Basketball legend Thompson tells his inspiring life story, chronicling his rise, fall, and incredible recovery from the drug and alcohol abuse that ended his NBA Hall of Fame playing career.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Skywalker soars.......2006-02-08

David Thompson was a great basketball player in college and had a great start in his pro career. Unfortunately, David gave in to the lure of drugs and his career and life suffered. Somehow, through his belief in God and his love of family, David was able to eventually overcome his demons. His rebound was too late for his basketball career, but not too late to save his marriage.
David is very clear in discussing his problems. He makes no excuses. His love for his God and his wife are also very clear, as he credits both with saving his life and sticking with him.
His review of the important 1974 NC State-UCLA semi-final game was very detailed and fascinating. I know he could not do that with every game or even every important game, yet still I would have liked more detail about his interactions with teammates and coaches. At times, this book was more about his redemption (which is more important in the grand scheme of things), than his basketball career, but a few more stories would have rounded out the book. He did play with some greats of the game and in the ABA. Surely he could have pulled out a few more stories.
Even with this one complaint, the book is well worth reading. David Thompson may have ended up being a better person than he was a basketball player!

5 out of 5 stars David Thompson: Skywalker.......2004-12-29

Enjoyed this look into the life of David Thompson, both the good, the bad the really bad and the good again. The chapter recalling the 1974 NC State/UCLA semi-final game was so detailed, it was like watching it all over again. Additionally, the book did not shy away from the dark side of David Thompson's life and although he may have not fulfilled his full professional basketball potential, it is gratifying to see his life is now at peace. Not just for hoops fans, but hoops fans will throughly enjoy !

4 out of 5 stars Skywalker comes down-to-earth..........2004-08-28

The essence of David Thompson's impact on the NBA and it's fans is captured in the following memory...a playoff game in 1980 with Thompson's Denver Nuggets playing the Seattle Supersonics in the Seattle Kingdome...the game was in it's closing minutes and the outcome was no longer in doubt (Seattle had the game well in hand). Most TV viewers (especially those of us on the East Coast) had already undoubtedly turned off the TV, but I noticed that DT was still in the game. Telling myself to keep watching as Thompson may do something memorable, I kept my attention focused until with about 30 seconds remaining, DT had the ball at the top of the key. Faking left and driving right, he took off from just inside the dotted circle...cuffing the ball in his right hand (at 6' 4" his hands were too small to palm the ball), he sailed in and threw down a one-handed windmill tomahawk slam over two amazed Sonics that brought me and the remaining crowd in the Kingdome to it's feet. My mission then complete, I felt it was safe to then turn off the TV and go to bed.

It was with these type of memories that I obtained a copy of Skywalker...I needed to know how this mega-talented legend fell so far. What I got and what other readers of this work will get is a completely honest mea-culpa...straight forward and with no excuses Thompson explains his rise from a shy teenager just discovering that an amazing leaping ability could lead to superstardom to his equally amazing fall from that lofty position. He explains his addictions and insecurities and how these affected him and those he cared about...all culminating with a remarkable recovery topped-off with his induction into the NBA Hall of Fame in 1996. Along the way we also get a first hand account of the building of the legend and an inside look at the 1970's and 80's NBA...the legendary players and unfortunately the legendary drug use.

DT became a nationally known superstar in the early 70's of course as a member of the National Champion North Carolina State Wolfpack...the team that essentially unseated the mighty UCLA Bruins of John Wooden and Bill Walton (who pens an excellent forward to this book). He shuns the NBA and instead becomes the star of the ABA's Denver Nuggets...further driving a wedge between the leagues that ultimately leads to the 1976 merger. Year after year Thompson sets the bar for "high-wire", above the rim ball (along with Julius Erving) that preceded Michael Jordan by over 10 years (Jordan admits that Thompson was his main boyhood idol). His career is full of legendary highlights such as the 1976 ABA Slam Dunk contest and culminates in 1979 with his end-of-season battle with George Gervin for the NBA scoring title. Scoring 73 points in the season ending game against the hapless Detroit Pistons, DT takes the lead in the race. Gervin plays that evening and knows exactly how many points he needs to score and breaks through with 63 points of his own against the equally hapless New Orleans Jazz winning the title and adding to his own legend as well.

