A friend was looking for a great book for a young woman, to help ease her into adulthood. The usual fiction fare came to mind, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, To Kill a Mockingbird, and so on. Then I came across Game Face: What Does a Female Athlete Look Like? and immediately decided this was the perfect choice for a preteen girl. In fact, it's a great addition to your mother's coffee table, your best friend's bookshelf, and your sister's "girls rule" collection.

Created and edited by Jane Gottesman, and including a foreword from Penny Marshall, this book takes you on a romp through women in sports from the 19th to the 21st century. The pictures capture superstar athletes like Serena Williams and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, along with small-town sports victors like the determined young "tomboy on a skateboard." The photographs range from showing the agony of defeat to the gritty triumph of victory on the faces of women from all around the world. It's a truly magnificent display of woman power on the field and court, in the ring and stadium, and beyond. Definitely recommended for all the "girlz" in your life. --E. Brooke Gilbert

    Book Description

On playing fields and street corners, in backyards and gyms, the people in this arresting array of pictures are unselfconsciously exploring the physical and emotional pleasures of competition and play. Each image offers an affirming and satisfying answer to the question at the heart of Game Face: What do girls and women look like when freed from traditional feminine constraints, using their bodies in joyful and empowering ways?

To show America what women’s sports looks like, Jane Gottesman searched through the work of our country’s best photographers, from the newest photojournalists to artists such as Annie Leibovitz and Ansel Adams. The result is a unique and inspiring document of the tremendous impact that the growth of female sports at all levels is having on society—and on women themselves.

1 out of 5 stars This book fell apart!.......2007-08-25

The book may be all of the things everyone says, but my copy has completely fallen apart. We did not abuse this book in any way, pages simply started falling out of it. It was poorly made. Amazon has refused to replace it since it purchased it over 30 days ago. Apparently, they do not stand behind faulty merchandise they sell. In any case, who wants a book where 1/2 the pages are falling out? I recommend that you do not purchase this, simply because it's poorly constructed. Or, buy it from a different retailer who will replace it if your copy starts to self destruct as mine did.

5 out of 5 stars Shows the true female athlete.......2003-07-11

I saw the exhibit of the photographs in this book at the Smithsonian a year and a half ago and I was captivated. I knew immediately that I wanted this book. As an athlete myself, I know what all the stages of sports really are and I connected with the emotions expressed in the litte stories throughout the book. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially developing female athletes, because it is inspirational and exhilarating!!

5 out of 5 stars Game Face: What Does A Female Athlete Look Like?.......2002-09-07

Great book for all ages. A lot of the pictures don't need stories to accompany them, they speak for themselves. Excellent book to read and also to give as a gift to any young up and coming athlete.

5 out of 5 stars Go Girl Go.......2002-06-18

For every woman who loves sports and the women who actively persue them this is a must book! Pictures and information are outstanding, informative and thought provoking. Everything from our newest heroes to women in the past that some of us may not have even recognized. I enjoyed every page of this book and have even ordered it as gifts for friends who like me love to see females who excel in their fields.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a girl.......2002-02-06

This is a fabulous book for girls -- I have started getting it as a Bat Mitzvah present for nieces etc. who are into sports!

But it was also fascinating for myself as an adult to read through it. Their definition of "sports" is quite broad -- far beyond the usual basketball/soccer/etc. -- and the photos include women of all ages, races and body types. The essays by women athletes are also quite varied, offbeat and honest -- much more interesting than the typical magazine interview with star athletes.

For the aspiring romance writer who needs a little direction, Writing Romances: A Handbook by the Romance Writers of America is an excellent starting point. Divided into four sections, the business of romance is discussed in the first section, including thorough treatments of subjects such as agents, handling publicity, networking, and "the life and times of a manuscript." The following two sections closely examine the processes of researching and writing a novel--from writing with passion to point of view and writing with a partner--while the final section focuses on writing specific types of romances, including the regency, the short contemporary, and the historical romance. All 25 topics are handled by experts in the field: the business side of romance is presented by successful agents, publicists, and editors, while romance writing is handled by bestselling authors such as Jude Deveraux, Diana Gabaldon, and Janet Dailey.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......2002-07-17

I bought this because I want to be a romance writer, and I was looking for information that would help me in this market as well as give me writing tips. It does a good job on the first count, but it was not very useful for me, a beginner, who did not know anything about writing romances. So the title is misleading.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Enjoyable.......2001-12-31

I was honestly surprised by how much I liked this book. Of all the different "how to" books I've read about writing genre fiction, this one was the most helpful and informative on issues of marketing, publicity, and self presentation as an author.

No, this book does not take you by the hand and explain how to plot a story, how to develop a character, or how to format your manuscript. There are, however, many others that do, as a quick search for "writing reference" will show you. This book credits the reader with a certain amount of experience and know how. You do not need to be a succesful writer to enjoy this, simply an observant reader.

Not to give anyone the wrong idea, the book also contains a lovely chapter by Jude Deveraux about the common mistakes new writers make - complete with advice on how to avoid them. There are chapters that discuss the structure of a romance, what the audience expects from heroine and hero, how to do (and then incorporate) research for historical romances, writing the regency romance, long vs. short form, including the paranormal (time travel, magic, etc), and the evolution romance writing has gone through over the years.

I highly recommend this book, not only to romance writers, but to all aspiring writers. After all, many mysteries, westerns, and science fiction stories do have a touch of romance in them, and vice versa.

3 out of 5 stars More for the published author than a beginner........2000-05-13

Unfortunately, this book deals mainly with the business-end of romance writing. While that's fine, it shouldn't be marketed as a writing book. It does have some tips for a beginner, but mostly you'll find advice for marketing, promotion, and other non-writing topics.

