A lot of good information but...........2007-03-26

I bought this book because it promised to have a lot of practical information gathered among many years of sailing experience.

It does have plenty of good knowledge, however, by the end of the book I was quite tired of the author's British "superiority" of knocking everything American. In fact I cannot name a single chapter that didn't include a disparaging remark about something American. It's unfortunate that the personal touch of the book is spoiled by such musings.

The navigation and electronics sections seem to be quite dated even though I have the latest (2005) edition. Apparently, not much was changed between the 2001 and 2005 editions.

The last thing to be aware of is that for the past 20 odd years the couple has "sailed" on a converted barge, and while this is still sailing, is outside of what most of us would consider the typical cruising sailboat.

With all of that in mind, the authors do convey a good amount of practical knowledge, especially in the first 6 chapters. Much of the information afterwards is anecdotal, common sense, or a bit out of date.

It's highly recommended for any who dream of a life on the water........2006-10-15

One couple dared to get out of the rat race and embark on a new life at sea: SELL UP AND SAIL: PURSUE THE DREAM was written to reveal this journey, and is now in its fifth updated edition, revised to include changes in navigation, electronics, communications and all the other practical details the would-be world sailor needs to know. Chapters provide all the 'how to' details needed, from handling people and pets to boat maintenance and repairs. It's highly recommended for any who dream of a life on the water.

Excellent Compendium of Cruising Stories and Advice.......2003-12-31

Bill and Laurel Cooper's book "Sell Up and Sail" is a source of excellent information and advice if you don't mind a little preaching and British humor. For me, the opinions add to the human element of the book. What I found most useful is the amount of practical information and detail that the authors provide. Too many authors cover subjects in such a broad and abstract manner as to be nearly worthless. The Coopers, however, discuss the experiences they've had, the lessons they've learned, and how to avoid the problems they faced. You might not agree with how they solved some situations, but you'll come away more knowledgeable. The Coopers' sailing was done on some fairly large boats (a 55 foot steel ketch and a 60 ton sailing barge), however, they go out of their way to discuss how their experiences apply/translate to smaller boats. I've no plans to cruise in anything larger than 40+ feet, but I still found this book extremely educational as well as entertaining.

Note that this is a pretty densely written book with a good deal of detail. If you prefer an equally broad treatment, but with less detail and an easier read, I'd recommend Walt Gleckler's "All About Crusing".

The essential brief guide.......2003-07-28

My husband and I've had a yacht for a few years now, but so far have only cruised up and down the Arabian Gulf. We intend to sell up and sail ourselves, and this book is a superb brief and humorous guide to doing it, with lots of hints; from how to persuade your partner to join you, what to store in your fridge, and how to deal with people, pets and pests. Also, the more serious elements such as dealing with entering strange lands. Plus it's an enjoyable read. We both laughed and enjoyed the discreet cynicism and escapism. Soul Mates?

We liked that both husband and wife contributed chapters about various subjects relevant to each's role. (You get to choose yours - do you want the engine room or the galley?) Lots of references were included, as well as useful agencies for the long-distance cruiser. We'll be making the space to squeeze this book aboard when we go.

Must read for those planning to sell up........2002-02-03

I don't know what the reviewer from Dover, NH read, but it wasn't this book. The Coopers go into great detail about what is involved in becoming a yachtie. They did it in 1976 on a 55' steel ketch, which was probably an easier time to do it, with much less regulation. Yes, it does have a UK bias (they are English after all). However, the latest edition (4th edition, 2000) is full of up-to-date, sensible and well thought out ideas and what a person needs to think about if planning this type of alternative lifestyle. Definitely a must read for the wanna-be yachtie!

There are better Books out there.......2002-01-22

This book has little to do with sailing and even less to do with selling anything. The author is highly opinionated and some times condescending toward people with different ideas, which is very distracting. The book is slanted towards the Mediterranean and Europe and is more an account on their experience from their travels. Which I might add is on a 60' steel barge, which was converted to a motor sailor. Some useful knowledge was gained by reading this book but there are far better books out there.

I bought this book when it first came out,Having taken up sailing 15yrs ago,and lived with a workaholic for 20yrs,I thought Yes just the book I need. It was brilliant reading,I could'nt put it down. My workaholic started to read it but yes you've guessed, did'nt finish it. What a pity!.

Just when you think you know all about reference resources, you are bound to learn something new in this book. For a beginner or an experienced person if you are looking for ways to reach different references , this book is great! I think it is worth every cent I paid for it... now looking to buy the second Volume.