As important as the basketball side, the personal side of Thompson's story is the strongest part of this work. Thompson's writing style certainly isn't Pulitzer worthy, but it's the force of his story and his uncompromising explanations of his personal problems that capture his audience and is what ultimately sells this book. Cocaine and alchohol drag him down and forces him out the league at a relatively young age...injuries also had much to do with it and he argues that the long term abuse may have led to them. A jail term (where he watches Erving's retirement from the NBA) and many re-hab visits force Thompson to consider building a better life and he becomes a born-again Christian. This is the avenue that ultimately leads to his recovery and Hall of Fame induction in 1996.

A strong read and an important one especially for young fans of the NBA, David Thompson has a strong message for all. Having been at the heights of fame and at the lowest of lows, DT's life takes on an important meaning...all fans and players should read this to see the fragile hold fame has on it's participants. I highly recommend this.

        5 out of 5 stars a Strong Read.......2004-01-02

David Thompson was Awesome Back in the day.Imagine DR.J,Jordan,Kobe&Vince Carter&with Madd Hoops that was David Thompson. if the NBA of Today was Allowed Back in the day then David Thompson would Be talked about the same way Lebron James&Kobe are today.same goes with DR J. this Book tackles His Whole Career from college,ABA&NBA&also Off the court.David Thompson is One of the Most Gifted Atheletes that I Ever saw as well.Props to Him always.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome book for any ACC hoops fan.......2003-12-03

This book tells the amazing story of the basketball protegy that goes to NC State, wins the NCAA championship, goes to the ABA and becomes the best player immediatly, then goes on to success in the NBA. Unfortunatly, drug use and a bad fall in a nightclub rob him of a MJ-like career. Now he has found God and cleaned himself up. A very inpsiring book.

By the way, he tells a story of how NC State was put on probation for his recruitment, and how UNC is to blame! Very juicy stuff.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable asset.......2006-10-07

"The Erotic Writer's Market Guide" is compiled by The Circlet Press Collective and is a compendium of listings of literally hundreds of paying markets for erotic writing. This unique and "user friendly" writer's reference also includes practical, step-by-step advice contributing by working professionals on how to not only write good erotica, but how to sell it and make a career in the genre. There is invaluable information on pay scales and pay rates, tax deduction tips, "writer's rights", notations on the difference between men's and women's erotic fiction, what the editors of erotic magazines and presses want to see in submitted material, and a great deal more. Anyone wanting to write professional in the specialized genre of erotic short stories and novels will find "The Erotic Writer's Market Guide" to be an indispensable asset and a core reference for marketing their work.

3 out of 5 stars Sorely Lacking but Very Much a Necessity.......2006-06-14

I was one of those eager writers signed up to pre-purchase this title long before it was published. Aside from going back and forth with Amazon about the continuously changing publication date, lack of information and updates for us buyers, and finally giving up on the opportunity to buy this unique offering all together, I was thrilled to hear that it had finally been published and is available for the masses. A published market guide for the erotica genre in book form? It never existed until now and has been sorely needed, which should make it a relative godsend for sex writers everywhere...

But it's not that miracle we've been hoping for.

The book touts being a project handed down from one dreamy-eyed associate at Circlet Press to another, until someone finally put it together. It shows. All of that time and separate authors didn't go into creating a comprehensive, well researched, completely detailed, and painstakingly accurate list of erotica markets. There are only 95 pages of actual market listings in the entire book, hardly enough pages to even be termed a "book," which may be why "the collective" added all the other junk in the remaining 145 pages between the covers.

The authors state in useless Chapter 1 that this "isn't a handbook on 'how to write a story'" and then proceeds through many chapters to tell you just how to do that. If you're completely new to the world of writing, in any genre, you'll appreciate knowing that tax deductions are available to writers in the US, how other authors choose their pen names, or being warned to develop a thick skin about rejection letters, but you won't get much else from the editorial content in this book. You'll even be laughing at advice like the recommendation to avoid distractions while writing, not threaten or bribe potential editors, and that you don't have to have experienced everything you want to write fiction about. The authors also go on and on about how sex writing should not be viewed as taboo and to let your inhibitions and hangups go as a writer so much that you begin to wonder if they still harbor these hangups about sex writing themselves. These lengthy chapters present more common information than common sense itself...just enough for a beginning writer to wonder "oh, I need to know about that?" and then not find the detailed information to actually help them through that aspect of the writing life. If you're looking for any information about the legalities, decisions, fears, business, marketing, etc. of writing itself, refer to the masses of OTHER books available on those subjects. And the authors here instruct you to do the same just before continuing to waste our time and take up way too much paper dabbing at different aspects of the writing life.

