Customer Reviews:
the rewiew.......2004-05-22
This book is only intended for younger kids like ages 5-11+ and is awesome for that age group. However this is the worst book of self defence i've seen but im just keeping in mind its awesome for Younger people ONLY. If you want to learn realistic and effective self defence buy another book.
For beginning martial artists.......2000-05-12
This is the fourth book on pressure points written by George Dillman and Chris Thomas. The text has been written specifically with the younger martial artist in mind, and the authors make good use of photographs showing instruction with children.
The use of "pressure points" in martial arts refers to strikes to small points along the body which are used in acupuncture. As such, this book includes a very brief introduction to Asian internal medical theory (i.e., why stiking acupoints can be so effective), to help the reader understand the point terms and concepts, and makes references to Mr. Dillman and Thomas' earlier works.
Unfortunatly, the authors have chosen to only cover 17 of the 350+ classical pressure points (ten on the inner and outer arms, five on the lower torso and two on the legs). Regarding the selected points (L-5, L-6, L-8, H-6, EX M-UE-28, LI-7, LI-10, TW-11, TW-12, SI-7, CV-3, CV-4, CV-5, CV-6, SP-10, SP-11 and SP-12), the authors provide excellent anatomical diagrams, but provide limited descriptive text on where those referenced points are located and their martial function / application. In fact, the "how they work" paragraphs are so simplified, each of the discriptive texts numbers 14 words or less. While I can appreciate the fact that the authors are writing this text with a beginning martial arts student in mind, I think they simplified the text too much. A few areas do footnote Mr. Dillman and Thomas' earlier works, and suggest the readers learn more about the points once they become more advanced. But the existing text is so limited in the extent of its explanation, I am not convinced this is the best manner in which to write an introductory primer on a subject rooted in Chinese Dim Mak theory.
In addition to the few pressure points covered, the authors give a brief historical overview of the development of karate, and provide application overviews on the basic building blocks of a martial arts curriculum: stances, punches, blocks, kicks and kata. The final chapters include some training and drill advice.

Best Book I've Seen for Speechwriting.......2007-03-29
This book is from the same publisher of The Elements of Style. Just as Style is a standard for writing, this book is a standard for speechwriting and public speaking.
It is highly readable and gives very useful information most other public speaking books do not offer.
It is divided into three parts - preparation, delivery, and topics of special interest.
In preparation, topics covered in detail include knowing your audience and setting, setting communication goals, selecting a topic, types of speeches and how they are written differently, preparing the speech opening, body and closing, thesis statement, organizing the speech, improving clarity, making a speech interesting instead of dull, and more.
In delivery,
methods of script preparation, visual aids, dealing with fears, rehearsing, body language, dress, tone, the difference between spoken language and written language and how this affects your speech delivery, and how to use rhetorical techniques to make a your speech memorable and persuasive are all included.
In topic of special interest,
persuasion, credibility, argumentation, rational and emotional appeals, and how to use humor appropriately in speech are all discussed.
All of the above topics are covered in fair depth with examples from speeches - both good and bad - given to illustrate key principles.
I found particularly useful the sections on scripting, rhetorical techniques, humor, and organization. He also gives the best advice I've encountered on how to make eye contact.
Written Like An Engineer!.......2000-11-02
Extremely easy to read and very well organized. Author has relevant examples and whole book is straight forward style with out the usual pontificating, pompous approach of most writers of public speaking books. Written like an engineer-no mushy soft stuff. Best discussion of any book on merits of each type of script (Word for word, traditional outline, key word outline, pictograph).Excellent discussion of body mechanics and eye contact tips. Excellent chapter on humor and how and when to use it.

Customer Reviews:
A mediocre guide to keeping the little fellas........2005-05-23
Upon purchasing this book i immediately thought, 'Yes! My Sugar Gliders' will live prosperously now!'. However after 20 minutes of using this book, the smug grin was wiped off of my face. My favourite sugar glider 'Leslie Hughes' had died of lung cancer. The chapter 'Teaching your Sugar Glider to smoke Cigars' was partly responsible for this I feel.
Not helpful at all.......2005-01-31
I have owned my sugar gliders for ten years (hopefully I'll have them at least 5 or more). A lot of time was spent researching with books, the internet, and message boards. Sugar gliders are great pets, but they not easy pets (on a scale of 1 to 10 - a 9). Nor are they good pets for everyone during all points of life. They live a long time and take as much care and money as a dog or cat.
I bought this book a few years ago when I first owned my crew. I ended up throwing it away because it was so bad. First off, the pictures are very pretty and glossy (typical of this publisher) but they are all of the same animal which shows you the scope of the author's experience--someone with lots of glider experience would have shots of many different animals.
Furthermore, the advice offered in this book is mediocre--in fact some of the husbandry advice could actually HARM a sugar glider (ex- NEVER FEED CATFOOD - the ash in it can block up a glider's intestinal tract and kill him).
There is very little info in it about handling/bonding with gliders or their complex personalities--and how to deal with day-to-day issues and emergencies (trimming sharp nails, bonding, benefits of neutering, Leadbeater's mix--proper diet, how to deal with injuries and self-mutilation, etc). The thing this book mostly talks about is breeding and the genetics of breeding which is not useful if you just want a pet.
There are much better books (Caroline MacPherson comes to mind) and resources (ex- ISGA website and Glider Central website) to learn about sugar gliders and their necessary care.
Disappointing.......2000-01-25
I followed the guidelines as outlined in this book and found that it only made brief mention the most important parts of raising sugar gliders. The dietary information is largely incorrect, and upon review of the book by my veteranarian I've decided this book is only good for the pictures. It is best to speak to a vet experienced with sugar gliders and NEVER rely on a book such as this one.
This book was not very helpful.......1999-06-18
This book i feel was not very helpful! It did not have a variety of pictures. All of the pictures were of the same animal and it was always relieving itself! The did not include most of the information I found that I really needed to tame and care for my two sugar gliders
Technical but helpful.......1998-12-17
I liked this book becuase it was very helpful, but it is har to understand. This book was a very intresting book to read but I think much of the information was way to scientic and hard to understand. The pictures are great! The book was very helpful taking care of "Joey."

