Book Description
The authors combine to produce a work that addresses some of the most pressing issues in athletics today. While the book focuses primarily on steroid and supplement abuse, it also covers unethical practices on the part of some coaches and athletes to gain a competitive edge. Finally, it offers healthy alternatives to supplements for athletes wishing to gain size and strength without putting their future health at risk.
Customer Reviews:
A Reality Check on Modern Day Sports .......2006-02-26
Although it would take a naïve person to believe that steroid abuse is not prevalent in sports, this preeminent novel highlights scandals and stories that have plagued the purity of sports. When Winning Cost too Much goes into detail about the negative affects of steroid abuse and how it is changing the nature of sports. Sports figures are idolized by society, but how can we idolize athletes that "cheat the system." Do we encourage our children to cheat on their math tests? This is a great book, that will have you questioning modern day sports.
The Cost of War and Love is High, Too HIgh........2005-09-10
This book is about winning at all costs in the sports world. Rampant use of drugs and steroids to enhance performances from Olympics to individual games show the decline in the sports ofr sports sake mentality. Two of my sons played sports as youngsters and high school athletes. The other was the best lifeguard in Pulaski, and one used steroids. I, on the other hand, have had to use them twice for a stubborn ear infection which just won't ever go away.
Winning costs too much in all aspects of life. When we win, that means that someone else loses. Fighting for the sake of winning in marriage, work competition, other debates, and just living day-to-day takes its toll on our health. If we win, we get overly excited putting stress on the heart. If we lose, it also puts too much stress on the heart and I'm not talking about our heart-strings (romance). We all want to win at whatever we try. Here lately, I don't seem to be winning at any of my endeavors and, believe me, that hurts more than having a heart attack, At least, that's a fast way to go and the pain goes away.
We have brought up this generation to win or don't ever try again. In earlier eras, it was war which took its toll on our young men who were trained to win at all costs. War kills indiscriminately. But so does retaliation, resentment, hate, and being torn apart by strangers who need not inerfere in our lives in the first place. Today, everyone is a critic and set out to hurt feelings and make ourselves felt. Who cares whether you actually know the person you are flailing out at and hurting their feelings? That makes it impersonal. It makes the critic feel important and gets his venom out of his system onto an unsuspecting victim randomly chosen.
It is rewarding to win ball games, band competitions, debates, disagreements over things which are very important to you; it is hard to always be the loser. I try so hard, and yet fail to achieve the things I want to do to leave a legacy behind to be a contributing citizen and someone what made a difference in her hometown. Not having money makes it a hundredfold harder to win at issues, political and otherwise, but important all the same. We are overlooked because we don't have influence and money for lawyers to fight our battles for us. We're on our own and have to take responsibility for our stands in all walks of life.
Sure, it is fun and rewarding to be a winner. But we can't always do it and should never depend on drugs or others to take the blame for our failures. I failed as a mother, though God knows I tried to protect and teach my sons the way they should act according to Abou Ben Adhem whose legacy was theat God blessed him because he loved his fellowman. I may not love men per se, and I certainly don't even like women very much, but I strive to be fair and just in all of my dealings with those in power and the poor homeless I see everyday on the public buses and at the public library. Life is not fair. But it is what we make it. Strive for winning without scandal, or unjust criticism. It can be done, and God willing, I will survive to fight other battles and win a few along the way.

