1 out of 5 stars Barely worth the paper.......2007-03-23

If you're simply looking for a "yellow pages" of trails in Texas, this will probably suit you. But if you want any useful information about a particular trail, or any means of comparing trails to help you choose a destination for that next weekend trip, this book is far from adequate.

The maps are abysmally bad. Most have no scale or other reference of distance. Many have a wide variety of line weights and types, signifying various roads, rivers, or trails, but there is no legend telling you what those lines mean... and the symbols are not even consistent between the maps! Obviously, each map was copied from a different source, and no effort was made to redraw them consistently.

The regional maps are worse, mixing a useless numbering system for the trails with an alphabetical table of contents that makes it a three step process to find your way from the map to the trail description (or the reverse).

Most trail descriptions have less than 400 words, mostly consumed by directions to the trailhead and a few details about park fees and rules. There's hardly anything about the unique features, scenery, wildlife, terrain, etc. And worst of all, there isn't any kind of quick reference for the length of the trail, its difficulty, facilities, or anything else (except the contact information for whatever park manages the trail... a quite candid admission that you're not going to find the information you need HERE!)

But I think the most ridiculous part about the book is the pitiful 8-page section in the middle with a total of 24 mediocre-quality color photographs (yes, 24 photos to describe the entire state of Texas)... it makes you wonder why they even bothered.

Hiking & Backpacking Trails is a useful complement to your outdoor reference library. The guide is best suited to families seeking multi-use trails and recreation options who don't have a lot of time to research trips online. Couple this book with Laurence Parent's "Hiking Texas" , and you've got everything you need to plan your outdoor adventures on the trails of Texas.

Best features of this book -- copies of facilities maps are included, helping you plan ahead the route(s) you may wish to take, and each park is accompanied by a small map of Texas showing the park's location relative to the rest of the state.

4 out of 5 stars Full of concise, helpful info for the Texas backpacker........1999-05-16

I recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring Texas parks on foot. Parks are arranged by region, and there is a section devoted to parks that offer trails for the backpacker; many facilities are cross-referenced. Sometimes the information is a little brief, but an informative overview of each park is given, along with a contact address and phone number of the respective operating agency, if additional information is desired. I haven't found a more thorough source for backpacking Texas.

Just buy them seperately and you'll be ok, just make sure you know what you're getting before you click buy.

When I bought the Vis-a-Vis: Beginning French, the website offered a combination with its work book which I readily accepted. I admit it was my mistake that I didnt bother to check the edition of the Workbook. I ended up with 3rd Edition Vis-a-Vis Book (which I wanted) and 2nd Edition Workbook (which I didnt want). If the website hadnt offered the combo I would have been more careful and checked the edition. On top of that I was charges the return shipping cost too! The 3rd Edition is not available for 2-5 weeks which is useless for me then!

        Book Description

Comic book superheroes are the mythological giants of 20th-century popular culture. Marvel has dominated the field for 60 years with the larger-than-life, yet very human, heroics of Captain America, Silver Surfer, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Incredible Hulk. Michael Mallory examines the characters' origins and subsequent evolution through interviews with such legendary cartoonists as Joe Simon, Roy Thomas, and Stan Lee, as well as with the animators who translated the Marvel exploits into other media -- TV, film, toys, video games, and theme park attractions. This collector's dream is illustrated with fabulous reproductions of comic art and hundreds of photographs from film and TV, many of which have never before been published.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice Looking Collectors/Coffee Table Book.......2005-08-17

This book, while lacking a little in historical content compared to Marvel: Five Fabulous Decadess of the World's Greatest Comics, exceels in Character content on primary Marvel heros. The art work, photos, and some updated material is nice (eventhough, in the age of comic movies, it is now behgind, but that cannot be helped).

Chapters on Captian America, Spider-man, and the Fantastic Four are very nice, but it does not do justice to other marvel heros such as the second tier group like the Punisher or Daredevil.

All in all, this book functions well as a coffee table book, of which it is intended. I ama Marvel and DC fan, and find this book to be a nice collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of the "Marvel Age" Of Comics.......2003-03-18

I put off buying Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe because of the price. I finally decided to give in to the temptation, and WOW, am I glad I did! I had an absolute BLAST reading this book.

