Serious Nutrition.......2001-01-16
As much as people dont think that nutrition is important to the serious athlete, they are wrong. One of the keys unlocking your potential is what you put into your body. Before i had read this book, i had a few ideas/thoeries about what i put into my body and what foods i should eat and this book backed my ideas and gave me new ones. This book is one of my favorites, and serious athletes should follow it to a T.

Fundamentals for Success.......1999-12-29
Dr. Benardot's text, Nutrition for Serious Athletes, is essential for both coach and athlete. It lays out in clear and precise fashion what is required, with regard to nurtition, for athletic success. Crucial topics, for athletic success, that are comprehensively discussed include: proper nutrition, hydration, supplements, meals for anaerobic and aerobic activities, and timing of meals. What also adds to the immense value of the text is the massive index of food sources of essential nutrients located at the end of the book. If you want to achieve your best athletic results, i.e., to maximize and actualize your true athletic potential, then this text is for you. It will not only show you how to fuel your body for the particular athletic you are training for and competing in, but also help you to understand why you should be fueling your body in that particular maner. All in all, this is an excellant text for the athlete, coach, or even the individual who just wants to have a clear understanding of proper nutrition.
nutrtion for serious athletes.......1999-12-22
Best book I've read for the "semi serious" athlete. Although I don't compete anymore, I'm 74, I thought the info. for nourishing food and meals very helpful to me . Also,I never realized that hydrating after exercise was also important.
Fundametals for Sucess.......1999-12-08
Dan Benardot's book 'Nutrition for Serious Athletes' is a must for the coach or athltete who desires to cover every base when it comes to athletic performance. Fundamental topics discussed include proper nutrition, hydration, supplements, timming of meals, good diets/bad diets, and sport specific diets. But what also adds to the immense value of Dan Benardot's book is the excellant index of meal plans, and nutritional values of foods.
What is of great importance in gaining knowledge is the issue of authority. It is something that is very important to me, for there are many individuals who claim to actually know something about athletic performance, yet they lack proper training and education. It is clear that Dan Benardot is not one of those individuals. Not only does he have PhD and RD distinction, but the text is also clear, logical, insightful and based on scientific evidence.

The Starflight Handbook: A Pioneer's Guide to Interstellar Travel (Wiley Science Editions)
ASIN: 0471135615 |
Book Description
"Let the meek inherit the earth—the rest of us are going to the stars! Here's how it's going to be done." — Robert Zubrin
"These articles are not 'just science fiction.' They are things we can do—and with any luck at all, and vision and determination, we will." — Stanley Schmidt
Take off on a thrilling journey of space exploration and speculation—to the realm where science fiction becomes science fact—as leading writers, researchers, and astronautic engineers describe a not-too-distant future of interstellar travel and colonization. From cable cars that ride "skyhooks" into space to rockets that can refuel out of Martian air, from "terraforming" planets (a process that makes them habitable for human life) to faster-than-light propulsion systems, Islands in the Sky offers an astonishing collection of challenging—and plausible—ideas and proposals from the pages of Analog magazine. Brilliant and provocative, here is fun-filled reading for everyone interested in science, technology, and the future.
Customer Reviews:
a very mixed bag.......2002-03-10
I'm giving this five stars for the benefit of the chapters by Robert Zubrin and Martyn Fogg, which are ingenious and daringly original analyses of astronautic engineering and terraforming, respectively - each is the godfather of his field. The other material ranges from curiously quirky but not well-thought out (on terraforming Venus) to the kind of worthlessly unintelligent and uninteresting speculations you might expect to overhear from some goon at the bookstore but not to read in print (see the chapter on settling the Oort Cloud). This book was assembled as a "best of" selection from Analog; in a better world it would have been edited by the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, which would have known where to make the cutoff. Still, the good entries are fantastic enough to be well worth the purchase price.
Good book.......2001-09-25
This book is an excellent collection of essay by the leading producers of cool, far-out ideas alive today. Just reading it will expand your horizons and help you look at the final frontier in a new way.
Some of the essays, such as G. Harry Stine's on Single-Stage to Orbit spacecraft, are on near-term science and technology. Other essays, such as "Islands in the Sky," are longer-term and closer to science fiction. All are good.
My personal opinion is that the asteroids -- not the planets -- are the future of mankind, so the Mars-exploration essays by Zubrin et al. I found less enthralling. But you Mars fans out there NEED this book.
The essay, "The Economics of Interstellar Commerce" alone makes this book worth the cost.
Although I enjoyed John Lewis's _Mining the Sky_ more (simply because my bent is toward the asteroids), this book is better written and required reading. 4 stars.
A great book about what could be done........2001-02-27
The book deals with ideas about making space travel easy and colonizing space simple. The first few chapters deal with getting out of the gravity well we call Earth with known science and equipment. The next deal with using the resources that could be found on the Moon, Mars, Mercury and even the Oort Cloud (as well as planting a few colonies here and there)with the knowledge we have and the equipment we could have soon. After that is starts to get harder to picture doing all this projects with current technology. By chapter 8, for explain, we are dealing with terraforming and star engineering. Near the end of the book, starting with chapter 11 we are talking about interstellar space ships and the economices of interstellar commerce. But by than, you think all of it can be done! Each chapter helps to hold up the next one. For example, cheap, easy ways to get into space would cut the cost of space travel and allow for the next step which is exploring the planets and finding resources to help the next step.
excellent reading, but a little far fetched.......1999-09-07
Zubrin makes a very good example of how it could be done. The snag is, that he reaches so far in the future, that it is impossible to imagine it as anything else than science fiction. I would have prefered to have some ideas developed about the colonization of the outer solar system. On the other side, the section about Oort cloud settlements has been thrilling. All in all, it's a very good book and certainly worth the investment buying it.
An uplifting, optimistic view of our future in space.......1998-10-09
I found Islands in the Sky a very entertaining, enlightening and uplifting book to read. It boldly addresses a wide range of subjects dealing with space exploration and appears to come up with concrete answers! There is an underlying optimism in the whole book that given human ingenuity, anything is possible. This is a far cry from the many 'post-modern' books that crowd store bookshelves seeking to convince us that science is not the answer, that mankind is bad and its actions are always in conflict with the environemnt. This book speaks to those of us who believe that we are the masters of our universe.
Some chapters are too abstruse and perhaps only for the specialist, but most of the book is eminently readable. A must for every space enthusiast.