Original Curt Visca Book
Book Description
A San Francisco Chronicle bestseller: a veterinary behaviorist evokes James Herriot with these remarkable stories of distressed pets and their equally troubled owners.
With humor and compassion, renowned animal behaviorist Dr. Nicholas Dodman explores the complex emotional problems of troubled animals and their (often) equally distressed owners, creating a classic of animal literature, with stories as wise, and almost as human, as the lives of the animals they portray. Did you hear about the dog who always arranged exactly six pieces of kibble in buttonhole depressions in the couch before he could lie down? Or the cat who compulsively hoarded shiny objects? Fifteen years ago Dodman began studying the psychological maladies that afflict our pets, helping to launch a field of animal psychotherapy and psychopharmacology that suggests that animals' emotional problems are often as complex, heartrending, and treatable as those of their human counterparts. If Only They Could Speak, with thirteen true stories culled from Dr. Dodman's own practice, echoes the wisdom of writers like Elizabeth Marshall Thomas and Jane Goodall. The stories here are as wise, and almost as human, as the lives of the disturbed animals they portray. Animal Personality Assessment Guide included. 15 b/w photographs.
Customer Reviews:
The pit bull from hell?.......2007-05-05
I enjoyed "The Dog who Loved too Much" (which might have been better titled "the Dog Owner who Loved too Much") so I picked this book up for more engaging stories of animal behavior and problem resolutions. My interest was further piqued by the chapter heading, "The Pit Bull from Hell". As the owner of a 9 year old pit bull, I have to say that Mr Dodman does not really "get" pit bulls. It's probably because the people who tend to have pit bulls cannot afford fancy schmancy animal behaviorist sessions.
Mr Dodson seems to imply that aggression against people is something normal in pit bulls, just lying beneath the surface of even those "cupcake" pit bulls he mentions in passing. I have lived in a densely populated urban neighborhood where pit bulls are popular for over 30 years, and I have never felt threatened by any of the local pit bulls including those used for dog fighting. I have been menaced by rottweilers, a rott-GSD mutt, and GSD mixed breeds running off leash in a local park.
The author describes a somewhat naive young man who tries to adopt a pit bull at a shelter but is directed to a pit bull breeder (WHY? with so many pit bull puppies ending up in shelters everywhere!) The dog he acquired seemed to be a product of careless dog breeding, but we are told nothing of the breeder. The animal developed a decidedly atypical aggression towards adult humans, probably a genetic error compounded by the ignorant owner's lack of understanding of dominant dog behavior.
I'm surprised that Mr Dodson didn't take this opportunity to point out the extreme importance of training puppies not to exhibit food aggression, as I did with my little pit bull. Food aggression causes so many dangerous problems with dogs and people that every dog, not just pit bulls, should be trained to allow people to take his food, bone, or whatever away from him at any time. This is most easily done when the animal is very young! I think Mr Dodson needs to get out and meet some good pit bulls, those entertaining and loyal companions which will never find their way to an animal behaviorist.
I agree- Poor Writing and Ego Ruin It.......2006-07-13
As if we don't have enough to worry about in regards to the children of today being overmedicated...now our pets, too?! His solution to almost every problem was prescribing an antidepressant. Also, his writing of his patients' owners came across as very egotistical and condescending. Some of the stuff had merit, but it was the same thing any trainer or behaviorist would tell you to do...establish dominance, ignore bad behaviors and reward good, etc.
Excellent resource for dog behavior.......2005-08-07
Dr. Dodman is a world renowned animal psychiatrist and his and all of his books are great sources for information about understanding dogs and correcting bad behavior.
Poor Writing Gets in the Way.......2004-09-17
This should have been a fine book, but the author's stilted prose and misuse of words on every second page nearly ruined it for me. Dodman swings wildly from overly prim writing to embarrassingly slangy, a sure sign of a bad writer.
Oliver Sacks, please report to the Veterinary School!
James Herriott Returns.......2003-08-02
I picked this book up on a whim, since I own two neurotic miniature Dachshunds. I was captivated from the first paragraph of the preface. Dr. Dodman writes eloquently, with wit, compassion, and common sense about the pitfalls we fallible humans fall into when it comes to interacting with our beloved pets. Most importantly for me was the reassurance it gave that there are millions of dedicated animal-lovers who know that animals are not "just pets." They have feelings and emotional needs, too. Thank you, Dr. Dodman, for a wonderful read, and a confirmation that there lots of cherished doggies out there!!!

From the Publisher Did you hear about the dog who always arranged exactly six pieces of kibble in buttonhole depressions in the couch before he could lie down? Or the cat who compulsively hoarded shiny objects? In If Only They Could Speak, Dr. Nicholas H. Dodman, a renowned animal behaviorist, presents fourteen true stories about troubled pets and their distressed owners, revealing that the emotional problems of animals are often as complex, heartrending, and treatable as those of their human counterparts. Sadly, just fifteen years ago, euthanasia, which still today remains a so-called solution for millions of pets, was the only way to deal with a pet who was untrainable or unresponsive to human commands. A dog with a propensity to bite or a cat who constantly urinated indoors would have been sent to the proverbial pound, and almost always to a premature death. Dodman, believing that animal psychopharmacology could yield results as promising as those experienced by humans, began studying a wide array of psychological maladies that afflict pets, believing that careful drug use, be it Prozac, Valium, or newer psychiatric medications, could help save the lives of even the most profoundly troubled dogs and cats.