If you're buying this book for the listing of markets for your erotica, sex, and porn writing as I was, you'll find 5 pages of those e-Book publishers that just can't be avoided, 39 pages of magazines and periodicals (including e-zines), and 56 pages of book publishers. The list of markets is far from comprehensive or accurate. Comparing this book's list to the spreadsheet full of erotica markets I've created for myself as an author fully entrenched in the genre now, there is an alarming amount of missing potential markets for your work... large, obvious, long existing, better paying, and well known markets completely overlooked. And my list started from scratch barely a year ago. I also recognized several markets listed in the book that no longer exist, haven't existed for almost a year, and can be found out as such by a quick trip to their website, which posts that very notice or no longer exists at all.

Sure, markets change and publications and editors come and go like the wind, but why would the authors of The Erotic Writer's Market Guide bother to actually list defunct markets and pubs no longer in circulation, even including their own speculation and personal comments, and not verify the accuracy of their own listings by even a quick check of the current status of a market's website? The listing for Playgirl magazine alone is TWO editors behind in accuracy and incorrect in payment amount. Where I know full guidelines are available for markets, they're not included here. You still have to send off for guidelines (but you always should to maintain completely accurate info) yourself. Also beware of all the non-paying markets listed here, not exactly what you wanted to pay the book price to find and not even including those truly beneficial non-paying markets that continue to result in lots of fans, feedback, and visitors forwarded to our own sites for those of us in the genre who've benefited from working them in among our paying market submissions.

The resources section at the back of the book is just as incomplete...just astonishing considering the authors of this book are supposedly working authors and editors in the erotica genre themselves. If I was able to discover the markets, organizations, market listing resources, etc. all by myself over the last year, "the collective" should've been able to list them in their book. Maybe these authors should've taken the time to send out a mass inquiry to existing erotica writers, editors, and publishers and asked them to share their own personal collections of markets to form a true and very valuable listing... or at least inquired with the members of the Erotica Readers & Writers association. And perhaps then this first market guide for this wonderful genre wouldn't reflect so badly on the genre itself, as it currently encourages the perception that erotica isn't anything to take seriously, there are few serious markets for it, and erotica writers don't have quite the skillset or professionalism of writers focusing their efforts in mainstream genres. (The authors and editors at work here couldn't even place page breaks in the right places to ensure all the information regarding one market was kept together and easy to use and refer to...you'll find a title of a publication at the bottom of one page and have to turn the page to read the details about it.)

All in all, this is not the comprehensive and accurate resource for erotica markets it should be, can be, or that you're expecting. It has large, numerous, embarassing holes in it. BUT it is still the only collective listing of its kind, a tool that will hopefully evolve over time and become, for the erotica genre, what other listings are for mainstream markets. And there are a few markets listed here that I hadn't found myself, which is like gold in this genre where markets are hard to find, not always paying, and exist only in small numbers. And that alone makes purchasing this book worth the money and the time I spent laughing at it; it'll pay for itself in the very first short story I sell to a new market.

Is this book all that it could've easily been and all that we writers need or expect it to be? No. Is it still an indispensable tool and a must-buy for writers of erotica, porn, and sex in fiction or non-fiction? Absolutely.

And hopefully any future edition of The Erotic Writer's Market Guide will solicit the input and incorporate the knowledge of a larger circle of writers actively working in the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Wide range of imagery from this culture.......2007-10-11

it was a pleasure to see imagery from MANY different realms of art sources - especially those done in stone. It was also an eye-opening experience for me to see images placed in Ancient Mexico culture art category, when I once thought were Native American art but REALLY is Mexican art (especially as I have the Southwest & Native American Dover Design books to use as comparison). The variety in image sizes was also nice since it gave me the opportunity to easily capture an image or two from the large sketch in the book derived from a huge wall painting in Mexico. An all-around classic cultural art book.

        1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-06-16

The cd did not work (and I tried it on several computers), and the images in the book are not as clear as I would have expected. It was a good idea, but the quality of the product leaves much to be desired.