The book is beautifully designed; It looks, smells, and feels GREAT. It's so attractive that at times I actually hated to open it for fear of getting it dirty. The cover art by Kaare Andrews is just gorgeous. Content-wise, Author Michael Mallory does a nice job of covering the history of the Marvel Bullpen and it's major players (Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko), and the Marvel Universe and it's major characters (Captain America, The Hulk, Spider-Man, and The X-Men each get extensive chapters of their own, The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Daredevil, The Silver Surfer, et al, all share smaller chapters). The chapters are lavishly illustrated, and filled with beautiful art from the Comics, Movies, TV shows, and video games that the characters have appeared in. I'm a REAL Marvel Comic afficionado, and not only did I NOT find too many mistakes in the book (A few, but nothing major...), but I actually learned a lot; My favorite tidbit- Captain America co-creator Joe Simon hails from my adopted hometown of Rochester, New York.

Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe is a luxury item, to be sure, but one I'm glad I splurged on. I guarantee any Marvel Zombie will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read and Coffee Table Book.......2002-05-03

This book is great. It goes into, although briefly the rise of marvel comics. The meat and potatoes of this book though is the study of the marvel characters. Captain America, Spider-man, The Incredible Hulk, and the X-Men are looked into in depth. Other characters in the marvel universe are also explored but not in the length of the others mentioned. Whats great about this book is that it looks at the characters major story lines and their origins but also their representations in other mediums. WOndering about Captain America in the movies or on t.v.? Then this is the book for you. There is also another great book titled "marvel universe." That book looks at the characters in the comics only. So if you want just a study of the comics go with "Marvel Universe." If you want a book that looks at everything invovled with the character go with this one. Or buy both, they are fantastic books. So buy both! I did.

        5 out of 5 stars Action packed.......2002-04-02

This book is great. Full color, large pictures and information from the past to present on most Marvel Heroes. What is great is that you can be entertained and kept interested while reading about charactors you might not have had any interest in before.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction to Marvel I've Seen.......2001-10-14

Most people who know me know I've loved comic books since I was a mere lad. Mallory's book on the Marvel Universe not only reminds me of exactly why comic books have inspired and thrilled me throughout my life, it includes things that not even I (ravenous comic book consumer that I am) have experienced. Mallory divides his book into several sections, some of which chronicle in detail the pop culture evolution of particular characters in the Universe (Spiderman, The Hulk, Captain America, and the X-Men come to mind.) It also details why comic book lovers consider the universe so special. Marvel was the first comic book company to seriously attempt to create a coherent universe out of all their titles. Ironically, unlike DC, they seem to have had less difficulty making readers take their universe seriously, by-passing all of the convoluted Earths and complicated and contradictory timelines that caused DC to write sometimes horribly ridiculous cross-over events to eradicate half of their characters.

One of the most important things that Mallory outlines in this book, and what makes Marvel so accessible to broad ranges of people, is the fact that the characters to come out of the Marvel Universe are so believable. They aren't perfect gods like their DC counterparts. They do sometimes make the wrong decisions. Spiderman, for instance, is a computer nerd. Iron Man is an alcoholic who has a hard time relating to other people. The X-Men are shunned across the globe because of their powers. These characters aren't automatically celebrated as like Superman and the Flash. People are afraid of those with more power than themselves. Mallory brings out this most human, and ultimately most important, aspect of the Marvel Universe. His book works because it brings out the characters behind those shiny and colorful spandex costumes, making sure that the reader understands that superheroics is not just about having powers and easily saving the day. It's also about wrestling with personal issues.