As one pursuing a master's degree in Library Science, I was required to buy this book for my reference course. I have found it to be poorly written and organized and of little practical use. Someone out there must be able to know enough about reference techniques to write a more coherent and interesting text on the subject.

Embarrassing.......2006-02-01

This was used as a college textbook in my class, and to be blunt, I and several other classmates were shocked at the poor quality.

Spelling mistakes, poor grammar, etc. abound. If ever a book needed a good editor, this is the one!

It escapes with 2 stars instead of 1 because the patient reader and beginner Library Science student may be able to glean some helpful advice from the text. At the very least, it seems the late William A. Katz knew a thing or two about the subject of reference work. I have to believe there are MANY better resources on this subject however. If not, then someone needs to start writing, there's money to be made!

A waste of money.......2005-02-19

This book is terrible. I bought it for a class and by the end of the semester I was completely disgusted with it. It is full of errors: misspelled words, improper examples, inconsistencies in style and usage, and the like. It's hard to believe that this is the book's 8th edition! If you can ignore all of this then maybe you'll find some of the information useful. I'm not sure about its companion volume, I didn't bother reading it. All I know is that when I pay $120 for two thin books I expect far better quality than this.

The Literary Equivalent of Valium.......2005-02-03

One of the dullest, driest reference books I have ever been forced to read (vols. 1 and 2). When you hear "it reads like a doctoral thesis," this is what they mean.

Poor, poor students. All that money ($140 for both volumes) for such mental torture.

Tokyo Urban-hip Hop Culture is the artistic reference for you. The Authors go into depth describing the various looks popular in Japanese Hip-hop culture today. While this book describes fashions popular in Japan today, these costumes will be easily recognizable as popular in American amongst urban youth.

The best part is you do not need to be a fan of Manga to find this artistic reference book useful. In particular the discussion of clothing, jewelry and the way fabric folds is quite useful to the artist.

An excellent book for comic artists everywhere.

This book is designed for the small farmer to help create a marketplace for what they produce. It covers virtually every area that produce can be sold from direct marketing, farmers markets, CSA's, and restaurant sales to name a few. He lists the advantages and disadvantages of most plans in detail. He covers how to display signs and produce in the most appealing manner. Of particular interest to me was his discussion of "value added" products. There is an excellent Resource Section at the end of the book with a multitude of organizations that are sources of information. This is a must-have in the home library!

Very Informative As Far As It Goes...But More Detail Needed.......2007-01-26

An Apple repair manual for desktops and portables printed by Apple? I couldn't believe it when I saw it on Amazon; so, I had to order it!

All the essential information for user upgradeable components is covered in great detail with pictures. There are trouble shooting procedures for each recent Apple desktop and portable. When my iBook refused to boot, I diagnosed the need for a logic board upgrade using the book. (I was 99% sure of the problem before since I had a similar issue on a refurb iBook a year or so prior, but I digress...)

Detailed procedures are provided for all the steps up to the point but not including the instructions needed to remove the logic board. (This is true for each model, not just the iBook.) When disassembling and re-assembling the iBook, it is very important that these instructions be followed exactly and the correct screws used for each hole. Failure to put the correct screw type in the proper hole can (and will) damage the iBook logic board, optical drive, and other components. (I almost learned this the hard way, and I don't recall seeing this warning in the book!) I was able to install my own logic board by carefully marking each screw with its location on a set of diagrams I drew. This took extra time, but it saved me from breaking another component. Also, make sure that you attach the heat sink correctly with the proper heat conducting tape.

It would have been nice to expand coverage to include removal and installation of logic boards. This would greatly expand the number of pages of the book, possibly making it unwieldy. Perhaps this should have been two books? one for desktops and one for portables?

Very usefull tool to have in your mac repair kit.......2006-02-01

I have relied on this book a few times now when repairing the older clamshell style ibooks and also some of the newer G3 and G4 white ibooks. It's got a pretty helpful guide for taking them apart and putting them back together. I have also used this book as a reference tool to determine what configurations various Macs I am selling or working on had when they were first introduced. For example I sold my G4 powermac sawtooth and wanted to know exactly what specifications it had, so I looked in the book and found the 500 mhz powermac G4 (gigabit ethernet) and found it was released in 2000, it also showed the cache, number of memory slots, expansion slots, basic stuff like that for a quick reference. And it covers all models of ibooks and powermacs, imacs, but not all powerbooks unfortunately. It does not have any info on the pismos, lombards or wallstreets powerbooks or any older macs. That would be the only draw-back, I wish it had some information on the G3 powerbooks. It also has chapter tests at the end of each chapter, that are unfortunately pretty basic simple questions. Great big useful book for any mac tech or just plain apple computer users who want a little more info on their computer.