Customer Reviews:
Useful & Has Depth.......2004-12-27
David Joyce's book on topiary is well-designed to interest the beginning topiarist, along with those who are more experienced. I've had this book for several years now and I learn something from it every time I refer to it.
I recently used it to try (hack?) my first topiary -- a boxwood bird. Joyce offers dimensions (such as plant size, and height at which to begin cutting), which I imagine would be helpful to those who appreciate precise directions. There are also large and detailed images of different types of topiary, along with sections on espalier and the like. This is a valuable reference in my garden library.
Topiary and the Art of Training Plants.......2000-04-10
As someone who loves the structure of formal gardens and wanting to try to create one on a small scale in my yard, I was very pleased with David Joyce's Topiary and the Art of Training Plants. He assumes his reader has some knowledge of the basics of growing plants, although he does give very general information on preparing beds for topiary plants. The book has sections on the causes and some solutions for established topiary in decline and how to correct a neglected and overgrown hedge. The book explains how to create some shapes in topiary along with step by step illustrations. Regarding hedges, it tells when and how to train widely used hedging plants. The book even relates how to grow pleached screens - training trees with flexible branches. There are sections on creating knot gardens, mazes, and climbers used as screens and canopies. The book gives a directory of a selection of plants for topiary and hedges, along with information on the hardiness, growth, size, maintenance, propagation and problems of these plants. It also lists sources to obtain plants and tools. The book is full of color pictures which will inspire plenty of ideas. It will be a great reference as I design and maintain my own topiary.

Book Description
No other word in the English language is more endemic to contemporary Black American culture and identity than "Soul". Since the 1960s Soul has been frequently used to market and sell music, food, and fashion. However, Soul also refers to a pervasive belief in the capacity of the Black body/spirit to endure the most trying of times in an ongoing struggle for freedom and equality. While some attention has been given to various genre manifestations of Soul-as in Soul music and food-no book has yet fully explored the discursive terrain signified by the term. In this broad-ranging, free-spirited book, a diverse group of writers, artists, and scholars reflect on the ubiquitous but elusive concept of Soul. Topics include: politics and fashion, Blaxploitation films, language, literature, dance, James Brown, and Schoolhouse Rock. Among the contributors are Angela Davis, Manning Marable, Paul Gilroy, Lyle Ashton Harris, Michelle Wallace, Ishmael Reed, Greg Tate, Manthia Diawara, and dream hampton.

A very special travel guide .......2005-02-08
Writers' And Artists' Hideouts: Great Getaways For Seducing The Muse by literary agent Andrea Brown is a very special travel guide for writers, artists, actors, and other creative people seeking to find somewhere they can go to focus upon their work which is all to often interrupted in their primary homes, studios and offices with the demands of friends, family, and the pressures of day-to-day living. Ranging from the inexpensive ($19.00 per night hostels) to the extravagant ($1000.00 per night luxury hotels) Writers' & Artists' Hideouts covers the gamut. Arranged geographically into The Pacific Northwest; California; Hawaii & Alaska; The Southwest; The Rocky Mountain States; The Midwest; The Heartland; The Northeast; The Mid-Atlantic; and The Southeast, Writers' & Artists' Hideouts is further enhanced with the inclusion of an informative Introduction, advice on "How to Use This Book", security tips, an "Index by Venue"; and an "Index by City". The Right Setting for Your Writing.......2004-10-26
You know what happens when you try to write at home. The kids start fighting, the laundry begs to be flipped, the pasta starts boiling over on the stove...
Distractions abound. Responsibilities nag.
For many writers, the ideal place to write is anywhere other than home. Literary agent Andrea Brown provides a solution: Take a "working" vacation.
In this guide, Andrea profiles about 600 hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, lodges, lighthouses, and other getaway locations that she thinks are perfect for writers seeking inspiration. Each entry is short, providing a brief description of the location and amenities, and a price range. Most entries also have a website address where you can visit to see more details.
It's the scenery that most often determines what makes a place ripe for inspiration, so here you'll find descriptions of lake and mountain views, beautiful gardens, and palm trees.
Want to get in the mood to write that period romance? Maybe what you seek is a Gothic Victorian mansion to set those fingers flying across the keyboard. Want to get in the mind of your fisherman protagonist? Hang out at a rustic lodge.
Listed by region, the entries cover a range of accommodations, simple to luxurious. For the writer who loves to travel, this book may provide just the right spot to get your work done and get pampered at the same time.