Customer Reviews:
A book more about process.......2007-01-10
Having seen the first Comikers book released for the US, I have to say this book has a much better layout. You're not going to get extremely specific tips in these books but you will see their method of madness in some steps. I also found the selection of chosen artists in this second volume much better than the first one. Shigeki Maeshima has become one of my favorite artists since I've seen his work on Dragonfly in the Robot Comic Anthology.
It's a great coffee table book in some aspects since the variety of artwork isn't typical anime illustrations and many of these artists actually idolize American Artists and incorporate it into their style.
A nice little tip to other illustrators or artists that want to do this for a living, please take special note of what tools these artists use in this book. They're not worried about the most up to date version of Painter, Photoshop or other trade name program. Many of them are versions behind and it just goes to show that it's more about the artist and not their tools.
Awesome book. Great price!.......2006-06-30
First a run-down of the artist's who are featured in this book-
Shigeki Maeshima, Tatsuyuki Tanaka, Waka Miyama, Lily Hoshino, Jeong Juno, Hyung-Tae Kim, Kuroboshi Kouhaku, Haccan, Kaouru Yukifuna, Shukei, Chen Shu-Fen & Pin-Fan, and Noa.
Ok that's it. Buy the book. The features and printing are EXCELLENT and to purchase a book of this quality directly from Japan (not including shipping) would cost at least $55.00.
The price point on this can't be beat.
Pick up Volume one also, if you don't already have it.
Book Description
Where else can you find such an incredible collection of 14 young comic, anime and manga artists willing to share the secrets of their techniques? Each artist includes a brief biography, the most representative work and a gallery of their best work with step-by-steps on how to create the work. The last chapter features a who's who in the industry or "Tree of Japanese Comickers" and information about the art materials used by each artist along with a glossary of terms unique to Japanese comic/anime illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Great visuals but misleading title.......2006-09-23
14 young talented artists showcase a brief selection of their works in different mediums. The books features mainly the anime/manga style, of which character design and/or fantasy theme is the key inspiration.
If you are planning to purchase this book 'cuz the title declares 'Draw anime & manga like Japan's hottest artists', and you are a beginner artist or step-by-step learner or plain want to copy the form exactly, be prepared for disappointment. This book may offer some insight to the artists working processes, but very general tutorials are given, it takes seasoned artists to be able to somewhat mimick the steps. Good for reference or if you wanna poke your nose about the 'how-to's... seriously which artist/designer will so willingly offer their trade secrets to the public? Of which, the glossary sometimes baffles me because the entries are either redundant or don't carry much interest.
However, I like this book, its a good reference for inspiration, especially for the various ways to experiment with the anime genre; as well as full colored graphics on glossy pages. Sadly there are no descriptions for the artworks done but oh well it is reasonable for the $16 price tag amazon.com offers I guess.
A Bit Of A Disappointment.......2006-09-08
An avid Manga and Anime fan, I'd do anything to be able to create beautiful Manga characters, or even practice the technique used to eventually create a more personal character style. I had hoped this book would sort of "take-me-by-the-hand" and teach me how to start sketching manga characters before anthing else. But, it's more or less copying rendering and coloring techniques.
the artwork published is neverthless impressive.
it good but its not for everyone.......2005-08-09
this has some beautiful art in it. it also has some ugly art.... if thats what you can call it. but it does show you each artist's technic if not how they did each peice. so if you like anima and photoshop look into it. oh, thats what you are doing? well i gave it 4 stars didnt i. maybe three.... but i have had a good day.
Excellent for expanding your skills.......2004-12-28
This book should be called "How to color like japanese artists". This book is VERY short and mostly very beautiful images. It is NOT NOT for newbies. This book is for people who know how to draw and color different mediums and want to refine their techniques or pick up new tricks. The multiple artists have very varied techniques in coloring via photoshop, painter, illustrator, watercolor, copic marker. These are NOT in depth tutorials. It is VERY useful if you want to compare your style to other artists and get inspiration.
Definately a keeper.......2003-11-23
This is great for the artist who already has a working knowledge of their own style, but needs a little help and inspiration to get their coloring and composition techniques down. Instead of trying to shove formulaic anime style down my throat, it exposed me to fourteen distinct styles and let me see the process of these artists, instead of urging me to draw and color exactly like them. It's only flaw is it assumes the reader already has a working knowledge of artist tools and programs - but it was probably aimed towards a serious student of art, not people that need help learning how big to make their anime-eyes, or how their cat girls should look. Oh, and another plus-side: No cat girls. Thank you!