4 out of 5 stars A few images from many peoples of Ancient Mexico.......2005-03-23

The book includes 3 well-known designs: the Aztec Calendar Stone, the "Tablet of the Slaves" from the Mayan Palenque ruins, and the king's sarcophagus also from Palenque. The book also includes designs from other Ancient Mexican cultures: Mixtec, Zapotec, and Olmec. Yet, it primarily concentrates on Aztec and Mayan images. Each image is numbered, so that it can be easily found on the accompanying CD-ROM.

The book delivers exactly what it promised, so normally I would give it 5 stars. However, the images are not well-organized by culture or chronology; they are simply scattered throughout the book. Nor is the cultural heritage for all images specifically noted. For these reasons, I have downgraded my rating to a 4.

I strongly suspect that Mr. Harvey Duke still has a lot of his own books to sell and has sent one of his henchmen to "stir the pot". FOR SHAME!!

1 out of 5 stars Another Very Disappointed Customer.......2001-02-15

The book is awful. The color pictures are awful; so much for professional photography. Poorly-written text. "I have to wonder if the author and his partner have set the prices to reflect their current inventory as they are also dealers of Stangl & Fulper potteries," said it best. Don't waste your money on this or any other Runge book that may be promoted. In it for themselves.

This is just the best book ever on the subject, great photos, unbelieveable color. Very thorough history chapter, obviously written by someone who truly knows his subject and loves it. I am of the understanding that 100% of proceeds from the sale of the book provided the funds necessary for the Runges to establish the Stangl Pottery museum in Flemington. Fantastic book, fantastic people!!! When's book 2?

Excellent Book, will take it faithfully to antique shows and malls. Lots of great information and the photos are outstanding. I'm glad to finally have a guide book that's helpful, informative and expertly written.

            Book Description

Most gardeners know how rewarding it is to harvest ripe, sun-warmed tomatoes or pungent herbs straight from the garden. But those pleasures can be multiplied a hundredfold by creating a garden that is not only productive, but also a beautiful, well-integrated part of the home landscape. In this handsome volume, Jennifer Bartley shows how the traditional features of the classic kitchen garden, or potager, can be adapted to contemporary American needs and conditions. The book is informed by her conviction that the nurturing, preparing, and eating of fresh, home-grown vegetables contributes enormously both to our ties with the natural world and our ties to each other. Copiously illustrated with photographs and with the author's delightful watercolors, Designing the New Kitchen Garden offers the perfect blend of inspiration and practical guidance.

At last returning to print, Give Me My Father's Body is the thought-provoking tale of Minik, a young Inuit boy brought to New York by Robert Peary around the turn of the 20th century. Told simply and interspersed with personal letters and newspaper clippings, the book examines Minik's life both as a cross-cultural meeting place and a deeply personal search for a place to call "home." Photographs throughout of Minik give a glimpse into the incredible differences between the multiple worlds he inhabited, and how impossible it must have been to live in these worlds successfully. The title derives from one of Minik's more harrowing experiences--finding his father's bones displayed in a natural-history museum as a "curiosity"--and his attempts to retrieve the bones for a more respectful burial. Author Kenn Harper, while including many facts and articles about Arctic exploration, refrains from sharing opinions about the various explorers or their methods, choosing to share this story--and his years of research--plainly. From the death of Minik's birth father to the financial ruin of his American foster family, the events of Minik's childhood seem like one disaster after another, and his adulthood--the successful return to Greenland, followed by disappointment and a subsequent return to New York--is an unhappy struggle to find some kind of personal fulfillment. Questions of racial and cultural differences make an inescapable larger framework for Minik's life, and the emotions brought forward in answering those questions make reading this book a powerful experience. --Jill Lightner

                                Book Description

In 1897, American explorer Robert Peary brought Minik Wallace, a young Polar Eskimo, from northwestern Greenland to New York. During his 12 years in America, Minik's adoptive family went from riches to rags, and Minik's own life was shattered by the traumatic discovery of his father's skeleton on display in the American Museum of Natural History. Sent back to Greenland in 1909, Minik had to relearn his native language and hunting skills to survive. Told here for the first time, this dark chapter from the golden age of Polar expedition is based on original research in Greenland, Denmark, and the U.S.