The book itself is quite simply beautiful. Hundreds of full color pictures chronicle the development of these characters. Dozens of interviews with such people as Stan Lee, Joe Simon and others add to the nuanced approach this book takes in discussing its subject matter. When I recieved the book in the mail, I was literally taken aback at the cover. I think many of you would agree, its one of the most spectacular covers I've ever seen on a book. More than simply chronicling the stories of the Marvel Universe, more than simply being a critical review of the characters within the universe, the book itself is a work of art, something you can display proudly on a coffee table or the like. Mallory brings up so many social issues that were inevitably tied with the production of these comics (Tony Stark's experiences in Vietnam being only one example), that the book inspires many discussions on the ways in which popular culture interacts with the world. Comic books aren't just superficial stories to escape the world. If Marvel comics have taught us anything, it's that comics can deal with real world issues in ways that are appealing. We don't have to think that gods from Olympus (a recent metaphor used to describe the characters in DC comics) watch down on us. They are among us. We have the ability to become heroes ourselves. The Marvel Universe, and indeed Mallory's analysis of that universe, reminds us of our own powers and our own responsibilities. Like Peter Parker's Uncle Ben once said "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility." Mallory's book shows us the degree to which Marvel comics aren't an escape from the world, but are an inspiration to act responsibly as heroes within our own world.

The author presents several options for training situations and gives information on all stages of a dogs life. Very interesting and good information on various types of training and also has data on things like aromatherapy . . . well worth reading and a great gift for any woman thinking about adding a dog to her household.

          5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2003-11-21

Finally a dog training book that explains training techniques in an easy, and creative manner. This book deals with realistic solutions to real problems. I blew a sigh of relief that finally the training methods that actually work and stand the test of time have been described in detail using actual examples of many training challenges that cannot be solved with a dog cookie. I am going to keep this book close by and use it as my bible when dog training.

          1 out of 5 stars Research based?.......2003-11-09

Given that a majority of dog trainers, and now a majority of veterinary school graduates are women, I suspect that there is no research that proves women have a harder time controlling dogs than do men.

          Woman's Best Friend
          Babette Haggerty-Brennan

Bravo! Bravo, indeed. A lovely book, well-written, easy to read and on a topic too long ignored. It is a pleasure to find not just an author, but also a first-time author who found a tasteful way of talking about a formerly taboo topic. My hat is off to her for the writing, for braving the publishing jungle and finding a publisher willing to see her work to the print and market stage.

This book is a big deal. It covers all the topics avoided by other authors on just living with a dog if you are a woman. What do you do if you are generously endowed with a large bosom and you still want to own and train a dog? What do you do with the dog when you are pregnant, nursing, or during that time of the month? These are real questions in need of real answers. Babette Haggerty-Brennan has managed to answer them all. She has covered these issues plus an entire book full of others. For any woman considering owning a dog for the first time, this book is a must. For any woman already owning a dog, this book is still a must, if for no other reason than for its ability to confirm and validate the problems you face as a woman dog owner.

I give this book 5 stars and say to Babette, "Well done, well done indeed."

          5 out of 5 stars It's About Time.......2003-09-30

I have read more dog training books then I can count. Not one has even stated corrections for offensive things dogs do to women and how to correct them. Love this book! Easy to understand, step by step info that does the job right the first time. Babette has definitely raised the bar on dog training books. A must have for any dog owner male or female!

              Book Description

Did you know that if you can't smell a strawberry, it won't have any taste? That lemon thyme is as effective a mosquito repellent as DEET? That corn with kernels in the straightest lines will taste the best? Do you know which vegetables should never go in the refrigerator? And which freeze beautifully? All of these questions-and many more-are answered in this indispensable guide to vegetables and fruits, whether you shop for them in a farmers' market, buy them in a supermarket, or grow them in your own kitchen garden.

Organized alphabetically from artichoke to zucchini, the main section of the book provides detailed information on how to grow, harvest, select, and store each type of produce, accompanied by magnificent full-page photographs made especially for this book. Also featured are sections on kitchen garden basics, hardware, and the cycle of life (which covers such topics as starting seeds, nurturing, and harvesting). A wonderful combination of beauty and practical advice, this glorious book is essential for anyone who buys produce or owns a kitchen garden. AUTHOR BIO: Mike McGrath, former editor-in-chief of Organic Gardening magazine, has his own program, "You Bet Your Garden," on National Public Radio. He lives in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Gordon Smith's photographs can be found in museums and private collections throughout the world.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite veggie picture book.......2005-08-30

There is a place in my home for a coffee table book about gardening. It's on the coffee table, where it can be admired and browsed by family and visitors, or maybe just by me when I am in the mood to look at gorgeous pictures of garden produce and dream about next year's crop.

