A much needed guide, but . . ........2001-10-28

Dennis has done what a lot of folks have thought about doing, but never quite gotten around to it - a comprehensive guide to the state of New Mexico (Texas is in there, too, but I haven't climbed there, so can't judge that part). It is a very useful book for those of us who live and climb in NM, but as might be expected of a first effort, is incomplete and inaccurate for many areas. Still, having some information is a lot better than having none, so I recommend buying it. Hopefully Dennis will proceed with a second edition, but I doubt it, because there is a limited market, and it's a huge amount of work.

Having put up hundreds of routes in New Mexico, I was expecting this book to be an updated collection of all the new routes that have been going in in New Mexico. It's not. It's a collection of routes from very old sources. Let's hope Walt Wehner or Luke Laeser get their guides done soon!!

I was very disappointed in this book. The Dichos have been sanitized and there are numerous mis-translations. Dichos as a rule are rather earthy.

In what is described as "a delightful mixture of laughter and love, fatalism and fate", the author has gathered priceless Mexican proverbs in this small book, capturing "the wisdom, spirit and vibrancy that is Mexico". A proverb may inform, advise or make a point; it is amusing and wise; it is by turns soothing and judgmental: "It is the unwritten literature and philosophy of the poor, particularly rural folk."

Passed from generation to generation, these proverbs have European roots, but regional applications in common usage, distilled cultural truths that provide the wisdom of centuries. In a bilingual format, the reader can compare the English and the Spanish, the pages illustrated with bright prints that feature the folk art style of Mexico, frogs on a lily pad, a pig, a great sleeping bull, a man grappling with the Grim Reaper on the Day of the Dead.

Small in size large in wisdom.......2001-04-08

This is a concise choice collection of dichos or sayings that are like folk proverbs. Known a dichos, these are various small sayings that carry a lot of wisdom in their delivery. Reflective of Mexican cultural values, the dichos are expressive manipulations of language, creative rhythms and reasons for life and its complexities. One can hardly turn a page without laughing or at times scratching your head in the simplicity and yet profound sayings. Given to me as a gift recently, this book is a fun read. My only complaint is I wish it were longer and had more dichos. It is geared for a younger reader in my estimation but the universal themes have the wisdom of an ageless appeal. The drawing or paintings are numerous and very colorful and attractive further revealing the dichos. Based in the oral tradition of tales, the dichos cover a variety of subjects including love, money and politics amongst others, offering insights and wisdom for the reader. A simple read , it can be shared or read alone but regardless can be read in the time span of your average tv show. Now there's a concept, read something insightful intead of watching a not so funny sitcom!! The forward is written by noted writer and poet Gary Soto and the translations are loose, not literal. The idea is to catch some of the flavor of the original. A collection of dichos always has one you might not have possibly heard. A bilingual edition, my favorite newest dicho discovery is "La amistad sincera es uns alma repartida en dos cuerpos/True friendship is one soul shared by two bodies", just beautiful and quite fitting if you know what I mean. Very enjoyable and worth the small price every child, young or old can enjoy the flavor of old Mexico in our modern times. Recommended for teachers, parents and all who enjoy sayings that are short and insightful glimpses into human nature.

"Free L.A., The Ultimate Free Fun Guide to the City of Angels" contains more free things to do in L.A. than one can count! Over 250 pages of events and attractions are presented with details and contact information (many with websites).

The book begins with monthly Annual Events so you can plan what to do whenever you visit. You'll learn how to attend the January 1 Tournament of Roses Parade for free, complete with parking instructions. On the first two Saturdays in February, your family can enjoy the Pan African Film and Arts Festival Children's Festival at Magic Johnson Theatres. And, in July, there's the Courtyard Kid's Festival at the Japanese American National Museum.

There's another section with Holiday Events, which kicks off with the Chinese New Year's Festival in Chinatown as the first of several New Year's Celebrations. Other holidays which have dedicated sections include Earth Day, Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, Halloween and Winter Holidays.

There is also an "Extra Events" section, which features free Concerts, Films, Gardening and more.

...and I loved this book. Sorry, but a Google is just not the same. This book mentions places I didn't know existed so I would know to Google them! (LA is a very big place. ) And it gives nitty-gritty secrets about each (especially the free days!) that many sites don't give. I keep it on my desktop right along with my writing references. It's saved me way more than the cost of the book.

