my first 2 hour meeting with him I walked away knowing it was the best money I ever spent.
After looking at almost ever law school entrance book, this was by far the most informative and well-rounded (spanning beyond law school into a career). I would also highly recommend meeting with Mr. Montauk in person if your LSAT and GPA scores don't fully reflect your potential to practice law.
There is no doubt in my mind that if I hadn't met with Mr. Montauk I wouldn't have been accepted to some of the schools I got into.
Essential Guidance.......2006-10-23
This book has served as a valuable guide through my undergraduate years. I purchased the first book before my sophomore year of college, and I believe the knowledge I gained has helped me to make the right choices in my endeavor toward law school. If you are an undergraduate student, and you aspire to law school, buy this book now. The longer you have it, the more helpful it will be during your preparation. If you are ready to apply, you will learn how avoid mistakes and put forth the best possible application you have to offer. The quotes from admissions people helped me to understand which schools I was best suited for and which ones to avoid. The path of law is a very important choice, and I appreciate that Mr. Montauk takes a prospective student from that decision process all the way through to tips for study success after the acceptance letter. As a side note, I had an urgent question about my law school application, and Mr. Montauk was kind enough to return my call (his phone number is in this book) on a Sunday. I wholeheartedly recommend this book!
Very Helpful.......2005-11-28
Oh thanksgiving day, I am thankful for this book and the great help it was for me during the past year.
If you are applying to law school or even thinking about it, get this book, it is very helpful. It has examples of essays to help you figure out how to write your personal essays, it also has a time line, so you can schedule the year accordingly until the time you are planning to get into that law school of your choice.well that is just couple of examples, but it is great.
Good Luck

Great Information =].......2007-06-17
I found this book to have a lot of information. I loved how they used quotes from 'important' people at colleges. I wish that they had put more information in about different schools. There was a lot of great stuff about important topics though. For example, getting reccomendations. I found a lot of this information useful, and I know that I will be coming back to this book throughout my education. Thank you! =]
A Nuts and Bolts Approach to Tackling College Applications.......2006-12-07
This comprehensive book covers it all from understanding the rankings and deciding where to apply to test taking, positioning yourself, and writing essays (a particularly in-depth analysis). There are even chapters on applying to the US service academies and colleges abroad. Every parent should read the chapter on Financing College as the options have changed dramatically since we went to school. Among the highlights of this book are the abundant quotations from admissions officers at the top schools, including the Ivies. They broaden the book's perspective and help clarify the similarities and differences between schools. If you buy one college admissions guide, this should be the one.
Can Be Helpful, But Causes Anxiety.......2006-08-29
While this book has a lot of good points, I think a better title would be You're Not Panicked Enough: The Admissions Guide For Families That Want More Stress. It should be noted that the book is written by paid professionals who help students get into elite colleges. Therefore, if families weren't worried about getting into those schools, the authors would make less money. The authors state things that have been proven false in books like Harvard Schmarvard such as you have greater chance to succeed and get higher salaries or have more opportunities if you attend an elite college. That's not true. Read Jay Matthews. Read Loren Pope. How to Get into the Top Colleges claims that rather foolish tricks like applying to a weaker division of a university in order to gain admission so you can transfer to the division you really want later are sometimes okay. They state, in all seriousness, that students should skip admissions interviews if they are anorexic or if they are "so contentious they will inevitably get into a verbal battle with the interviewer" or if they can't modify inappropriate behavior such as dressing like a neo-Nazi skinhead. Actually folks, parents of kids like those should probably be looking into therapy or nurturing care facilities instead of highly stressful college environments.
To be fair, this book does have a lot to offer, and the breadth of topics it covers is exhaustive. There are informative quotes from admissions officials at various colleges, although their definition of a top college focuses on exclusivity rather than educational opportunity. They have a large number of well-written essays that could give students ideas on how to compose effective essays of their own. Some of their advice on how to approach a teacher for a recommendation is very wise. (For example, make sure you give the teacher the opportunity to say no if she doesn't think she can write a "strong letter.")
Still, I do not recommend this book because of the atmosphere it creates. My favorite is the Fiske Guide to Getting into the Right College. It's the most readable and concise. (How to Get into the Top Colleges is very thick and probably too overwhelming for busy students. It's really geared for the parent consumed with the prestige schools.). Fiske also creates a calming atmosphere. While not as clear as Fiske, I think families that insist on focusing only on the elite colleges would do pretty well with Admissions Matters by Sally Springer. It prepares students for the application process without scaring them and goes into more detail on application strategies for the toughest schools than Fiske.
Honestly, How to Get into the Top Colleges would probably help the kind of student with stellar GPA's and incredible test scores who will only look at schools like Swarthmore and Stanford. But if you find that the things in the book are making you hyperventilate, stop reading it and buy a different title.
Best college guide on the market for parents!.......2006-03-07
As both an educator and parent, I have read most of the college guides on the market written primarily for parents going through the college application and selection process for the first time. This comprehensive publication clearly explains all parts of the college application and how they are weighted by those who will ultimateley determine ones admittance or rejection. The authors' explanation of the early decision and early action options are the best I have read anywhere. There are many helpful suggestions for evaluating the college rating guides, visiting campuses and writing effective essays. Selecting the right college from the 5000+ choices across the nation can be a daunting task. Today, tuitions in private colleges can run between 140,000 and 170,000 dollars for a four year degree. Parents must become more informed and involved in this very important and expensive decision. To this end, How to Get Into the Top Colleges, is one of the best resources available to both parents and students alike. Good-luck!
a practical college guide book.......2004-09-26
This book is strongly recommended to those who have almost no idea of applying for colleges. It contains almost everything throughout the whole process you will encounter. NOTE: this book is designed mainly for general white american citizens or green card holders. If you are a minority or international student, there's not much information that is suitable for you.

