Quite Simply One of the best Mountain Reads Ever.......2005-04-06

This book is really a homage to the not so well known British Climber Moe Antoine... by itself that it not enough reason to buy this book, but the fact that it has some of best adventure stories, personal experiences, packed into tight chapters --- that certainly is a reason to buy this book and it is the reason it is withing the top 10 of all mountaineering books I have read.

Since first reading this book about 15years ago I can still remember the horrid story of Moe and Al sleeping on a wide ledge in Italian Alps... and the whole ledge simply dissapearing into space whilst they are sleeping..... I will not give away how they survived this one... it was however pure luck or fate.

There are also some real lighter gems in the book as well. The climb of the old fogers on the Old Man or Hoy where the corpulant Don Whillans well into his 50s shows the younger hands how it is done...

This book is a kind of tonic for Alvarez to deal with the loss from cancer (at a very young age) of his climbing friend Moe Antoine. In that sense the climbing stories are always framed against the background of larger issues, personal relationships, love, aging, and the prospect of sudden death -- all shot through with a wonderful humour. Yet there are times when reading this book that one is forced to put down the book momentarily and deal with the larger issues of life...

The book is slim and when you finish it you feel a sense of loss, like a journey that ended... why more people do not read this book I do not know...

No one can capture the spirit of a Jack Russell, in a photograph, like Marilyn Mackay-Smith. She pairs very appropriate (or humorous!) quotes with the amazing photos.

For anybody who loves the Jack Russell and can appreciate their terrier personality. I live in a multiple terrier home so seeing these pictures were like looking at my own funny dogs. I have tried to line up terriers for Christmas photos, but not with the success of Mrs. Mackay-Smith. Favorites have to be the JRTs at the piano, on the back of a blanketed, tinseled horse, and asleep (!!!) beneath Christmas stockings filled with dog biscuits. Mrs. Mackay-Smith, how did you manage that?! Thank you for publishing this delightful little book whose subjects remind me of my own beloved terriers.

This is a great book for any gardening endvor using organic means. This autor knows and understands planting for an enviroment that is both beautiful and harsh. I follow his inspiring garden methods using this book and his companion book.

One of the best gardening books I have ever read!.......2002-03-22

David Owens has written a real winner with this book! He tells us which plants will survive in our harsh desert environment and how to plant and take care of them. The book is easy to follow and I'm having good luck with all the trees and vegetables I have planted using his guidelines.

If you thought that gardening was not an option since you moved to the desert you need this book to show you the way!

Good tips...not only for Desert Gardeners.......2001-04-08

I live in Phoenix and have the opportunity of catching Dave Owens tips for gardening on Channel 3 on a weekly basis. Dave has so many tips for gardening that the only way to harness his knowledge is to purchase this book. I have come to find that these tips work not only for those of us living in the desert, but I pass them along to my Mother in Wyoming, and she has as much success as I do with them. Dave is an extremely knowledgable gardner and his book reflects that, the layout was very thought out and takes you step by step from the "what do I need", to "now I've got what I need, what do I do" stages. Bravo, Dave!