With characteristic humor, compassion, and a profound understanding of the way animals think and feel, Dodman explores how separation anxiety, jealousy, fear, and death all affect the lives of the animals he has treated.
Book Description
Often called the “king of roses,” Peter Beales is the world’s most acclaimed professional rose grower, and this book is the distillation of his 50 years of experience and knowledge into one essential volume. Within these handsomely illustrated pages is Beales’s unequalled advice on landscaping with roses as well as care and cultivation―all based upon his decades of experience breeding and selling the world’s finest roses.
There is a rose for every budget and every garden style, and this is the ideal book to use in selecting the perfect rose. Roses come in every size from miniatures just right for containers to the expansive climbing roses. The first part of the book explains the six different major groups of roses and profiles the best cultivars in each category. Peter Beales describes the best landscape uses for each rose, details their pros and cons, and describes their care. Interwoven throughout are his charming yet fascinating personal observations and reminiscences recalling experiences with roses, notable gardeners, and important breeders.
The last section of the book is an encyclopedic directory of roses that includes full color close-up pictures of each rose in full bloom, detailed descriptions, planting suggestions, hardiness factors, and information on care, cultivation, pests, and diseases. This sumptuously illustrated volume by Peter Beales will be the definitive guide to gardening with roses for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
A love affair with roses.......2005-04-15
Peter Beales is one of the most recognized names in the rose world and his previous book "Classic Roses" is still one of the best reference books for roses on the market. His latest, "Passion for Roses" is not a reference book but a good introduction to roses. In the first chapter, Beales writes about how his love affair with roses began and how it has progressed since he first discovered them as a teenager working in a nursery. He has traveled the world photographing roses and many of them are included here. He also remembers some of the most memorable gardens he has visted.
Subsequent chapters describe the different types of roses (species, old roses, modern roses, climbing roses, ramblers and scramblers, etc.) The last section of the book is an encyclopedic directory of roses mentioned in the book. The photographs are lovely and this is a beautiful book to browse through. However, if you are just looking for reference information about individual roses, then you would want to buy his "Classic Roses" instead.

She wants it read over and over!.......2006-09-21
My ten month old loves this book, and has for several months. The rhyming text is good, and the pictures are very colorful and highlighted with foil.
My son loves this book!!.......2006-01-28
I bought My mommy loves me and My daddy loves me at the same time. My 3 year old son loves both of these books. He reads it only with his mommy or daddy. He loves the pictures and has learned what mommy and him does vs. what the book does. When mommy has to go away or to work or to shopping according to the book, he has a better understanding of when I need to go out and leave him at home. He loves the books. I would recommend this book to all parents!

I am a birthmother.......2006-03-18
I am a birthmother whom order this book for my daughter whom I placed in a open adoption. This book helped me so much plus the author invites you change words to make it more personal for you or the adopted child. Good for birthmothers adopt children.
just what adoptive parents need.......2003-08-23
this book is short and to the point. very touching, without being sappy. i wish there were a boy's version as well, but we can ad-lib with what is here.
Answers cries.......2001-11-19
This book addresses the needs of adopted children who feel the pain of having lost their birthparents. They may "miss" them--which is really an expression of loss.
Written by an actual birthmother who gave up her child, the book tells adopted children that their birthparents loved them but could not care for them. The book speaks of the sacrifice and love involved in placing a child in another home, in terms that even small children "get."
For parents, the book also includes an article by Jeanne Warren Lindsay, "Talking with your Child about Adoption." It explains key points that parents should make when talking with their adopted children--they were born like everyone else, being adopted is normal and natural and it's forever. And of course, their birthparents did not "abandon" them, but loved them in the best way they could. Alyssa A. Lappen
A Story for an Adopted Child.......2000-03-29
Presents a best-case scenario for adoption; may not be appropriate for all adopted children,

We love Monster Mama.......2007-08-07
My kids (ages 3-7) all love this book. It has a great rhythm and after reading it regularly for five years, they still giggle through the entire book. Because of that, we have given this book to many friends who have loved it as much as us.
great book.......2007-01-16
I bought this because my son has been waking up scared of "things" in his room at night. He has been waking up a lot less lately, since we started reading this and another book. I really think this among other things has helped. It insinuates that monsters are scared of little boys and girls which is just what he needed to hear!! It is also very cute and makes monsters seem just like people!
Such a great book!.......2006-10-03
My little boy is 19 months old and this is one of his favorite bedtime stories. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the story makes us laugh every time we read it!
Geat book for kids.......2006-06-25
I loved this book and read it to my precious grandson, Connor. The book is written in rhyme and it is very sweet and interesting to kids.
One of my favorite books.......2006-03-04
This book is adorable...the story is wonderful and very funny and the illustrations are great. The story is in rhyming verse, which gives it a nice rhythm. I read this to my 2 year old daughter and it is truly one of our favorite books...I highly recommend it.