Great Apple Hardware Manual.......2005-01-07

This book is part of the AppleCare training curriculum, designed to be a training manual for people who want to get certified by Apple to be an AppleCare-certified technician. As such, each chapter in the book is a Lesson. Early lessons cover topices such as "General Troubleshooting Theory," and "Safe Working Procedures and General Maintenance."

Lessons 5 through 10 cover common hardware and technologies, including basic computer theory , underlying technologies, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), cathode-ray tubes (CRTs), wired networking and wireless networking.

If you are a person who likes to do your own upgrading and maintenance of your Mac, you'll find this book very helpful. Likewise, if you want to make your living taking apart Macs and replacing parts as repair or upgrade.

This book does not cover Operating Systems. If you want to solve a problem in OS 9 or OS X, you need a different book. But, if you want to see the "Take-Aparts" for certain Mac models, including iMacs, iBooks, mini-towers and PowerBooks, this is for you. Both CRT-based and Flat-Panel based computers are covered.

There is a good section on how to search the AppleCare knowledge base, and doing advanced searches. They recommend you bookmark Apple Knowledge Base document 75178, as it gives good info on how to use keywords to search the Knowledge Base. And another section on locating Apple replacement parts.

The main reason this book has over 800 pages is the copious amount of photos. They support the step-by -step instructions for installing or replacing hard drives, optical drives, RAM, Airport Cards, etc.

I'm glad I got this book, as it will be useful when I want to upgrade the hard drive on our G4 flat-panel iMac and add a second hard drive to my G5 desktop.

Apple states in the beginning of the book, "Whether you are an experienced technician or someone who just wants to dig deep into a Macintosh, you'll find in-depth technical service information as well as a comprenhensive overview of the service tools and procedures used by AppleCare-certified technicians to diagnose, upgrade and maintain Macintosh computers."

Everything in one Book.......2004-11-27

Apple makes it very simple. If you are not certified by Apple and you do almost anything inside of an Apple computer and the warranty is void. This is the book that Apple uses in their certification classes for desktop and portable systems.

Apple has integrated their service effort and procedures together just as well as they did their hardware. So part of this manual is how to use their on-line service aids as well as the software tools that they have produced to aid the service technician.

There are some distinct advantages to Apple's approach of having one vendor for the whole system. The motherboards, for instance, are all designed around common design criteria, common interface structure, and specialized to operate with common software. Common service techniques are another advantage. Here in one book everything can be covered from wireless lan to displays to motherboards. Compared with the PC where everything might be from a different vendor, you only need one book. And for service, this is it.

Finally - Real Apple Certification Books!.......2004-07-06

This book (along with books for Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist, Apple Certified Technical Coordinator, and Apple Certified Systems Administrator) has been sorely needed for the past few years. The book is a big one -- chock full of well written information and excellent illustrations.

I suggest purchasing the $299 technical training kit from Apple as well as this book (the web materials, available through the kit, are referrenced often and are helpful during many exercises). All in all, good book if you want to become ACDT and/or ACPT.

I bought the first edition of this book when it came out, and I just bought this copy of the second edition because I wanted it.
This book is an extremely valuable reference book. If you follow the pricniples set forth in this book, your documents will look professional.
Robin Williams if the premier author of Macintosh books, and of books on design. All of her works are more than worth the price.

I'm reminded of Shunk and White's "Elements of Style". Short, correct, and invaluable. That's what Robin William's book is for people who care about the look of their written word on a computer. It's easy to make your work look professional and "The Mac is Not a Typewriter" shows you how.

For first time mac users, this book is a must! It has great pointers and tips to understand some things most people don't know. It shows you differences in symbols, and shows you key commands that are useful and helpful. I learned a lot from this book.

I am so glad this book is still around! I had forgotten what a great, useful, overview of basic typographic principles this "little gem" is.

I teach a Graphic Design class for non-Graphic Design majors in an art college. I was stunned to see most of the students putting two spaces after periods in a book they were making in my class. I explained why this was uneccessary (and in fact wrong) with most typefaces available on the computer, and they said they had all learned this in computer classes in the various high schools they had attended.

I unearthed my copy of this book (from 1990!) and brought it in the next week. Some students went to Amazon right away and bought it. Their work improved markedly.

I will make this a required text for the class next year, and advise anyone looking to learn the basics of good, typographic layout to purchase this wonderful little book.

Must Have Book.......2006-02-07

This is a must have easy to read book that Mac users should have in their library. It provides helpful tips on how to make your designs look professional and help out with the work flow.
