DATED........2006-08-26
Its like sitting next to an old man who wont stop telling you old war stories or keeps nagging on about how much better it was "back in the day"... But if you listen hard enough and dont get bored with the flashbacks, you can pick out bits and pieces of usefull information. Worth buying if under $6.
You have to read this book!.......2006-03-31
"The Ultimate in Rifle Accuracy" by Glenn Newick ISBN:0-88317-159-7
Friends, I just read a great book on the above mentioned title. It is short, and plumb full of tips, advice and teaching on getting the most accuracy out of your rifle. The author writes primarily of Benchrest type shooting and the 6PPC cartridge, but he does give advice about hunting rifles, calibers too. He has a whole chapter on getting the most out of your hunting rifle with many explanations of why shots go wrong. There is a detailed section on how to reload rifle rounds for maximum accuracy, in a most straight forward way. One of the tips I liked the most is that of never resting your front sling attachment point on the rest when you shoot. As the recoil moves the first 2/10 inch before the bullet leaves the barrel, you have an upward jerk that moves the shot off course. This was priceless. He also said that if you use any kind of a wind flag, be it a ribbon your groups will decrease by 25%. Just like those tips there are several throughout a very easy to read book. Take this from a man (Glenn Newick, not me) that can put 5 shots into the size of a dime at 200 yards, and you know you can come away with something. I learned about this book by reading a Precision Shooting Magazine compilation of articles. It referred to this book so many times I knew they were onto something. It is a short read and I guarantee you will come away with something that will make you a better rifle shoot. -Migs
Accuracy the simple way..........2005-06-01
Glenn Newick has written an excellent book about the chase for shooting performance; contesting the wind, fighting the mirage, and stepping up with the big boys in search of tighter and tighter groups. In a conversational tone, with many reflections of the sport of benchrest shooting, some remarkable people, and where it is going from here; Glenn has delivered an exciting and informative read. Whether you are interested in NBRSA, or just desire to sight a rifle in with two shots fired, this is the book to buy. Specialized toward the benchrest crowd, this is a fascinating book from cover to cover.
The name is misleading.......2004-07-22
The title of the book is THE ULTIMATE IN RIFLE ACCURACY: GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR EQUIPMENT AND YOURSELF. Nowhere on the front or back cover, or inside flaps, is the reader told that the book is about benchrest shooting, except that the back cover indicates that the author is a champion in benchrest shooting. Yet the book is almost exclusively on benchrest shooting. The title page is even more misleading with the subtitle, "A handbook for those who seek the ultimate in rifle accuracy; whether it be for competition, testing, or hunting."
I picked up this book thinking that it would help me in my rifle shooting. I thought it would tell me how to hold the rifle in different positions like standing, sitting or prone. Of course, it only addresses bench rest. I expected the author to explain what features that contribute to accuracy to look for in a rifle, but he talks primarily about specific manufacturers and parts instead of what to look for in components. In a field where many components are made by small one-man shops, this information can become very dated. At one point, the author uses this forum to complain of a certain manufacturer, and used language that was a bit on the coarse side for a non-fiction technical book.
Chapters include Safety, History, Rifle, the 6PPC, Bullets, the Bench, Wind Shooting, Flags, and different categories of benchrest matches, like Light Varmint, Heavy Varmint and Unlimited/Heavy. I really can't tell the History chapter from the rest of the book, because most of the book seems to be the author telling stories from the history of benchrest shooting. At the end of each chapter, I just felt a hunger for more useful, technical information. In fact, in a couple of places, the author refers the reader to THE ACCURATE RIFLE by Warren Page for more detailed information. It seems that this was book I should have purchased instead! A chapter on "Benchrest Techniques for Hunting Rifles" is thrown in, but seems to be a half-hearted attempt at making the book applicable to a more general audience. (I can hear the publisher, "This book is all on benchrest shooting. Add a chapter on hunting so we can sell it to a broader audience.") Note that there is an entire chapter on the 6mm PPC cartridge. If you're not using it, you're a nobody, and you're not going to get any help here.
The benchrest glossary in the back was pretty good, and in fact, if the reader reads it first, he has a better chance of following the remainder of the book. It is hard to tell who the intended audience is. Obviously, it is solely for someone with an interest in benchrest shooting, but to an experienced benchrest shooter, it is too basic. To someone with no previous knowledge of benchrest shooting, it skips some basics. (After a few chapters, I begin to get the impression that benchrest shooting only measures group size, rather than calculate a target score as with other type of shooting competitions, but that is never explicitly stated. I am also still puzzled as to the purpose of that square on the targets.)
Although the book has photos (probably more than half are of prominent benchrest competitors either shooting or holding awards or targets), it could use more drawings to explain the technical points. It is hard to describe reloading with just words.
I conclude that the book is for a novice who has had an introduction to benchrest shooting, and wants a cursory overview of the sport. With a few changes, and an appropriate title, this book might be a good one. For example, change the title to "Introduction to Benchrest Shooting," delete the "hunting" chapter, and add a chapter explaining the basics of the sport, such as the GOAL. With changes like this it wouldn't lead the wrong audience to purchase it, and would be more valuable to the correct audience.
For competitive shooters only........2003-12-29
If you really want to get into bench shooting then get this book. If you want to know about accurizing rifles, better shooting techniques and sighting then forget about it. I think the 'hunting' part was thrown in to get this book sold at Wal-Mart.
For every item I found useful I had to wade through page after page of competitive bench jargon. For instance the chapter on shooting technique was mostly about selecting a rest and punching '0.xx' inch groups by moving the sandbag under the stock. Not to mention that every picture in this book is of some competitive shooter with a rifle and most seem to be from the 1980's.