Everything..... including the "Cat's Pajamas".......2001-07-31
This slim book is only 135 pages, but it is well illustrated and packed chock full with very useful information on the "what and why of cat behavior". I have had cats my entire life and found this book to be an excellent refresher on how to raise a well-mannered cat. This is an outstanding book for those new to the wonderful world of cats -- or for anyone who would appreciate a good refresher on these lovely, but sometimes-mysterious creatures. For those who truly love their cats, it is a "must read".

Book Description
This new edition of a regional classic has been completely revised, updated, and expanded to include many more facets of the joys and challenges of gardening in the maritime Pacific Northwest. Included are new plant discoveries and information on container gardening, design trends, community education and stewardship, and shoreline habitats. The authors offer comprehensive details for using native plants to transform any garden into a low-maintenance, water-wise paradise that utilizes the beauty of native plants and creates habitats for wildlife.
Customer Reviews:
Great advice for NW gardeners.......2006-11-03
Looking for a real look at the 'Nature of Natural Gardening' in the NW-then this is your book. In a very readable format, you are taken from what naturally grows here and why-then into how to enhance and embellish the natural flora and fauna. Regional references for geographic areas are given, so you can find your area defined. A truly wonderful book for those of us who appreciate what nature has provided for us to begin with and how to succeed with appropriate "revisions" that will flourish in these climatic conditions.
Thorough and thoughtful.......2004-03-08
This is a revised and updated version of a classic book about gardening with native plants in B.C and the Pacific Northwest. The writers, one with a strong belief in the role of native plants in ecological restoration, the other a botanist who spent 12 years as Assistant Curator in the Herbarium at the University of Victoria, have together produced the most useful book about the topic.
Written with the gardener in mind (and a gardener who might not initially be knowledgeable about, or committed to, gardening with native plants) this book is both readable and packed with precisely focussed information.
The book is in three parts. The first part, "Working with Native Plants" covers topics such as designing the garden, what to do about lawns, propagation and gardening for wildlife. I particularly liked the ideas for hedges - eliminating rows of pyramidal cedars and planting native deciduous shrubs. Even, dare I say it, a hedgerow of mixed native shrubs, which would make a more useful wildlife corridor.
The second section, "Plants and their Habitats" picks up the theme of plant communities and their cultural requirements, describing in detail forest, shoreline, mountain habitats, etc., and native plants that would grow well there and be valuable to wildlife. The third section is a regional source guide, suggesting sources for plants, further information and education in both Canada and the US. Throughout the book each chapter has plants lists and a generous reading list.
The writers, while offering a vast amount of information, are aware that many gardeners will want to move towards this kind of gardening gradually, and the book is full of suggestions for doing this. There are so many reasons for using native plants - for starters they maintain and restore our heritage of local plants and help sustain wildlife. But for those who wish their gardens to be avant garde the writers point out that native plant gardening is the leading edge of gardening today and that the focus is moving away from colour (bright beds of annuals) and towards more emphasis on form and texture. This book will help all Pacific Northwest gardeners have more trouble-free, ecologically responsible and leading edge gardens.

Packed with fine material.......2003-11-15
Gardeners in the Pacific Northwest have a fine revised, updated edition of April Pettinger and Brenda Costanzo's Native Plants In The Coastal Garden to enjoy: when first published in 1996, its focus on native plants was revolutionary and filled a need for basic information: this new edition includes updated facts. From using native plants in new ways to locating nurseries and designing a native garden, this is packed with fine material.
Customer Reviews:
Go native............1998-10-15
This book suggests lovely alternatives to the typical plants that we see so often now in most Northwest gardens. The author suggests many lovely native varieties that will make your garden every bit (perhaps more so) as beautiful than the more common imported varieties. Many nurseries now carry a pretty good selection of native plants. Leave behind what I call highway plants (you know, the ones you see planted by exits) and discover the beauty of Northwest natives!