Free L.A. is an event guide rather than a travel guide per se, so tourists seeking a broader wealth of information concerning hotels, restaurants, etc. will want to supplement it with a more well-rounded guidebook. Free L.A. is a travel, entertainment and tourist guide especially for the budget-conscious - since all the events, activities, and things to do it lists in the City of Angels are free! Free festivals, museums, historic landmarks, botanical gardens, tours, concerts, art events, films, holiday celebrations and more pack this suprisingly thick little book. Arranged by month and season, each listed event includes an applicable phone number or website, a brief description, parking notes, information on whether the event is kid-friendly or has wheelchair/stroller access, and more. A superb introduction to Los Angeles travel and fun, and also an excellent resource for L.A. natives looking to enjoy themselves.

A Guide to a Year of Fun in L.A. .......2004-08-02

No matter what time of year you decide to go to L.A., there is something fun happening and it might just be free. Most of the events listed in this book are free to the public because they are funded through government grants, corporate sponsorships, non-profit groups and individual donations. If you want, you can make a donation at various locations.

The items in this book are listed from January to December. The dates may be subject to change, so it is advisable to check the website for current information.

Some of the Fun Free Adventures Include:

A LA Harbor Tour that leaves every 20-60 minutes. Take a tour in an open-air tour boat.
Central Avenue Jazz Festival - dine on ethnic cuisine while you listen to music
Summer Concerts in the Park - evenings of music in July and August

There is also information for every interest. If you love gardening, there are many beautiful gardens to visit. You might even enjoy volunteering to help decorate a float for the Tournament of Roses Parade. I saw one of the floats up close and they are pretty amazing. I wondered who had all that time on their hands, and now we know. You can sign up to volunteer through a special website.

I bought three books on roses, this is the least favorite although I plan to keep in for reference. Nice pictures but it doesn't have a lot of detail on any subject. You get a taste of many things but it left me wanting more.

Beautiful photos but not a complete reference.......2003-10-02

This slim volume (160 pages) is filled with gorgeous photos and is a great picture book for people who wish to get acquainted with roses but it is not very helpful for an advanced rose lover seeking information about individual types of roses. Sections are divided by rose classifications (Albas, Bourbons, Gallicas, etc.) and includes a very small listing of roses in each class (usually less than 10) and only offers a brief (usually one sentence) description. Chapters in the back of the book show how to care for roses (planting, pruning, etc.), arrange roses and dry roses. Overall, a good introduction to roses but by no means a guide for selection. I would have left out the "ultimate" in the title!

Ultimate Pleasure.......2002-07-20

It is indeed an ultimate pleasure to look at the beautiful pictures of the American Rose Society's book the Ultimate Rose. It is clear looking through the book why the rose throughout the ages has seemed to hook and entice so many individuals into growing and breeding them.

The book is well organized with chapters on history, classification, growing, arranging and drying. Each section important and necessary for a book about roses.

The largest portion of the book is dedicated to the classification of roses with a description and history of each type of rose as perpetual, Bourbon, hybrid tea or other and numerous pictures of roses representing each type of rose. The pictures are exquisite. I look through the book and dream of more roses I could have and try to imagine where on my tiny plot I could plant one more. With each picture is a brief description as follows for the grandiflora rose "Queen Elizabeth", "The first to be classed as a grandiflora, this rose has won many top awards through the world"

As would be expected from a Rose Society book the chapter on growing roses is very useful and informative. Here the pictures help to illustrate techniques as pruning and planting roses. This chapter describes how to choose roses to purchases, proper planting techniques, maintenance, pest control and pruning.

For those of us with a rose habit, we not only want to grow them, arrange them, but learn everything we can about them. If you are starting a rose library this is one which should be included. It is simply a nice coffee table book to browse through and admire the photos, rose grower or not, it may induce you to begin planting roses.

A great gift for the roselover..........2001-07-23

This book has beautiful full color photraphs and discusses roses by species. If I were going to try to create a new cross- this book would be helpful. The chapter go into the histories of the different roses... By far the best part of this book.... Has to be the PICTURES!

Not a single source book/ this is a book that should supplement your library of ROSES.

Ultimate Rose.......2000-07-23

This book is a must have for any rose enthusiast.

Much will be said about the dazzling color photography and it is the best I've ever seen. However, its chief virtue is organization and thoroughness.

Each classification is represented in order of development, accompanied by its history and tips on care and use. Even half forgotten old timers like Ayrshire and Boursalt get a nod.

It concludes with excellent advice from choosing a site to dry arranging.

There's only one fault with this book - it's too brief.