Nice Pose Resources!.......2005-01-27
This is really a comprehensive “poses” resource book (see customers’ image) that has many different kind of poses and drawing examples. However, please note that the examples inside are mainly sketches and looks more like real-life pencil drawings rather than manga drawings. Regardless of that, the wide range of sketches in the book will prove to be a valuable resource on a variety of poses and actions.
The book features many different kinds of basic poses from sitting, standing, walking, lying down and so forth, and other than poses, there are also a few sections on faces, mouths, hands, heads and legs in a variety of angles and poses. In addition, there are also collections of drawings on babies, children and overweight people. The expressions section is also very useful as it portrays various emotions from joy, sadness, anger and even some monkey faces. Be forewarned though, there are some nudity in the book.
While I couldn’t find more dynamic action poses in the book, it must be taken in mind the limited space of the book. Nevertheless, it’s a good, practical resource of daily and everyday poses; all you need to do is to “modify” the almost real-life pencil sketches to your own manga-style drawings, and you're done!

The GSD - there IS no other dog!!!.......2006-08-27
Nice book. A really good intro to the GSD. Really, I like the fact that the authors mention that the GSD is a great all around dog that needs something to do. They stress training, not mean training, but positive training. This dog is the ultimate dog.
Very mediocre book. I expected more.......2001-03-15
Thin book with Good pictures, very nice words about GS dog very little obidience and not much about dog phsycology. No good examples. Very compact book. If you want more comprehensive info on GS dog look somewhere else. this book is just a touch up on most common topics.

This book contains just what the person contemplating getting a German Shepherd Dog needs. I've owned German Shepherds all my life and know a great deal about the breed. This book gives everything you need to be a successful and proud GSD owner. Easy to read and understand. Great book for experienced GSD owners too. Pete Brevik
I couldn't put this book down!.......2001-01-12
I have been looking at getting a dog for the last six months and have just recently focused on the German Shepherd Dog. There are a ton of available books out there, and I'm sure there are many very good ones. This one caught my eye, however, becuase its co-written by "Uncle Matty", who I first saw on his PBS show "Woof! It's a dog's life". The care and love he showered the dogs on the show, especially the ones with "behaviour problems" endeared him to me from the start. He brings the same warmth and compassion to "The Good Shepherd", and includes loads of useful info as well. He is also very practical about what kind of dog the GSD is and what kind of person the owner needs to be. Honest and perceptive, this book convinced me that the German Shepherd dog is the right best friend for me!
It is about German Shepherd Dogs!.......2000-01-30
Many reviews I read for other books about breeds criticized them for being very generic, with barely one chapter about the breed itself. This entire book is about the German Shepherd! The book's table of contents illustrates what I mean. 1)Meet the German Shepherd Dog 2)A Bit of History 3)Amazing German Shepherds 4)The Shepherd Bond 5)Shepherd Gear (What Your dog Needs) 6)Feeding Your dog 7)House-Breaking Your German Shepherd Dog 8)Obedience-Training Your German Shepherd 9)German Shepherd Behavior Problems 10)Keeping Your German Shepherd Dog Healthy 11)Canine Medical Conditions 12)Medical Problems Common to the German Shepherd Dog 13)Home Medical Care 14)The Most-Asked Questions About the German Shepherd Dog Appendix: Guide Dog Schools