I have had this little helper for years and recently gave it to two friends who also write a great deal of poetry. They have found it VERY helpful also.
Rhyme for your pastime.......2002-03-06
This is THE book for writers of rhymes who are anyone short of the likes of Cole Porter, one of the master of off-beat, intricate rhymes. This book is easy to use, presents good explanations (brief, to the point) in the short preface, and includes an excellent list with illustrations of pronunciation symbols. If you are like I---kinda embarrassed, reluctant, to have to depend on a reference book for your rhymes---be relaxed: Steve Sodheim and others of such find rhyming reputations have said in public that they do indeed use such references. This gem has 50,000 entries---no, I did not count them; I take the word of the cover info---and if you can't find a rhyme you need in that stack, you may be streaching too far to create your jingle. Enjoy!

British Olympian and National Champion Carl Hester shares his training methods and shows how they can be adapted to suit individual horses. What makes this book so unique is that all the horses featured in this book are horses who have problems. None of them is perfect because in real life the perfect horse doesn't exist. "The aim of the book," Carl explains, "is not to describe ideal training scenarios but to look at what we can do, to the best of our ability, with the horses we have. Even with difficult horses, as I have proved with Escapado. It is important not to give up until you are absolutely sure that it's not going to work." "If there is a glimmer of hope," says Carl, it is worth persevering. It might take longer to get there, but if you, the rider, have patience, it may well still be possible and this is just as true at the higher levels as it is at the lower ones." With Carl's approach of using jargon-free text and wonderful color photos to share his methods, this book stands out from other training manuals in usefulness and pleasure in reading.

