Best book I've read on the Tour.......2006-07-14

I am a big fan of the Tour de France and an avid cyclist so I've read alot of books pertaining to both over the years. Several good books and a number of mediocre ones.

However, I have to say that this is the best book on the event that I have ever read. It's entertaining without being condescending. Roll's prose is humorous at times but still respectful of this incredible sporting and cultural event. If you are new to the sport this book will help explain the nuances. If you're like me and watch every stage, the book is still helpful-especially where he explains often-used french terms.

Lastly, Bob Roll is probably one of the best Tour commentators, next Liggett and Sherwen, out there. He is a former racer and knows what he's talking about. Great read before and after the race.

Hey!
Like any non-athletic (cycling, football, golf, soccerball, basketball, and baseball) person who actually watches the Tour and throughly enjoy's Bobkes' take on all the action, Hail to the Bobke!!!! He really explains all of it in pretty simply terms for us gals who are couch potatoes and who really enjoy the competitiveness of it all. I've been watching the Tour since the mid 80's when Greg LeMond outsmarted and won. Bobkes' real-life description is the only one I trust, heck, the man rode the Tour didn't he? He rode to help Lance realize his true ambition/talent on that mountain in Boone, North Carolina didn't he? Bobke has helped me understand the Tour with the companion book, it's like he's right next to me riding along. I love all the guys from OLN but Bobke is the one that holds all the respect.

An extremely readable and entertaining book for all those who want the inside scoop and understanding of the Tour de France. Bob Roll is both articulate and amusing. It has enough general information that it is worth keeping, even after the tour is finished, although some of the information is specific to this year's tour and Lance Armstrong. I have followed the tour for more than 40 years, and consider myself knowledgable, but still learned some interesting details

Unfulfilled Promise.......2005-07-24

Tour de France: Companion 2005 implies that you will be getting a guide to the race for 2005. If that is your expectation, you will be disappointed. Of the 184 pages, almost 5 relate to this year's race in what is hardly more than cursory detail...

There are no profiles of the stages. There are no individual stage maps. There are no descriptions of the routes and the challenges they pose. The authors, it is clear, have not taken the trouble to follow and scout this year's route. They did not follow last years either would be my guess, nor will they next.

The cover of the book promises to provide a 2005 crib sheet. If the reader expects to pass a test based on the promise of the crib sheet, he will get a failing grade. Look elsewhere if you are interested in information regarding the current Tour de France.

The American Heritage Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs Is Really Good:).......2006-08-30

I really like how comprehensively the book is structured. It is concise and even includes terms that are considered offensive, but I believe that a dictionary, regardless of its kind, should always be as practical and illustrative as possible, just as this one is. If you like The American Heritage Dictionary, this one, to me, is a very distinguished comrade. It's absolutely useful.

It is definitely a one-of-a-kind as I own the collection. A portion of the proceeds go into an art scholarship fund which I established in memory of my late husband. He was an art director for the Gannett Company for over 30 years.

Useful for the bored or those interested in breeding.......2007-01-27

ÿIf you are just looking for a book about basic betta care, this book is not for you. Most of the book is about how to breed bettas. Myself, being interested in breeding bettas, found this book somewhat useful. Unfortunately there is not enough in-depth information about the breeding process and I had to refer to the internet on many occasions. The breeding information is useful, but if you want to really try to raise bettas read some other sources first. This book is an alright introduction to breeding. The only up side to this book are the color pictures, about one a page. The overview about "genetics" was rather confusing.
The author's first language was definitely not English. Most of the book is well written, but there are a few strange sentences here and there. A goodly portion of the book is stories the author had about breeding bettas. These stories were interesting, but not entirely useful.
I would not waste my time buying this book unless it was a last resort. If you can get it for free, it would be worth reading.

If you want to BREED bettas, ok.......2006-04-30

The title of this book is very misleading. There is actually very little information on how to care for bettas, and the entire focus of the book seems to be breeding. If you are looking for tips on how to breed bettas and how to create color combinations, this is a great book. However, I just wanted a betta care guide, and was very disappointed in this book.

This book has some bits of information on basic betta care and it provides plenty of advice on the breeding of bettas (environmental conditions that encourage spawning and possible deviations that can occur during the spawning process) and the raising of the fry (first foods, water maintenance and jarring). It is recommended for those who are interested in the challenge of going into the mass production and sale of bettas for fun and for profit.

Very disappointing book.......2004-02-17

The inaccuracies in this book were too numerous to count. What's more, very little practical information is given on good fish husbandry; instead, the author seems to focus more on "bettas for profit."

At one point, Mr. Maurus remarks that bettas are short-lived, and as a result it is best "...not to get too attached." What kind of advice is this for serious pet owners?