Shade can be a gardener's curse or delight, depending on how it's managed. Even a heavy grove of mature trees needn't have bare ground beneath; they can be surrounded with any number of shade-loving foliage, grasses, or grasslike ground covers, including galax, dichondra, ivy, vinca, wintergreen, maidenhair fern... the list of possibilities is a long one. Druse himself gardens in the shadow of a Brooklyn brownstone, so his advice is by no means limited to gardeners with woodland acreage. This book also successfully punctures the myth that a shady flower garden must be colored in greens and subtle pastels: a parade of brilliant camellias, columbines, clematis, and primula proves that a shade gardener's crayon box is as varied as any, and the well-organized Druse sorts the herbaceous perennials by color in an addendum at the back of the book.
Book Description
Ken Druse's Natural Garden Guides:
Award-winning gardening expert Ken Druse offers a personal selection of 80 ideal plants for the natural gardener, drawn from his best-selling classic

Here, too, is indispensable advice for using these plants with companions to create striking designs. Each section has an original introduction presenting valuable techniques for making your own natural garden. An appendix gives mail-order sources.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Pictures, mind-numbing text.......2005-07-07
If you like pretty pictures, then this book is for you. I bought it in conjunction with "The Complete Shade Gardener", which is black and white, to be a sort of color companion. The section of the book titled Plants and Plantings goes through the author's favorite plants for shade (which very well may be all of them) and gives a text description that does very little to give you any real understanding of the plant-not what it looks like, or how to grow it. Perhaps worst of all, the pictures in this section don't seem to correspond to the text of what the author is describing at all, so you are forced to thumb ahead or behind to see a picture of the plant the author is talking about at the time. This makes it very hard to read as you are always thumbing through the pages to find a picture of the flower the author is talking about.
The first 60 pages deal with inspiration and design, and are much easier to understand, as well as being laid out better than the next 100. The last part of the book, which presents individual garden examples also seems to be better organized and well written, although I haven't read it through yet.
Since about 2/5 of this book was enjoyable, I am giving it 2 stars. The middle section has all the monotony of a plant encyclopedia with half the information, and none of the organization. The strengths of the book stand out as the beautifully photographed plates, and the pleasant tone of the author, which still manages to be witty and friendly even during the monotonous middle section.
Beautiful Shade Garden book.......2005-03-20
We have a shady, sloped yard in Texas which is highly unusual for this part of Texas. This means we usually can't grow many of the plants that most people in our community do. So, my husband and I went to the bookstore and found this book. There were others on shade gardening, but this had the best photography. The publisher obviously used high-quality printing techniques on this book to get the vivid color. So, this makes just a beautiful book to look at. I used to feel a little disappointed that our yard was so shaded (except that it's cooler in the hot Texas sun than others!), but when I saw this book I realized we could make it into quite a gem.
I will admit that I am a novice gardener, but I found this book inspiring with lots of ideas for plants that we could use in the shade. I am not sorry that I spent $40 on this book!
A must have book for every gardener.......2004-11-10
Ken Druse delivers a great perspective on shade gardening, providing an understanding of different types of shade and the plants that are successful. The wonderful photography makes this book a joy to peek into successful gardens and plant combinations. The text is for moderately experienced gardeners, but flows well and is well organized.
As mentioned by several others, Druse too often suggests invasive plants such as ivy, porcelain berry, and purple loosestrife, so a word of caution is in order. I would like to see Druse taking a leadership role in awareness of these problem plants.
On the whole, this is another terrific book from Ken Druse and I highly recommend it to everyone who loves a shady garden on a warm summer day.
inspiring and practical.......2002-02-07
If you have a shady garden space, this book will make you feel like the luckiest gardener in the world. Ken Druse structured the book around the organization of natural woodland plants: understory, middle layer, and overstory. (Note that this is not the right book for you if you are looking to create a formal shady garden.) The beautiful photographs, both closeup and scenic, and the detailed yet readable text make this book a success on two fronts. There is enough practical advice to take you from designing your shade garden to keeping it healthy and beautiful through the seasons and years. There is even a resource list to help with ordering your plants. Did I mention how amazing the photographs are? This is my favorite garden book so far, and I am accumulating quite a little collection.
Partial shade, dappled shade, and deep shade are all addressed with beautiful pictures of plants and gardens and with descriptive, practical text.
Not for the beginner...........2001-04-14
THE NATURAL SHADE GARDENER by Ken Druse is a beautiful book even if the photos are slightly "touched up." I have to laugh at the oxymoronic title, however. There is nothing natural about shade gardening, and this is not the WILD GARDEN William Robinson wrote about where drifts of plants are allowed to form naturally. I can tell from Druse's photos someone has been working very hard. Nature's version of vegetation in shade is quite different. Plants in nature tend to run to riot. If you don't think so, take a walk in the "real" woods. In nature, the toughest plant wins.
For example, Druse says English Ivy is a good ground cover in shade. Well, it is. English Ivy will grow in shade---and grow and grow and grow. Recently, a group of local volunteers in our area pulled English Ivy from the trees in a local nature preserve. The stuff kills. Another vine Druse recommends without a warning is Porcelain-berry which is becoming a major problem in along the east coast. Are you old enough to remember the introduction of the new wonder vine Kudzu??
On the other hand, Druse says Tradescantia, a native of Virginia brought to England where it was hybridized at Kew Gardens is a pest. Well, it is a prolific plant if you reintroduce it in a Zone 7 garden, but it can be controlled without a great deal of effort, unlike Lysimachia clethroides (White Gooseneck Loosestrife) which Druse recommends without warning that it will take over if you invite it into your garden. Allen Lacey and other garden writers have ID'd Gooseneck Loosestrife as a "thug in the garden" and I can tell you from personal experience they are absolutely correct (of course I had to find out for myself!!).
I tend to agree with the reviewer from Maplewood NJ below who says THE NATURAL SHADE GARDEN by Ken Druse is not for the beginner. This book is for advanced gardeners who can "take what they need and leave the rest." Shade gardening is something you take up after you've mastered other less complicated types of gardening. Of course, if you're stuck with shade you'll have to start somewhere.
I have been using George Shenk's book THE COMPLETE SHADE GARDENER for years. It's not as colorful, and contains those annotated lists of plants which some do not like, however, Shenk's plant classifications are not exhaustive so you won't be overwhelmed, and the trees, shrubs, etc. are classified by their behavior--i.e. what will work in which circumstances. Like many gardeners I once planted a Maple tree in my yard. Shenk's book contains a listing of shade trees and from it I discovered Maple trees are shallow rooted and not at all friendly toward other plants. I also discovered the Black Walnut can be a killer. In the nick of time had the Maple tree removed and planted a Persian Walnut instead. I've been able to grow Crepe Myrtles, Viburnums, Nandina, and a host of other plants under the Walnut, though I sometimes have to water in August. Some of us don't want to end our gardening experience in order to have a shady patio in July.