Customer Reviews:
Great resource for token collectors!.......2007-03-09
Put on your reading glasses and your back-brace! This updated volume (4th edition) is huge, heavy, and filled to the brim with small print and b/w pictures...but those are necessary evils considering the breadth of information covered in this book. I wondered if the $35 price would be justified and I suppose it is. There may be easier ways (e.g., on-line) to find information about individual tokens, private merchant coins and cards, commemorative US coins, campaign tokens, as well as territorial gold and silver, but for serious collectors of early American exonumia or anyone trying to identify or establish the value of an unusual US coin, this volume is indispensable. I only wish my eyes were better! I'm glad I bought the book. Beyond its usefulness as a field guide, it is chock-full of interesting historical information and trivia, making it a very cool resource for anyone curious about how commerce, politics, and territorial expansion took place in colonial and post-colonial times. It also covers the Civil War era and after, up until the turn of the 20th century. Collecting these rare coins can be a gratifying hobby. Many of the coins are quite affordable and all are interesting snapshots of the mindset of our forebears. Also, by using this guide one might discover that the weird coin or faded store card found in Grandpa's sock drawer is a unique treasure which could yield big "bucks" (an exonumia term: buckskins were used as currency in the colonial period) at the next coin show or in an online auction. I gave the book 4 stars only because there are no color pictures, even though the details of coins are often easier to see in black and white. If there were color plates, however, I might not have been able to afford to buy this book.
Standard Catalog of U.S. Tokens 1700-1900.......2007-03-08
Catalog was rec'd promptly and in good condition. Contents are everything we thought it would be.
The all around best reference book for United States Tokens........2007-02-20
This is the absolute best reference book for collectors of United States Tokens and exonumia. The detailed pictures make identification easy and the index works extremely well. This is a must have for any United States coin/token collector. A++

With the 50 colorfully illustrated, simple projects in these pages even the smallest lawn can become a children's paradise. Without compromising on safety, your pocketbook, or the garden's finished look, you can build brilliant hideaways such as flower teepees and washing line tents or construct innovative play structures including mind-boggling mazes and climbing walls. Children will blossom in these landscapes that inspire imaginative play, provide physical challenges, and nurture an interest in nature.

An Absolute Favorite.......2005-10-08
I finally bought this book after repeatedly renewing it from our public library! It has great ideas, with easy to follow instructions. So many of the ideas can be easily incorporated into our back yard scheme. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a way to make your backyard a garden haven for your kids!
A Colorful and Inspirational Creative Ideas Book.......2004-07-21
This book contains vivid, colorful, well-photographed images of unique design ideas for those contemplating creating a garden space for their children. If you want to go beyond the ho-hum play structure that costs a bundle, and add something to spark the creative child lurking within your child, this book is for you. Ideas like a rill for sailboat races, turning an old tire into a bright blue sailboat sandbox, a fold-away play house, and setting a trampoline flush with the lawn all inspired me. The authors got a bit off course with a section on holidays in the garden, but otherwise a great book - - if you have the energy to actually garden when you have children!
Beautiful, inspirational book.......2004-02-17
This book is a delight for the eye, even if you never get around to translating any of the very many ideas for child-friendly gardens into reality. However, the suggestions are so inspiring that you will itch to create them in your own back yard - whether a rope spiderweb for climbing or a grass stool or a clematis teepee to hide away in.
If I have any criticism it is that sometimes the instructions take a back seat to the luscious photography. Slightly more detailed instructions would have been a help and a comfort to those of us who are not consummate do-it-yourself-ers.
My children enjoyed leafing through this as much as I did and when we run out of space in our own small garden, we will start taking over the grandparents' garden! There are just so many nice projects we want to undertake!
Amazon.com
A fascinating book with over 50 easy, fun projects for kids of nearly all ages, including: growing potatoes in tires, building a gardening tool station, making a purple martin house from a gourd, and discovering the joys of composting. Clear, simple explanations of plant physiology, and discussion of other garden-relevant wildlife such as birds and bugs, make this a great teaching resource as well as a how-to book.