4 out of 5 stars Minik Of The North.......2005-11-23

Poor Minik, captured by white traders and brought to Manhattan to be a freak! It was the age of freaks, when everyone who was different was first taken away from their home, and then put on display. Minik found out that his beloved father had been stuffed and mounted for all to jeer at the New York Museum of Natural History.

Author Harper has been through the files of the Museum and what he has come up with will convince even people who love the Museum, that reparations are in order. Eskimo people are not the only ones outraged at the long ago disposition of native relics. It is still worthy of outrage. What puzzles me is actor Kevin Spacey's interest in this affair. His preface to the book is well-written, not that I believe he actually put pen to paper to write it up, but clearly he has an emotional investment in this material and, from what I understand, he is planning to play Minik himself once his duties as Lex Luthor are finished in the new Superman movie. But why not let a native actor play the part? My in-laws who know Kenn Harper by reputation, and who have seen him speak in public, say that Spacey is part Inuit and hgas had a long interest in Peary's expeditions.

Peary himself emerges from Harper's well-researched book as a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand he showed true courage in surmounting obstacles and sub zero temperatures. On the other hand he was not particular gifted in solving human personnel difficulties, and seems to have grown impatient if his will was crossed by others (or by the hand of God). We have all known men like Peary--impetuous, self-assured, and gifted. But few of us have known the crushing tragedy of Minik of Qaanaaq, of Greenland's icy shores.

                                5 out of 5 stars Minik.......2005-07-09

This book is a must-read. The reader must come into it ready to make his or her own conclusions about the material, though, as it is written to persuade a certain viewpoint. With no other viewpoints offered to compare this one to, it is difficult to say for certain if this one is correct. The story is one that anyone interested in humanity, globalization, anthropology or just an interesting story should read.

4 out of 5 stars Slight annoyances didn't ruin the book.......2003-12-11

Kenn Harper's Give Me My Father's Body is undeniably and superbly researched; easily the book's crowning achievement. Occasionally though, I was annoyed with the "what if" scenarios. At least twice in the book Harper says what would have happened if things had gone another way. In one instance, the book describes Minik's plan to return to the Greenland and to lead a group of Inuit to the North Pole. He hoped to attain international honour for his people. Harper made the declaration that even had Minik tried, there was no way that he would have been successful. He further added that Minik's desire to prove the superiority of his race was an ethnocentric idea no doubt learned from the white people of New York, that the Greenland Inuit would balk at such ideas and that, with nothing to gain but glory for their people, they would surely refuse to help Minik. Even if Harper's learned ethnocentrism theory is correct, Harper has no way of ever knowing what Minik could have accomplished had he tried. If Minik had learned such ideas from white people, who's to say the Greenland Inuit wouldn't in turn learn such ideas from Minik? The point is, no one knows what would have happened and it is futile to guess (even for the well-informed). Also, the edition of the book that I have, has included discussion questions at the end for readers groups. These are very laughable. To paraphrase a typical question, "Kenn Harper lives among the people that he writes about and is therefore the greatest historian and writer to ever write about Northern peoples. Discuss how his portrayal of Eskimos is the most accurate description ever to be put on paper." But despite the embarrassing readers club guide at the end and the occasional subjective statement from Harper, the book is eye-opening about the victims of science and was a pleasurable read.

                                4 out of 5 stars Intriguing...... sad.......2002-08-25

Kenn Harper has managed to bring together an amazing story through detailed research. Minik, the Polar Eskimo child, was brought to the US by Robert Peary and essentially placed on display. The story of his disconnected life is full of pathos and sorrow. Yet Harper weaves the story with life.

Peary's behaviors were simply egotistic and reprehensible. He treated the Eskimos as his property. He placed their lives in harms' way by bringing them to a culture and location that assaulted their senses and immune systems. Minik was the price paid for that deed.

I did get bogged down in names from time to time, especially as Harper recounted the financial misdealings of Wallace, who had taken responsibility for Minik. But overall, the story is entertaining and enlightening. It speaks to the ethnocentrism of Peary's generation and to the isolation of the Polar Eskimos. It took me a long time to read and absorb this book but it was rewarding in the end... to see and feel a culture so far away.

Storyline is very intriguing, but the writing is a bit droll. It is also longer than necessary.