No Index!.......2001-08-11
An otherwise great little book (anything by Ken Druse is worth reading) is made frustrating by the lack of an index. Very frustrating in fact--although there is a general table of contents in the front, you can't look up anything specific or even be sure it is covered. Too bad!
80 Great Natural Shade Garden Plants.......2000-07-02
The book is smaller than Natural Shade Gardening, and more of a reference guide than coffee-table inspiration book. The pictures are still excellent and the information about each plant is detailed.

Book Description
The Spirit of Prophecy Defended (originally published in 1713 as The General Delusion of Christians) is a thoroughgoing apology for the miracles, signs, and wonders of the Christian past and of its followers, the so-called French Prophets, a small ecstatic movement in eighteenth-century England that traced its roots to the Montanists of the early church. In this retypeset editionan indispensable primary source on the movementJ. Ramsey Michaels establishes that John Lacy was the original author of The General Delusion of Christians. This edition includes the full text of the 1713 edition and Lacy's recently discovered and previously unknown marginalia, as well as the notes and preface of the 1832 edition of Scottish Presbyterian Edward Irving, whose own ministry was marked by ecstatic signs and wonders.

Book Description
"The biographical story of three Âordinary extraordinary men from China, Japan and the U.S. growing up and coming of age during the Great Depression, the Second World War and the Korean War. Each author gives us his unique perspective on the world events surrounding and shaping his life...the Cultural Revolution in China, the sexual revolution in the democracies, and the information revolution worldwide. The common threads binding these men are their humble backgrounds, resilience in the face of adversity, thirst for knowledge, drive, ambition, sense of humor and serendipitous globetrotting career paths. Born within months of one another, their lives follow incredibly similar patterns, finally converging in the 90Â's as they are pulled together by their careers in media telecommunications. This book is a great read for anyone in sales or broadcasting, or with a passion for 20th century history and international cooperation."
ÂJames Christopher, Cox Radio, Atlanta, GA
"A riveting read, Intersect on the Media Information Highway is heart wrenching and at times hilarious, but shows how no matter where we come from, we can make a difference in the world."
ÂJohn Grabosky, Resident Artist, Lynn, MA
"Three diverse cultures, three unique men. Intersect on the Media Information Highway takes us on their personal journey through life...and what an experience it is. Three lives so different. Yet they meet...they Âintersect in the dynamic world of media and communication. Rich with authentic 20th century history, this book makes us realize that the world may not be so big after all. YouÂ'll want to read it again and again."