5 out of 5 stars Wise, well written, thorough. Well worth buying!.......1999-01-22

This book is a wonderful collection of works by experts in the Romance genre. As a first-time published Romance author, I can hardly claim to be an expert in the field...I have a long way to go before I become proficient. This book is ideal for me. It provides me with support from women who have fought battles long before I dreamed of writing. I am grateful for their wisdom.

It also assumes a certain amount of writing ability and knowledge of the genre; again, ideal for me in that it is not so much a beginner's how-to as it is a forum for romance lovers to share their opinions and pointers about the wonderful genre.

It's a delight to read. A great source of encouragement!

          Book Description

In warm, conversational anecdotes taken from his own practice, Kelley - an award-winning columnist for The Thoroughbred Times as well as a practicing vet - writes about horse health care, from fertility to fractures to foot care. Appealing to the ongoing reader fascination with vets' lives and experiences, as well as to horse owners' needs for sound veterinary advice, THE HORSE DOCTOR IS IN is a medical reference without the endless pages of unreadable medical-speak. Sound, browsable, practical, and usable, this book will both be read in armchairs and used in 3 a.m. barn emergencies.

A broad range of equine health issues is covered in four major sections: Disease; Lameness; Breeding and Foaling; and Care and Management (which covers barn safety, stable vices, goats as companion animals, and more). Each chapter uses a true story to set up a health scenario, then flows into a practical discussion of problems, conditions, or diseases. There are chapters on everything from foaling through equine old age, allowing readers to enjoy the pleasure of fine narrative storytelling while learning how to better handle and understand horses. A particularly satisfying benefit of the book is becoming acquainted with a variety of interesting horses and their owners.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Mission Accomplished!.......2003-09-03

This book is exactly what Brent Kelley set out to write: an entertaining, easy to read horse vet book. Its a perfect blend of anecdotes and technical information. His stories and experiences not only make the various equine aliments easier to understand, but more memorable as well. Definitely a "must have" for any horse owners who have ever struggled through books on equine veterinary medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Mixes storytelling with technical information!.......2003-04-08

Finally, a veterinary guide that actually helps a horse owner understand the illness or disease his horse is facing. Dr. Kelley uses to his advantage many actual case stories or studies to help the reader understand technical veterinary terms/diseases. For example, he'll write about a horse he treated for canker/thrush, then he'll go into detail the clinical aspects of canker/thrush. Very interesting read!

"Bredekamp's achievement goes well beyond bringing peculiar collections of obtuse constructions and ambitious alchemy to the attention of art historians. By explaining the sources of the pictures of the baroque era, he also succeeds in making plausible a world of ideas in which the museum was not yet a locus of highbrow diversion, but a means of gaining insight into the essence of the world. A superb essay."
          -Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"Horst Bredekamp's elegant, erudite book sheds a flood of new light on the relations between art, science and scholarship in early modern Europe. Deftly using a vast array of visual and textual sources, Bredekamp establishes the forgotten connections between enthusiasm for the antique and the discovery of nature, classical erudition and technical innovation."

              Book Description

We Fly Away is the story of a widowed father, born in poverty shortly before the Great Depression and his six children, five daughters and one son. The book chronicles the family as they progressed through life in the rural south during the 1950Â's.

We Fly Away is the story of struggles, dreams, hopes and triumphs of a fatherÂ's love for God, education and the American Dream that he shared with his children. The fatherÂ's profound dedication and commitment to his children is found throughout the book. When he flew away on May 24, 1998, two of the daughters had already earned doctorate degrees. The son is a successful entrepreneur and government employee, while the older daughters have become successful in their own businesses in gardening, catering, courier services, and day care operations.

5 out of 5 stars We Fly Away: A Widowed Father's Struggle to Keep His Family.......2004-03-20

The author speaks candidly about a father's love and determination to keep his family together. Through words that evoke both laughter and sadness, the author is able to transport the reader to a time a place ethched in the minds of many who were born during the forties and fifties. Picking blueberries, strawberries, stringbeans, watermelons and "putting in tobacco" in North Carolina...those were the years and times of youth. With each family character, the author skillfully depicts what family love looks and feels like. This is a "must read" story of a father's enduring will to rear his family - against all odds.

4 out of 5 stars We Fly Away.......2004-02-12

I think this book is a good story about a father who struggles to keep his family together after his wife dies. I't is about family, love, and life. It will make you laugh and cry.

5 out of 5 stars Beating The Odds.......2004-01-26

A true depiction of how a fathers love and determination overcame the odds against both he and his family. In today's society, love, family, struggles and just plain hard work seem to be obsolete. We are a throw away society. Isn't it wonderful to see how a "real" family overcame obstacles, loss and managed to keep the love and not become a "throw-away" family. Three cheers for Dr. Alice Garrett and her siblings for continuing the traditions engrained by their father.

5 out of 5 stars A Story Every Family Should Read!.......2004-01-23

We Fly Away is a wonderful, inspirational and funny book about a family's love and determination to stay together. The widowed father is left to raise six children ranging in age 12 to 4 with the youngest being the only son. Raising five girls and a young son was no easy task for the father but one he promised his wife prior to her death. Short and creatively written, the book moves with a pace that puts one in rural Duplin County, North Carolina in the 1950's and progresses to 1998 at the time of the father's death. The father spends an inordinate amount of time weaving his family together and teaches long reaching lessons about family, faith, love, education and God. Written by one daughter, the book is based on the 90th Psalm, the father's favorite scripture which contains all the lessons he teaches his children. Following each chapter is a beautiful and thought provoking reflection. This book is a must read that will make you laugh and cry.