This book is obviously geared to the rank novice gardener (And where, I ask you, does it claim otherwise?). I am unlikely to use Kitchen Garden A to Z as a reference because I am an intermediate level home gardener who has managed to grow every category of vegetable and herb mentioned in this book. If I were a beginner, however, I would find this book to be indispensable for my starting information and pure inspiration to get going. It would be easy to find whatever I was looking for with the oversized page titles laid out A to Z, on the side edge, graphic-stylish. I would also be awed at the lovely diversity of tomatoes, melons, squash, etc. which I almost never see in my grocery store. The pictures are impeccable and artistically shot, and they feature several varieties and stages of growth for each crop being examined on the spread. The information is short and useful, but doesn't go into much detail; for instance, in the Pumpkin spread under "harvest" it simply says to leave the handle on, cut when the fruit is mature and let cure in the sun for a week. Nothing about thumbnail testing the shell first or whether it should cure on the ground or somewhere else, and if it can be left on the vine for awhile or not. Oh well, most people will do okay with this so I suppose one shouldn't get too picky about short text.

I am grateful that in the first section (which takes up nearly half the book) there is more explanation about how to garden generally and an emphasis on how to do it organically. A first-timer would have been thoroughly primed on how to lay out their garden depending on available sun and how much they could realistically handle. It also shows superb examples of beautiful and clever vegetable gardens above and beyond typical row-style. Beginners will be able to start out right after reading this book and they will have every chance of productive and satisfying crops.

But I still like it mainly for the pictures:).

              5 out of 5 stars A mouth-watering sight for any Veggie.......2004-11-28

This book gets the end spot in my kitchen cookbook shelf, just to show off the great cover photograph. For a veggie like me, it's a taste of heaven. I love the photographs, not just because the vegetables are all so wonderfully ripe and luscious looking, but because Smith has shot them in such an inventive way. I wish I could visit his produce market! The text is a bit lite, but that's not what I bought the book for. This is a coffee table book that will hold its own with any collection of dazzling images.

5 out of 5 stars Kitchen Garden A to Z.......2004-11-15

As a home gardener and artist, I am delighted and inspired by Kitchen Garden A to Z, which is filled with easy to access "how-to" information and beautiful illustrations. Having heard Mike McGrath on public radio, I find his down-to-earth enthusiasm and knowledge about organic gardening as welcoming as ever. He's written a great reference book that's clear, practical and to-the-point. He doesn't read like an encyclopedia or a scientific journal, but rather, he sounds like the gardener next door who's been there, done that, and wants you to succeed. The wisdom of his experience shows. Of course, the vegetables in the beautiful photographs are a feast for the eyes - something to see now, and (hopefully) grow later.

I think there is certainly something in the book for gardeners of every age and skill level. My sister, who has a lot of vegetable-loving animals in her yard, found an answer to her prayers in the section on container gardening. The information on how to prevent "damping off" and leggy seedlings has given me the courage to start planting from seed again. And when I showed the book to my 87-year old mother, who knows her way around the kitchen, she wanted a copy of the "Storage Basics at a Glance" summery page for her very own.

The book has been wonderful gift. You may discover, as I have, that Kitchen Garden A to Z works beautifully both on the coffee table and the back porch.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe a nice photo book for a beginning gardner.......2004-11-14

An oversized volume that is well organized and has beautiful pictures; unfortunately, what it has for visual impact it sorely lacks in useful detail. The primary purpose for my purchasing the book were harvesting and storage options of vegatables. However for each plant covered, at best a sentence or two is offered. Best example of where it failed me - for carrots it offers 2 choices; refrigeration or long term storage buried in sand. No comment on canning, freezing, drying, etc -- and who in suburbia is going to have a box o' sand?

Other topics, garden design, tools, mulching are all treated on the same "high level" aspect. Its like reading a collection of highlights to chapters that somehow never made it to the printers.

While it might be useful for someone whose never worked in a garden before, or perhaps a child who is interested in learning about gardening, on the whole its little more than a well organized collection of interesting tidbits of knowledge. Its not worth the $45.00 cover charge in either case.