Garden Crafts for Kids: 50 Reasons to Get your Hands Dirty.......2001-02-11
One of the most enjoyable books I have found to do garden crafts with my children. Each of the projects were fun and easy to do. I would recommend this book to young and Old. I hope the author is working on another book. Her illustrations were great.
Garden Crafts for Kids.......2000-04-12
Not only is this a great resource for kids, but also for beginning gardeners like myself. I was getting buried by the information in other gardening books...complex soil testing, amending, feeding, etc. This book takes similar information and makes it understandable and makes the results seem achievable. The info given on easy-to-grow vegetables, easy-to-grow flowers, and, especially, the chart for diagnosing and solving growing problems are VERY helpful. I found this at the public library and MUST have it at home!
Fatnastic resource for parents of young gardeners!.......1999-03-06
I was incredibly blessed to have stumbled across this book in our public library. It has become one of those rare additions to our home collection. For beginner gardeners, or even the seasoned, there is an abundance of helpful information within the covers. The pictures are beautiful and captivating for children. The craft ideas are inexpensive, fun, and very practical. Highly recommendo!!
This is a super resourse for both parents and teachers!.......1998-03-24
As a new first grade teacher, I found this book to be very helpful in planning my gardening unit that I did with my class. It includes all information that you would need as well as a lot of helpful hints for newcomers to the gardening world. This book also includes lots of ideas to try at home, from recycling to composting to eating what you grow-- super for science fair type projects!

Highly informative.......2002-11-18
This book is part of a series of nine books that look at various aspects of ancient technology. The book I acquired was from the 1965 edition, and may be different from other editions. This book has four hefty chapters: Irrigation and Drainage; Power; Land Transport and Road-Building; and The Coming of the Camel.
As with the other books in this series, this one goes into a great depth on the topics that it covers. It was originally written for an academic audience, and as such the text is rather dry (almost turgid). However, as a resource, it is nothing short of excellent. I would recommend getting a copy of this book from a later edition, but any one is bound to be highly informative.

Book Description
i Making Culture Visible /i offers a fresh focus on the history of nineteenth century photography. The narrative moves from a close-up look at several selected events between 1847 and 1900, from six industrial fairs to the looming presence of the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in the mid-1870s. The last two chapters deal with the exhibition work of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum in the 1880s, and finally the collecting and displays of public libraries in the 1890s. This book revitalizes the roots of photography's own cultural history by reconnecting it to a living social process, played against the stage of cultural exhibition.
Book Description
"Horne's writing handsomely communicates the artistic, political and social climate of the world that created the multidimensional Graham Du Bois... You will not want to put it down."
Black Issues Book Review
"A fascinating account of the extraordinary life of W. E. B. Du Bois's widow: a complex, creative woman who lived a colorful, meaningful life."
Essence
"Horne is the first biographer to grant Shirley Graham Du Bois her due."
Boston Globe
"Gerald Horne rescues Shirley Graham Du Bois from historical obscurity and from the shadow of her husband."
The Women's Review of Books
"Horne's account is sensitive to the self-assertion of a brilliant African American woman in an environment dominated by racism and male supremacy...Its exemplary exploration of the intersection of gender, race, art, black protest, and postcolonial Africa is an inspiration for further research into the expatriate Left."
Axel R. Schäfer, The Journal of American History
"Horne's book is path breaking because it departs from the usual scholarly habit of valorizing the lives of African American men at the expense of recording the contributions and lives of African Amercian women."
Political Affairs
Horne's biography of this outstanding woman provides a treasures throve of detail and insight into a life of this intriguing and, until this study, one of the least studied and least appreciated activists and artists of the 20th century.
Sage Race Relations Abstracts
One of the most intriguing activists and artists of the twentieth century, Shirley Graham Du Bois also remains one of the least studied and understood. In
Race Woman, Gerald Horne draws a revealing portrait of this controvertial figure who championed the civil rights movement in America, the liberation struggles in Africa and the socialist struggles in Maoist China. Through careful analysis and use of personal correspondence, interviews, and previously unexamined documents, Horne explores her work as a Harlem Renaissance playwright, biographer, composer, teacher, novelist, Left political activist, advisor and inspiration, who was a powerful historical actor.