Very poor, other than the pictures. Otherwise I would have rated it a 0.

better for breeders than those who just want pets........2004-01-02

So as you can see, it's mostly about breeding and selling betta fish. It would definetely be good if you're planning on doing that, but otherwise I wouldn't bother buying it. While it does have some helpful information (diagram of different parts and fins of the betta, information on housing, and foods) it would be much more helpful if there were a section on health (diseases and treating them) and diagrams of the different kinds of betta fish (since this is a book about breeding them!).

Mixed feelings.......2007-10-01

The book did not offer any information in the way of betta care, which makes it a poor resource for the general fish owner. However, it is a valuable resource for people wishing to breed Bettas as it contains extensive information on this topic. Personally, I enjoyed reading the historical background surrounding Betta breeding and evolution. This is truly a remarkable species of fish, and the author brought this out nicely. In addition, the photographs were better than any I have seen and the text was well composed.

However, like some other readers, I had a big problem with the information presented on Betta fighting. I know that the text is dated, written for a different era of betta owners (in the 1980s maybe?). Regardless, it was disturbing that such a practice would be discussed with such overt enthusiasm.

Basic information about bettas with nice pictures.......2004-11-01

This book offers basic information to starting hobbyists about the physiology, care, maintenance and breeding of the Betta splendens species, as well as the rearing of fry. The chapter on show standards and betta competitions has very nice pictures, including the albino strain that was successfully bred in Japan by Tanaka in 1994.

Not Very Informative.......2002-11-20

For anyone looking to find a detailed resource on the care of betta splendens, this book is not for you. A great deal of space in this book is devoted to the history of the fish, how they fight with other males (there are even explicit pictures of this process, which I was certainly not interested in seeing), and how to breed them. The sections covering their care are woefully lacking - the page on diseases merely lists the ailments and then offers a recommendation for another book in which to find more information. The tone of this book also stunned me - it is apparent that the author thinks of these fish as a source of income rather than as pets. Mention is made of fish that are not "exciting or saleable," and how sub-standard hatchlings should be culled or disposed of. I was quite offended by this - even the most dully-colored betta could find a happy home somewhere! The only reason I'm giving this book one star at all is because there are a lot of beautiful photos inside. It looks more like a picture book than anything else, actually. Very disappointing.

Pretty Good.......2002-01-05

I thought this book was pretty good. It showed you a lot of good pictures of the betta fish and it was very helpful in the history of betta fish, but some of the stuff that i was looking for in it, wasn't there, it just had a lot of pictures, and the history of bettas, it took up like 7 pages on the history where as they only did 3 sentences on how to take care of them!! if you are just looking for cool and good pictures of betta fish then you should buy this book, but if you are looking for information on betta fish then maybe you should look for a differnt boook, it was a great book, just not what i was looking for. I love betta fish and i think they are the cooles fish ever!

Leaves something to be desired........2001-09-22

After I rescued 2 beta fish from very poor conditions, I needed some really good information on their care. I did not find it in this book. It has a couple paragraphs about diseases, absolutely no charts or diagrams for biology or anything, and while the pictures were really beautiful, they had nothing to do with the topic on the same pages. There is a lot about how to have beta fights, and speaks of it in a very condoning tone! This is quite cruel and inhumane. There is I grant you some decent very basic info that you could glean off the internet yourself in an hour or two.

Wow! I just cannot say enough good things about this book! When it arrived, before opening it I expected to just see another book with black and white sketches telling me things I already knew. But from cover to cover, I found tons of beautiful, inspiring photos of actual gardens and landscaping which has given me many good ideas to incorporate into my own plans. The text is also easy to follow and understand (even for a beginner), the detailed captions are very helpful, and the overall layout of this book, with its various sections broken down, is to be commended. I would give it 10 stars!

Natalia Ilyin has it dead on (so be sure to read her review).
Really amazing examples inside by top world design firms from the USA, Europe, Middle East, Korea, Japan, etc. such as Bruno Monguzzi, Gunter Rambow, cyan, Lucille Tenazas, Why Not Assoc., Catherine Zask, and last but not least Pierre Bernard.
This is the kind of quality hard back design book at a great price that is worth every penny.
It would also make a great gift for a soon to be or current graphic design major at any art and design school or university. They would love it!

Manipulating type and image to create the tension that breaks meaning open is the essence of graphic design. Few books, particularly books created as "workshops," do a balanced job of communicating useful strategies for creating with type and image. Often their authors are a little better at one thing than they are at the other--a little better at type or a little better at using images. But few have an equally high standard or talent in both, and for this reason, the tension that makes meaning lags, and the book is useful for some lessons, but not for others. Not so with Skolos and Wedell. Their combined type talent and image expertise-- born of working together for so long, perhaps-- is like that of one consciousness-- a doubled consciousness that benefits the user. Their book is a rich, satisfying review of technique and result. I recommend it as a primary text for any design course that explores the making of meaning in graphic design.
